Howard Lutnick’s real estate ties to financier and child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein are once again drawing scrutiny, given the commerce secretary’s apparent support for President Donald Trump’s dismissal of what he described as “the Epstein case.”
A 2019 investigation by Crain’s found that Epstein—in addition to his infamous townhouse at 9 East 71st Street in Manhattan, also known as the Herbert N. Straus House—had significant links to the adjacent property, which real estate records show is still owned by Lutnick.
In addition to being his neighbor, real estate records show that Epstein was also listed as an owner of the property prior to Lutnick purchasing it in 1998.
As first revealed in Crain’s 2019 investigation, a now-dissolved entity with links to Epstein called SAM Conversion Corp. bought 11 E. 71st St. in 1988. It was later sold for an unknown consideration to a specialized trust, then to another, the Comet Trust, in 1996. The latter, Crain’s found, had financial and familial ties to an individual whose name appeared in Epstein’s “black book” of contacts, obtained by the FBI during its investigation.
In addition, property records seen by Newsweek show that Epstein was listed as the trustee of the building during these transactions and transfers, while playing a direct role in them. Epstein granted his lawyer Jeffrey Schantz power of attorney over the property in 1996, selling it to the Comet Trust a few weeks later.
In 1998, the Comet Trust sold the property to Lutnick, who took out a $4 million mortgage for the purchase, which was paid off in 2018.

There have been eight shutdowns since 1990. Trump has now presided over four.
But this shutdown is different.
For one thing, it’s the consequence of a decision, made in July by Trump and Senate Republicans, to pass Trump’s gigantic “big beautiful bill” (which I prefer to term “the big ugly” bill) without any Democratic votes.
Trump and Senate Republicans didn’t need a single Democrat then. But this time, Republicans couldn’t use the arcane reconciliation process to pass a bill to keep the government going.
Now they needed Senate Democratic votes.
In fact, the eagerness of Trump and his lapdogs over the last eight months to disregard the will of Congress and close whatever they want of the government offers another reason why Democrats shouldn’t have caved in.
Had Democrats voted to keep the government going, what guarantee would they have had that Trump would in fact keep the government going?
Democrats finally have some bargaining leverage. They should use it.
That’s the loud-and-clear signal that Trump and Patel have been sending to the FBI, while they shift agents to street crime tasks and ICE assistance. The Comey indictment is merely the exclamation point on the don’t-fuck-with-us message conveyed to all federal law enforcement. Special Agent Dobson is no fool. He knows the saying used to be that justice is blind. In Trump’s second term, it’s now justice is blind to the crimes of Trump and his gang—and if you dare take a glance in their direction, we’ll rip your eyes out.
In 2001, Congress implemented partial Medicare coverage for telehealth, allowing remote visits with doctors and other forms of long-distance care—a response to the increasing need, in particular, for people in rural areas to reach specialists, and an essential service especially after the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, when lawmakers expanded that coverage to a broad range of services now used by a quarter of the country’s 68 million Medicare users.
But Wednesday’s federal budget impasse has halted that funding—and unlike other, temporary service cuts brought on by the shutdown, telehealth won’t be restored for long just by bringing the government back online.
As a consequence of the temporary way it was funded, Congress has had to renew Medicare telehealth coverage roughly annually since 2021.
This latest termination is linked to the government shutdown that began Wednesday: Medicare telehealth funds were tied to the failed continuing resolution for the federal budget, which would have funded government operations for just seven more weeks. But the repeated expirations of a program with bipartisan support, which Congress has repeatedly agreed to continue, look increasingly ridiculous to health care advocates and federal government observers.
“Telehealth allows for the earlier detection and treatment of conditions that otherwise would be escalated to much more costly levels of care, like being admitted to a hospital or an emergency room,” Homovich said.
Kelley also cautioned that the expiration of Medicare telehealth waivers could have a knock-on impact for people on private health insurance.
“While this may not immediately affect patients with commercial insurance, commercial payers generally follow Medicare guidance,” Kelley said,” and depending on when or if the waivers are reinstated, this could eliminate coverage for telemedicine across the board for all Americans.”

NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump is openly embracing the conservative blueprint he desperately tried to distance himself from during the 2024 campaign, as one of its architects works to use the government shutdown to accelerate his goals of slashing the size of the federal workforce and punishing Democratic states.
In a post on his Truth Social site Thursday morning, Trump announced he would be meeting with his budget chief, “Russ Vought, he of PROJECT 2025 Fame, to determine which of the many Democrat Agencies, most of which are a political SCAM, he recommends to be cut, and whether or not those cuts will be temporary or permanent.”
The comments represented a dramatic about-face for Trump, who spent much of last year denouncing Project 2025, The Heritage Foundation’s massive proposed overhaul of the federal government, which was drafted by many of his longtime allies and current and former administration officials.

Todd Arrington, the director of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum & Boyhood Home in Abilene, Kansas, was told that he could either “resign or be fired” from his job after refusing to give into a Trump Administration demand to hand over a museum sword that the president wished to deliver as a gift to Great Britain’s King Charles III.
Arrington was pressured to resign Thursday, according to multiple news outlets.
Presidential libraries are administered by the National Archives and Records Administration. The Presidential Records Act of 1978 makes it illegal to use artifacts given to presidential libraries as gifts.
“They asked for a sword,” Arrington told the Kansas News Service in a recent interview, “and we said, ‘Well, we do have swords, but we can’t give them away because they’re museum artifacts.'”
The requested sword had been given to Eisenhower in 1947 by Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands.
Arrington reportedly had worked with officials and the U.S. State Department to come up with an alternative gift – a replica of an Eisenhower sword from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point – for the president to present to the king while visiting Great Britain in September.
Arrington told news outlets that he had heard no complaints regarding the gift or the fact that the law had prevented him from handing over a museum artifact. Then, on Monday evening, Arrington said, he was contacted by a supervisor who told Arrington that he was being asked to resign, or be fired, because he “could no longer be trusted with confidential information.”
“I was obviously shocked and saddened and heartbroken, “Arrington said. “I have almost 30 years of government service. I’ve never had a bad mark against me.”
