    On May 22, 1856, the “world’s greatest deliberative body” became a combat zone. In one of the most dramatic and deeply ominous moments in the Senate’s entire history, a member of the House of Representatives entered the Senate Chamber and savagely beat a senator into unconsciousness.

    The inspiration for this clash came three days earlier when Senator Charles Sumner, a Massachusetts antislavery Republican, addressed the Senate on the explosive issue of whether Kansas should be admitted to the Union as a slave state or a free state. In his “Crime Against Kansas” speech, Sumner identified two Democratic senators as the principal culprits in this crime—Stephen Douglas of Illinois and Andrew Butler of South Carolina. He characterized Douglas to his face as a “noise-some, squat, and nameless animal . . . not a proper model for an American senator.” Andrew Butler, who was not present, received more elaborate treatment. Mocking the South Carolina senator’s stance as a man of chivalry, the Massachusetts senator charged him with taking “a mistress . . . who, though ugly to others, is always lovely to him; though polluted in the sight of the world, is chaste in his sight—I mean,” added Sumner, “the harlot, Slavery.”

    Representative Preston Brooks was Butler’s South Carolina kinsman. If he had believed Sumner to be a gentleman, he might have challenged him to a duel. Instead, he chose a light cane of the type used to discipline unruly dogs. Shortly after the Senate had adjourned for the day, Brooks entered the old chamber, where he found Sumner busily attaching his postal frank to copies of his “Crime Against Kansas” speech.

    Moving quickly, Brooks slammed his metal-topped cane onto the unsuspecting Sumner’s head. As Brooks struck again and again, Sumner rose and lurched blindly about the chamber, futilely attempting to protect himself. After a very long minute, it ended.

    Bleeding profusely, Sumner was carried away. Brooks walked calmly out of the chamber without being detained by the stunned onlookers. Overnight, both men became heroes in their respective regions.

    Surviving a House censure resolution, Brooks resigned, was immediately reelected, and soon thereafter died at age 37. Sumner recovered slowly and returned to the Senate, where he remained for another 18 years. The nation, suffering from the breakdown of reasoned discourse that this event symbolized, tumbled onward toward the catastrophe of civil war.

    When algorithms are hijacked this way, they stop reflecting reality and start reshaping it. The stories topping your feed aren’t necessarily what most people care about — they’re what was engineered to trigger the algorithm.

    This creates a dangerous distortion. It rewards the loudest, angriest voices. It pushes moderate or nuanced discussion to the margins. It makes conspiracy theories appear mainstream while making consensus facts seem contested.

    It also hijacks the news cycle. Journalists, trained to treat trending topics as newsworthy, end up covering manufactured controversies as if they were organic phenomena. The algorithm hands the microphone to the arsonist, and the newsroom amplifies them further.

    The most sophisticated players — Trump’s digital operation, his media allies, and their orbiting influencers — understand that controlling the feed means controlling the conversation. And controlling the conversation is power.

    They’ve failed to control the fear message that is meant to keep folks afraid to speak out, show up at protests, or boo the tyrant turd at sporting events.

    They’ve failed to keep the lower courts from doing their jobs properly.

    Those who obey or worse, obey in advance, are either on N&zis who aren’t sure if it’s safe to come out, or they need something from the government (which is now just Orange Adolf, thanks to the Russo-Christo-fascist-Republicans in Congress), or they are afraid tRUMPsky will out-lawyer them.

    Notice that Michael Wolff says terrible things about Pedo-Don without getting sued…because he had Epstein interviews.

    Notice Hunter Biden didn’t take back what he said about Melania and Epstein and tRUMP, but the threat of a lawsuit never transpired…because it would open up a can of worms.

    This pedo-ring is very widespread and those involved don’t want to be deposed. They want it to go away, but it will not.

    A woman has accused President Donald Trump of sexually assaulting her at the 1997 U.S. Open in New York. In an exclusive interview with The Guardian, Amy Dorris said Mr. Trump groped various parts of her body and forced his tongue into her mouth outside a bathroom at the event.

    Dorris told The Guardian the incident occurred when she was 24 years old and visiting New York with her then-boyfriend Jason Binn, who was friends with Mr. Trump. She said she and Binn attended the U.S. Open with Mr. Trump on September 5, 1997, where they watched matches from his private box. Photos published by the Guardian show Trump, Dorris and others in the box.

    Dorris told the outlet that at one point during the event, she went to the bathroom that was located in the box behind a partition wall and Mr. Trump was waiting outside the bathroom when she left.

    “He just shoved his tongue down my throat and I was pushing him off. And then that’s when his grip became tighter and his hands were very gropey and all over my butt, my breasts, my back, everything,” she told The Guardian.

    The Guardian reported that Dorris had told several people about what allegedly occurred. The outlet said that Dorris called a friend in New York, as well as her mother, immediately after the alleged assault, and that she eventually disclosed the events to some friends and her therapist. What she told those individuals matched what she told the outlet, The Guardian reported.

    *Instead of booing, the crowd at the US Open should’ve just chanted EPSTEIN in unison.

    The Austin Democrat has made a name for himself with his viral social media presence. His entry to the race pits him against former U.S. Rep. Colin Allred in the increasingly crowded primary.

    A former public school teacher and nonprofit director, Talarico, 36, has served in the Texas House since 2018, representing North Austin and parts of Pflugerville and Round Rock, where he grew up. He hopes to one day become a pastor, earning his master’s degree in theological studies last year from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary.

    Talarico will join former U.S. Rep. Colin Allred and former astronaut Terry Virts in a closely watched Democratic primary that might still generate more candidates. Former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke of El Paso and U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro of San Antonio have flirted with joining the race.
