Rest In Peace
“Eternal Father” (Sea Chanters Chorus, Narration by Musician 1st Class Michael Webb)
Thanks Jace and Pat
This weekend was Mr. C’s 90th birthday. Friday we had a tomato tasting (really a BLT fest) and yesterday for his birthday he helped organize a fundraiser for a friend who was hit by a drunk driver 3 years ago. She used to sing and play in his favorite band. And yesterday for the first time in three years she performed in public. It was great.
KGC… happy birthday Mr. Cracker!
I too didn’t always agree with McCain’s politics… but I always appreciated his love for this country. What he went through in Vietnam will always make him a true hero in my eyes. I voted for him in the 2000 NH primary… which makes him the last Republican I voted for (it’ll most likely remain that way). May he rest in peace and his family find some solace in thinking of his life.
I will listen to this a little later today. This morning is one made for Bach and Chopin, a little odd pairing in my world, but one that fits the morning well.
Looking at what has become of the Republican Party is very sad, sad in a way that SFB would not know or appreciate. Captain and Senator John McCain was the last of the party. I cannot come up with any single phrase to label the slimy, cowards who, at best, are Russian sympathizers, and at worst are traitors to America. The racist fools are working to destroy these United States in a way that has not been seen since the 1850’s. The big fear is they do want to destroy America. A horrible thought is they cannot see beyond their hate of anyone except rich, white males and therefore are doing their hardest to achieve the goal.
Maybe later this year, or next, a woman or man, will remember what the party used to be and lead it. Until then the greedy old perverts are run by a perverted mob boss, dictator wannabe, SFB.
“Don’t get old” is what my ninty-one year old mother tells me. This morning has been a search for a Navy flag, I thought that would be nice to put out for a couple of days. So, during the morning run for groceries I need to stop by the Naval Academy and pick up a new one. It was just announced that Captain and Senator John McCain will be buried at the Naval Academy. Goes to show grades are not all that necessary to be a top flight man.
daughter was living downtown when McCain came to a campaign event at the Citadel. I see it’s at The McCalister Field House, open to the public, and free, so I call up the little dottir and ax her she wanna go, so we went…..probably in the Time of Palin…..I went to the citadel for a year as a vet student so I knew the layout, parking and all that, and we went on in to the event. As I remember, it was short and sweet, then over and out we went. But we did get to hear Graham and Mac speak along with a few others. They didn’t change mine or dottir’s opinions about anything but it was good to see them up close. I think I wrote a comment about it back then.
Thanks again Jace. Sorry I was late posting this morning, fell asleep last night before it was there.
Happy Birthday Mr. C!
It’s so much different to see them up close than on TV etc. Can’t tell you how many musical acts I had no interest in but went to see for one reason or another and then started to think they might not be so bad after all……
Like Barry Manilow, for instance.
wouldn’t Senator McCain be pleased at this reach (carved in granite someday) across the aisle
cbsnews:
Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York, says he’ll introduce a resolution to rename the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington for Sen. John McCain, who died at the age of 81 on Saturday after his battle with brain cancer.
“As you go through life, you meet few truly great people. John McCain was one of them. His dedication to his country and the military were unsurpassed, and maybe most of all, he was a truth teller — never afraid to speak truth to power in an era where that has become all too rare. The Senate, the United States, and the world are lesser places without John McCain,” Schumer said in a statement Saturday evening amid news of McCain’s passing.
Schumer noted that while “nothing will overcome the loss of Senator McCain” he will move to introduce a resolution to rename the Senate office building “so that generations remember him.”
At a press conference in New York on Sunday, Schumer added that he “always felt that we could more appropriately name the Richard Russell Office building and John McCain was the perfect person for that.” He said that McCain was an “antidote when he saw bigotry” and “put a dagger through its heart.”
The building is currently named Sen. Richard Brevard Russell Jr., a Democrat from Georgia who served from 1933 to 1971. A statue of the senator also stands in the Russell building rotunda.
Don’t get old.
Caught up with my 8th grade math teacher much later in life, he still had a job at the school, but no longer teaching. Marine Maj. Ted Richardson, Retired. Veteran of New Guinea and other such in the South Pacific, tough old soldier. That was his advice as he looked down from standing on a stool, changing a hallway lightbulb.
Don’t get old.
i.e. Keep working, keep active, don’t get old.
Kinda nice to know that 95% of the math I use in cabinetmaking I got in the 8th grade from that guy. Maybe 96.
usa today:
Neil Simon, the legendary comedic playwright whose beloved hits include “The Odd Couple,” “Barefoot in the Park” and “Sweet Charity,” has died at 91.
The writer died early Sunday of complications from pneumonia at New York Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan, where he was surrounded by his family, said his longtime friend Bill Evans, director of media relations for the Shubert Organization.
Neil Simon’s place in the dramatic canon never rivaled that of Arthur Miller, Eugene O’Neill, Tennessee Williams or August Wilson, to name a few 20th-century icons who died before him. But Simon proved more consistently popular with mass audiences by channeling the neuroses of everyday people into one clever, accessible comedy after the next.
He was, for a long stretch, the American people’s playwright.
Simon’s Broadway productions included cherished plays such as “The Sunshine Boys” and the musicals “They’re Playing Our Song” and “Promises, Promises.”

WASHINGTON — Sen. John McCain will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol, a rare honor bestowed on only 31 people in 166 years.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced the decision of congressional leaders from both parties Sunday, calling McCain “a great American patriot, a statesman who put his country first and enriched this institution through many years of service.”
McCain died Saturday evening after a year-long battle with brain cancer. He was 81.
No dates were announced for the ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, and McConnell said details would be provided in the near future. The McCain family is planning funeral arrangements, to include a full-dress service at Washington National Cathedral and burial in the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis, Md.
The last person to lie in state at the Capitol was Sen. Daniel Inouye, president pro tem of the Senate, who died in office in December 2012. Others have included 11 U.S. presidents dating back to Abraham Lincoln; two vice presidents; six other members of Congress; three military leaders, and the unknown soldiers from World Wars I and II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
The Rev. Billy Graham earlier this year became one of four people who have lain in honor at the Capitol, which is different from lying in state. Also included in that list were civil rights leader Rosa Parks and two Capitol police officers killed on duty.
It’s about to rain in old Caroline…..good day for it, too.
Forgot to write “buy Navy flag” on the yellow stickies used to supplement the parts that are no longer functioning. The POW/MIA flag is as good, or even better.

It’s been over a hundred years since women across the United States successfully lobbied for the right to vote, giving way to the Nineteenth Amendment and the declaration of Women’s Equality Day, to be celebrated annually on August 26.

abc news: John McCain’s death means potential legal battle to fill his Senate seat
[…]
According to Arizona state law, the governor appoints a replacement for any vacancy in a U.S. Senate seat who will hold it until the “next eligible general election.”
That person must belong to the same political party of the person who held the seat.
That means Doug Ducey, Arizona’s Republican governor, would appoint a Republican to fill McCain’s seat until the next general election or until the governor decided to call a special election.
[…election details…]
Matt Roberts, the communications director for the Arizona Secretary of State, confirmed to ABC News that under state law, Ducey can appoint a replacement that will serve in McCain’s seat until 2020.
Democrats could challenge that relevant portion of state law to try and force a special election in 2018, which would put both of the state’s Senate seats up this cycle since retiring Sen. Jeff Flake’s seat is also up.
When asked about potential plans to pursue legal action to force a special election in 2018, a spokesperson for the Arizona Democratic Party declined to comment on the subject, instead telling ABC News, “John McCain is an American hero and our thoughts are with him and his family at this difficult time.”
A special election this year would force Republicans to defend two Senate seats this cycle in a state Donald Trump won by just four percentage points in the 2016 presidential election.
I have Old Glory at half-staff until after the funeral.
Good day for that as well……
Flatus – it is correct for civilians to follow the federal, state and local declarations about flags. We, veterans, also have extra things we can do, such as salute the flag on certain events.
For Captain and Senator McCain I would like to have a flag pole so I could lower the Colors for him.
McCain wanted W & Obama to speak at his funeral.
Sadly, Mike & Mommy Pence will attend as a reminder of what sits in the OO.
Resolved: That the schmuck is having the most miserable day of his miserable life.
I heard Rob Bartlett’s Radio Show last night on WABC, AM 770.
it was entertaining, kind of like I remember old time radio was…..(I caught the tail-end of old time radio)……anyway it’s a good show at 10 pm Saturday nights. Glad to see El Robio still working…..

we allowed a few younger people in.. all the birthday people got their own special cake — Mr C had peach upside down cake and our niece in law had chocolate stout cake (as in the beer)
Happy B’day to the crackers! (The cakes look pretty amazing, too.)
McCain’s tributes aim veiled shots at Trump https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/26/opinions/mccain-death-robertson-opinion/index.html
The cakes were wonderful besides the two above -3 different carrot cakes, a chocolate fudge cake and two lemon meringue pies
I had a few things to listen to this morning. Yoyo Ma playing Bach is what I woke to. Somehow it seemed fitting. I’ve spent many moments today considering my disagreements with and respect for Senator McCain. I tried to reconcile the two then realized there was no need. I guess that kind of underscores the decency of Captain McCain.
All hail Mr Cracker
90 down and still no slacker
Hail, hail, the gang’s all…waiting for the Crackers to share that cake. Happy Nine Zero!
I hope they never even begin considering making room for SFB at Arlington
KC 90 is a great milestone. My best to you and Mr. C. Only 2 (of 12) of my parents/grandparents/uncles/aunts, (specifically my mom’s mom and brother) lived beyond their 80s. My grandm lived to 93. My uncle is 90 this year, pushing to live as long as my grandmother. Worn out knees aside he’s in good health. No sign of dementia other than being an IMPOTUS supporter. I’m betting he makes it. I’m hoping he makes it.
Happy Birthday to you, Mr Cracker !
Only well-beloved guys can attract such a wealth of sweets, cakes and sweets. I hope you have the best year yet.
Manly midwestern bear hugs,

I dunno. If I went own in a plane crash ( & survived ! ) and were suddenly surrounded by angry guys with AK-47s, I know I’d take the coffee – I’d prolly need the liquid after peeing in my flight boots. Seeing as how I was a major cigarette/tobacco addict in those days, and as I’d prolly still loopy after the crash, I bet I’d have taken the commie cigarette. Therefore, I’m in no position to judge Cap’n McCain, and the grudge I’ve held against McCain for 45 years was unfair and unworthy. It saddens me that he died only day after I changed my mind. I’d have liked to like him a lot longer.
sigh
In the olden days, the slobs with the stretchers had big red crosses on their helmets. The story was that the viet cong like to take potshots at those nice, highly visible, red crosses. The story continued that the brass took notice of the high %age of shot up medics & such, and changed the color of the crosses, so only our guys knew we were unarmed.
I think the real story is that we were frequently the first guys off coming the ‘copters, and so we were still getting plugged pretty regularly. ‘Cept me.
