  1. In many Indigenous cultures, a solar eclipse is for honoring tradition | Indigenous peoples | The Guardian

The Diné, Klamath and Creek prepare for Saturday’s eclipse in a variety of ways, from silence and reflection to the sharing of stories
    […]
In Oklahoma, off the main path of the eclipse, other tribes are recounting origin stories of eclipses, said Chris Hill, a cultural specialist for Native American programming at Tulsa public schools. In his own Muscogee (Creek) Nation tribe, the 66 tribal towns each have a unique story surrounding eclipses, he said.
The story he grew up with was that a rabbit being chased by a little boy transformed into a “little person” and offered the boy three wishes. After food and friends, the boy asked for shade. So the little person lobbed cornmeal at the sun, covering it, and proclaimed the moon and sun have been brought together. The little person then teaches the boy a “friendship dance”. The eclipse symbolizes that friendship.

  2. If it were not for the looming shutdown of the federal government, two wars in foreign countries which require American assistance, and the general operation of the legislative branch of the U.S., having the anti-American clown show out of town is a good thing.  For many of them the times are difficult as their planned, and unplanned, television screwball act is not being picked up.  Oh, the agony and pain of not being headline material.  Their antics are minor compared to what is happening in Israel and Ukraine. No spotlight, no top of the fold quotes and no fun.

Another rant (in my long list of rants), I am tired of the stupid lists of things like ‘1000 Boomer things that are obsolete’.  Sorry folks what we learned growing up is not the same as what our grandparents learned.  Although those skills are useful if you are living off grid on a farm.  One that twists my drawers is how paper maps are no longer needed.  Last weekend my friend and I went off to tour the land my ancestors settled in the sixteen hundreds.

Although I knew the roads I wanted to show my friend the big picture.  The Garmin 60 was not up to the job. I pulled out a fresh (not rain washed) paper map of Maryland. With the map unfolded and the section of Delmarva in front of us we could see the whole thing.  I could point out the string of settlements my greats made and the reason.  There was a river they followed from the Chesapeake Bay to the Atlantic Ocean. Travel was by water back then.  After talking for a while about ancient history, I folded the map, a skill learned many years ago, and we continued up the road to get ice cream at the next town.

  3. Haley says House members don’t need pay ‘until they fix this’ amid Speakership chaos | The Hill

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley says members of the House don’t need to get paid “until they fix this” as the House scrambles to fill the Speakership vacancy left after Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was ousted from the role.

“They don’t need to leave until they fix this. They don’t need to get paid until they fix this,” Haley said in response to a question about how she would handle the GOP chaos if she was in the Oval Office, according to footage shared by Forbes.

nikki, “shouldn’t” would have been better wording in place of the “don’t need to” phrases in your

“They don’t need to leave until they fix this. They don’t need to get paid until they fix this”

in fact the chamber doors should be barred with the critters locked in, food and drink limited and no outside communications allowed until the deed is done including legislation to keep the gov’t open through 2024.

  4. Patd

Pope Gregory X’s decree during the Second Council of Lyons in 1274 that the cardinal electors should be locked in seclusion cum clave (Latin for ‘with a key’) and not permitted to leave until a new pope had been elected.

Should the Republicans send up white smoke once the deed is done?

  5. Trump Falsely Claims Hamas Crossing US Border

Trump in a video released yesterday: “Same people we have pouring into our country by the thousands. Are they planning to attack within our country? Crooked Joe Biden and his boss Barack Hussein Obama did this to us. We cannot let this happen. They may be planning something very very bad…people are pouring in from the Middle East into our country, largely males, strong young males. What’s going on over here? Are we going to be raided like Israel was raided?”

Politifact rated this as “pants on fire” false: “Terrorism experts told us that there is no evidence that Hamas, a terrorist group in Gaza, has militants crossing the Mexico-U.S. border, much less in record numbers. … We asked his campaign for evidence and received no reply”

  6. Craig, that’s his exact script from the escalator speech. Have his peeps not yet learned it’s empty rhetoric?

  7. Where is Jared-holier-than-your-average-Jew? He should be denouncing his despicable father-in-law. And the daughter too. It’s painful when Dad goes off the rails, but you have to speak up.

  8. wouldn’t be surprised if his BFF putie hears the call and sends a few faux hamas over the border just like he did when asked to find hillary’s emails.  easily done with an AI generated Xtweet vid.

Bill warns that technology and safetyism are leading to a public health crisis of loneliness, isolation, and lack of connection

  10. Matt Gaetz on CNN says Jordan will win next week: “Once the vote is public it will be difficult to stand on the floor of the House and vote against the second most popular Republican in the country”. That is a not so veiled threat: Trump will be watching

  11. I didn’t listen to the Maher expounding on the loneliness crises. I’m not interested in comedians pontificating on subjects they are clueless about. Especially Maher.
There was no idealistic time when everyone looked out for each other and nobody was lonely. In a large part it is a natural occurrence from growing old, you live long enough and all the people you know are dead. Your children are busy with their lives.
So if you aren’t out there actively recruiting new acquaintances, then you suddenly look around and say “where the f*ck is everybody”. I suspect we are calling a “crises” because now it is happening to Boomers so that makes it special and important.
John Prine noticed it 50 years ago when he was a mailman and fledgling song writer.

  12. We had a nice enough eclipse in eastern CO. Not as exciting as the one in 2017. In retrospect that day was the only happy day of the entire Trump presidency.

    Sad.

  13. Missed what was the edge of the eclipse here; watching the three-hour, Taylor Swift concert movie, instead.

Let’s hope that threat of a public vote doesn’t come enough Republicans to install a traitor as SOTH.   We are fighting fascism every day.

It’s time for everyone to face down the schoolyard bully.

  14. Ivy
Hang around and in 2045 Colorado will have a total eclipse over most of the state from NW to SE. What is 20 years?
Or better yet we can all go hang out with BiD next April in Dallas
    Jack

  15. April in Dallas? Chances of skies filled with storm clouds are likely.
If Gym forces a vote, Hakeem will be SOTH.  “Karma is my boyfriend…”
