Just plain Joe

When was the last time you saw a POTUS do this?

Kneeling yesterday for a photo op with Medal of Honoree Col. Puckett and the day before he “got down on one knee” to show his gratitude to a Kennedy Center honoree.

Refreshing return to the concept of in the people’s service.

  1. after the 4 years of the former guy strutting, bullying braggadocio it was startling and moving to see a POTUS kneel down to accommodate a photo op for someone other than himself.  the visiting pres. moon (to me looking somewhat surprised) followed his lead and knelt too.

a new day at the people’s house.

  2. am not the only one who noticed the change

New vibe at White House: Hugs are in; masks are (mostly) out (clickorlando.com)

WASHINGTON – A smiling crowd of unmasked people filling the largest room in the White House. A visiting head of state welcomed with pomp, circumstance and handshakes. A 94-year old Medal of Honor recipient receiving a joyous hug from Vice President Kamala Harris.
The White House is springing back to life.
    […]
“We’re back,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki declared at Friday’s daily briefing. “I can confirm we’re a warm and fuzzy crew and we like to hug around here.”
The changes within the White House over the past week were swift and sweeping. Hugs were in, masks were (mostly) out. There was no need to stand six feet apart. And no one seemed to enjoy the shift more than Biden, the most back-slapping and tactile of politicians.

For the second straight day, the White House on Friday opened the East Room –- the executive mansion’s largest room –- to scores of outside guests. Smiling broadly, Biden awarded the Medal of Honor for the first time as commander in chief, giving it to 94-year-old retired Col. Ralph Puckett Jr. for acts of bravery during the Korean War some 70 years ago.
The White House timed Friday’s ceremony to coincide with the visit of South Korea’s president, Moon Jae-in, who joined Biden at the event before their policy meetings. Both world leaders repeatedly clasped Puckett’s hands and crowded in for a photo with the war hero’s extended family.
A day earlier, an even larger group of lawmakers and other guests were on hand to witness Biden sign legislation to counter an alarming spike in crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, were among the lawmakers trading hugs and kisses.
“The nicest part is being able to shake hands again and to see people’s smiles,” Collins marveled at one point.

Earlier that day, he had welcomed the newest Kennedy Center honorees to the White House for a visit that marked the return of celebrity wattage to the property.
By multiple accounts from Kennedy Center Honors recipients, the White House event was high-spirited, with Biden seemingly thrilled to have visitors.
Debbie Allen called the president, “so engaging and open. He spent a lot more time with us than I expected.”
Joan Baez said the official visit “turned into a jolly romp,” included a tour of the Rose Garden and culminated in Baez singing for Biden.

  3. the hill:

Protest songwriter and activist Baez also revealed Friday that she belted out “(Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody) Turn Me Around,” inside the Oval Office.
Breaking out into the song again for reporters, Baez recited the lyrics, “Ain’t going to let nobody turn me around, keep on walkin’, keep on talkin’, keep on singin’, keep on swingin’, gonna build a brand new world.”

here’s an old vid of baez singing that song:

Are you a Republican and desperately want to forget that Trump incited the Capitol riots? Suppress your democratic principles and subversion to violence with Insurrectigone, the powerful new drug to relieve Republican guilt. #DailyShow #Trump #Insurrection

  5. LP latest

The Republican Party, once the party of Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt, is now #TheirParty — an institution of mockery, self-dealing, and power accumulation.

  6. POTUS Joe is a remedy for what was ailing us for four years.  Just like he promised, my first dose of vax was within five miles of me the week of 4/19.   Today, I get vax number two.   POTUS Joe is a godsend.

Humility and humanity are back in the WH.

Now, we must do something about the Republicans up for election next year, as they continue to support the lie of the orange one.

  7. https://www.texastribune.org/2021/05/22/texas-critical-race-theory-legislature/

The white supremacists in Austin have been hard at work.

“…the state Senate early Saturday morning advanced a new version of a controversial bill aimed at banning critical race theory in public and open-enrollment charter schools.“

“…schools should emphasize “traditional history, focusing on the ideas that make our country great and the story of how our country has risen to meet those ideals.”

“…it stripped more than two dozen requirements to study the writings or stories of multiple women and people of color that were also previously approved by the House, despite attempts by Democratic senators to reinstate some of those materials in the bill.“

“There were documents that were chosen, not by Hispanics, not by African Americans in this body, but by Anglos,” he said. “No input from us in terms of what founding documents should in fact be considered by all children in this state.”

“Giving equal weight to all sides concerning current events would mean that the El Paso terrorist ideology would have to be given equal weight to the idea that racism is wrong…”

“…the phrase “critical race theory” has turned into a Republican rallying cry in an apparent pushback against increased conversations about diversity and inclusion and unpacking implicit bias.“

Folks, if it can’t even be discussed…
The first step in resolving a problem, is admitting you have a problem.

  8. Back in the early 70s…  I went to see Baez perform several times in the small night clubs in Harvard Square in Cambridge….  loved her!

    Go Uncle Joe…  go!

  9. Why didn’t Puckett get the Medal of Honor at the time. 70 years ago ?

  10. My then girlfriend’s grandmother around 66-67 had several Joan Baez folk music albums and she loved her. I was enthralled by the purity of her voice.    At some point in time Al Capp had begun to lampoon Joan as “Joanie Phoanie”  and that was when I parted ways with Li’l Abner.

  11. KGC, here’s wapo on that subject:

Puckett was long ago awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation’s second-highest award for valor in combat, for his actions in the battle on Nov. 25-26, 1950.
    […]
The effort to upgrade Puckett’s award in the battle began in 2003 when John Lock, a retired officer, sent a petition to the Army. Lock, who had studied Puckett’s actions, submitted numerous requests for consideration over the years, ultimately winning on appeal.
Puckett now moves into a rarefied air, even for Medal of Honor recipients recognized for valor. He also has a Distinguished Service Cross, two Silver Stars, and two Bronze Stars with V device for valor in the Vietnam War, and five Purple Hearts for injuries suffered in combat.
    […]
The president recounted that as the White House closed in recognizing Puckett, the retired colonel asked, “Why all the fuss?” Puckett had wondered if they could simply mail him the medal, rather than hosting him at the White House.
“Colonel Puckett, after 70 years, rather than mail it to you I would have walked it to you,” Biden said.

  12. also from same link:

Puckett, in remarks at the Pentagon on Thursday, called for the nation to come together, and warned that adversaries of the United States want to divide Americans.
“While we have many enemies of this country today who want to see us fall, there’s no greater enemy than ourselves,” Puckett said. “We have divided ourselves into tribes and closed our ears to all who would not think we would do what we needed to do.”

“It was a story when I was young, two teenagers, girl gets pregnant, you’ve heard those stories before..”

Yes, she just got pregnant all on her own.

“…he married the girl after she turned 15 when they were both living in Florida.“

“She was a little younger than me, so it’s like Romeo and Juliet story. A lot of pressure, pressure to abort a baby. I’m going to tell you, I wasn’t going to do it.”

    He’s never read it.

“…he’s since “almost become” estranged from his son but added, “I still love him.”

    ~family values~

This is Liz Cheney’s Republican competition.

If an 18-year old has sex with a 14-year old, isn’t that statutory rape?

  14. https://www.cnn.com/2021/05/22/investing/crypto-crash-bitcoin-regulation/index.html

“..,the past week’s volatility was enough to make some of the crypto faithful wonder whether they’ve been bamboozled. On Wednesday, a broad crypto crash wiped out about $1 trillion in market value…”

“…Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell warned about potential risks cryptocurrencies pose to the financial system. Powell also said the central bank would publish a paper this summer that will explore the implications of the US government developing a digital currency of its own.”

If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em, I guess.
