Veep Stakes

Let’s get outside the box at this early stage.

Take a look at our first Democratic Latina governor, who served in Congress and in state cabinet:

Michelle Lujan Grisham is the thirty-second governor of the state of New Mexico, the first Democratic Latina to be elected governor in U.S. history.

As governor, Lujan Grisham has implemented a series of evidence-based policies aimed at transforming New Mexico’s public education system, expanding the state’s economy to include more high-quality employment opportunities and preserving New Mexico’s air, land and water. In 2019, she oversaw one of the most productive legislative sessions in state history, signing a broad package of bipartisan bills into law, notably a historic investment in public education and a landmark transition to clean energy.

A longtime state Cabinet secretary at both the New Mexico Department of Aging and Long-term Services and Department of Health, Lujan Grisham has been a leading advocate for senior citizens, veterans and the disabled as well as investments in health care infrastructure and innovative programming that has improved access and quality of care for New Mexicans across the state.

She was elected to the U.S. Congress in 2011, serving three terms in Washington on behalf of New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District. As a member of Congress, she worked aggressively to support local tribes, equal pay for women, public schools, public lands and veterans’ health care; she also advocated strongly for saving and creating clean New Mexico jobs. As chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, she became a vocal, national leader in the battle against reactionary federal anti-immigrant policies.

Driven by a deep compassion for seniors and those living with disabilities, and with experience as a caregiver herself, Lujan Grisham introduced and led the push for Care Corps, an innovative caregiving initiative that places volunteers in communities to provide non-medical services to seniors and individuals with disabilities. With this support, people can continue to live independently in their homes and communities.

Lujan Grisham was born in Los Alamos and graduated from St. Michael’s High School in Santa Fe before earning undergraduate and law degrees from the University of New Mexico. A 12th-generation New Mexican, she is the mother of two adult children and grandmother of three. She is the caretaker for her mother, Sonja.

  1. and a judge judges barr’s bad

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/mueller-report-attorney-general-william-barr/2020/03/05/3fa7afce-5f2c-11ea-b29b-9db42f7803a7_story.html

In his 23-page opinion, Walton said he had “grave concerns about the objectivity of the process” that led up to the public release of the Mueller report. “The Court cannot reconcile certain public representations made by Attorney General Barr with the findings in the Mueller Report,” he wrote. “These circumstances generally, and Attorney General Barr’s lack of candor specifically, call into question Attorney General Barr’s credibility.”
The judge said he would not take Justice Department lawyers at their word that redactions in the report were all done for appropriate reasons.

  2. wiki on michelle lujan grisham family background politics:

Lujan Grisham says that her ancestors have inhabited New Mexico for 12 generations. She is part of a prominent contemporary political family in New Mexico, many of whose members have served in elected and appointed positions in government. Her uncle, Manuel Lujan Jr., served in the US House of Representatives from New Mexico as a Republican, and as Secretary of the Interior during the presidency of George H. W. Bush. He was the named petitioner in the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case Lujan v. Defenders of Wildlife. Her grandfather, Eugene Lujan, was Chief Justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court. Her cousin, Ben Ray Luján, represents New Mexico’s 3rd congressional district in the House of Representatives, while his father, Ben Luján, was Speaker of the New Mexico House of Representatives.

  3. I lived briefly in New Mexico as a child and over time have visited.  My former stepmother was one of those 12 generation New Mexican families similar to the ones descended from the old Californios.  If Governor Grisham is as good as she looks on paper, she would make a magnificent VP nominee to balance Biden:

Female, Hispanic, experienced, progressive record, younger and from the west.

Biden holds the moderate and black parts of the base.  Grisham or someone similar could help with the  Hispanice and progressive pieces.  I would help conserve the current Senate while trying to get those much needed four additions.   It would probably give SFB apoplexy.

  4. Jamie, being a governor with successful governing experience plus the legislative background is even better.

  5. I don’t know her.   She sounds great, but I don’t know her.  There will be a steep curve if Biden picks her.   Hoping for Klobuchar, personally.     PatD mentioned Abrams, who at least is not completely off the radar for most anyone outside of her home state.  Either one could out-debate Pence (or Hayley).
If Liz isn’t having what Bernie’s having (and I hope she isn’t), I can only imagine Tulsi-G-I wish-you’d-go-away as his veep.
Two vehicles (one was a semi)  pulled out in front of me on the way to the office.  It feels like my throat is bleeding from screaming at them.  So much for bless, and curse not.  Sorry, Lent.

  6. speaking of dogs, Jamie, it seems we haven’t yet heard the last of bailey

A video posted to Twitter by Gabrielle Farrell, the Warren campaign’s traveling press secretary, shows Bailey swiping a burrito out of someone’s hand, followed by several people frantically trying to get the golden retriever to let go of the burrito.

  7. I hesitated to say this, but…my best friend in TX is Hispanic.  She’s in her 70s and welcomed me into her family when I moved here.  Both of her parents were from Mexico.  It may be different in other areas of the country, but she says that Hispanics do not get along with AAs and vice versa.    If there is any larger truth to that,  would AAs feel slighted that he picked a Hispanic person as veep?

  8. NYTimes best of late night on lizzie’s departure:

“Warren was an incredibly competent, pragmatic, intelligent and well-spoken — in other words, she never had a chance.” — SETH MEYERS
“In spite of her experience, her track record and her skills in the debates, American voters ultimately decided she just didn’t have what they were looking for in a president, which is a penis.” — JIMMY KIMMEL
“Yeah, after a lot of thought and reflection, Warren realized she was overqualified for the job.” — JIMMY FALLON
“Yeah, apparently, America isn’t ready to have a president who’s only 70.” — CONAN O’BRIEN
“Honestly, I can’t say I blame Elizabeth Warren for dropping out. If there was ever a time you’d want to stop shaking millions of hands, this might be it.” — JIMMY FALLON
“Warren is gone. That’s it. She’s out of the race. Further proof that America cannot have nice things.” — STEPHEN COLBERT

  9. I want Biden to pick a woman.  I trust his staff to do a good job of vetting… so I will trust his choice.  I don’t think he’ll pick anyone from the Senate or the Congress (although I love Dex’s suggestion of Katie Porter).  I like your choice, Craig…. she sounds wonderful.

  10. BTW…. I gave up the last period of the hockey game to watch Rachel’s interview with Liz.  Loved it!  If you’re a fan (I’m looking at you,  bink) and didn’t see it, I highly recommend finding it.

  11. After reflection about Bernie!’s blowing his Mississippi rally off to run to Michigan – it strikes me as trying to do damage control after Michigan’s governor came out with a strong endorsement of Joe, citing the Obama admin support of the Flint water crisis and the GM bailout.

Of course as an old white man, I know it’s not really possible to tell what’s going on in an old white man’s head (and I can’t imagine it would be easier to do in one 10 years older than mine) but I can’t imagine there is any consideration of a man for VP in the Biden camp – or in the Bernie! camp for that matter. Lots of really good options out there, and the options are more colorful than the candidates (if you ignore the Orange incumbent, although I think his VP is soooooo white that he almost offsets the spray tan). Not sure what I’d do with that because neither Hispanics nor blacks are likely to choose SFB over either Joe or even Bernie! as opposed to SFB.

  12. BTW… Chuck Schumer is an imbecile!  There’s no playing nice and by the rules while trump is in office.  He should have shown a set and stood on the Senate floor and told CJ Roberts that he’d apologize when Roberts admonished trump for his remarks on Kagan and Sotomayor.  Putz!

  13. I’d like to hear from Blonde Wino
afterall until people took a closer look people thought a lot of Sarah Palin

  14. There were several moments in Liz interview with Rachel that it came across she’s furious at the Bernie bros. I did a spit take at this one:

Have you ever talked to Senator Sanders about [his abusive online followers]?”

    WARREN : “I have.”

MADDOW: “What was that conversation like?”

    WARREN: “It was short.”

  15. Liz had nothing to say about Bernie as a person, other than their agreement on issues. What she said about Biden was strikingly different, while saying they disagree on some issues:

“He is exactly who he says he is. He is a decent guy, I mean a good decency. And it comes through in pretty much everything he does.”

  16. Watched it Jamie. Not the major part of the show but thought Bill’s regrets about how Monica treated disingenuous at best. I well remember his camp blaming her. And he’s never done anything to make amends to her. Hillary, however, comes across throughout as a genuine champion for women. She deserves a better legacy than he does.

  17. I don’t think Liz thinks all
that much of Joe.  Kind of damning with
    feint praise.

  18. the hill:

The House is asking a full appeals court to rehear its case for subpoenaing former White House counsel Don McGahn after a divided three-judge panel ruled last week that congressional subpoenas of the executive branch are legally unenforceable.
Lawyers for the House Judiciary Committee warned the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals in a court filing on Friday that if the decision were to stand, it would undermine Congress’s constitutional role.
    […]
Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said the decision would “severely undermine the House’s ability to perform its constitutional functions as a check on the Executive Branch.”
“In fact, none other than President Trump’s own lawyers told the American people over and over again during the impeachment trial that the House should have gone to court to enforce its subpoenas,” Nadler said in a statement. “The full Court should promptly rehear this case and make clear, once and for all, that White House aides cannot ignore subpoenas from Congress. Now more than ever, the courts cannot abandon their responsibility to resolve these critical legal disputes.”

  19. Bill’s smart enough to know he’s crapped all in his mess kit, historically speaking.  Had a great economy though.

  20. pogo, for your problem, this may help

    https://donottouchyourface.com/

    according to the guardian

“Don’t touch your face” is an easy command to interpret but, for some of us, a surprisingly hard one to follow even though we have been told it is among the best ways to avoid infection by the coronavirus. A new website hopes to help, by shouting at you if you touch your face.
Donottouchyourface.com uses a simple machine-learning algorithm to recognise images of each individual user touching their face, and not touching their face.
Once it’s been trained, it can be left in an open tab or a minimised window, and uses web notifications to ping you if you touch your face – or, if you leave the window visible, to put a large red NO on screen.

  21. So much thought provoking stuff in Hillary documentary on Hulu, but found her comments here especially telling, talking about her law school days: “In those days you got no points for being emotional. You got no points for fighting back to defend yourself. You worked hard, put your head down and got to where you were going despite whatever obstacles. And when you train yourself to think like that, then fast forward to an age when everybody wants to see what your emotions are and how you respond to all that it’s really a different environment.”

  22. I don’t know why people don’t like Hillary but a lot of people don’t.   All she did was be loyal to Bill and be ambitious.

  23. Looks like someone’s been tinkering with the site – that was a very quick login for a change.

Patd, that’s great and might work at work, except my monitors don’t have cameras on them.  And for that app to work on my phone it would have to see my face from its normal resting place in my left rear pants pocket.

Bink, that comment sounds a lot like Obama’s comment to Hillary that she was likable enough. Left handed compliment at best.

  24. Hmmm.  Warren went to law school and is plenty emotional and engaging  while still being in control.  Maybe Rutgers didn’t have a no-feelings requirement like Hillary’s law school.     I am one of this who is not a fan of Hillary.  Republican, Wal-Mart lawyer, stayed with her cheating hubby because she had political ambitions of her own.   Every time she exercises her constitutionally-protected right to free speech to weigh in on the election, I cringe because she is only doing it to feel relevant.

  25. Unfortunately, the first woman in the WH could be Ivanker if we don’t stop her lying daddy this year, and,  shine a spotlight on all of his evil spawn.

  26. On Monday Trump Administration said there’d be a million virus tests out by today, hasn’t happened and just now Pence said next week. This is a freaking joke. The Katrina of public health.

  27. Trump was afraid to go to the CDC, at first. Don’t worry.  Not much virus can stick to those tiny hands.
    The test kits are “beautiful.”

  28. My insurance co sent out a notice that they will cover Covid-19 testing completely.  No co-pay.  They are covering it as they do annual exams.     Of course, there actually being tests available when needed…

  29. After 9/11, ABC aired a special Nightline showing how a biological attack would spread if they infected a subway on a Friday after work.   Now that Covid-19 has been in Grand Central, I wonder if Nightline was accurate?

  30. Hillary in Hulu documentary: “Bernie just drove me crazy. He was in Congress for years. He had one senator support him. Nobody likes him, nobody wants to work with him. He got nothing done. He was a career politician. He did not work until he was 41 and then he got elected to something. It was all just baloney and I feel so bad people got sucked into it.”

  31. I’m not a huge fan of HRC’s, but she’s a damned sight better than Dukakis or Kerry. I don’t see Dems casting those two in the roles of Satan. We don’t have to claim Hillary was flawless, either.
We shouldn’t forget that she won the popular vote by a margin 4 times larger than those of JFK and nixon’s ’68 comeback – combined !

  32. Thanks for the lampoon of The Song of Hiawatha, Mr Sturgeone. That Milkanwatha was one smart fellow. Good he made his gloves for outside, while he sat in warmth on inside.

  33. BiD

You may want to watch the HULU “Hillary”.  It truly is warts and all, but just might change your mind about the real woman rather than the media/Sanders lies.

  34. SFB’s latest – he doesn’t want to let the folks on the cruise ship being held offshore in CA waters back into the US because he “like[s] the numbers” as they are and he doesn’t want to double the US numbers by letting them disembark into the country. Jesusfuckingchrist what a moron.

  35. The “Sanders” lies?  Nobody cares what Bernie thinks.   The Clintons are taking up air meant for the Dem primary.   I am so done with both of them.

  36. Just wait until everyone who went through Grand Central Station starts presenting.    Trump is dejected and surrendering; he was wearing his giant, white flag pants to the CDC.

  37. A couple of days ago the health department and other crises management folks held a new conference about Covid19. It was a lot of platitudes, and wash your hands blahblahblah,  and blahblah, blahblahblah. Don’t worry blahblah, we’ve got this under control blahblah flu blahblah.
Then yesterday the health department director at a city council meeting said they only had 5 kits to test for the virus. This drew quite a bit of comment given that Kansas City population is 500,000. Then someone tried to say that each kit could test 800 people…….   “No”, came the reply, 1 kit 1 person. Now it turns out that the 800 number came from a kit that goes to the State processing lab and it can process 800 samples.
BTW the whole state of Missouri has 1 of those.
    Can anybody say screwed?
    Jack

  38. 3 saudi royals are up for beheading, including one of the dictator’s brothers.

I suppose that mbs will claim the movie rights.

  39. Jack, I thought you were a smart guy. KC is safe.  If no one tests positive for coronavirus there then you have joe danger of catching it right?  Isn’t that how it works in SFB’s world of immunology?

  40. Yep, kinda like I say, if you don’t go to the meetings you can’t be an alcoholic.
I was listening to NPR and someone pointed out that there has to be a lot of undetected cases out there because right now the death rate is running around 10%. Which is more than a little high. I may be bit stupid here but I do hope that there is more testing capacity in the private/nonprofit sector.
    Jack

  41. Barr has arrived. He’s now half-officially Trump’s Roy Cohn.  The redacted parts of the Mueller investigation changed the entire temper of the report.  That judge, the Bush43 appointee, is about to blow the lid off the telling redacted paragraphs and pages.  What will become of this?  We can hope at least exposure to the truth.    Now yeah, it appears that Bernie and Liz sprout the same feathers, there is distance of likeability.  2 days ago I was sure that when Bernie accepts the nomination  this summer, he would pick Liz.  Nope.  So again I mention my favorite, Kathy Porter of Orange County, CA.   Her intro from a Wikipedia page:   <<  Katherine Moore Porter is an American law professor, attorney, and politician serving as the U.S. Representative for California’s 45th congressional district since 2019. Wikipedia

Born: January 3, 1974 (age 46 years), Fort Dodge, IA

    Nationality: American

Office: Representative (DCA 45th District) since 2019

    SpouseMatthew Hoffman (m. ?–2013)

EducationHarvard Law School (2001), Yale University (1996), Phillips Academy — Andover  >>

  42. …when in doubt, Tame Impala’s new album!  (back to the NV caucus thread!)

    Edit: Wow.

…also grateful i’m sharing this world with Kevin Parker, and you, too!

Edit2: to my kin: mick deserves the “silent treatment”, please give it to him

  43. BiD, re yourEvery time she exercises her constitutionally-protected right to free speech to weigh in on the election, I cringe because she is only doing it to feel relevant.”   is just “to feel relevant” the only reason we (including you) here on the trail are proclaiming political opinions?
