This week I ran across an assorted play list of performances by Jazz, tenor sax great Stan Getz. Starting with his most famous collaboration with João Gilberto, his wife Astrud, and Antônio Carlos Jobim. “The Girl from Ipanema”. From Bebop to Bossa Nova to fusion Jazz, Getz’s cool sax sound was there.
Enjoy, Jack

Canada’s decision to block a $900B Arctic corridor reshapes global trade and Arctic geopolitics, leaving the U.S. and allies scrambling.
Jan 10, 2026
Canada’s $7B Arctic icebreaker push is transforming the Northwest Passage into a controlled trade route worth up to $900B, reshaping sovereignty, global shipping, and U.S.–Canada relations as Trump reacts. As melting ice opens the Arctic, Ottawa’s infrastructure gamble signals a decisive shift in power, enforcement, and control of the world’s next strategic corridor.
So it wasn’t about oil after all. And it sure wasn’t about Democracy. That takes us back to: it was about EPSTEIN.
https://www.newsbreak.com/altitude-post-361905032/4428622576715-european-activist-warns-us-if-you-take-greenland-we-will-take-all-us-bases-in-europe-if-you-go-extreme-we-go-extreme
It has been known in the oil business for almost twenty years that Venezuela was not going to be usable for large quantities of oil or oil products. The infrastructure was damaged then destroyed. The ports almost unusable. The government hostile to just about the entire world. But, the administration of sfb got rid of people who would know that, and stupid had some kind of senile desire to do something to show off his “power”. But, a few hundreds of billions of dollars (yes, for once I am using correct terminology) he will payoff some of the oil companies to make it look like they are going to risk returning to the country. I am sure there are teams in the majors coming up with plans to take the money and not get anyone kidnapped or killed while not doing anything in country.
Jack, Thank you. Great choice and nice memory as I actually heard them live in a small club in San Francisco back in 1962.
Ah my Dad was a big fan of Stan Getz. But then, he was a saxophile. I grew up hearing both Getz and Boots Randolph
Just finished a video reel of clips for our chat today on yesterday’s ICE protests, from MN to the coasts and beyond — Nebraska, Hawaii, Orlando, pretty much everywhere. And mostly spontaneous “flash mobs”. Folks are not sleeping through this one.
I know Trump wants to forget about Epstein, but murdering citizens may be a bridge too far.
The enomrity of illegal actions taken by, and under the guise of, mangomoron is accelerating. Why? The speeding decline of sfb is one thing. The crushing fascistism of the nazi miller is another. There are other white nationalists involved too. The questions of why continue.
The fear of losing power is important, for as soon as sfb is gone, so are they. They are not insulated in their positions so they are not assured of longevity once he is put away somewhere.
We still have the Epstein records that are being protected from public view. At first there was the “he is a pedo”, “he is a rapist”, public reasons. He is already known as those. So this fight that includes illegal international actions does not make sense. I have constantly thought dead girl or live boy. That I still do. He is always afraid of being gay.
But, there are now threads of thought that the dead girl and he was involved somehow showing up in the wilds. As scary and disgusting as that is there might be more to it. He has no empathy at all. Statements about him watching the murder of Good are horrific. He is only for himself.
I won’t use the wording I have been seeing about what he possibly was involved in though it would be a reason his handlers do not want to have the full Epstein records released. Even though he could be declared incompetent in his own defense, he would probably brag about his actions. The guy needs to be roped and tossed into jail.

Just months after President Donald Trump first expressed interest in the United States possibly gaining control over Greenland, some of the richest people in the world—including Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates and Michael Bloomberg—began making strategic investments in the mineral-rich island.
The heir to the Estée Lauder fortune, is credited with giving Trump the idea of taking over Greenland during his first term, former White House national security adviser John Bolton confirmed to Forbes.
Bezos, Gates, Bloomberg: All have invested since 2019 in Kobold Metals, which looks for valuable rare earth minerals used in electronic devices through AI-powered exploration of the island.
Sam Altman: The OpenAI CEO invested in Kobold in 2022.
Peter Thiel: The Paypal and Palantir tech titan funded in early 2021 the startup Praxis, which aims to build a technologically advanced “freedom city” on the island.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pr%C3%B3spera
Próspera, located on the island of Roatán, is one of the most prominent ZEDEs and has been described as a modern iteration of the charter city model, initially proposed by former World Bank chief economist and Nobel laureate Paul Romer. The idea behind charter cities is to establish new urban areas with governance structures that attract investment by ensuring rule of law, economic freedom, and regulatory efficiency. Próspera’s model follows this logic, offering streamlined business regulations, lower taxes, and private arbitration for dispute resolution. It has also been heavily influenced by the Charter Cities Institute (CCI), a Washington, DC-based organization that promotes the development of such special jurisdictions worldwide.
Wealth fund manager Erick Brimen, a Venezuelan, created the idea of Próspera and is its CEO, along with being the CEO of NeWay Capital; Brimen said in 2024 that he conceived of the city as a “poverty relief initiative” for Honduras.
Próspera is also backed by multiple investors, including Balaji Srinivasan, Peter Thiel, and Marc Andreessen, through the venture capital firm Pronomos Capital.
Other than real estate sales, the city has held conferences such as 2024’s biotech startup events which led to $1.5 million in venture capital investments; one of the themes was “Make death optional.” Próspera also hosted a “crypto cities summit” in February 2025.
88% of revenue brought in by Próspera goes to the city, with the rest in a trust that is supposed to be spent on Honduran development.
In April 2022, Honduran President Xiomara Castro signed legislation to repeal the ZEDEs, citing sovereignty concerns. She referred to Próspera as a creation of a “narco-regime” and declaring self-governing ZEDEs like Próspera unconstitutional.
Despite this, Próspera continues to operate, arguing that existing ZEDE agreements grant it legal stability for 50 years. In response to the repeal, Honduras Próspera Inc. sued Honduras for up to $10.7 billion in damages, equivalent to one-third of the country’s GDP.
In July 2022, the U.S. State Department expressed concerns that repealing the ZEDE law might violate international trade agreements, including the DR-CAFTA free trade agreement.
*Make death optional? I read somewhere that Thiel is a monster who wants to live forever. Andreesen is another of the apartheid South Africans, along with Thiel, Musk, and David Sacks. US involved in resolution of international lawsuits? One Honduran prez pardoned, another calling the island of/by/for billionaires the creation of a narco-regime.
Is the Greenlandic “freedom city” going to be a more climate-friendly Prospera, once climate change moves in a bit more? No taxes, regulations that they control, and I’m guessing the Indigenous Peoples of Greenland won’t fare well.
https://information-warfare.com/pr%C3%B3spera-the-network-state-experiment-in-honduras-2936b58d3af2
Próspera: The Network State Experiment in Honduras
The city offers favorable tax rates, including a 1% tax on business revenue, 5% on wages, and a 2.5% sales tax. Additionally, Bitcoin is recognized as legal tender within Próspera.
The project is backed by Pronomos Capital, a venture capital firm supported by notable investors including Peter Thiel and Marc Andreessen.
In April 2022, Honduran President Xiomara Castro signed legislation to repeal the ZEDE framework, citing concerns over national sovereignty. Despite this, Próspera argues that existing agreements grant it legal stability for 50 years.
In September 2024, the Honduran Supreme Court declared the ZEDEs unconstitutional, raising questions about the legal standing of Próspera and similar entities.
In response to the repeal efforts, Honduras Próspera Inc. filed a $10.7 billion claim against the Honduran government, alleging violations of investor protections. This amount represents approximately one-third of Honduras’s GDP, highlighting the potential economic implications.
Local communities, particularly in the nearby village of Crawfish Rock, have expressed apprehension regarding Próspera’s expansion plans, fearing potential land expropriation and cultural displacement. Although Próspera’s charter disallows land expropriation, tensions persist.
Critics also view Próspera as an embodiment of “crypto-colonialism,” where foreign investors establish enclaves that operate independently of national laws, potentially undermining local governance and sovereignty.
Próspera is part of a broader ideological framework known as the “Network State,” popularized by figures like Balaji Srinivasan and funded through Pronomos Capital, a venture capital firm backed by Peter Thiel, Marc Andreessen, and others.
—> This concept envisions creating sovereign, tech-centric city-states globally that operate independently from national governments.
It draws inspiration from the “Dark Enlightenment” philosophy, which advocates for breaking away from traditional democratic governance to establish hierarchical, corporate-run societies.

https://www.vcinfodocs.com/unregulated-medical-experimentation
This has driven venture capitalists to seek roads around regulatory bodies through off-shore clinical trials, FDA-free “Network State” zones in the global south, and political maneuvering to gut regulatory bodies and medical agencies and infrastructure. Their backing of Trump’s second term is significantly motivated by their biotech ambitions, and their model of medical development – as for AI, weapons and crypto – is accelerationism.
In the first Trump administration, venture capitalists including Peter Thiel tried to get one of Jim O’Neill or Balaji Srinivasan appointed as head of the FDA. Srinivasan, evangelist of the Network State project, advocates for “the medical sovereignty zone, the FDA-free society” and advances “the absolute right for anyone to buy or sell any medical product without third party interference.”
These events document a long trajectory of venture capitalists aiming to compromise the FDA through government positions. These positions have now been secured in part because of Peter Thiel and Marc Andreessen’s support and funding of the Trump campaign.
As in other verticals venture capital focuses on — crypto, military and media — there are established monopolies within drug development and other parts of the medical system.
These biotech startups compete with the existing medical system in many different dimensions, and can be conceptualized in competition with existing medical bodies. Thus, we see venture capital developing perverse strategies to ensure the success of their investments.
Venture capital firms have lobbied the FDA for AI-friendly regulations. A 2024 paper, “Projected Growth in FDA-Approved Artificial Intelligence Products Given Venture Capital Funding”, concludes “FDA-approved AI products are expected to grow from 69 in 2022 to 350 in 2035 given the expected funding growth in the coming years. AI is likely to change the practice of diagnostic radiology as new products are developed and integrated into practice.
With their privileged position in the Trump administration, venture capital policies and strategies are now embedded in the FDA.
In 2017, venture capitalist and PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel financially supported an experimental herpes vaccine trial in St. Kitts, outside of US regulations. This off-shore experiment was performed without regulatory boundaries and little oversight; further, “the government of St. Kitts and Nevis says it was never notified of the trial, which experimented with live viruses on humans”. The trial was internationally condemned; “‘What they’re doing is patently unethical,’ said Jonathan Zenilman, chief of Johns Hopkin Hopkins Bayview Medical Center’s Infectious Diseases Division. ‘There’s a reason why researchers rely on these protections. People can die.’”
In 2019, Pronomos Capital was founded, with funding from Peter Thiel, Balaji Srinivasan, Marc Andreessen and Joe Lonsdale. Pronomos has funded a number of Network State sites – “new cities” and unregulated zones – with a primary goal to secure locations where they can host clinical trials without FDA or other regulatory oversight. Read more about the Network State here.
In Roatàn, Honduras, the Pronomos-backed Network State of Próspera has become a key site of venture capital clinical trials. They have adopted a permanent longevity and biohacking hub within Pròspera called Infinita, formerly Vitalia City.
Vitalia began as an extended “pop-up” city with conferences, summits and community gatherings centered around gene editing and unregulated medical experimentation. An investigative article from The New Republic explores the motivations of biohackers and the progression of Pròspera’s longevity city over the course of a year.
It doesn’t really sound like Greenland would be a US territory if the billionaires have their way, but a “network state,” unencumbered by US laws and regulations…not that all 50 aren’t losing grasp of those already.
Dark Enlightenment, also known as the Neo-Reactionary movement, is an anti-democratic and reactionary philosophical movement that opposes Enlightenment values like reason and equality. It advocates for a return to traditional forms of governance, such as absolute monarchy, and has gained traction among certain political and tech circles. -Wiki
Accelerationism is a range of ideologies that advocate for rapid capitalistic growth and technological development to hasten the collapse of the current societal structures. ICE policy on use of lethal force redacted as questions linger following Minneapolis ICE shooting
Just hours after a woman was shot and killed by an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent, the department’s use-of-force policy was redacted, nearly in its entirety.
The 2023 document has been the policy enforced by the agency and is consistent with the Department of Homeland Security’s document. But now there’s nothing on ICE’s website but a single paragraph.
As of Thursday, Jan. 8, the 13-page document is redacted — with the exception of the section that summarizes its purpose and background:
“Purpose/Background. This Directive establishes the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Firearms and Use of Force policy. This Directive assigns responsibilities for agency employees and, in conjunction with the ICE Firearms and Use of Force Handbook, establishes procedures and protocols concerning firearms and the use of force, including (but not limited to) training and proficiency, the reporting of use of force incidents, and the proper maintenance, storage, and accounting of firearms and intermediate force weapons.”
Beyond that opening paragraph, the remaining document is blacked out with red lettering that reads “(b)(7)(E)” — which means information is being withheld from FOIA because it “would reveal law enforcement techniques.”
However, a review of the document earlier in the day on Wednesday showed that the document was not redacted.
It included detailed information about how ICE agents are instructed to use force – and when.

It was pre-meditated. Getting filmed triggered him. He pulled his phone out to film them in weak-ass retaliation, and his soon-to-be victim told him that was fine and that she wasn’t bothered.
He walked around the van, holding his phone in his right hand. Her wife told him something to the effect of going to get himself some lunch. Ross then moved his phone to his left hand, walked around the front of the van, and took his gun out of the holster; he was standing well-away from the van, but in front of the driver. The other goon told her to get out and started pulling in her door handle, which is when she turned and started to slowly accelerate.
The first shot was fired through the windshield, but to the left side of the driver’s side.
Ross then walked to the open window and fired two shots, called her what angry men call women (he was angry, not afraid), and at that point the van accelerated (not toward where Ross had been in front of the van) to the direction of the turned wheels, until the van hit another car and a pole.
An EMR explained what happened to the body from some physical traumas like gunshots to the head. The body quickly straightens out and gets rigid; it doesn’t necessarily go limp. That’s why the van accelerated like it did.
There’s another video from an ICE goon getting in the face of a woman who was filming, and asked her if she learned nothing from what happened the other day, and then slapped the phone out of her hand.
A lot of white, straight men seem to think everyone is beneath them. Women are to be subservient. “Quiet, piggy.” That’s why they like that old-time religion, even though it is godless and Christ-less.
They need to give ICE candidates psych evaluations, and less-lethal rounds only.
Here’s my 12 minute protest reel from today’s livestream chat. I added a few scenes that I found since morning.

According to the 2025 enterprise AI adoption report by Writer, an agentic AI platform for enterprises, one in three workers say they’ve “actively sabotaged” their company’s AI rollout—a number that jumps to 41% of millennial and Gen Z employees. This can take the form of refusing to use AI tools, intentionally generating low-quality outputs, or avoiding training altogether.
Many act out because of fears that AI will replace their jobs, while others are frustrated by lackluster AI tools or unclear strategy from leadership.

“One side recommendation I have is: Don’t worry about squirreling money away for retirement in 10 or 20 years,” the Tesla and SpaceX CEO said during the latest episode of the “Moonshots with Peter Diamandis” podcast. “It won’t matter.”
“If any of the things that we’ve said are true, saving for retirement will be irrelevant,” Musk added.
The world’s richest man, whose net worth exceeds $600 billion, described a future where advances in AI, energy, and robotics supercharge productivity, creating an “abundance” of resources that would allow everyone to be granted a “universal high income.”

Musk Declares Human Death Could Be Beaten With ‘Extremely Solvable’ Longevity Breakthrough
Tesla chief argues body’s synchronised aging reveals simple path to extended life
‘I’ve long thought that longevity or semi-mortality is an extremely solvable problem,’ Musk said. ‘I don’t think it’s a particularly hard problem.’
Musk’s latest comments represent a dramatic reversal. In 2022, the entrepreneur told Insider he didn’t think society should pursue technologies enabling people to live significantly longer, warning it ‘would cause asphyxiation of society because the truth is, most people don’t change their mind’. ‘They just die. So if they don’t die, we will be stuck with old ideas and society wouldn’t advance,’ Musk said at the time.
Musk’s renewed interest in longevity places him alongside other tech billionaires who’ve poured millions into anti-ageing research, though his approach differs markedly. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has invested in Altos Labs, a start-up focused on cell revitalisation technology, whilst Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin launched Calico Labs to explore the causes. PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel and Oracle’s Larry Ellison have each donated millions to immortality research.
The convergence of artificial intelligence, genetic engineering and biotechnology may finally provide the tools needed to tackle what Musk describes as the ‘incredibly obvious’ puzzle of human ageing.
*This ‘making-death-optional’ thing is just a good, old-fashioned midlife crisis. All of these techbro billionaires are mid-fifties to early sixties which, I’d love to remind them, is far past mid-life for most humans.
If they actually cared about anything, they’d throw their month at clean water, air, food stability, medical care, and education (including the arts) for all. They don’t care, they just fear death.

anyone but me watching the Golden Globes tonight?
Broke down for Apple TV to watch Slow Horses. Do it, did it, done, and now we’re belatedly on to Ted Lasso.
PS: hate streaming
I love streaming just hate I can’t get all the shows I want from one source so to keep costs down I decide which ones aren’t that important.
Yes, Jamie.
Kudos to Jean Smart for using her red carpet time to talk about the situation in the country.
Will any of the winners use their time to speak up?
I’m sure several will have something to say, but their thank you time is kept so short it might not be possible.
Peacock subscription runs out in about 5 weeks. Only $30 for an entire year, so for that price it was worth it. To renew is over $100 and definitely not worth it.
Watched Ted Lasso when I had six, free months of Apple TV. It was so good that I bought the DVDs for the first, three seasons. I will wait until the 4th season of Ted Lasso is finished dropping to get Apple TV for one month and binge season four, plus some other stuff.
I have to have my Outlander, so Starz stays.

Peacock and Apple don’t have enough shows to make it worth the fees. I have TuneIn radio to get the audio for CNN & MSNOW as I wasn’t about to shell out $45 a month just to look at their faces.
I don’t look at any of the bills anymore.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell announced Sunday that the Department of Justice (DOJ) served the central bank with grand jury subpoenas on Friday, threatening a criminal indictment related to his congressional testimony about the Fed’s building renovations.
In a video statement released Sunday evening, Powell directly challenged what he characterized as politically motivated intimidation aimed at undermining the Fed’s independence in setting monetary policy.
Powell stated he will continue performing his duties despite the threats, declaring “public service sometimes requires standing firm in the face of threats.”
