The GOP’s Puerto Rican Incentive

If humanitarian reasons don’t make the case, Republicans might want to consider that making Puerto Rico a pleasant place to stay in and live in is in their best political interest.

Already the dramatic influx of these Democratic leaning voters has changed the politics of Central Florida and elsewhere. Statewide their political clout grows monthly.

Give them more reason to flee their island and Florida could one day soon have a Democratic governor again, and tip the balance away from Republicans in the Electoral College.

  1. Political considerations aside, and not being naĆÆve about the fact that humanitarian considerations are not at the top of the army’s list, why in gods name doesn’t the US Army have boatloads of vehicles and water and power specialists invading Puerto Rico? Ā I certainly hope that’s their focus right now. We certainly know that’s what Puerto Rico needs.

  2. So I’m watching morning Joe this morning listening to the different topics that they’re discussing, and I’m wondering whether the biggest newest trump/Republican scam is the tax plan or Tom Price paying $51,000 to pay for $1 million in travel on private and military jets. It’s really just so hard to determine what the biggest scam is in this White House and this Congress.

  3. Off topic but today is the fiftieth anniversary of The Prisoner TV series. I was a wee one but was fascinated by Rover & the pennyfarthing. Maybe never really discovering the whole kit ‘n kaboodle Ā but seeking is part of the magic. Or maybe it was simply a damn fine bit of television. Funny how little snippets stay with you.

    I am not a number ….

*On a related note, still have a 45 of Secret Agent Man. Cool.

  4. pogo, all that price travel has taken some of the focus away fromĀ  the twit’s excessive expenditures for his own and his family’s travel.Ā  price stuff chump change comparatively speaking.

  5. mediaite:Ā Art of the Deal Writer Tony Schwartz: By Now ā€˜John Kelly Knows… Trump is Deeply Disturbed’

Appearing on AC360, Schwartz said that after two months as Chief of Staff, Gen. John Kelly, at this point, has a pretty good idea what Trump is all about.

ā€œI do believe John Kelly knows clearly that Trump is deeply disturbed and he is utterly untrustworthy,ā€ Schwartz said. ā€œAnd he is managing him all the time out of some belief — put aside ideology — that it’s better that he be there than he not be there. I never met anybody who worked for Trump who didn’t know who Trump was within a very short time.ā€

Earlier in the segment, Schwartz weighed in on Trump’s mental fitness — or, in Schwartz’s opinion, the President’s lack thereof.

ā€œIs Trump crazy like a fox or is he just crazy?ā€ Schwartz said. ā€œAnd I think the overwhelming weight of evidence suggests that he’s just crazy. And not… casual crazy. I’m talking about crazy — I’m not a psychiatrist so I actually can get away with saying this — but crazy as a personality disorder.ā€

  6. re Puerto rico, what gets me on the slow response tragedy is that cuba offered to send doctors and med supplies days and days ago.Ā  our hospital ship “comfort” is just now enroute and will take time to travel the 1000 miles whereas cuba is so much closer…. people died and will die that needn’t.

  7. Trump’s travel is ridiculous, but expected. Ā I don’t know the details about the family’s wanderings – whether they are Ā typically with him or what, so I can’t comment on that. Ā I’ll probably be off the grid for most of the day. Ā You kids keep the bus between the lines.

  8. Well let’s face it… Ā  it’s not “because it’s the right thing to do” that will motivate the “Christian, family loving, what would Jesus do” GOP righties. Ā But the thought of Florida turning blue most certainly will motivate them…. Ā  putzes!

  9. Trump is crazy…..and has Alzheimer’s

All I know about the Hef was once upon a time when I really wanted to see nekkid wimmen he made it possible…..before I ever got to see a real live one, I mean……national Geographic just didnt cut it…..

After a time I outgrew that desire, but still read the stories and interviews which remained top-notch…..I might have still caught a glimpse here and there by accident, but what the hell, ya gotta take the bitter with the badder. (Lum and Abner)

  10. The in-depth responders for domestic (including the territories) mega-disasters are the various state (national) guard organization. They have the heavy equipment, etc., required to provide meaningful response. The folks in the guard units are familiar with the terrain and the missions they will likely encounter. There are inter-state agreements where neighboring states will lend support. These units are not operating under federal control. Command and Control is what makes these organizations perform the miracles of which they are capable; unfortunately Lieutenants General HonoreĀ  are few and far apart.

  11. Hey, why stop at Florida, take over Georgia too.

I heard PR’s governor say ifĀ  the federal government doesn’t help PR then there will be a mass exodus to the main land.

I can see Trump land freaking out,

Danger ,dangerĀ  the Puerto Ricans are coming!!!

  12. Humm, maybe we need to find housing for hurricane victims in Georgia , just temporary mind you, in Republican districts……….

  13. There is a lot to be said for commonality of experience.Ā  I arrive late, read SJWNY reminiscing about “Prisoner” and think to myself, must get the opening sequence.Ā  Go down a bit farther to see Patd has beat me to it.Ā  So you all will just have to settle for being absorbed by “Rover”

  14. I know the military stages all sorts ofĀ  “war games” for supposedly any attack event.Ā  Why is there not anything similar for natural disasters with all the red tape cleared way before hand requiring only a governor’s request to activate. The response has been horrendous.

I seem to remember a little thing called the Berlin Airlift that managed to keep people fed with airdrops, landings, and distribution.Ā  Why weren’t the Seabees ready to go to build roads and bridges immediately?Ā  Why wasn’t the Comfort being readied BEFORE the hurricanes hit.

  15. Yes, w/250,000 PR refugees/voters we can turn FL from purple to Blue !

W/1.0M!LL!ON PR refugee/voters we can turn GA from red to Blue !

  16. Tom Price a man who engaged in stock manipulation….why is anyone surprised that he isĀ  pig giant pig at the public troughĀ  Ā why would he be different than anyone else in the PG administration

  17. 2 stories to remind the religious rightsters of how worldly their worldly lord was and is.

    (1) from wapo:

The racy Playboy magazine cover featuring the circa-1990 version of Donald Trump graced the billionaire’s New York office for years — right next to awards from religious groups and clippings from other magazines that didn’t feature naked pictorials.

The cover and the extensive interview inside the March 1990 edition were a feather in Trump’s cap, placing him in elite company with other political and entertainment luminaries spotlighted by the magazine.

In the famous Playboy cover photo, Trump isĀ wearing tuxedo pants, a cummerbund and a bow tie.

But Playmate Brandi Brandt has donned his jacket — and nothing else.

ā€œI was one of the few men in the history of Playboy to be on the cover,ā€ he boasted to a Washington Post reporter taking a tour of his office during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Trump embraced the association:Ā During his bid for the presidency, he was known to autograph copies of the magazine, offering a quick scrawl during campaign stops.

Trump continued his relationship with Playboy over the years.

In 1993, the magazine invited him to be a guest photographer and interviewer in a nationwide Playmate search. Seven years later, Trump made a cameo in an explicit Playboy video, which featured nude women in sexual positions.

    (2) from politico: “My Night at the Playboy Mansion With Donald Trump
And other confessions of an ā€œApprenticeā€ contestant.”
    [….]

The most memorable moments, revealing the aspects of his personality I’d never forget, usually happened off-camera. In the second episode of my season on The Apprentice, my team won the week’s competition, and as a reward, Trump escorted us on a trip to the Playboy mansion, where we would party with Hugh Hefner and whatever Playmates were there. My team consisted mostly of women. As a chauffeur opened the door on our limousine, we were greeted by Hefner’s three then-ā€œgirlfriends,ā€ Kendra Wilkinson, Holly Madison and Bridget Marquardt, who were then costars on a reality show of their own. They ushered us inside. After a fireside chat with Hef, we headed to the backyard, where dozens of women — some wearing bikinis, others sporting bunny ears and bowties — surprised our team with a pool party.

Toward the end of the evening, I found myself in a small circle, conversing with Trump, Hefner and another contestant. With a wry smile, Trump looked at Hefner and said, ā€œIt’s hard for me to tell which of these girls are yours, and which ones are mine.ā€ The women on my team were well-credentialed business executives, people Trump had supposedly hand-picked for their skills. In that moment, the only real difference to Trump between them and the scantily clad Playmates who were there for his entertainment was that some of the women were ā€œhis,ā€ and some weren’t.

  18. “Why wasn’t the Comfort being readied BEFORE the hurricanes hit.”

Jamie, and why , why, why didn’t they let the Cubans send in their docs a week ago?

and thanks for the “rover” vid…. one of the best scary devices ever imagined until harry potter’s dementer [wikia: wraith-like dark creature (considered one of the foulest to inhabit the world) employed by the British Ministry of Magic as the guard of Azkaban Prison. The Dementors feed upon human happiness, and thus cause depression and despair to anyone near them. They can also consume a person’s soul, leaving their victims in a permanent vegetative state, and thus are often referred to as “soul-sucking fiends”Ā ] thought up by jk rowling.

  19. Why weren’t the Seabees ready to go to build roads and bridges immediately?

Jamie, that is so last century,

Why don’t we have Berger Inc, Kelloge Root and Brown inc, and many other private military/ State AID contractors.

Do we even have any SeaBees?

    Jack

  20. ā€œI told you the NFL was out of the bowels of hell and nothing more than a propaganda machine, with mindless sheep who are brainwashed every night of the week with the alpha, gamma, theta waves, the delta waves lulling people into trances, slipping people into mass hypnosis,ā€ Zilinsky said. ā€œThat’s declassified, folks. High-level mind control projects have been exposed, it’s on record. TV, that noise box, is the most disgusting invent

“Secretary of Health and Human Services Thomas Price offered his resignation earlier today and the president accepted,” said a statement from the office of the White House press secretary.

During an impromptu news conference Friday on the South Lawn as he departed for New Jersey, Trump described Price as a “good man.” On Wednesday, though, the president said he was “not happy” about the flights, which a Politico investigation found cost at least $400,000.

  24. Too bad about Tom Price. (heheheheheh). Hope he’s got a good lawyer for the insider trading investigation – and I hope he or she isn’t very good.

  25. Sorry but the Trump junta’s slow response to the situation in Puerto Rico is callous cold and heartless. We have both the resources and the manpower. There will be gallons of ink spilled over the various reasons, but my gut says that the primary reason is that Puerto Rican’s are the wrong color.

This is not a gang that has exhibited much if any tolerance for diversity or understanding of it. It was true during the campaign and it will continue to be true as long as they attempt to govern.

For most of them, if it ain’t white, it ain’t right, sums up their governing philosophy .

It is fair to note here that republicans in congress are little if any better.

  26. I’m pretty sure that landĀ smaller than a continentĀ surrounded by water is kinda an island most of the time. If the water is salty its sometimes an ocean. News flash, right? Ā

  27. Mr Jace, the same goes for the Virgin Islands, even though these Virginians aren’t Hispanic.

I’m all for statehood for both, and also Guam and Samoa.
