Perhaps he realizes now that he has to do more than sit by impassively passing judgment, however. Perhaps he is starting to understand that without a sustained, vocal and affirmative defense of the judiciary, he might find that there might be little left to adjudicate in the event the branch whose job it is to “say what the law is,” as former Chief Justice John Marshall once said, finds itself hobbled and silenced by such overt threats to the rule of law.

Roberts admittedly has no good options. Perhaps he doesn’t want to weigh in on Trump’s apparent willingness to defy courts because he expects these matters to reach the Supreme Court and doesn’t want to appear to be an interested party. Or perhaps Roberts is less bothered because he believes that the president will prevail on these matters at the Supreme Court. Trump is effective at destroying norms because he forces institutions and individuals to either succumb to his partisan logic or else avoid the fight and thus cede the debate to him.

During his confirmation hearings to be chief justice, Roberts famously likened judges to umpires, calling balls and strikes. But his statement today is akin to responding to the Black Sox scandal by defending the officiating. The players here aren’t arguing about the strike zone; they’re trying to rig the game.

The West Virginia Mountaineers are furious with the NCAA for snubbing the men’s basketball team from the NCAA Tournament, just like Florida State did after they were snubbed from the College Football Playoff. West Virginia leaders, both with the university and with the state, are taking legal action against the NCAA.

The higher-ups at West Virginia are not having it and are planning to take legal action against the NCAA. IT didn’t take long for West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey to release a statement talking about the legal action the state would take against the NCAA, simply the morning after the bracket was revealed.

Morrisey held a press conference held at 1:00 p.m. EST time to discuss a potential investigation and other legal action. Morrisey even came up with a clever new name for the NCAA, the “National Corrupt Athletic Association.”

Even Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark chimed in on the snub of West Virginia. The Big 12 Commissioner wondered how the Mountaineers could be left out of the tournament with the resume they compiled throughout the season.

Idiots. FL State sued the ACC over its exit and entrance fees after it was passed over for the 2023 football playoffs.

BTW, UNC beat SD State by 27 points in the first 4 round last night. (And trust me on this – I am not a UNC fan, but I know stupidity when I see it.)

pat, great minds. Well, I’m lazy. I haven’t used Krusteaz cornbread mix since last week. My go-to used to be Zatarain’s jalapeno cornbread mix, but I can’t find it locally anymore, so Krusteaz Honey Cornbread mix has become part of the larder. Walmart carries Famous Dave’s but the 1st ingredient is sugar, and as a southern boy I can’t wrap my mind around that.

How will Trump’s madness be contained? Three sources of pushback are traditional conservatives, courts, and Republicans in Congress. So far, none are all that reassuring.

The Wall Street Journal editorial page, home of fact-bending and scorn directed at liberals, has been doing some soul-searching lately. The Tuesday page had four pieces that could have run in the Prospect. The lead editorial, titled “Trump, Deportations and the Law,” criticized Trump officials who “disdain the law in the name of upholding it.”

The op-ed page had four pieces. One, co-authored by Al Gore, no less, was titled “The Business Case for Green Energy.” A second scolded Trump for usurping Congress’s authority on tariffs. A third pointed to the prevailing hypocrisy on antisemitism, where the right, not the left, is the main threat. And the fourth was called “My Brother’s Hero and a Stranger’s Kindness.” It invoked Willie Mays. Shades of DEI.

Last week, Journal columnist Peggy Noonan celebrated the socialist muckraker Upton Sinclair, of all people, to make the point that “journalism can work as a public benefit, and government make things better.” Who knew?

Has it belatedly occurred to the Journal that maybe not all is well with its usual far-right allies? But does anyone in Trumpworld really care what traditional conservatives think? The Journal editorial page snidely helped dispatch Biden and Harris. Now, Trump doesn’t really need their love.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has brushed aside accusations that his police forces used a military-grade LRAD (Long Range Acoustic Devices) cannon against a crowd of hundreds of thousands of anti-government protesters in the capital on Saturday.

Rally-goers were seen in footage on social media dispersing frantically during a 15-minute silence that was being observed during the protest.

One protester, Marija Simin, told the Balkan Insight that she recalled hearing a strange, “unnatural” noise resembling a jet engine, followed by a powerful rush of wind.

Another protester who asked to be identified only as U.M also described hearing “some kind of low howling sound” which lasted about 10 to 15 seconds “during which you didn’t know what was happening at all—whether someone was coming, whether they were running away, or whether someone was attacking.”

According to the U.S.-based nonprofit Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), acoustic weapons are used “for crowd-control purposes by emitting loud and painful levels of noise that may lead to significant harms to the ears, potentially causing hearing loss.”

It notes that the LRAD “can cause pain at 20 meters and permanent hearing loss at close range (5 meters or less).”

Rights groups in Serbia have raised concerns that the acoustic weapon, which is banned, was used over the weekend.

In an address to the nation, Vučić said “it is a vile lie” that a LRAD—commonly known as a sonic weapon—was used, at the mass rally in Belgrade on Saturday.

Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators rallied against Vučić and his administration, as part of a broader national movement protesting corruption.

Russia is Serbia’s key ally in blocking international recognition of its former province of Kosovo, and Vučić has insisted that he would not take sides in the Russia-Ukraine war. He refused to join Western sanctions against Moscow following Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The Belgrade Centre for Security Policy strongly condemns the unlawful and inhumane deployment of prohibited weapons, such as acoustic devices, against peaceful protesters during a public gathering of hundreds of thousands of citizens paying tribute to victims of the collapsed roof in Novi Sad.”

It added: “This act represents a blatant display of force and an attempt to incite chaos, aiming to delegitimise protests and criminalise peaceful citizens.”

Decision to axe advisory groups could spell trouble for US food safety

The USDA announced March 6 that it was terminating NACMCF, which provided scientific advice and recommendations to the USDA, the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on a broad range of issues related to pathogens and public health. The USDA said all work should stop immediately, citing President Donald Trump’s Feb. 19 executive order to pare down the federal bureaucracy.

The agency also terminated the National Advisory Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspection (NACMPI), which advised the USDA on the safety of meat and poultry inspection programs.

*The agency didn’t do it. It was tRUMP who wants contaminated baby formula and toxic Easter ham for the carnivores.

A database obtained by CNN shows that more than 24,000 articles could be purged, with many gone already. The scrub goes well beyond just the removal of images from the Pentagon’s visual database, known as DVIDS, and includes articles from across more than 1,000 websites hosted by the department.

But dozens of the articles either flagged for removal or removed already — but still accessible via the Internet Archive’s Wayback machine — and reviewed by CNN have no ostensible connection to DEI programs; race theory; gender ideology or identity-based programs.

Articles related to September 11 remembrance, including service members reflecting on their service and where they were that day, have also been removed. So have articles about cancer awareness, including those related to Breast Cancer Awareness month and colon cancer awareness.
One such article authored by an Air Force Surgeon General titled, “A healthy lifestyle lowers your risk of getting breast cancer,” was removed and now has “DEI” in its URL.
Several articles about sexual assault have also been removed and now have “DEI” in their URL, including“April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month” and “A call to action – Three ways to combat sexual assault.”

Articles about suicide prevention have been purged, too, including ones titled: “VA releases veteran suicide statistics by state”; “Suicide prevention alliance focuses on troops, veterans”; and “Suicide Prevention Resources That Can Help.” The latter two articles now feature “DEI” in their URLs.

Book Club Suggestion:

Thomas Buergenthal, now a Judge in the International Court of Justice in The Hague, tells his astonishing experiences as a young boy in his memoir A Lucky Child. He arrived at Auschwitz at age 10 after surviving two ghettos and a labor camp. Separated first from his mother and then his father, Buergenthal managed by his wits and some remarkable strokes of luck to survive on his own. Almost two years after his liberation, Buergenthal was miraculously reunited with his mother and in 1951 arrived in the U.S. to start a new life. 

Now dedicated to helping those subjected to tyranny throughout the world, Buergenthal writes his story with a simple clarity that highlights the stark details of unimaginable hardship. 

He passed May 29, 2023 age 89.

Well, it’s official. East Bumfuck had a new high temp for March 19 of 81 F, 2 degrees above the prior record of 79. Illinois note that at 5:00 the temp on art. 50 and I-79 was 86 F. March 19, 2025, a day that will live in ignity.
