  2. one more ‘toon for today even tho’ it ran last week in david horsey’s op ed in seattle times

A compelling argument can be made that former President Donald Trump is the most abominable candidate for the American presidency in history. Strangely, that is exactly why he crushed his opponents in the Iowa caucuses and is far and away the likely Republican nominee for the White House.
A majority of Republican voters favor the abominable. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was running neck and neck with Trump a few months ago, then the twice-impeached ex-president started racking up indictments in various federal and state courts. Rather than being repulsed by Trump’s alleged criminality, Republican voters rallied to his side. Now, he is turning his frequent court appearances into campaign events and the tactic seems to be working in his favor.
In Iowa on Monday, Trump’s troops marched through life-threatening temperatures to attend caucus gatherings and support their leader. The result was that Trump won more than 50% of the vote, besting DeSantis by 30% and leaving former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley even further behind.
Next Tuesday, voters in New Hampshire will have their turn and Haley is supposed to fare better. Yet, short of a sweeping victory for Haley, the nomination race is unlikely to be altered. The way things now stand, there are very few states beyond New Hampshire where Trump will not dominate. The near-religious fervor of his supporters will not be diminished, and that fervent base makes up a majority of Republican voters almost everywhere.
Haley’s dilemma is that she is seeking the nomination of a party that no longer exists. The GOP is now a rural and working-class party where sensible policies and competent administration do not even raise a blip on the radar of voter concerns. Anger, resentment, conspiracy theories, culture wars, fears of the “deep state” and quasi-religious impulses are the factors motivating most Republican voters.
They do not want conservative government, they want the system to be blown apart and, for that, the abominable man is the perfect candidate.

President Joe Biden on Monday marked record-high stock market numbers with a dig at Donald Trump.
Just before the 2020 election, Trump predicted a Biden win would lead to “a stock market collapse the likes of which you’ve never had.”
Biden tweeted a clip of Trump’s prediction alongside a separate clip from Fox News on Monday announcing record closes for both the Dow and the S&P 500.

  4. Trump Describes Missile Defense: ‘Ding, Ding, Ding, Boom, Whoosh!’ (rollingstone.com)

Donald Trump returned to New Hampshire on Monday evening, once again hellbent on flexing his ability to identify shapes and sounds.
After bragging last week that he “aced” his cognitive test after correctly naming a giraffe, tiger, and whale, the former president spoke to a crowd of supporters in Laconia, New Hampshire – his last rally before the state’s Republican primary.
Amid a disjointed rant referencing the scrapped Reagan administration’s Strategic Defense Initiative that was popularly known as “Star Wars,” Trump began to describe his own supposed plans for a U.S. missile defense system.

“Don’t be surprised if you have someone that is 80 in office, their mental stability is going to continue to decline. That’s just human nature,” Haley said Sunday on Face the Nation. (Trump is 77 years-old and would be 78 on inauguration day 2025). She continued, “I don’t know if he was confused, I don’t know what happened, but it’s enough to send us a warning sign.”

  8. The Atlantic: The Party of Malice

Donald Trump has made the Republican Party cruel, xenophobic, exclusionary, and bigoted. Since the first day Trump stepped on the presidential stage, and in some cases since long before then, he has stoked grievances, resentments, and fears. He has targeted Mexicans; Muslim and Syrian refugees; Haitians, Salvadorans, and Africans; and Black Americans, including the Central Park Five and the Black prosecutors who have filed charges against him.

“When it comes to race, Mr. Trump plays with fire like no other president in a century,” the New York Times reporter Peter Baker wrote in 2019. “While others who occupied the White House at times skirted close to or even over the line, finding ways to appeal to the resentments of white Americans with subtle and not-so-subtle appeals, none of them in modern times fanned the flames as overtly, relentlessly and even eagerly as Mr. Trump.”

  9. Trump Is Bleeding Moderate Support

No matter what happens in New Hampshire, there’s a whole swath of the Republican electorate and a good chunk of independents who appear firmly committed to not voting for him in November if he becomes the nominee.

“I can’t vote for Trump. He’s a crook. He’s too corrupt,” said Scott Simeone, 64, an independent voter from Amherst, who backed Trump in 2016 and 2020. “I voted for him, and I didn’t realize he’s as corrupt as he is.”

“I liked him. But he just scares me now. Everybody that has ever worked for him is not any more,” said Lisa Tracy, of Salem. If it came down to Biden versus Trump, she said, “I would go with Biden.”

“I can’t find anything good to say and I try,” said Curtis Thornbrugh, 81, an independent from Rindge. “He’s dangerous and the people around him are, too.”

  10. zelenskyy turns the tables according to newsweek via msn:

Ukraine will put in place new measures to safeguard the “national identity of Ukrainians” living in Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday, hitting at the heart of Moscow and Kyiv’s competing claims on identity and territory.
The Ukrainian leader said on Monday that he had signed a decree, “On the Territories of the Russian Federation Historically Inhabited by Ukrainians,” which he said would see the “restoration of truth about the historical past” of Ukraine.
The decree lists several regions of Russia as “historically inhabited by Ukrainians,” including the border regions of Bryansk, Kursk and Belgorod, and Russia’s southern Krasnodar region, from which Moscow has launched attacks on Ukraine and which is linked to the annexed Crimean peninsula via the key Kerch Bridge.
“We must take steps not only to strengthen the unity of Ukraine and our people, but also to act for the unity of rights and freedoms, the truth about Ukrainians, the truth about us, and the truth about our history,” Zelensky said in an address.
Ukrainian officials will develop a “plan for preserving the national identity of Ukrainians in the Russian Federation, including in lands historically inhabited by them,” Zelensky said.
    […]
Zelensky’s announcement, coinciding with Ukraine’s Day of Unity, is “about calling attention to the past and present of Moscow’s chauvinistic and punitive treatment of Ukrainians who wish to preserve their culture and language in Russia,” particularly in areas where Ukrainians have historically made up a significant part of the population, he argued.
Zelensky said on Monday that the new “plan” will include collecting testimonies about crimes committed against ethnic Ukrainians, political repression, deportation, and “forced Russification.”
Kyiv will “conduct events aimed at debunking Russian myths about Ukraine,” and schools will teach the “true history of ethnic Ukrainians in the lands historically inhabited by them within the borders of the Russian Federation,” he said.
The Ukrainian leader also announced draft legislation proposing that “all ethnic Ukrainians and their descendants from around the world” would have access to dual Ukrainian citizenship, apart from those with Russian citizenship.

“So you know, it’s all about the voter turnout,” Sununu said on CNN’s “The Lead.” “It’s all about the enthusiasm, where’s the energy. Not just what people say on a phone or how they you know, respond to an online text or something.”
“It’s really about the energy of that campaign. Trump has no energy — the guy can barely read a teleprompter right now. All the wind is behind … Nikki’s sails. So I just think the sky’s the limit,” Sununu added.

  21. renee, what really is the law there about campaigning near voting sites?  how close can vote solicitors be and are political paraphernalia such as Tee shirts/placards/speechifiers etc. allowed within the polls?

is this article from the mirror right?

Trump and Haley ‘break the law’ as they greet voters at NH primary polling stations (msn.com)

Former president Donald Trump and former governor Nikki Haley appeared to blatantly break the law as they casually strolled up to the crowded New Hampshire polling stations amid the primary, irate voters said on social media.
The Republican presidential front-runner was accompanied by Majorie Taylor Green, Republican representative of Georgia. Users on X, formerly Twitter, were outraged saying Trump was violating voting laws, specifically the act of electioneering. The term denotes any act intended to wrongfully influence the vote of a voter on any question or office, according to the New Hampshire Municipal Association.
Under the law, all candidates for office, including persons working on behalf of said candidate, are prohibited from posting, distributing any campaign materials within voting stations. Additionally, candidates should never perform any electioneering activities that could compromise the safety and wellbeing of voters within 10 foot distance of the polling station entrance. The former president is recorded yelling “don’t waste your time. Get in and vote” to the crowd. The Republican front-runner was welcomed by an exuberant crowd with one saying they missed work to be grace by Trump’s presence.
“Isn’t there a law about electioneering at polling stations in New Hampshire,” said user David Badash. The sentiment was shared by another user, who pondered: “Could this be considered voter intimidation? I mean what they’re laws about how close they can get to people at a voting facility?”
The accusations are mirrored on the other side, as X users claim Nikki Haley is also violating electioneering laws by appearing at polling stations with Granite State Governor Chris Sununu. The New Hampshire incumbent formally endorsed Haley last month saying she “is the candidate with the momentum to win and get our party back on track to delivering conservative victories across the country. She’s answered our questions and built trust.” Haley and the governor are seen on X, blissfully interacting with supporters.
It is unclear whether Trump’s visit was scheduled or impromptu. A news anchor for ABC reported that the attorney general’s office said it was receiving an influx of calls complaining about electioneering in New Hampshire. Another user named Roger Gorden said supporters were putting campaign logos on water bottles and handing them out to voters waiting on line.
“It’s a violation of “electioneering laws,” the user wrote. “Trump is certainly violating that law if it exists but then again he doesn’t follow any laws in our country cuz he’s running to be a dictator,” claimed another. This comes about a week after Trump scored an important victory in the Iowa caucuses.

  22. Are electioneering laws by state?  I’ll have to Google that.

That would bring indictments to 92 for tRUMPsky and one for Hayley.

I wore a Clinton/Gore tee for Halloween and went to early vote.  Thankfully, I had a hoody I could zip up when I was called out.   I always see campaign tables outside in the parking lot of my polling place, but not near the doors.

  23. The DC Circuit Court of Appeals declines to rehear Donald Trump’s appeal of the limited gag order that was entered by Judge Chutkan in his DC election interference case. Trump sought rehearing before the entire appellate court bench. Notably not a single judge said “yes.”

  24. restriction on political activities near polling places when voting is taking place

i always say something i regret later to those people 😒

  25. Sometimes going off the yellow brick road is fun.  I will present a wild and absolutely nutty thought.

It appears that the former guy is leaving his carefully constructed alternate universe and rapidly descending into another place that only exists in the screwed up brain of his.  So, our first level is where we are today.  He is not only as nasty as the four year old child he is, but now he is seeing wild and weird alternatives to the past, current and deeper.  Somehow Desert Storm was in Vietnam according to his ranting yesterday.

We now have a maga party candidate that is supposed to win the greedy old perverts presidential nomination.  It does not matter to the voters that a criminal is who they want to represent them.  So this guy is essentially out of his mind.  He is not spewing garbage.  What if he is so far gone that he starts yakking about secrets?  He could say things that do not make sense if you do not know what he is saying, but the words that sound like garbage actually do have a real background.

What if you are the handler from a foreign country of your agent in the United States who has started saying words that might connect him and the foreign country?  Now you are facing a big dilemma, you have your handler on you about reining in your agent.  Get him to stop talking.  Now you are in a squeeze.  A presidential candidate needs to be restrained, but due to his life as a petulant four year old he is uncontrollable.  Okay.  Someone from the Motherland he likes comes to have a “tea” and leaves rapidly.  Now old sfb succumbs to bad “tea”.

A complete non-American action.  It is to stop any talk of connections to Moscow and of providing the KGB with important secrets (many US agents have disappeared after someone has been caught talking to KGB).  It is to stop a lunatic from ranting about things you do not want put in public.  It has been said that sometimes people who outlive their usefulness commit suicide by falling out of windows, and other means.  (lots of examples)

So, there is an alternative way to bring the 2024 election march to a halt.

  26. Trump victory speech. What is he talking about here???

“Just a little note to Nikki, she’s not going to win. But if she did, she would be under investigation in 15 minutes, and I could tell you five reasons why already. Not big reasons, little stuff that she doesn’t want to talk about, that she will be under investigation within minutes, and so would Ron have been, but he decided to get out.”

  27. It doesn’t matter if it’s true it not. Just repeat the lie until it seems like there must be some there there.

    https://www.reuters.com/fact-check/claims-nikki-haleys-staffer-was-arrested-are-false-2024-01-23/

“The U.S. Army’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) did not arrest a member of Republican presidential contender Nikki Haley’s staff for bribing voters ahead of the Iowa caucus. The claim can be traced to a website that identifies its content as satirical.”

“Reuters has previously addressed Real Raw News articles that made false claims about the CID, opens new tab and elections, opens new tab.
“The website describes itself at the bottom of the article page as exploring “content often ignored by mainstream media.” A disclaimer on the site’s “About Us”, opens new tab page says the content includes “humor, parody, and satire” but then describes that disclaimer as “for our protection, on the advice on legal counsel” and as a response to fact-checkers.”

The whole JK thing is so lame; they are poisoning the well to help Orange Adolf.

Anyway, with this nonsense and the birther lie makes two things to be investigated according to the goings on in his syphilitic brain.

Ooor, maybe he confused his own wrongdoings and said Nikki’s name accidentally like he confused her with Nancy Pelosi.

  28. Ivy – When they interview MAGAts and they say SFB will fight for them…the disconnect with reality is astounding.

  29. BID, they have a duty as citizens and voters to educate themselves beyond media propaganda and they’re not doing it.
