Tim Walz, Trump’s comments Thursday gave Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign ammunition for a counterattack.
“Donald Trump knows nothing about service to anyone or anything but himself,” Harris campaign senior spokesperson Sarafina Chitika said Friday in a statement. “For him to insult Medal of Honor recipients, just as he has previously attacked Gold Star families, mocked prisoners of war, and referred to those who lost their lives in service to our country as ‘suckers’ and ‘losers,’ should remind all Americans that we owe it to our service members, our country, and our future to make sure Donald Trump is never our nation’s commander in chief again.”

It took me 9 years after returning from Viet Nam to join the VFW , then my friend Bert Wolfe, a WWI veteran who served in France keeping trains on the tracks, took me to his home post in Bellevue, Ohio for drinks and conversation. Bert was a firebrand leftie who had seen Eugene V. Debs and knew Big Bill Haywood in Bert’s Chicago days. Bert was 88 years old in 1980, and he explained the VFW had many hardcore right wing zealots who actually tried to ban Bert from joining the VFW, as Bert was a letter-to-the-editor writer who criticized certain USA military commitments. Bert told them to stick it; he was a bona fide war veteran and be was joining the VFW because he had earned that distinction. And so, I took that attitude and joined my local VFW 44 years ago. Bert passed away in 1981 at age 89. I keep my membership even though I no longer drink and argue politics at the local VFW canteen. I keep my membership because I earned it. I approve Commander Lipphardt’s press release with a salute—to him, and to my long-gone drinking buddy, Bert Wolfe.
Never joined one but have played music in a bunch of ‘em. VFW. DAV. American Legion, and such. Always enjoyed talking with the peeps, but was never much of a a club-joiner. I gues my onliest club is the AFofM local #257.
