  1. op ed today in la times:
Hillary Clinton will recover from WikiLeaks’ data dumps. LGBT individuals around the world may not be so lucky

Sensitive subject matter requires great sensitivity.

WikiLeaks’ mission is to expose government wrongdoing and corruption through radical transparency, promoting a culture of greater accountability. By forcibly outing LGBT people, though, the site has done the opposite—helped bigots, bullies and oppressive regimes everywhere.

Hillary Clinton will likely recover just fine from these leaks and from future data dumps. Not everyone may be so lucky.

  2. jace, is this from sky valley chronicle an accurate account of your weather woes?

It was projected to be a whopper of a storm, that third leg remnant of a Pacific Ocean typhoon that was expected to hit Washington state Saturday and rage on through Saturday night.

Lots of people got their fireplaces stocked with wood and ready to go for the expected power outages and prepared in other ways.

In the end, better prepared than not.

This time the preparations weren’t needed because the big storm decided to stray off its projected track a bit – veering about 30 mile off our coastline — and screamed over Vancouver Island rather than making a hard landing on western Washington.

So the expected wind gusts of 65 to 70 mph and torrential rains luckily never materialized, much to the joy perhaps of many homeowners who have large trees in the vicinity of their houses; the kind that come down in heavy winds and take out roofs and the rooms below.

  3. Jace….   ahhhh….  now I feel calm and uplifted…

  4. conclusion from garrison keillor’s: The Don is four centuries too late

Mr. Trump would’ve enjoyed the 17th century, the tumult, the divine right of kings, the suppression of Parliament. Vituperation was normal discourse, the idea of privileged sexual aggression was common in high places, money flowed freely, rich men commissioned great monuments to themselves. He was in excellent form on Sunday night, strutting, stalking, words and phrases flowing out of him like water from a hose — “disaster” and “horrible” over and over — and if you put him on Grub Street in 1650, he’d be magnificent in his great swirling robes, surrounded by courtiers and sycophants, ranting against the Puritans, supporting the monarchy, smiting his enemies. The problem in 2016 is that most of what he says is a lie. Nobody learns anything from lies. The country is not in crisis. The government is not a disaster; it is a culture of process and law and organization that is alien to him. The Syrian refugee will quickly know more about this country than the man in the triplex penthouse. It would have been better if, instead of running for president and wasting everyone’s time, he’d just sat down and written a novel.

  5. btw, “Mandolin Virtuoso Chris Thile Takes Over As ‘A Prairie Home Companion’ Host” according to wbur
On how the show will be different
“It has to be different. It will necessarily be different, because I’m a very different person from Garrison. No one wants to hear me doing my best Garrison Keillor… I think that he’s inimitable; he’s one in a billion. He created this incredible show — the actual format of the show, there’s no call to change that, there’s no reason to change that.
I liken it to a string quartet, two violins, viola and cello. What a profound music-making machine the string quartet is. And what a profound way to organize two hours of variety, is ‘Prairie Home Companion.’ I look at it that way. And so if you’ll follow the analogy, then Garrison is kind of like Hayden in that situation, kind of having developed the string quartet. And I want to write for that string quartet. I can’t wait to get my grubby mitts on that string quartet, and do some creating and curating…”

  6. The aforementioned Mr.Berry…….the band didn’t quite know how to rock but Chuck gave ’em a wee lesson…..

  7. Meet Gale Storm, rescue Brittany Spaniel and maybe Labrador Retriever mix.  She is about one and one half, and had a litter already.  She is now in a home where she gets to play everyday – mine.  She is a sweety with a good dispensation and tolerates cats. (sorry about the picture rotation, that is something that WP did)

  8. 2016’S MANIFEST MISOGYNY
At the second Presidential debate, Trump declared Clinton a fighter. But what she’s had to fight all along is sexism like his.

    By Margaret Talbot

There’s something both grotesque and bracing about the confrontation between Clinton, with her disciplined professionalism, and Trump, with his increasingly frenzied assertions of male prerogative. Like the female protagonist of a quest narrative—or, perhaps, of a dystopian fantasy—Clinton has made it through all her challenges to face the bull-headed Minotaur of sexism at the end of the maze.

  9. Jace, the letter your daughter-in-law earmarked was heartbreaking; and, the newspaper article seemed spot-on. Thank both ladies for sharing. Then, there’s the matter of your choice of the Brahms for this morning’s treat–absolutely superb–many thanks!

  10. Enough is enough — scrap the third debate
    Michael Cohen

Think about what happened on Sunday. Trump called Clinton a liar. He said she had hate in her heart. He told her that if he were president he’d throw her in jail. He talked about the philandering of her husband Bill Clinton and even brought to the debate hall women who’ve accused him of sexual assault. He lied incessantly, about both his own plans and those of Clinton. He sought to intimidate her by looming over her and standing directly behind her as she answered questions.
The stage business was at pace with Trump’s unprecedented political and personal attacks, never before seen in a presidential debate. While watching this debasement of the political process, it took all my strength not to hurl my television out the window.
And yet, somehow, Hillary Clinton maintained her composure. She didn’t get angry; she didn’t get petulant; she didn’t give Trump a richly deserved slap in the face. Amazingly, she answered all the questions posed to her with a combination of wonkiness, empathy, and grace. She largely ignored Trump’s constant lies and somehow stuck to her game plan of not engaging with his bullying. Lost in the coverage of Trump’s crudeness, ignorance, and classless behavior, was Clinton’s debate performance — one of the most extraordinary in modern political history.

  11. Ahhhh but now she can’t.  Since Trump called for drug testing before the debate (since she’s obviously using some kind of performance enhancing stuff), if she withdraws from the debate – it’s because of his accusation.  Perhaps there’s some genius somewhere on planet Trump?

  12. If I were her I’d go to the debate and say according to Pulitzer prize winning Politifact Trump lies every 3 1/2 minutes since the moderator doesn’t think it’s his job to fact check  I’m going to have this clock here so people can tell what’s going on

  13. Pat: Love the Keillor piece. He’s absolutely correct in his assessment of Trump’s ideology. Sorry to hear he’s stepping down. His calm, folksy reality checking will be sorely missed.

Tony: All those Hillary reports are so true. After so much has been written, for years, about all the good she’s done and will continue to do she should be winning by a landslide…too bad Trump supporters can’t read!

Jace: Lovely and soothing! Just what I need when I think about what Trump is prepared to do to our country.

It looks like I’m not the only one who is worried:

    http://www.politico.com/story/2016/10/donald-trump-rigged-elections-republicans-229846

    (…)

They worry about how his egged-on followers might respond, and the violence – perhaps against Muslims, Latinos or any of the many other groups he has targeted in his campaign rhetoric — that might follow.

“People do dangerous things when dangerous leaders foment deep resentment,” said Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.).

    (…)

Ari Fleischer, who worked for George W. Bush on the 2000 campaign and later his White House press secretary, contrasted how “Al Gore graciously accepted the outcome” to Trump’s rhetoric that has him “disgusted.”

“If he never calls to concede, he’ll go down as one of the sorest of sore losers,” Fleischer said, but “if Donald Trump loses and fights the outcome, it will make many of his followers, which means millions of people, question the legitimacy of our American government. That’s destructive and corrosive.”

    (…)

Only Republicans—and maybe leaders from the right who aren’t going to be suspected to be part of the “establishment”—will be able to move the country forward if Trump won’t, many agree.

“This is on them. They’ve created this. They need to defuse,” said a senior Democrat on Saturday evening.

    (…)

“Imagine if North Korea or Iran had hacked the RNC and Democrats were publicly using the materials to their benefit,” complained a senior Democratic official Saturday morning.

So far, there have been many hacks into Democratic political groups, but notably none into Republican groups or the Trump campaign, which has Trump’s unofficial adviser Roger Stone proudly in touch with WikiLeaks and the candidate himself citing the discoveries constantly on the stump.

    (…)

Fratto argued that journalists and cable networks will shape what happens next: “People in the media made choices about covering Trump early on. I think they regret those choices and we’ll see whether they truly regret those choices,” he said. “Because on Nov. 9, there aren’t good reasons to give him the kind of attention that he’s going to want.”

    (…)

“Trump is now attacking our democracy. Any elected R who doesn’t condemn this anti-American thug will carry a moral stain forever,” tweeted Republican strategist Mike Murphy on Saturday, adding the hashtag “#cowards.”

“Democracies rely on some modicum of trust between people & their institutions. Destroy that thru conspiracy mongering & there’s no going back,” tweeted Neera Tanden, a former Clinton aide who’s remained in touch with the campaign in Brooklyn.

    (…)

Try telling that to the Trump supporters.

“Pitchforks and torches time,” tweeted Milwaukee County Sherriff David Clarke, Jr. Saturday.

Or Douglas Wells, who said Saturday at a Trump rally in Portsmouth, N.H. that if Clinton wins, he’d “probably go buy another gun before she stops selling them.”

Many of those concerns have been voiced here. So we’re all talking about it and worrying about it but what will it take before someone does something about it? This man wants a civil war so that he can be king of the world. Who will stand up to him? I know Hillary is doing her best to be that lone voice in the wilderness but he has created such a s..tstorm of hate towards her that someone with HHHUUUGGGE gravitas needs to step in and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Do we even have anyone on this earth who would be seen as that sort of person anymore? Who has the respect of people everywhere? The Dalai Lama perhaps? 50 years ago I might have said the Pope, but that star has certainly faded. Has technology brought us to the point where we don’t have a single reputable person who can rise up and shout…

    The Emperor has no clothes!

  14. Granny

Good info in your post. I hope it doesn’t come down to violence against HRC or her supporters. The Trump people i have know (my clients) are mostly reasonable and supporting him because their Republican’s.. A few closet married guys i know are voting for Trump and are true believers. Lol, Jason said yesterday, Putin is a strong leader like Trump.. I said to him, you do know a little history regarding Putin… Nope, Trump likes him so he must be good.. I said, just Google his name.. Hello, dumb as a sack of rocks…

  15. Even if Clinton was everything Newtie said  I’d rather have her  then Newtie who has fed well at the public trough (tax exempt)

  16. Gina Loudin  trump liar another surrogate who starts off saying I am a victim of sexual assault so it makes the interview impossible’

and the lies lies lies  Alex Witless lets her

  17. granny m, the culture nowadays would opt more toward tom hanks than the Dalai lama.

Reader’s Digest Trust Poll: The 100 Most Trusted People in America

Reader’s Digest teamed up with research firm The Wagner Group to poll over 1,000 Americans and discover which individuals and the ideals they represent have earned our confidence. Here, the surprising winners,…..

    1. Tom Hanks, actor..

[followed by actors Sandra bullock denzel Washington, meryl streep. then followed maya angelou, Spielberg, bill gates, alex trebeck, Melinda getes and Julia Roberts… ]

  18. I’ve been groped and propositioned inappropriately and for the most part – I’ve reacted by leaving if possible and if not having a giant temper tantrum  no job no amount of money would have made a difference. But I can see where people dependent might do something different.

I rode the subway in NY  at the time late 60-early 70’s it was a freak show of exposures and touchers.  I always made a scene and made sure everyone on the car knew

I think women are tired of this as a fact of life and that Stepford Trump Supporter who says she is a counselor for women who have been assaulted should have her license revoked plus she did not have a single fact straight

  19. BB

Love the name Gale Storm and she looks sweet and lots of fun– as good looking as the original

  20. Pat: Sadly you may be right about Tom. If so, he needs to step up!!! I love that poem by Jimmy Stewart. I actually remember watching him do that live years ago, when I still watched the tonight show. Johnny often asked him if he had a new poem when he was a guest. He used to visit Westover AFB often when it was still a SAC base. My father met him and a family friend who worked for the Base Commander spent quite a lot of time around him. He was a lovely, intelligent man and had great love for his country, evidenced by the fact that he served his country for most of his life.

KGC: I think I missed the article you’re referring to re “that Stepford Trump Supporter” but since I actually was “a counselor for women who have been assaulted”, I can’t imagine one of us ever being a Trump supporter! She may just be a liar like her candidate-you reap what you sow 🙂

Tony: I also know some staunch Trumpetts who are “dumb as a sack of rocks”. I believe that the majority of his supporters would fall into that category. I think you’re right that the rest are just firm Republicans. My question to them would be when do you stop being a firm Republican and start being a decent human being who can not tolerate, let alone support, a racist, misogynist war monger?

  21.

    granny

I saw her being interviewed on MSNBC and they have started bringing her out since the rolling wave of women has come forward

her argument was they should have come forward sooner  she’s a piece of garbage  She also starts the interview saying she was a victim of sexual assault and that is the end of the discussion

  22. KGC: Thanks for the follow-up.She’s definitely a liar on both counts. She’s not a victim or a counselor. Even women who are victimized by low life scum bags are reluctant to come forward. Being assaulted by a wealthy, powerful man comes with a whole set of new problems. I’ve counseled women whose attackers/spouses/boyfriends were police officers or had some position of stature in the community and they faced the same problems. Some never could bring themselves to go to court!

  23. Granny

the woman in question Gina Loudin is a tea party talk show host and was not correctly identified by msnbc although on other outlets she is correctly id’d as a right wing loon

  24. welcome Gale Storm!

Jace, thank you for the letters from your family…I read that only one in five woman admit to assault. I believe the numbers are higher.  Like your wife, I was almost a victim of attempted rape at knife point…many times sexual assault is about power over a woman.  I almost detailed my history on a comment one day…just too much, I think, for trail.  I have been threatened, kidnapped, drugged, etc. and perhaps it was the sign of the times.  There seems to be a punitive quality to assault, too.  But, the abuse started at age 11 and continued throughout my life, different incidents.  I was lucky that my abuse was not from my family, but from outside my family.  I often think of trump and the passive incest and pedophilia with his daughter, Ivanka.

  25. BW: Thank you for sharing what you could of your story. I hear how difficult that must be for you. I hope you have found helpers to talk to, ears and hearts to hear you and shoulders to lean on over the years.

  26. thanks, granny….men get abused and raped, too.  Counseling is wonderful thing and I learned about passive incest in counseling with my ex…my exFIL was a narcissist and an abuser. (diagnosis, not imagined)  My ex never recovered from his childhood…he self medicated with opiods and developed lace brain.  Last I heard, he was in Mexico.  His sister may have fared better, but I found her to be very damaged.

  27. Rudy thinks this campaign is his last chance for relevance — he is wrong that ship has sailed…. when he ran for president and was an expensive miserable failure

He should be happy with all the money has made off 9/11 and fear mongering

Why does anyone defer to him? He’s a coward.

The Big Giant Tax Cheeto syas something outrageous and then Fox issues a story to justify it speaking of rigged media

Rudy is so proud of having to rigg the debate so Trump will do ok

You’ll see, Chris Wallace is going to come through for @realDonaldTrump! #TrumpPence16

  28. Blonde Wino,

The letters were only links sent to me by wife and daughter in law. My wife was never a victim. Thank God.

Your story on the other hand sounds chilling. So very sorry.

  29. I caught Pelosi and Rude-y on Tapper’s show.   What a contrast.  Class and thoughtfulness versus the unhinged. Rude-y got so turned around and stuck his foot in his mouth so many times by Tapper pressing him over the issue of trump calling his accusers liars and trying to differentiate what Trump was doing from what he claims Hillary was doing he had lint from his socks between his teeth.

  30. Rude-y was blathering about dead people voting and people voting 10 times in Chicago – he was out of his mind.

  31. Pogo: Normal, intelligent people know he & Rumpelstiltskin are making this up as they go.

Problem is, rocks and stumps will believe them.
