  1. Old devil time, I’m gonna fool you now
Old devil time, you’d like to bring me down

No storm nor fire can ever beat us down
No wind that blows but carries us further on
And you who fear, oh lovers gather round
And we will rise to sing it one more time

Here is a musical memory from 1983 (1984?) at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, where I got to sing Pete Seeger’s beautiful song Old Devil Time on the Main Stage. .what an experience! What a song! I just sang it last week. It is a timeless and timely work of art.

  2. McCarthy sidesteps endorsing Trump

Asked by NBC “Meet the Press” anchor Kristen Welker why he has not yet endorsed Trump, McCarthy said, “The campaign is still going. There’s a very good chance I would endorse President Trump.”

McCarthy has endorsed Tom Emmer for Speaker after it was reported Trump opposes him. Has Kevin left the Pumpkin Patch?

  3. Ivy, thanks for the Vestavia area restaurant info = passing along to my sis to reconnoiter.

I really don’t know bupkis about the RW nuts trying to become speaker.  What I do know is that if the contenders try to let Dumbass direct who should become speaker there won’t be one unless either Dems choose one and have an opportunity to vote on that person or some pissed off Repugs vote for Jeffries., and no, I don’t see that happening.

  4. Here is the question.
Why are republicans all so driven to be such dickheads?   Money a big part, sure, but they’re even dickheads when there is actually no monies involved.

    Why?

  5. For something different just in case you read or hear about this- something unconfirmed and possibly just a KGB attempt to play telephone.  there is a single post on a favorite russian social media that puttie had a heart attack Saturday night.  There is no confirmation.  Is this real? I do not know. It is possible, the guy is not healthy and he just returned from some travel. Is it false, most likely.  I suspect vodka was involved and not much in puttie.

Or, it could have been one of his doubles having a heart attack.  He does have a lot of them and it would make sense to have a couple showing up around his bunker to distract from his real movelments.

In response to the charge of corrupting the youth, Socrates points out that young, wealthy men of Athens follow him around of their volition. They find great joy and entertainment in watching Socrates utilize his trademark method of interlocution and interrogation to expose prominent older men’s ignorance. The young men also emulate Socrates, interrogating older elites themselves. Although Socrates views this as a public service, he points out, “The result is that those whom they question are angry, not with themselves but with me”

  7. Sigh – again.  Reading the news from Michigan State University (not the picture thing) a retired prof is described about his research and retirement things.  Name is familiar, tada, I was in his senior level plant pathology course.  Reading further and looking at the picture proves I am incorrect, it is about the son of the prof.  Sigh.

I was talking to a neighbor yesterday, He looks almost as old as I do(imo) from  a lot of hard living. His ex was from my home town, a daughter of someone I went to school with. As I remember she dropped out of school because she got pregnant and in those days they wouldn’t let a pregnant girl go to school. Her child would be in her 50’s now.
    Oh well
to quote John Prine “Those years just flow by like a broken down dam”
    Jack

  9. BB, this getting old stuff just sucks.  I wish I thought I could count wisdom, but that’s iffy, too, isn’t it?

  10. Getting old is just the cost of doing business.  Tote that barge, lift that bale……Pay the freight or it’s off to jail
And a tidy measure of luck of the draw.

  11. Saw that very John Prine here at the Alys Stephens. Gob smackingly awesome. Mr. Ivy’s band plays that tune.

  12. I keep hearing the folks here saying how “strong” Don the Turnip is, how we wouldn’t be in this mess we got now if the strong guy was in there. It’s bull. Donald Turnip was the weakest and dumbest president we’ve ever had. He might as well have been under the desk in John-John’s little cubby hole.

  13. Trump in his Derry NH speech just now really upped the ante on baseless fear mongering, said Biden wants to bring the “sickness and depravity” of people chanting “death to America” to the United States. Said a vote for Joe Biden is a vote to “turn the United States into a hotbed of jihadists and make our cities into dumping grounds very much resembling the Gaza Strip.”

  14. He’s just mad he can’t use this chance to grift more money for himself out of the Middle East…

Trump: “Joe Biden’s speech was a grotesque betrayal of Israel and a confused mess of neocon war mongering and America Last lunacy…pushing conflict abroad and distracting from his many disasters at home”

Angel from Montgomery was on John’s first album released in 1971 when John was 25. Mind boggling the empathy and insight of the songs on that album. Hello in there, Sam Stone, Paradise, and that ain’t all. The rest of the album had songs just as good.

  16. John’s remarkable first album and then his last “the tree of forgiveness” what a set of bookends for a life.

    Jack

  17. Jack, thanks for those. I was a late-comer to John Prine and still learning. I can say he had an awesome stage presence. As with our John Prine seats, when we get concert tickets, they’re the closest-up and most center-stage we can get. I want to feel and see as if I was on the stage.

  18. Even Emmer was a tRUMPer, despite finally certifying election results.   It sounds like tRUMPsky/Putin will be jerking the chain no matter which Repug is elected SOTH.

Looking for a few, good and brave Republicans to vote for Hakeem Jeffries and save our democracy.

  19. DNC to project ‘GOP Clown Show’ display near Capitol on Monday night | The Hill

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) will project a display near the U.S. Capitol on Monday night to bash House Republicans for going 20 days without a Speaker of the House.

The graphic will project on the National Gallery of Art East Building at 8 p.m. and aims to call out “the chaotic House Republicans for dragging on their clown show instead of delivering for the American people,” the DNC first told The Hill.

The building is located near the Capitol, facing Pennsylvania Avenue NW between 4th and 3rd Streets.

  20. https://www.cnn.com/2023/10/23/politics/trump-rnc-relationship/index.html

“Former President Donald Trump’s decision to skip next month’s third GOP presidential primary debate and instead hold a rivaling rally just up the road…”

“RNC officials and members pushed back at the idea that they would not hold the debate just because Trump is leading in the polls.”

“The reality is 50% of the base is with him – that means there’s another 50% that’s not,” the Republican operative said. “That 50% has to feel like there’s a fair process that played out if they’re going to turn out if Trump is nominated and actually vote for him.”
