  1. Comedian and host Nikki Glaser tells Bill Maher why she no longer fears being cancelled – and why she doesn’t mind apologizing for a joke.

  2. elliott epstein, trial lawyer and author,  wrote recently on the subject:

Republicans refuse to cancel their hypocrisy culture | Lewiston Sun Journal

Cancel culture has become one of the most shopworn epithets in the GOP vocabulary and also one of the most hypocritical.
The only cancellation of free expression to which most Republican politicians object are Republican talking points,…
    […]
The events of the past four years — in which massive disinformation campaigns, QAnon conspiracy theories, and Donald Trump’s “big lie” seemed to turn many otherwise rational, respectable Americans, including those storming the Capitol on Jan. 6, into drooling, menacing zombies — have caused me to question my own views as to the inviolability of free speech.
Perhaps the government does need to give a more expansive definition to incitement to violence and insurrection, speech which is not protected by the First Amendment.
Short of that, however, I still believe that giving full rein to free speech is healthier for a democratic society than cancellation.

  3. from NYT in 2019

The internet didn’t invent the angry mob. In the satirical Video Op-Ed above, cancel culture is reimagined with the help of a medieval mob. Pray thee, the video begs, is there any room left for transgression?

  4. “cancel culture” is the 2 syllable 2 word substitute in GOPer-ese for the 4 + 3 syllable 2 word
“political correctness”  — they’ll no doubt come up with a simpler knuckle-dragger grunt next.

[I personally favor the venerable eyeroll as an eco-friendly alternative: energy saving, cleaner air & germ free]

  5. Republicans always whine about ‘cancel culture,’ but they also love to ‘cancel’ things that are actually important to our democracy (yahoo.com)

    […]
Supposed “cancel culture” is a vague term deployed by conservatives when someone faces consequences for an offensive action – it’s about things like Dr. Seuss and Space Jam. But the GOP is actually making a new art of canceling their own – and anyone else who stands in their way.
The GOP cries “cancel culture” at every opportunity. But the “cancel culture” they’re referring to is calling out entertainers, corporate leaders, or companies that step in it. According to Republicans, cancel culture is when retailers stop selling MyPillow because the CEO is a conspiracy theorist, or when your horse is disqualified from the Kentucky Derby because you gave it performance-enhancing drugs.
But none of this has anything to do with our democracy, our fundamental system of governance.
Indeed, the GOP loves to whine about cancel culture – but many in the party are more than willing to engage in their own version of cancelling. And in contrast to letting a few old, low-selling books go out of print, Republicans’ version of cancellation is actually harming the country.
    […]
In fact, the entire point of the January 6 coup attempt was to cancel the legally-cast votes for Biden. It was, in a way, the logical conclusion of the Republican’s push to cancel anything they don’t like.
The GOP version of cancel culture is to strike fear in the heart of anyone straying from the Trump nationalist line and lie.

  6. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_race_theory

“Critical race theory is loosely unified by two common themes: first, that white supremacy, with its societal or structural racism, exists and maintains power through the law;[6] and second, that transforming the relationship between law and racial power, and also achieving racial emancipation and anti-subordination more broadly, is possible.[7]“

So, of course, TX is banning the study of anything that smacks of critical race theory in public schools.

How can you study slavery, the Civil War, Jim Crow, the civil rights movement, BLM?

  7. WDEWT?  What does Elizabeth Warren  think?  She’s the voice I trust on all things Wall Street.

  8.  Cancel culture and critical race theory – nothing more than RW BS. what’s being canceled and please define critical race theory. Five bucks says not one of the idiots screaming about them can do both.

  9. “cancel culture” is sanctimonious twits online from their bedrooms imposing moral superiority for “likes”

Bill Maher had it right: “it’s having you crawl like a dog because they can”

  10. Just because conservatives say something doesn’t make it wrong, and just because knee-jerk liberals all decide to have the same opinion doesn’t mean they have a point

  11. Hey my fellow Mixers,
you won’t see much of me this week.  My sister arrived last night and is staying with us until the end of the week.  We are catching up as we haven’t physically seen each other or almost 3 yrs.   We live a pretty quiet life…   haven’t talked this much to any one person in ages.  OMG… I’m already going hoarse.

ps… I’m so tired of all these new phrases… cancel culture, woke, critical race theory… etc., etc.  I’m living my life and ignoring the bullshit.

  12. Crist calls on Gov. DeSantis to confront state’s role in Capitol riots (tampabay.com)

Flanked by five local elected officials and community leaders, Crist, who is running for governor in 2022, called for DeSantis to sign an executive order to launch an independent commission to investigate Florida’s ties to the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection.
There are 47 Florida residents facing charges related to the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, according to a recent analysis by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. That’s the most of any state, tied with Texas.
Florida also has more arrests of members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers — two far-right extremist groups — than any other state, according to the Herald-Tribune.
Crist, in his third term representing Florida’s 13th Congressional District in Washington D.C., said most Floridians are “kind, decent people … but this is one national list that I’m ashamed Florida is leading.”
    […]
Crist, who previously served as governor as a Republican and who announced in May his plans to run again for the seat, said he wanted his political rival to answer more questions about the 2020 election and the Capitol riot.
“The governor needs to answer the following questions: Do you acknowledge that Joe Biden is our duly elected president? Do you agree that the violent assault on our nation’s Capitol was the very definition of an insurrection itself?” he said Friday morning. “And finally, governor, do you support an independent, non-partisan commission to investigate that insurrection? We need answers from our state’s chief executive on these questions.”

  13.  too much sun drives one mad?

Florida has most Proud Boys, Oath Keepers charged in Jan. 6 riot (usatoday.com)

Florida is emerging as a cradle of the insurrection as the fallout from the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol building paints a clearer picture of those involved.
Florida is tied with Texas for the most individuals facing charges stemming from Jan. 6, with 47 arrests in each state out of the 484 total nationwide, according to a database maintained by USA Today.
And Florida leads all states in arrests of individuals associated with two far right groups – the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys – that were active in breaching the Capitol.
More than 40% of the Oath Keepers arrested on charges stemming from Jan. 6 are from Florida, and about a quarter of the Proud Boys. Floridians arrested include leaders from both groups who are accused of helping to plan the insurrection, which attempted to overturn the 2020 election results that delivered the presidency to Joe Biden over Donald Trump.
Florida’s large number of arrests related to Jan. 6 raises concerns about the prevalence of extremist groups and views in the state.
Floridians are accused of numerous acts of violence at the Capitol, with at least nine facing charges that include assaulting a police officer.

  14. new words should be: mad dog florida men go out in the noonday sun & ransack the capitol

  15. Well, no: canceling is of individuals, so examples of conservatives doing so is the censuring in state-houses and state parties of Republican office-holders who refused to participate in the GQP 2020 election lies

  16. Just because liberals say something doesn’t make it wrong, and just because conservatives knee-jerks all decide to have the same opinion doesn’t mean they have a point.

    See how that works?

  17. Peter Falk was on that Actor’s show at the New School and the moderator asked him what his favorite word was.   Peter answered, “Bupkis”.    That’s neat.   One of mine as well.  My latest deep dive is “Columbo”. There are 69 episodes, I’ve only a small few left to see, and most of the rest I’ve seen twice or more. Next I’ll find Rockford, cause I’ve already done “Maverick”.

  18. A surprise about Maverick was how many shows they did lampoons of, like Gunsmoke and the Cartwrights.

  19. “Hemingway-esque” works for me!  lol

(…and that’s coming from the Faulkner of trailmix, so…)

  20. npr:

Champ Biden, one of two German shepherds belonging to President Biden and his family has died, the president and first lady Jill Biden announced late Saturday morning. He was 13 years old.
“Our hearts are heavy today,” Biden and first lady Jill Biden wrote in a statement, adding that the dog had died at their home.
“Even as Champ’s strength waned in his last months, when we came into a room, he would immediately pull himself up, his tail always wagging, and nuzzle us for an ear scratch or a belly rub,” the statement said. “Wherever we were, he wanted to be, and everything was instantly better when he was next to us.”
    […]
Champ’s long-time loyalty was also remembered in the Bidens’ statement Saturday.
“In our most joyful moments and in our most grief-stricken days, he was there with us, sensitive to our every unspoken feeling and emotion,” the statement said. “We love our sweet, good boy and will miss him always.”

  21. Short Story of the Month:
    ”Turnabout”  by Wm Faulkner

    Some loser Critic:

Faulkner did not go to war, but when returned to his hometown, he wore the military clothing that he had bought and boasted about his heroic adventures as an officer.

Faulkner shouldn’t have written about war as an insider—he knew nothing about it, and the fiction is just as empty as his officer’s clothing when he wore it.

  22. the critical race theory doesn’t hold a candle to the theories on male dominance and superiority which have been around for years, decades & centuries and apply to half the human population around the world notwithstanding races.

it’s only been recently that the laws in this country have acknowledged women’s rights to say nothing of the continuing double standards, limitations and violence females face in this culture compared to males.

not much has changed when one considers on a continuum ranging from the present situation women face under the Taliban regime to the former potus. [lest we forget “you can get away with anything. grab them by the pussy”] statements & actions.

  23. If I had to figger starting from myself as an example, I’d tend to put more money down on White Stupidity than I would on White Supremacy.   And when I extrapolate on out from me with the ramifications of the emanations as relates to the White Section of planetary goobers…..well, first of all, the ability to accrue dinero does not in any way argue against the presence of Stupidity.
Thus the theory with the most applicability becomes the White Stupidity Theory and soooooo the operating theory out there will henceforth be the theory of White Stupidity.
They see a Little Richard and you can see their little stupid brains start to spin and churn and out comes:  PAT BOONE.   See, that makes money…….
    But…….it’s just Stupid.
    I’m still working on it.
