  1. Just under two thousand dead each day of COVID, many more not counted.  This is not over.  Mask, sanitizer and washing hands.  Maybe when the daily death toll is under one hundred I will reconsider.

  2. Ukraine war: Russian soldier surrenders to Ukrainians who feed him and ring his mum | Metro News

A moving video shows the moment a captured Russian soldier breaks down in tears on a video call to his mother after surrendering to Ukrainians.

The young man is seen drinking tea and eating a pasty as he is comforted by locals who offer him a phone so he can tell his family he is safe.

The young prisoner of war blows kisses as his mother answers, and bursts into tears as soon as he sees her.

A Ukrainian woman pats him on the head and says down the phone: ‘Don’t worry Natasha, he’s alive and well. You will get a call later.’

  3. Bloomberg Quicktake: Now

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy told Russian soldiers to retreat, saying nearly 9,000 Russians have been killed in the past week since the invasion. Zelenskiy gave an upbeat assessment of the war in a video statement released early Thursday, and called on Ukrainians to keep up the resistance. He referred to those aged 19 and 20 as “confused children who have been used” and told them to “go home” with the entire Russian army. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces claimed Wednesday to have taken complete control of Kherson, but Zelenskiy didn’t comment on whether the Russians have seized several cities. Instead, he said he was convinced that “if they went somewhere, then temporarily.” “We’ll drive them out. With disgrace,” he added.

My recommendations: 1 I cannot demand NATO attack Russian forces directly, but I can speak from history & knowledge of Putin. A dictator who has already crossed every line cannot be prevented from escalating with restraint. If he destroys Ukraine, he won’t stop. 6/13

  5. sturge, about your question

that’s above my pay grade and technical skill.  good idea though.  a congress critter (a GOPer senator in fact) on tv yesterday was sporting a USA and Ukraine flag pin.

  6. Jan. 6 panel sees evidence of Trump ‘criminal conspiracy’ (msn.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House panel investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol said Wednesday for the first time that its evidence suggests crimes may have been committed by former President Donald Trump and his associates in the failed effort to overturn the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.

Trump and his associates engaged in a “criminal conspiracy” to prevent Congress from certifying Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the Electoral College, the House committee said in a court filing. Trump and those working with him spread false information about the outcome of the presidential election and pressured state officials to overturn the results, potentially violating multiple federal laws, the panel said.

“The Select Committee also has a good-faith basis for concluding that the President and members of his Campaign engaged in a criminal conspiracy to defraud the United States,” the committee wrote in a filing submitted in U.S. District Court in the Central District of California.

The 221-page filing marks the committee’s most formal effort to link the former president to a federal crime, though the actual import of the filing is not clear. Lawmakers do not have the power to bring criminal charges on their own and can only make a referral to the Justice Department. The department has been investigating last year’s riot, but it has not given any indication that it is considering seeking charges against Trump.

Putin’s war on Ukraine has entered its next phase, one of destruction and slaughter of civilians. It is also a part of Putin’s World War, a war on the civilized world of international law, democracy, and any threat to his power, which he declared long ago. 1/13

  8. Amid reports of ill-equipped troops quitting the fight, the Russian military continues to target civilians in Ukraine while the U.S. and other countries move to seize superyachts belonging to Putin’s oligarch cronies.

  9. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said 16,000 “volunteers” were coming to defend to the country against Russian troopers.

  10. wapo:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday said that 16,000 foreigners have volunteered to fight for Ukraine against the Russian invasion.
In an emotional video posted to his Telegram channel, Zelensky referenced the “international legion” of foreign volunteers he sought to defend Ukraine. Earlier this week, Ukraine temporarily lifted visa requirements for foreign volunteers who wish to enter the country and join the fight against Russian forces.
While foreign citizens have been fighting in Ukraine since 2014, when Russia-backed separatists seized parts of the Donbas region, experts who track foreign fighters say this push is a step far beyond that in ambition.
It remains unclear where the volunteers are coming from, and Zelensky did not expand on the topic in his video. So far, most of the foreign fighters in Ukraine are from other post-Soviet states like Georgia and Belarus — but media reports suggest there is interest from around the world.
Dozens of Japanese men, mostly former members of the Self-Defense Forces, have applied to fight in Ukraine, according to the Tokyo newspaper Japan TodayThe Times in Britain reported that “hundreds of Britons” have written to the Ukrainian Embassy wanting to sign up for the fight. Some in the United States and Canada are also signing up in New York City. Christian Gonzalez of Yonkers, N.Y., told the New York Daily News that signing up to fight with the Ukrainians was “a no-brainer.”
“They have a bully that’s bullying people around him,” said Gonzalez, 35, of Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Why not fight for a greater cause? Even if it’s just pulling people out of rubble. Even if it’s just aiding. It’s history in the making.”
Officials in various European nations have allowed or appeared to encourage their nationals to fight on behalf of Ukraine, but some countries also have laws that could prohibit citizens from traveling to participate in this war. Meanwhile, experts have warned that it is dangerous for those with no military training to travel to Ukraine to fight.
Zelensky praised Ukrainians for fighting back against Putin’s forces, while slamming the Russian president a week into the invasion.
“And if someone thinks that, having overcome all this, Ukrainians, all of us, we will get scared, break down or give up — he simply does not know anything about us,” Zelensky said, calling on Putin to “go home.” “He knows nothing about Ukraine. And he has nothing to do here.”

  11. Former President Donald Trump promised his supporters an “impenetrable” border wall between the United States and Mexico. Instead, the $15 billion wall was reportedly breached thousands of times in areas where it was completed, and the smugglers who cut through it were able to do so with cheap power tools available in retail stores.
Unpublished data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection obtained via the Freedom of Information Act showed that Mexican smugglers cut through the wall 3,272 times over three years, according to The Washington Post. In some cases, they replaced the areas they cut with tinted putty, essentially creating secret passages.
“You have to look really closely to see it,” one source told the newspaper.

  12. Putin means to have all-out war. Unless he’s stopped in Ukraine you can go ahead and get ready cause that hell-bound train is rolling. He wants to be attacked so he can cut loose.
Biden is doing a really fine job of it. Go get ‘em.

  13. We really did elect a republican traitor.  The gop drove that Welfare Caddilac all the way to Moscow.

  14. Bob, sounds like the smugglers are building that wall back.  No idea what the steel specs are, but apparently whatever steel is being used isn’t sufficiently hard to stand up to a battery powered angle grinder (my best guess at the cutting tool of choice from Walmart or Lowes (or its Mexican equivalent)).

Zelenskiy calls for direct talks with Putin as ‘only way to stop war’

  16. Letters of Marque. Ron Paul tried to revive those after the 9/11 attacks and again to fight Somali pirates. Congress didn’t bite. (Now there’s someone you might not want to associate with).  If he were alive today Captain Kidd might give captains who operate under such orders a cautionary message – keep all your paperwork and get a really good lawyer.

  17. msn:

“The end of the world has arrived,” Zelensky said during a televised news conference in Kyiv.
    […]
The Ukrainian leader also called for direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Good Lord, what do you want? Leave our land. If you don’t want to leave now, sit down with me at the negotiating table. But not from 30 meters away, like with [French President Emmanuel] Macron and [German Chancellor Olaf] Scholz,” Zelensky said, according to a translation from journalist Max Seddon, the Financial Times’ Moscow bureau chief. The “30 meters” line appears to be a reference to the lengthy table Putin uses for meetings with foreign leaders and his own advisers.
“Sit down with me and talk. What are you afraid of? We’re no threat to anyone,” Zelensky added.

  18. Russia Expert Fiona Hill Reveals How It Could All Go South For Vladimir Putin

Russian affairs expert Fiona Hill said there is one group of people in particular that Russian President Vladimir Putin “probably has to worry about” more than anyone else if his invasion of Ukraine doesn’t go as planned.
It’s not Russia’s obscenely rich oligarchs, who face economic sanctions and seizures of their assets worldwide, the former top analyst on the National Security Council told Stephen Colbert on Wednesday’s broadcast of “The Late Show.”
Instead, it’s the “very small circle” — such as Russia’s heads of intelligence, military and security services — who cooked up the invasion plan with Putin, said Hill.
“These are not the kind of guys who have yachts off Monaco, palaces in Paris or anything like this,” Hill explained. “These are people who are very much rooted in Russia itself and I don’t think they’re too worried about all of these sanctions and everything that’s cut off, because they’re not invested in the West. They’ve really got that bunker siege mentality — fortress Russia.”
Members of this small circle are who Putin “probably does have to worry about” if “it looks like Russia is losing,” said Hill, an intelligence analyst under former President George W. Bush and Barack Obama who later served on the National Security Council under Donald Trump. Hill was an important witness during Trump’s first impeachment.
“I don’t think they care about the world of public opinion,” Hill added. “But if there’s not any movement on the ground, if that great convoy of tanks just basically runs out of gas and is just left there, and if they have to kind of lay waste to Ukraine to basically get a success … you might then start to get a backlash from those people who are thinking this has not gone as they intended.”

  19. When it comes to the Russian military types and Putin, I worry that they might prefer going out with a bang rather than a whimper.

  20. Stump is hoping that his buddy-daddy V-Lad can install him as puppet dictator after he wins the coming war.
Hey, it’s a long shot with a limb in the way, but it beats breathing pond water, eh?

  21. I think Putin could be in danger from his military, They are embarrassed. Like any military they want to be big and bad, the Kleptocracy that Putin represents has been shorting them and stealing off the top. That puts Putin in the hot seat, unlike Afghan’s president he can’t stuff bags full of cash and leave town. There is nowhere to go, and they are hunting down all his money even if he could get out of town.

  22. I just got an email from a reality TV recruiter, I’m probably on her email list because I had a back and forth about doing a show with my neighborhood stuff  that  never happened. Any way this one is much more thought out, is a new age version of Horders based on  the popular book, ‘The Gentle Art of Swedish death cleaning”. They were basically looking for me as I was a year ago. In transition with a big mess on my hands.
After I laughed a bit, after all it was like someone sent a joke email to me. I replied that I would share her email. I received a nice reply.
Later I did a little research and discovered that the producer is the same one producing the show “Make It” a crafter competition show. Then I really started laughing, they missed out.  As you all may remember Sherry was a life long crafter.  The hardest problem I had was throwing her half finished projects away, because, “Sherry made this”
If they had talked to me last year they would have seen laughter and tears all mixed up, in other words “good tv”

”Putin is spinning the nuclear button around his finger like an inexpensive car keychain”

(-from this interview, once again worth watching, which is why i’m
    posting it)

  24. The interviewee, former deputy supreme allied commander of NATO, Richard Sherriff, briefly touches upon how our piece of human-garbage 45th president undermined NATO with his public equivocation about it and how not even the current administration is trusted to honor its NATO commitments as a result.  He also calls for more overt displays of American military strength on NATO’s eastern front to prevent Putin from escalating the conflict further by encroaching on potentially soft Eastern European borders

  25. Almost no European contributors to whom i’ve listened believe Western sanctions will end the war or topple the Putin regime

  26. …obviously a deliberate attempt to scare the local population around the nuclear plant to abandon the region to Russia
