  1. more on moon info

Tonight’s ‘Sturgeon Moon’ will be the 1st ‘blue supermoon’ of 2024: Here’s how to see it at its biggest and best | Live Science

The year’s first supermoon is also the third full moon in a summer that includes four, making it a ‘blue supermoon’. Here’s how to see August’s full Sturgeon Moon rise.
The biggest and brightest full moon of 2024 so far will rise today (Aug. 19), but its unusual name needs explaining. Although August’s full moon is typically called the “Sturgeon Moon,” this month, it’s also a “blue supermoon.”
The Sturgeon Moon, at its fullest on Aug. 19 at 2:25 p.m. EDT, is called a blue moon because of an astronomical quirk. There are two types of blue moons: a monthly blue moon (the second full moon in a month) and a seasonal blue moon (the third of four full moons in the same astronomical season). Since the summer solstice on June 20, there have been full moons on June 22 and July 21. The Sturgeon Moon on Aug. 19 and the following full moon, the Harvest Moon, on Sept. 18 will occur before the equinox on Sept. 22.
Blue moons of either type occur once every two to three years, according to NASA. The last seasonal blue moons were in October 2020 and August 2021, and the next seasonal blue moon will occur in May 2027, according to timeanddate.com
Best seen rising above the eastern horizon at moonrise on Monday, the Sturgeon Moon will also appear bright on Tuesday. Stargazing binoculars and backyard telescopes aren’t necessary to enjoy the full moon, but may help reveal details on the lunar surface not visible to the naked eye.
August’s full moon is named for sturgeon fish that are found in the Great Lakes at this time of year, according to timeanddate.com. The Anishinaabeg people call the August moon Minoomini Giizis, which means “the Grain (Wild Rice) Moon,” according to the Center for Native American Studies.
This month’s full moon is also a supermoon — a consequence of the moon’s monthly orbit around Earth not being a perfect circle. Each month, the moon reaches its closest point to Earth, known as perigee. When perigee coincides with a full moon, it’s a supermoon.
There will be four supermoons in 2024, beginning with the Sturgeon Moon. The closest full moon of the year will be the Hunter’s Moon on Oct. 17. The next full moon will be the Harvest Moon on Sept. 17. In addition to being one of the best-known full moons of the year, part of the 2024 Harvest Moon will pass through Earth’s shadow during the night, causing it to become partially eclipsed by Earth.

  2. Harris Popularity Up 11 Points
Voters with favorable opinions of Harris has risen to 48% from 39%. The share saying they don’t know enough about her is down to 6%. — AP poll

Harris clearly won the battle for first impressions.

  3. craig, I hadn’t either until I stumbled across this rendition which is even (dare I say) sensual and more moving than the piano versions.

Clair de lune de Claude Debussy, arrangement pour la guitare de James Bishop-Edwards Interprété par Roxane, Paris 2016.

  4. more on those dem projections in chi-town

Images projected on Trump Tower in Chicago ahead of DNC – NBC Chicago

Various images targeting Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Senator JD Vance, the party’s vice presidential nominee, were projected onto Trump Tower late Sunday night ahead of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
As Democrats descended on the city for the four-day convention, various taunts were visible on the side of the building, such as “Project 2025 HQ,” which referred to a conservative blueprint for the next Republican president – one that Trump has repeatedly distanced himself from.
Along with accompanying messages in Spanish, one taunt read, “Trump-Vance Weird as Hell.'” Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who Vice President Kamala Harris’ chose as her running mate earlier this month, referred to Trump and Vance as “creepy” and “weird as hell” during a rally.
Other messages expressed support for the Democratic ticket, such as, “Harris, Walz, joy and hope.”
In a statement regarding the projections, the DNC said, in part, “..All eyes are on Chicago, and tonight, everyone is seeing a preview of the contrast that will take center stage this week throughout the Democratic National Convention.”
Monday marks the beginning of the convention, where Harris will accept the party’s presidential nomination on Thursday night.

someone on the team has a wicked sense of humor to come up with the spanish taunt to say nothing of upstaging who lil lindsey calls “the provocateur” at his own game.

  5. The old guy with the loose rocks filling the cranium may have stepped over a line.  He put out a post with Taylor Swift on it, the message is Taylor Swift wants you to vote for sfb.   Whether he believes that or not does not matter, it should have some immediate reactions.  sorry no screen shot yet.

  6. Gimpy’s on his last leg. His ratings are going down. The Apprentice is so cancelled.

  7. Hope your prediction map is right on.  I’m a little skeptical of AZ, GA and NC, with some concern about MI.  If my math is right (done in my head, so watch out) that would be a 1 point loss to SFB. FWIW, according to Newsweek, Nate Silver has Harris ahead in 5 of 7 swing states.

  8. BREAKING: Television icon Phil Donahue dies at 88.

He had a much forgotten show weekends on MSNBC that I did a few times, was a lot of fun to talk to on air.

  9. Pogo, recent developments adding to other factors that put me over the top on those:

AZ: abortion rights amendment now on the ballot

GA: Trump keeps fueling his civil war against Gov. Kemp

NC: Republicans nominated a real nut job for governor who is 10 points behind

  10. Adolf really stepped in it this time.   His base is not filled to the brim with Swifties.
Swifties would know he’s lying, if they ever even see Adolf’s lies and nonsense…so that’s not why he posted. MSM, keep on task. We now return to regular programming: PROJECT 2025!

ps – I’d love it if she wore blue outfits the entire night of her  London show tonight.
There will be more shows, too. She has more people power and actual money than Adolf. Her revenge will be sweet. “Oh, look what you made me do.”

  11. I went to a Donahue show once when they did one in Charleston.  Can’t remember the guest, but enjoyed seeing the show and Phil was good host.  I’d been watching the show since it came on locally. Liked that his theme music was just a drummer. lol

  12. No one but no one’s going to believe Taylor Swift is endorsing him. But her reaction to it will get more attention than he deserves. That’s why he timed it, to deflect from the convention opening.

  13. Poobah, I was born a skeptic and 72 years of living in this country and 32 years practicing law haven’t turned me into a bright-eyed optimist. That said, I have to admit that I’m just shooting from the hip and that you and Nate Silver probably have a great deal more insight into factors that could turn an election than do I.

  14. Sad to hear about Phil. I had just been thinking about his show, how groundbreaking it was. I almost posted about him on Saturday to my niece but I figured she wouldn’t know who I was talking about. I remembered when he demonstrated the totally self-cleaning house (still waiting for that high-tech dream.) And there was the time he had the American Nazis on, chillingly prescient. Phil’s show was the first time I ever heard about the AIDS epidemic.
    RIP, Phil.

  15. Ivy – Exactly.   Lies and nonsense are distractions from his horrible time in office, his lifelong character flaws, his ties to foreign states, and PROJECT 2025.   Pay attention to what matters, media.   Please!

    ps – Happy DNC, y’all!

pps – Gwen Walz is fantastic, too!

  16. I would really love to hear his answer if asked to define communism.

    Donald J. Trump

    @realDonaldTrump

The Radical Left protesters in Chicago are going after the Democrat Party because the know they are weak and ready to break into a full blown party of Socialism or, if they really do their job, and with a little bit of luck, the Communist Party of the United States of America. They are already very close and, having a Marxist trained and believing President whose father is a Marxist professor, Comrade Kamala Harris, stranger things have happened! November 5th, 2024, will be the most important day in the history of our Country. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

  17. https://www.cnn.com/2024/08/19/politics/democrats-highlight-threat-democracy-dnc/index.html

“…among those speakers are Reps. Jamie Raskin of Maryland and Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, who both served on the House select committee to investigate the January 6 insurrection. That committee ultimately recommended in its 2022 report that Trump be barred from holding office again.”

“Retired St. Aquilino Gonell, one of the Capitol Police officers injured during the January 6 attack, will also address the convention.”

  18. Craig – I’d also love to hear the definition from whomever wrote that post.   Too many well-placed commas, ya know.

  19. Communism vs. Naziism, we’re back to that again. History repeats even when we do remember.

  20. Back when Biden was the nominee… I didn’t want to watch the Democratic Convention.  Now I’m eager to watch all 4 nights.

I loved Phil Donahue’s show.  I remember how fervently he wanted us and Russia to be friendly towards one another.  At the time, it seemed like the smart thing.  Now it’s just sad to see Russia once again doing a Cold War.

  21. Ha! Swifties are all over it, BB.
Looks like he also use an AI-generated picture of her.  I smell a lawsuit, at the very least.
Hmmm, maybe an endorsement of Harris during the DNC just to kick his shriveled nuts.

  22. Sturg – Yes, and they both have a wide, age-range of fans.  It’s not about doing as anyone says, of course, but fans align with who they are themselves.    All Taylor would have to do is put on a T-shirt for “22” that reads, “I am not AI generated” or “Orange isn’t my color,” to let everyone in Taylor Nation know what she thinks about Adolf.   And the thing is, it now spills over into Chiefs Kingdom.   Could she flip KS and MO? Ha!

  23. DNC speakers tonight

    -Hillary Rodham Clinton

    -Rep. Jamie Raskin

    -Rep. Jasmine Crockett

    -Rep. Grace Meng

    -Gov. Andy Beshear

    -Sen. Chris Coons

    -President Joe Biden

Starts 6:30p on cable and CSPAN. Big three networks 10pm

  24. I think my favorite Phil Donohue show was when he had Mohammed Ali on promoting one of his last fights. Phil was still in Chicago and his audience was mostly blue haired old ladies. Ali came out told the old ladies that the only reason he was there was to get them so mad they would pay good money to see this N***a get his ass kicked. By the time the show was over every member of the audience was ready to lay down the money. That was when I realized what a genius Ali was. Donohue was good at that, bringing out the best in his guest, while entertaining his audience.
At the time my mother was taking care of my grandmother and I found an excuse to stop by and watch his show with them.
    Jack

  25. Craig
All this communist talk only plays well in one place, your old home state of Florida. Is Florida up for grabs? If so you had better revise your map, if they are worried about Florida then there are a lot of other places in play.
    Jack

  26. Olberman said back a ways that they fired Donahue because his show cost too much with the live audience and such, and there was also the war thing.

  27. I’ve got my Joe flag flying from my flag pole. I fly the American flag on top and put topical flags below it. I have had one conversation so far, with a neighbor about it.
I will probably take it down tomorrow, take a political break and celebrate the end of summer with my sunflower flag.
    Jack

  28. I am very confident that North Carolina is good but by now we should be seeing signs that Pennsylvania should be closing upward, and it is not. Trump maintains a lead still.  I believe Harris must win PA and I wish I could quit whining about how Harris may have blown the election by picking Walz over Shapiro.

  29. Loved Phil Donohue.  It was a bit of a start that he and Marlo have been married for 44 years.  I do remember That Girl and when they got engaged after meeting on his show.

  30. A small sample of Swifty reactions to Trump AI stupidity

genuinely think Donald Trump using an AI generated image of Taylor Swift is one of the dumbest things he could’ve done, because now the Swifties are going to en masse turn on him for doing something without her consent and she didn’t even have to say anything 💀.

  31. Trying to watch Fox without cringing too often.  Someone needs to tell them that when it comes to foreign policy, there is only one President at a time.  They are all hot and heavy for Harris to say how she will handle the Middle East and response to Blinkin’s current visit with Netanyahu.

  32. My heart soars like an eagle. The Times reporting Harris now leads in Pennsylvania
that state was decided by a half percentage point and a percentage point in 2016 and 2024. good news is always welcome.

  33. He’s about a year late on the supply chain crisis talk. Buttigieg fixed that months ago. Just claimed, “It takes six months for anyone to get a package”

  34. Bibi just figured out Trump is losing… US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says Netanyahu has just accepted the latest U.S. proposal on a Gaza ceasefire deal.

  35. What kind of stupid makes him think a fake AI
endorsement by Tailor Swift would do anything but get him in trouble
And being sued for using music without permission.  Not the first time
    He is a total sleaze.
I hope Trump’s dwindling everything helps out Sherrod Brown.

  36. Buttigieg will speak Wednesday night.  Looking forward to whether this will set him up for a Presidential run in eight years.  He would make a great Secretary of State in the meantime.

  37. Early in Phil Donahue’s career he was the program director for WABJ, a radio station in my hometown of Adrian, MI. So, he’s always been a favorite of the people there.

  38. For streaming, Amazon is carrying it too, And yes, I don’t need some group of talking heads interrupting the program,  to explain what is happening.
    Jack

  40. Too bad most won’t see those tRUMPsky videos since the MSM isn’t airing the convention until 9pm, central.  Well, I suppose they’ll show up on social media, but will it reach Indies?

  41. I think this is the first misstep of an otherwise well produced show— Hillary’s speech was the perfect set up for Biden. These other speakers are pushing Biden’s speech out of prime time.

  42. Hard to say. I’m liking it but I’m pretty tolerant of late night speeches. Give me a glass of wine and I’ll listen until it’s done.

I wonder where George Santos is watching this…

  43. And he’s doing a great job for a guy up late and past his bedtime. Just waiting for the handoff.

  44. We saved Democracy in 2020 and we must save Democracy again in 2024.

    T-shirts, yard signs, caps.

And to top it, “America, I gave my best to you.”

Not a bad 1st night for me DNC.

  45. Thank goodness for the C-SPAN app!   The talking heads on the networks rolled right over the first speakers talking about abortion.
Colbert is live from Chicago, after your local news.

  46. SOTU Joe showed up; strong voice.

So sweet seeing POTUS Joe with his (great?) grandchild.

  47. blue, the little boy is Hunter’s son. I hope after the election Joe pardons Hunter, hell with what any critics have to say. He shouldn’t leave the task to Kamala, Joe should do it himself.
