  1. Wiki:

The New-England Boy’s Song about Thanksgiving Day“, also known as “Over the River and Through the Woods“, is a Thanksgiving poem by Lydia Maria Child, originally published in 1844 in Flowers for Children, Volume 2.

Although many people sing “to grandmother’s house we go”, the author’s original words were “to grandfather’s house we go”. Moreover, in modern American English, most people use the word woods rather than wood in reference to a forest, and sing the song accordingly.

The poem was originally published as “The New-England Boy’s Song about Thanksgiving Day” in Child’s Flowers for Children. It celebrates the author’s childhood memories of visiting her grandfather’s house (said to be the Paul Curtis House). Lydia Maria Child was a novelist, journalist, teacher, and poet who wrote extensively about the need to eliminate slavery.

The poem was eventually set to a tune by an unknown composer. The song version is sometimes presented with lines about Christmas, rather than Thanksgiving. For instance, the line “Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day!” becomes “Hurrah for Christmas Day!” As a Christmas song, it has been recorded as “A Merry Christmas at Grandmother’s”. Although the modern Thanksgiving holiday is not always associated with snow (snow in late November occasionally occurs in the northern states and is rare at best elsewhere in the United States), New England in the early 19th century was enduring the Little Ice Age, a colder era with earlier winters.

The original piece had twelve stanzas, though only four are typically included in the song.

[for BiD a little aside also from wiki: A children’s book, Over the River—A Turkey’s Tale, recasts the poem as a humorous tale of a family of turkeys on their way to a vegetarian Thanksgiving; the book was written by Derek Anderson, and published by Simon & Schuster in 2005.]

  2. nightmare memories of thanksgivings past

Thanksgiving Stereotypes… Love ‘em or hate ‘em, we all know ‘em!

  3. another globally political thing in the news to be thankful for:

Ukraine: EU Parliament Declares Russia ‘State Sponsor of Terrorism’ (businessinsider.com)

The parliament, which is the legislature for the European Union, said in a Wednesday statement that “Following the atrocities carried out by [Russian President] Vladimir Putin’s regime against Ukrainian civilians, MEPs have recognised Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism.”
“MEPs highlight that the deliberate attacks and atrocities committed by Russian forces and their proxies against civilians in Ukraine, the destruction of civilian infrastructure and other serious violations of international and humanitarian law amount to acts of terror and constitute war crimes.”
It said in a statement before the vote that the move would aid efforts for Putin to face a war crimes trial.
“By declaring Russia a state sponsor of terrorism, MEPs want to prepare the ground for Putin and his government to be held accountable for these crimes before an international tribunal.”

“The Biden administration has approved plans to build the nation’s largest oil export terminal off the Gulf Coast of Texas, which would add 2 million barrels per day to the U.S. oil export capacity.”

“Earthworks, an environmental nonprofit, spotted the filing and publicized approval of the Sea Port Oil Terminal on Tuesday.”

“Last week, they were in Egypt telling the world that now is the time for climate action. This week, they’re locking us into a climate-wrecking monstrosity for at least a generation,” said Jeffrey Jacoby, deputy director of Texas Campaign for the Environment.

I think POTUS Joe just ensured a Dem and/or third-party challenger in 2024.

It’s a rainy, foggy day here. A nice day for napping on indigenous lands. I’m not sure I’m even making potatoes. Saltines and ginger ale between naps sounds better.

  5. The “deputy director” of that nonsense organization has travel pics of himself globetrotting all over the world on his social media.  Did he walk to Chichen Itza or burn fossil fuels?

  6. What are we thanking on Thanksgiving Day?  Vaccines and anti-viral meds.  On Day 5 of COVID isolation I am so happy that smart people invented and developed vaccines and other medications to prevent, slow down, stop and destroy nasty viruses and bacteria.  I am thankful for science.

The anti-viral meds, Paxlovid, work.  I felt very good after the first day of them, and much stronger after the second day, today is day three.  The mucking of taste is true, but, I will live with that as it is not permanent.

  7. i’m NOT thankful for a conservative-majority SCOTUS that thought it was REALLY fucking important for every maladjusted weirdo in this country to have access to guns.  Like, even before abortion, they just HAD to make sure that happened.  Fuck them.

    Happy Thanksgiving

  8. Pardon me.  i’m a big fan of my local Walmart because everyone that works there is incredibly nice and hard-working, salt-of-the-earth type people, so the news of the day might as well be about them, and none of them, or you, or anyone else, deserve to be subjected to violence while they work underpaid jobs just to make rent.

i’m preaching to the choir, i realize, and i sincerely hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving ✌️

The United States is now at one of those historic forks in the road whose outcome will prove as fateful as those of the 1860s, the 1930s, and the 1960s,” writes MacLean. “To value liberty for the wealthy minority above all else and enshrine it in the nation’s governing rules, as Calhoun and Buchanan both called for and the Koch network is achieving, play by play, is to consent to an oligarchy in all but the outer husk of representative form.”
Nobody can say we weren’t warned.

  10. https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/24/politics/e-jean-carroll-trump-battery-defamation-lawsuit/index.html

“Ex-magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll sued former President Donald Trump for battery and defamation under a new New York law that allows adults alleging sexual assault to bring claims years after the attack.”

“Carroll filed the lawsuit Thursday, the first day that civil lawsuits can be brought under the new law, the Adult Survivors Act, which gives adults a one-year window to file a claim.”

“The lawsuit is the second Carroll has brought against Trump, but the first to seek to hold him accountable for battery for allegedly raping Carroll in the dressing room of a New York department store in the mid-1990s. The lawsuit also alleges a new defamation claim based on statements Trump made last month.”

~Happy Thanksgiving~ to the orange dumbass in Florida (not to be confused with the dumbass who resides in Florida’s goober’s mansion). I hope E. Jean wins and it opens the way for others. There are others.

  11. Jamie, brandy sounds like a great addition to the sweet potato casserole. If I have any I may try that today. – Decided to try rum in it – Cruzan black strap.
And I thought I’d seen it all until I saw Ziggy Marley singing in front of Macy’s while giant ballon’s approached

  12. Hey… Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Rick and I were suppose to go with family members out to a local restaurant that puts on a magnificent buffet every Thanksgiving and Easter.  We are staying put… but I did double mask and go grocery shopping.  We have a 5lb chicken and all the fixings.

Last night was the first night we both slept through without coughing.  We are on the mend.  BlueB… glad you’re feeling better.

    and yes… it’s football day… baby!

Listening to my sister, the walmart worker, vent the other day (I have 6 sisters btw) It has been an unusually stressful month and worse,  the season is just started. I suspect that is true through out the industry.  Lately, I’ve been doing my smiling old man act with every retail worker I encounter, trying not to be a pia and trying to make it a pleasanter day for them.

  14. I’m making Tangerine Turkey, my latest kitchen experiment. Shavings on top, peeled tangerines in the cavity and sage seasoned butter pushed under the skin. All after 24 hours of brining. This is one tortured bird.

  15. The recipes all sound great…..my latest culinary challenge is how to make perfect hashbrowns…..shredded, not chopped; like at the Waffle House.  I’m almost there.

  16. same here about the hash browns.  i gave up trying the complete scratch thing.  bought the ore-ida’s frozen raw shredded hashbrown package and experimented with different flavorings and cooking styles.  not having to shred them and dunk/rinse/squeeze was a good start.

  17. https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/24/media/coindesk-scoop-ftx-reliable-sources/index.html

“The staggering level of apparent deception staged by former crypto king Sam Bankman-Fried wasn’t uncovered by government investigators or a major powerhouse financial news organization, such as The Wall Street Journal.”

“Instead, the public’s first glimpse of the alleged wrongdoing by Bankman-Fried — known to insiders as SBF — came earlier this month from a small news site unknown to much of the public that has spent years chronicling the turbulent and murky world of crypto: CoinDesk.”

“We dropped the story and in a week and two days they are bankrupt and this leading figure in crypto has fallen.”

  18. https://www.marketwatch.com/story/ftx-collapse-should-be-wake-up-call-for-tougher-crypto-rules-elizabeth-warren-says-11669148192

“The collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX should be a “wake-up call” that prompts tougher enforcement of existing laws and spurs Congress to plug holes in regulations for crypto, Sen. Elizabeth Warren wrote in an op-ed Tuesday.”

“Warren wrote that if FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried or other executives committed fraud, “then federal prosecutors should send them to prison.”

“But she also called on the Securities and Exchange Commission to take a harder line on crypto, saying the agency “has fallen far behind as the crypto industry has drawn in millions of new investors.” Warren wrote that Congress should give the SEC, along with the Justice and Treasury departments, more funding.”

  19. prep them, boil them, drain them, skillet them, don’t crowd the pan

can nuke instead of boil but not as good- you’re creating more starch surface area to brown while avoiding overcooking and burning them in an attempt to cook-through

  20. There’s a difference between frying pre-cooked potatoes (= cottage fries) and pan frying raw potatoes.  Lots of room in the pan and lots of patience.

  21. In frying potatoes remember the lid and don’t turn until thoroughly browned on the bottom.  Turn too soon without a lid and you get mush.

  22. Something to be considered and hopefully does not cause turkey snort out the nose.  Just saw another stupid remark by SFB.  I suppose it is the day, but I immediately thought of SFB and the football brain carpetbagger have some type of tag team presser.  The sound bites would be tremendous.

Happy turkey day.  And better health to all fighting the virus right now.

  23. Shit for brains posted on truth social:    “Give me freedom or give me Death”
    Keith Olbermann tweeted:  “Deal”.

  24. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11466021/Kanye-West-spotted-white-nationalist-Holocaust-denier-Nick-Fuentes-Trumps-Mar-Lago.html

“Kanye West is spotted with white nationalist and Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes at Miami airport before heading to Mar-a-Lago to have dinner with Donald Trump”

I guess Ye & Nick bonded over anti-semitism and then went to have Thanksgiving with…were JarJar and Ivanker there?

Is Orange Adolf just trying to keep Ye from running against him?

Are Ye and Kari Lake gonna duke it out for veep?

  25. My money is on T****/Lake. Ye ain’ gon’ draw in middle class suburban voters and PA has been swung by middle class suburban voters twice in the last 2 presidential elections – or at least it seemed that way to me.

  26. https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/24/opinions/trump-tax-returns-mccaffery/index.html

“So now what? Congress should get the returns within days, if they do not already have them. But the Democratic majority in the House has just a few weeks to do anything on their own. They could, legally, publish Trump’s returns. But this would seem hasty and vindictive, at a time when Democrats are hoping against hope to avoid hasty and vindictive investigations from the incoming Republican House.”

    BS! Just publish it!

“The Manhattan DA’s case has argued that the Trump Organization engaged in clear and rather obvious tax fraud, as by paying executives like Allen Weisselberg in untaxed, unreported forms, such as through private school tuition payments for his grandchildren. All of this is consistent with decades of Trump family aggressive tax avoidance, stretching back to the 45th president’s father, Fred, in the 1940s. The Trump Organization has routinely dismissed these allegations saying they are all part of a “witch hunt” by the Democrats.

“But if nothing were done with Trump’s tax returns, it would be an opportunity lost. The whole saga cries out for reform. In arguing for access, the House Ways and Means Committee relied heavily on its roles in overseeing the executive branch’s administration of the tax laws and on its legislative responsibilities. Both are joined today, as there are – or should be – pressing questions about what the administrators are doing, and what new laws are needed.”
