On June 6, 1944, Allied forces invaded Europe. The Normandy landings, the largest amphibious invasion ever undertaken, took years to plan, involved the invention of new technologies and proved that Hitler’s ‘Fortress Europe’ was made of sand.
Photographer Robert F. Sargent took this photo – aptly named “Into the Jaws of Death” – as troops waded ashore on Omaha Beach, the most calamitous of the landing sites. On the day at Omaha, little went to plan, most landing craft missed their targets and German defenses were unexpectedly strong.
Nevertheless, the Allies secured a foothold on all beaches. From there they broke out into Normandy proper as German resistance faltered. D-Day stands out as one of the most crucial moments in history: along with the German collapse on the Eastern Front, the success of the Allies in the West ensured that the Nazi defeat was near.
On Wednesday, I depart for Europe on the first foreign travel of my presidency. …. In this moment of global uncertainty, as the world still grapples with a once-in-a-century pandemic, this trip is about realizing Americaâs renewed commitment to our allies and partners, and demonstrating the capacity of democracies to both meet the challenges and deter the threats of this new age.
[…]
[about biden/putin meeting] When we meet, I will again underscore the commitment of the United States, Europe and like-minded democracies to stand up for human rights and dignity.
I watched entire Trump speech. Vintage Mussolini. Among the many travesties he took complete credit for vaccine distribution, said Biden didn’t have to do anything, but still didn’t tell people to get it.
Thank you Jack. Mozart for a Summer day.

Time to re-watch “The Longest Day”
too bad the media is dumping on manchin about his op-ed explaining why he won’t vote for “for the people act” as long as it’s less than bi-partisan if at all.  further in that op-ed, which they won’t/don’t seem to want to acknowledge, is this part – his strong support of the john lewis voting rights advancement act:
The Voting Rights Act, for example, was monumental in the fight to guarantee freer and fairer elections in the United States. Since its original passage, it has been reauthorized with overwhelming bipartisan votes five separate times. In addition, there is bipartisan support to pass the latest iteration of this legislation, the rightfully named John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would update the formula states and localities must use to ensure proposed voting laws do not restrict the rights of any particular group or population. My Republican colleague, Sen. Lisa Murkowski, has joined me in urging Senate leadership to update and pass this bill through regular order. I continue to engage with my Republican and Democratic colleagues about the value of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and I am encouraged by the desire from both sides to transcend partisan politics and strengthen our democracy by protecting voting rights.
btw, earlier in his op-ed he gigs his colleagues with this:
As a reminder, just four short years ago, in 2017 when Republicans held control of the White House and Congress, President Donald Trump was publicly urging Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster. Then, it was Senate Democrats who were proudly defending the filibuster. Thirty-three Senate Democrats penned a letter to Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. and Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., warning of the perils of eliminating the filibuster.
sure wish more was reported on progress of reforming the rules to make filibuster so cumbersome that it again becomes a rarity as *joe* has proposed in the past.
*both joes for that matter*
Just peeking in here before we leave for Cape Cod. Â I’m taking my iPad. Â I might post from Falmouth… or might not. Â Either way… everyone have a great week!

wearing zipperless pants over diapers. Â Â Sad. Â Like WAY sad.Â
The greatest sad thatâs ever been sadded.
sturge, you referring to photo of him-who-shall-not-be-named wrinkled pants at the speech?
Donald Trump’s latest outing at an event in Greenville, North Carolina, sparked speculation about former the US President wearing a soiled diaper. The social media was splashed with images and videos of Trump’s creased pants which gave the illusion of being wet from the crotch area.
It isn’t the first time that Trump has been associated with wearing diapers during his public appearance. During the last days of his presidency, Trump was trolled as Diaper Don on social media.
Did Trump’s Diaper Leak on the Stage ?
The controversy cropped up after a parody account on Twitter @Donald J Drumpf posted a close-up video of Trump’s pants as he stood on the stage. “My diapers leaked a little! DO NOT RETWEAT!” the tweet read. Within two hours, the video received nearly 128,000 views and was retweeted 13,19 times at the time of the writing.
[continues with several tweets and a video of the alleged “leak”]
I listened to a couple of Trump speech clips on KGO radio San Francisco. Â Trumps voice, always weak, was much weaker. He sounded drugged to me!
looking more closely at that 12:23 photo brings back the image of the head turnings in the exorcist except this was a torso-butt turn that got stuck midway.
too bad SNL has shut down for the season but i bet trevor, bill and stephen will have some things to say.
Wearing your depends or dribbling in your underwear, the hazards of getting old. I’m not one to toss rocks as I’m one of those old farts with socks to his knees while wearing shorts. It is either that or risk losing a leg. Getting old ain’t for sissies.
Jack
Well, the former guyâs entire political image is supposed to based upon a projection of strength, so a weak bladder undermines that.

The reaction from members of the Georgia GOP comes months after both Kemp and Raffensperger refused to help the former President overturn the election results after his loss to President Joe Biden. Trump has endorsed one of Raffensperger’s primary opponents, GOP Rep. Jody Hice, who has embraced the ex-President’s falsehoods about the election.â
Alas, Joe Manchin growing a pair (he wonât) and some Republicans growing a conscience (they canât) are all that will same democracy vis the For The People Act.
The GQP bastards want to make sure they never lose power.
Fah gawdâs sake, Manchin is 73. A lot of Republicans are getting up there, too. Canât they just do the right thing for the country and screw Orange Adolf? Be remembered for saving democracy, not for being complicit in its demise.
MAYBE Manchin is a master-tactitian with a play someone like me is too dull to see
or
MAYBE Manchin is just a pawn of bad-faith obstructionist GQPs
or
as iâve said before
MAYBE he just likes being the belle of the ball
The partyâs over
Would be OK if we can emerge from this with bipartisan support for restoring DOJ powers under Voting Rights Act that SCOTUS scuttled. Think that’s where Manchin is going
I think just a basic restoration of Voting Rights Act would get some Republicans. But trying to set national standards controlling how states run elections and public financing in S1 won’t fly without zapping filibusterÂ
This how LBJ put it to Dirksen for GOP votes he needed to pass voting rights: I’ll pile in a bunch of provisions you can oppose, then I’ll take them out and we’ll pass it
I hope youâre right
just can’t give up on Manchin. He’s a good man, ultimately not going to let blocking voting rights be his legacy
Given the census, redistricting, and the Republican heavy red states, the Voting Rights act is desperately needed in some form or we can kiss the 2022 House majority goodbye.
when it comes to dems threatening to do in the filibuster, moscow mitch is like brer rabbit pleading “no, no, whatever you do, please don’t throw me in the briar patch”
he’s counting on GOPers taking back senate in 2022, likely drooling over the likelihood.
mitch would love to see the filibuster gone when he resumes the throne. he’ll erase everything the dems have done and use his new majority to pass whatever he likes.
that’s what’s behind pretty much of all the senseless blocking – begging dems to throw him in the f-ing briars
