  1. jack, thanks.Ā  here’s also a tribute from willie the shake for our summer holiday in art land

Sonnet 18: Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?Ā by William Shakespeare
Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
    And often is his gold complexion dimmed;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course untrimmed.
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
    Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st;
Nor shall death brag thou wand’rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st,
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
  2. something different in re nature-plus-manmade art this summer

ā€˜Largest wind instrument’: LA musician records duet with Golden Gate’s eerie hum | San Francisco | The Guardian

For more than a year, the Golden Gate Bridge has been makingĀ an ethereal hummingĀ sound on windy days that has aggravated neighbors, charmed fans and sparked countless jokes.

Now the strange noise, which has been described as akin to bothĀ a wheezing kazooĀ and a ghostly chant, has inspired its own album.

This week Los Angeles guitarist and songwriter Nate Mercereau released a series of duets that utilize the bridge’s din as a backing track. Mercereau, a songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, teamed up with Bay Area sound engineer Zach Parkes to record four tracks, layering the sounds the bridge makes in high winds with haunting melodies from Mercereau’s guitar synthesizer.

The project, titledĀ Duets | Golden Gate,Ā also includedĀ a videoĀ of him improvising the instrumental tracks with wind at his face and the bridge humming in the background.

  3. Summer time, sum, sum,summer time . . .
I am trying to write up my thoughts about the alternate universe, aka cult followers, trying to focus on the actual issues as they see them.Ā  Although not new, I think the Greeks described the issues, the SFB era allowed them to fantasize about reviving the heyday of 1848.Ā

  4. ok so, BiD, based on things i’ve read, but without a perceived obligation to corroborate with links, right now:

-trials for a 3rd booster have been underway for a while

-T-cells in bone marrow retain some sort of immune response to C-19 after vaccination and begin producing anti-bodies upon subsequent infection, even if antibodies aren’t detected by blood tests (supposedly)

  5. …read last night that fecal transmission routes are still being considered as relevant vectors, including flatulence

(i think you’re being a bit overcautious if you’re fully vaccinated but conducting yourself like you’re not- you are 99.5% protected against hospitalization and 99.9% protected against c-19 induced death)

((that means out of 1000 fully vaccinated people who contract c-19, 5 might require hospitalization and 1 might die of it, those are common flu statsšŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø))

  6. To conclude, if you’re fully-vaccinated and still practicing best-protocol, you’re doing it to protect vulnerable community members (whether you realize it, or not) but everybody in your community has access to free vaccination at this point, so how many hoops do you want to jump through for people who will jump through none for you? Ā That’s a personal judgment.

    okāœŒļø

  7. There was a 90 year old man who married a very young bride.Ā  His children warned them that this could be fatal.Ā  His response:Ā  If she dies, she dies.

My attitude towards those unwilling to vaccinate:Ā  If the die they die.Ā  Do it at home.

Leave the hospitals to the under 12s, those with underlying conditions, and break through vaccinators who have still become seriously ill.

  8. Just when you think they can’t get anymore stupid –

State Senator Wendy Rogers took toĀ TwitterĀ on Friday and was apparently responding to the decision by the Cleveland Indians baseball team toĀ change their name to the Cleveland Guardians.
Rogers demanded on June 15 that the 2020 presidential election in Arizona be re-run. She based this on the election audit in the state’s Maricopa County, whichĀ has been criticized for pursuing conspiracy theoriesĀ such as searching for bamboo fibers in ballots based on the idea that some 40,000 ballots were shipped in from Asia.

On Friday, Rogers sent a short tweet that appeared to reference a variety of issues, including so-called “cancel culture” and the removal of statues.
“I like Indians and I like Redskins, I like Aunt Jemima and I like Uncle Ben. I like Robert E Lee and I like Stonewall Jackson. I don’t like traitors who hate America. Stand up for our culture!”” Rogers wrote.

  9. It would seem that the Delta VariantĀ  is bringing a lot of wing nuts to Jesus, and the idea of “Germ Theory”.Ā  .Ā
    One way or another.Ā

  10. ā€˜To Those Who Think COVID Is A Hoax, You’re Crazy’: Denver Radio Host Steffan Tubbs Recovering After Being Hospitalized
    ———————————————————–

NASHVILLE, TENN. — A conservative talk radio host from Tennessee who had been a vaccine skeptic until he was hospitalized from COVID-19 now says his listeners should get vaccinated.
Phil Valentine’s brother, Mark Valentine, spoke at length on WWTN-FM in Nashville on Thursday about his brother’s condition, saying he is in a critical care unit on supplemental oxygen, but not on a ventilator. Phil Valentine has had an afternoon talk radio show on the station for years

  11. ā€œHow protected am I against delta if fully-vaccinatedā€ is the question on everyone’s lips, so here’s what i think i know:

the ā€œIsraeli studyā€ found Pfizer to be only 39% effective against infection, but 90% against severe infection, with most cases being asymptomatic. Ā Not great, But:

…couple that with responsible practices that reduce the viral load acquired, like masks, distancing, and avoiding crowded areas, and you can live a life, as my family and i are doing, we all work, socialize limitedly and responsibly, travel, and i don’t believe we have yet been infected, although it seems delta is going to be unavoidable- that’s why we got vaccinatedšŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

i’ll do anything outdoors without a mask, even around people, except very large groups like protests and concerts, but outdoor transmission, according to available information (from what i’ve read), is very rare. Ā i am avoiding indoor concerts, conventions, sporting events, and the like. Ā i’ll dine al fresco at a restaurant but never inside. Ā i shop off-peak if i can, still wear a mask, but am not terrified of large, high-ceiling retail environments, because as i’ve said, i’ve seen no evidence of large outbreaks within them (if you have any, feel free to share).

Fully-vaxxed guests are welcome in the home and we all conduct ourselves normally

Oh, since i am male and a possibly a little intimidating-looking to some, i make an effort to only use my mask when necessary and try and show my face before entering a public building

  12. Republicans’ anti-government chickens have finally come home to roost
On vaccines, the right’s decades-long anti-government propaganda campaign comes back to bite themĀ  ………………………Ā  Ā
The problem is that the virus is spreading, restrictions have been lifted and the Republican base is refusing to save itself. The anti-government chickens have finally come home to roost — and they’re killing Republicans.Ā

  13. known unknown: ā€œhow long does protection LAST after full vaccination?ā€

…not sure anyone knows that, yet. Ā i’m assuming i’m near peak immunity, now, so i am really trying to enjoy the summer with minimal covid anxiety. Ā Fetal position is a shitty way to live

  14. The sixties, primed by the ā€œon the road, ā€œwild onesā€ and Elvis fifties, stopped the world in its tracks—-kicked fuckin ass from start to very last dregs.

  15. They had taken the whole Beat Generation and reduced it to Maynard G. Krebs. Ā TV was invincible.

  16. Little did they know they were about to get beat like the neighbor’s mule along with every damn thing else.
    The Sixties.

  17. I bet there’s a bunch done snuck off and got the vac and kept
it under their hat. Ā  lol. Ā  Ā Those people are crazy.

  18. Ā jack – Beautiful selection. Ā Anyone know what the giant, multi-stringed instrument with the seemingly unnecessary long neck (the keys were about where they should be, normally; the rest seems to be for show) is called?

  19. Sixties: ā€œI’m going to have to go and find me some of that pot.ā€ Ā Then by the seventies I was getting it in the freaking mail from Vietnam and Lenny had been dead since 66.
    Shit.

  20. I’d have to re-read that famous play writer guy to see if there was any kind of connection between that story of his and my calling the sixties a Crucible.

  21. Oh, so there are more keys at the top I couldn’t see. Ā That’s a monster.Ā  She mentioned getting it through airport security. Where would could it be stored, other than the cargo hold?

  22. Sturgeone

    You may well be right

The CrucibleĀ is a 1953 play by American playwright Arthur Miller. It is a dramatized and partially fictionalized story of the Salem Witch Trials that took place in the Massachusetts Bay ColonyĀ during 1692–93. Miller wrote the play as an allegory for McCarthyism,Ā when the United States government persecuted people accused of being communists.Ā  Miller was questioned by the House of Representatives Committee on Un-American Activities in 1956 and convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to identify others present at meetings he had attended.

  23. We finally reached 100 degrees. Many more triple-digit days to come. We’ll see if Greg’s power grid hold.

  24. So we worked our way all the way up to the super-billionaires and they all wanted to be an astronaut. Ā

  25. This summer themeĀ  hit me prettyĀ  hard.Ā
For me, summer was a chanceĀ  to met Debbie Thompson stealing her dad’s pea greenĀ  VW bug and driving it to the Klapp swimming pool.Ā

Now , it’s the dreadĀ  of Mega-Fires , red tides, Mega Droughts, and cyclones .

No more T-shirts , cutoffs, and Honda’s in the hills.Ā

    The best summer song.

  26. Now we are running fromĀ  brown water , to no water , and flaming bits of trees raining down on us.Ā

    Nature bats last.Ā
    Buckle yer chin strap kids.Ā
If you are wearing flip-flops . STOP ITĀ  !Ā
I was wearingĀ  the latest design on 7/31/76 .Ā
Estes Park , I was making money hand over fist.Ā  Colorado’s 100th birthday year.
At lunch I went into townĀ  for take out for the shop.
When I got back to the Dark Horse Leather , there was 8 inchesĀ  of water flowing over our parking lot intoĀ  the Big Thompson River.Ā  It took both of them right off my feet.Ā  ( It was raining like hell at time, and it only got worse. )Ā
No one ever saved themselves wearing flip/flops, or panty hoseĀ  in aĀ  Jet-A fire.Ā
When you fly wear cotton. , and good shoes.Ā

  27. I am still seethingĀ  about that woman in Arizona.Ā
” I like Indians, I like Redskins,Ā  I like crazy WhiteĀ  Bitches, in the Arizona Senate. “

  28. That is a key idea , the modern American Right would fail an 8th grade history test.Ā  Even as they lecture the rest of us aboutĀ  the ” True meaning of America” .Ā
That is theirĀ  keystone.Ā  Only they have the blueprint of the founders.Ā

But they can’t name the branches of the federal government.Ā

  29. In 2022 if I was runningĀ  as democrat , my theme isĀ  ……………. ” Just howĀ  crazy is my opponent ? ”
Trust me ,Ā  we are about to see every fruit cakeĀ  that has been in circulation sinceĀ  Rush attacked the Clintons .Ā
They will be running for every officeĀ  from dog catcherĀ  to the Chief Justice.Ā

    This just in –
Bill and Hillary are still alive !
Rush is still dead.Ā  And otherĀ  AM talk radio hostsĀ  are about to join him.Ā

    Just culling the herd .Ā
How does one know when you are full of shit ?Ā
When you die gagging for air.Ā

  30. HackingĀ  spitĀ  –
I boughtĀ  my first packĀ  when JFKĀ  was in office .
    I paidĀ  35 cents .
    This morning I paid $ 7. 23 .
I smokedĀ  real CamelsĀ  for over 30 years.
I have a complete understandingĀ  of all this .Ā
I got my shots , and never changed my system.
I have the crappiestĀ  lungs in Lubbock
I could neverĀ  kick smoking , but IĀ  understandĀ  “Germ Theory “.Ā

IĀ  learned that the same year I took up smoking.Ā

Part of this messĀ  is at the feet of our schools.Ā

Tell me what a virusĀ  is , and it’s life cycle .Ā

The really scary thingĀ  virusesĀ  are not “alive” , the rest of NatureĀ  has rules .
Not VirusesĀ  they live by each strain’s code.Ā

And they above all else can wait for tens of thousands of years.Ā
At this pointĀ  I worry about dogs, wolves,Ā  and elephants.Ā
These old virusesĀ  melting outĀ  doesn’t really pose a threat to us.Ā
But it couldĀ  kill everyĀ  canineĀ  in the modern world.Ā

    And all the elephants.Ā

  31. If the blinkingĀ  bar , and the mouse arrowĀ  were red , I could see themĀ  in a sea of black and white.Ā

We could do that .Ā  The world would not end.Ā
And ,lots of old peopleĀ  would rejoice, and spell better.Ā Ā

  32. A word aboutĀ  these timesĀ  guys wearing “man buns” ………………. You do not want them in your canoe .Ā
    They cannotĀ  Ā locateĀ  a 5/16thĀ  box end wrench.Ā

AndĀ  5/16thĀ  box end wrenches are coming back in style.Ā

  33. Joe,Ā  how can I learn about being a mechanic?

Robert,Ā  if you can lay under a truck for three hours , with old grease , oil, salt, and dirt fallingĀ  in your eyes.Ā

    You can beĀ  a mechanic.Ā

Now get meĀ  a 5/16th box end wrench.Ā

  34. Summer Time. – Louis and Ella. The best.Ā
Love that baroque lute. You’d never get that in an overhead bin.Ā
Bink, You and I agree on Covid protocols. First East Bumfuck outbreak was among staff and customers at the new Kroger, which is a huge grocery store, occupies the Kmart site for the Kmart that used to be there. Big, open, high ceilings.Ā

  35. That was on the 8 track the nightĀ  I met Hunter Thompson’s dobermansĀ  at Woody Creek.

His gatekeeper and I got really drunkĀ  in the bar of the Jerome Hotel in Aspen.Ā
He had ball of hash the size of a monkey fist.Ā

  36. God do I missĀ  smoking hash with 10 people,Ā  in a chillum .
The guy that bought the SlaughterhouseĀ  commune had 2 kilos , we smoked off that for nearly 2 years.Ā

The little guy that looks like Einstein was one ofĀ  the biggestĀ  dealers in BerkleyĀ  in the late 60’s.Ā  Mick boughtĀ  an entire 460 acre hot springs.Ā
That is his store at 940 Pearl St, in Boulder.Ā

He taught me to play backgammon,

His very wordsĀ  that very first game.Ā

“Robert , you can winĀ  your first game , but you will lose every one to me after that.”

    He was right.Ā Ā

  37. The summer of 70′Ā  Ā in ColoradoĀ  was pretty amazing .Ā  We changed the state.Ā

Us and the real estateĀ  developers.Ā  In the end they won .Ā
But we set a new course for a new idea, about how to live there.Ā

  38. In the summer of 70′Ā  there was no I-70 tunnel . You had to cross Loveland Pass to get to Vail , on a two lane road that was over 11,000 feet . That had kept the jackassesĀ  out of the West Slope for ever.Ā  Once they opened the tunnel , and plugged an Interstate into it.Ā

It was one of the great sinsĀ  man ever did to the Rockies.Ā

  39. The rich came and bought up everything.Ā  This is why you can’tĀ  live in these towns.Ā  And they can’t find the help to clean their toilets.Ā
It hit Santa Fe first , only their deep cultural roots.Ā  BluntedĀ  the invasion .
Tucker CarlsonĀ  in a fly shop in Montana .
    I rest my case.Ā
