  1. Early divisions signal bitter internal conflicts as Supreme Court turns toward final decisions | CNN Politics

From a blockbuster Second Amendment decision to a more technical case about retaliatory arrests, sharp disagreements have emerged on the Supreme Court over the reasoning of recent rulings – divisions that could signal an especially fiery end to the current term.
Even as the court is sometimes finding wider-than-expected majorities for relatively limited outcomes, the nine justices are regularly in conflict over the meaning of decisions. The quarreling over doctrine and rationale may partly explain why so many major cases remain before the court’s term is expected to end as soon as Friday.
    […]
“It does seem, at least anecdotally, unusual to have this many separate opinions in cases with relatively lower stakes,” said Steve Vladeck, CNN Supreme Court analyst and professor at the University of Texas School of Law. “Only the justices know why, but it certainly at least suggests that the court is having trouble reaching consensus, even in contexts in which historically it was better able to do so.”
In an important ruling last week dealing with a Trump-era repatriation tax, several justices dinged the majority for not answering the question the court initially agreed to resolve. Meanwhile, in a decision about a former city councilwoman who claimed she was wrongly arrested, Justice Brett Kavanaugh appeared to be so exasperated that he wrote the judicial equivalent of a shrug emoji into a concurrence.
“We are where we are,” Kavanaugh wrote, adding that the court’s decision to grant the case seemed, in retrospect, “ill-advised.”

  2. Supreme Court dropping decisions on abortion, Trump immunity and more in coming days (msn.com)

    WASHINGTON − Buckle up.
The Supreme Court in the coming days will issue a flurry of potentially blockbuster decisions on gun rightsabortion access, social media content, homelessness, federal regulatory authority, the opioid crisis and whether former President Donald Trump – and others – can be prosecuted for trying to overturn the 2020 election.
The high court, which tries to dispense of pending cases by the end of June, has an unusually large number of decisions pending, particularly on hot button issues. Given the current pace of opinions, the term could likely slip into early July, something that has not happened since the height of the pandemic.
And the opinions will be dropping in the lead up to the first presidential debate, on June 27, between Trump and President Joe Biden.
Biden has already tried to make the Supreme Court a major issue in the campaign.
“The Supreme Court has never been as out of kilter as it is today,” Biden said during a recent star-studded Hollywood fundraiser. “I mean never.”

  3. Right-wing NewsMax posts disclaimer at bottom of screen as Trump lies in live phone interview about winning in 2020. Dominion lawsuit against them must not be going well. Maybe that’s what CNN should do during the debate.

  4. One hour to go.

Court added tomorrow and Friday to today for 10am announcements.

Seems like they’d wait until after the debate tomorrow for immunity ruling. Could even extend announcements to Monday or beyond.

Most reliable rule about the Supreme Court: They can do whatever they want.

  5. Former Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger just endorsed President Biden’s re-election bid.

“It’s because of my unwavering support for democracy, that today, as a proud conservative, I am endorsing Joe Biden for reelection.”

  6. Not much of a day at SCOTUS – 2 decisions, one a win for the WH in its efforts to get social media platforms to combat disinformation and one a relatively insignificant one (IMHO) that narrows the reach of fed gov’t. in  state and local official bribery cases. Tomorrow and Friday should be of more import.

  7. On Real Time with Bill Maher this past Friday, Adam Kinzinger came right out and said Donald Trump is a psycho. Calling it like it is.

  8. I think the only question about the debates is the “How”   Which how does stump use to chicken out.

  9. Mountain Brook made the pizza list. It’s a foodie town, I tell ‘ya.

Post Office Pies came to greater Birmingham when John Hall determined that his best path out of Manhattan’s rat race, where he worked in some of the city’s most prestigious restaurants, was to bring craft pizza to his hometown. The Neapolitan pies are expertly made, often highlighting local produce; one draws on the partner Brandon Cain’s experience with Southern barbecue. Mr. Hall spends less time in Alabama since opening Restaurant Lola in Bremerton, Wash., an opportunity, he said, that would not have been possible had he not first gone into business for himself. “If we had investors, they never would have let me leave,” he said. “But we didn’t need help to make great pizza.” BRETT ANDERSON

  10. Jimmy Kimmel says”just because you think Alfred is too old to take care of the batcave, you don’t replace him with the Joker” Jimmy Kimmel is a wise man.

  11. Lock him up today.

House Republicans are doing their darndest to keep STEVE BANNON out of prison: As the former Trump strategist and current MAGA chieftain petitions the Supreme Court to intervene against his imminent incarceration, a panel of top House leaders convened yesterday as the Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group and voted along party lines to have the chamber officially repudiate the Jan. 6 select committee’s subpoena of Bannon, our POLITICO colleagues report. It’s unclear what effect, if any, the vote will have on the Supreme Court’s handling of the case; Bannon tells Time magazine he’s ready to start his four-month sentence on July 1.

  12. Wow, just checking tomorrow’s TV schedule and didn’t realize debate is on EVERYWHERE, live at 9pm on all news channels — network and cable, many internet sites that don’t traditionally air debates. This could be the most significant debate since 1960.

  13. I need a search party…no, my dog is safe…it’s the top of my head as it blew sky-high listening to this horrible mess in Idaho over women’s health care accessibility. Supreme Court, motions, lawyers screaming, and worst, women dying because they were turned away from doctors’ care.
Do you know who authored this national catastrophe (no, not just in Idaho)? It was the monster called Donald Trump, who BRAGS about appointing extremist Justices to SCOTUS and so, eliminating Roe v. Wade.
We, yes WE, can fix all this soon, by voting in Joe Biden for a second term. Joe will restore Roe v. Wade. We just must do this.

  14. The court formerly known as supreme seems to have a problem organizing releases of whatevers.  Doubt it is malicious intent, just plain messed up office.  I think adding at least four more justices would improve the situation.

  15. https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/26/americas/bolivia-coup-attempt-claims-intl-latam/index.html

“Bolivia’s President Luis Arce called on the country to “organize and mobilize against the coup d’état, in favor of democracy” as soldiers and armored military vehicles positioned themselves around governmental buildings in La Paz on Wednesday.”

“Armored vehicles were seen ramming into the doors of Bolivia’s government palace, according to Associated Press, as the country’s former President Evo Morales, who, like the incumbent, is in Bolivia’s Movement to Socialism (MAS) party, said on X that a “coup d’état is brewing.”

“Morales also called on “the social movements of the countryside and the city to defend democracy.”

“Bolivia’s Vice President David Choquehuanca denounced the “coup d’état in Bolivia” against the country’s democratically elected government on Wednesday.”

    https://www.newsweek.com/military-coup-underway-bolivia-tanks-storm-presidential-palace-1917940

“One tank tried to break down a metal door of the presidential palace, which was later entered by General Juan José Zúñiga— the head of the Army until his dismissal on Tuesday.”

“Zúñiga told the press that there is a “mobilization of all military units” due to “the situation in the country.”

“Former President Evo Morales, himself overthrown by the country’s military in 2019, warned that “a coup d’état is brewing.”

*What Stephen King said – tRUMP is going to lose. Prepare for it.

  16. Anyone else have a broken a/c?  The upstairs one at the office (where my office is) decided today to go on vacation and the company that can repair it can’t make an appearance until Monday. Luckily it will only be 83 tomorrow and and 88 Friday. If I make it to 2:00 Friday before saying “fuck this” and heading home it will be a minor miracle.

  17. The debate performances will give folks something to chew on next week during the family 4th BBQs, any that are brave enough or foolish enough to allow these discussions. After that, we can enjoy some summer. I doubt I’ll bother with the conventions, especially the republican one which has been unwatchable for more than a decade.

  18. ok this is where i would post “karn evil #9” by emerson lake and palmer re: the debate
