Was NRA Leader Wayne LaPierre Deferred from Vietnam Due to a Nervous Disorder?

This image came across Facebook the other day, and I think it definitely helps explain LaPierre’s nutty actions. Unfortunately, there is no source reference given in this image. But hey, the wonderful thing about the internet is a simple search. So off to Google I go. But what I found completely shocked me…. I found almost nothing.

According to a few comments I found, LaPierre apparently pulled lottery #97 in 1969 as a campus radical at SUNY-Albany, but weaseled out by getting a family doctor to claim he had a nervous disorder. (According to a comment in a Snopes’ thread.)

The most information I could find was an article published online by The Miami Herald on July 25, 2012, called “The door has been slammed on gun debate.” That’s it. A few comment threads from people hearing about this info and looking for some sort of verification. Snopes just recently added this to their site as “Undetermined” probably due to that Snopes’ comment thread mentioned above asking if LePierre did receive this deferment.

above subject getting a lot of online activity….  is it true?

  2. He’s deranged. It doesn’t take an internet search to see that – it’s apparent every time he presents an address. He had a low draft number and did not answer his country’s call. This is not the stuff of the defender in chief of the right to bear arms IMHO having avoided the responsibility to bear arms.

  3. Conservatives complain about twitter takedown of ruskie bots.     fake flynn junior and other nazis complain that their follower base is eroded.  Who cares if they are fake?  “They were my friends!”   A shocked ‘junior’ states.   If followers are fake?  So are votes.   I cling to my 2016 election heist details.

Twitter has seemingly suspended thousands of suspected bot accounts, and some conservatives are claiming it’s a deliberate political crackdown, or “Twitter Lockout.” This morning, a number of right-leaning users complained about losing dramatic numbers of followers — including Michael Flynn, Jr., “alt-right” figurehead Richard Spencer, journalist Cassandra Fairbanks, and Infowars editor Paul Joseph Watson.

  4. Who cares if they are fake?  “They were my friends!”

bw, is this the adult version of having an imaginary friend?  even if it’s not so, let’s pretend we’re popular and people really really do like us? pathetic.

if they’re not there, no one will come

  5. Listening to White Stripes “Icky Thump” this morning.

“Why don’t you kick yourself out, you’re an immigrant, too.   Well, you can’t be a pimp & a prostitute, too.”

Icky Trump ain’t no pimp.  Pute-y is Donny’s pimp.

Now we know what Millenials will change. Everything.

All of this hate & fear-mongering is just the death rattle of the far right.

(Or those posing as fa’rters…many of them just hide behind those ideas (and the Bible) for the money/power.)

”Let love Rule” – Lenny Kravitz (my playlist is on-point this morning)

  6. From snopes…did the ruskie’s fund the nra to support trump?
The extent to which the FBI has evidence of money flowing from Torshin to the NRA, or of the NRA’s participation in the transfer of funds, could not be learned.
However, the NRA reported spending a record $55 million on the 2016 elections, including $30 million to support Trump – triple what the group devoted to backing Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential race. Most of that was money was spent by an arm of the NRA that is not required to disclose its donors.
Two people with close connections to the powerful gun lobby said its total election spending actually approached or exceeded $70 million. The reporting gap could be explained by the fact that independent groups are not required to reveal how much they spend on Internet ads or field operations, including get-out-the-vote efforts.

  7. conservatives are aggravating bullies with guns.

For the record, patd, I made-up the quote about ‘They were my friends (my clinging to humor).’   After reading several articles about twitter taking down the ruskie twitter bots and trump supporters reactions?  The true deplorables live in fantasyland, play with imaginary friends, live by conspiracies.  flynn ‘junior’ actually fanned the flames of pizzagate which brought a deranged young man to the parlor with an assault rifle to free children from the pedophile, Hillary.   They actually believe this crap.

More SFB’s in the nra and basket of deplorables than we knew.

  8. More on conservative outrage of twitter bot annihilation

Conservatives were enraged last month when activist James O’Keefepublished a series of undercover videos purporting to show Twitter engineers boasting of their ability to “shadow-ban” far-right users, or hide their tweets from appearing online. Those claims were quickly debunked, but fears that Twitter—an alleged bastion of Bay Area liberalism—is censoring conservative speech runs deep. They resurfaced on Wednesday, when several prominent right-wing users complained that they’d lost thousands of followers overnight, while others claimed to be locked out of their accounts. “Looks like thousands of Twitter users committed the thought crime of tweeting about ‘God,’ ‘the American flag,’ and ‘guns,’ were taken off the platform,” O’Keefe tweeted. “Our undercover reporting into Twitter showed those terms indicate to engineers you are ‘for sure a bot.’”

  9. This story has changed over the past few days…From wired, pro-gun ruskie bots flood internets after Parkland shooting.
“Over time the hashtag moves out of the bot network to the general public,” he says. Once a hashtag is widely adopted by real users, it’s difficult for Twitter to police, Bhat says. RoBhat Labs’ data shows this happened with the hashtag MemoDay, which bubbled up when House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes’ controversial memo was released.
In other cases, the bots jump on existing hashtags to take control of the conversation and amplify a message. That’s likely what is happening with the Parkland shooting and the hashtag guncontrolnow, Bhat says.

While RoBhat Labs tracks general political bots, Hamilton 68 focuses specifically on those linked to the Russian government.

  10. One clue of a bot or troll is to check their profile.  If you find they have been on Twitter for years but the number of tweets is small (one today on for 9 years but less than 300 tweets), it is probably a troll using a  stolen identity.  If they have a lot of tweets but very few followers, likely to be a robot that it getting retweeted through several identities.

  11. Interesting and scary.  This morning excerpts from LaPierre were played followed by virtually identical Trump statements.  Our President’s brain is so empty, he simply echoes talking points with no understanding of the subjects being discussed.

  12.

well, I see from the morning news Trump and the NRA have successfully pivoted the debate to school safety and armed teachers.

    Situation normal. Nothing gonna happen,

    Jack

  13. The bullying, brotopia is beginning to crumble under the 3rd wave of feminism which is also incorporating gun control as part of a human protections push.  It is about equality and the living humans reclaiming their rights of safety and promoting more than one amendment at a time.

However, today at cpac, the sfb potus and his sfb supporters can wallow in their cranial crap about guns and god and greatness.

  14. The conservatives, the repugs and their lobbyists will not give back their stolen power willingly during the 2018 midterms.   I expect our country to get more violent, divided and crazy this year.   The students of Parkland did a great thing for most Americans this week…where and when our media has failed.   They called bullshit on the nra and the repugs and the trumpence junta.   Finally, a voice for the sane side of the American house that has been muffled by the likes of suckabee and the mooch mouthpieces of the junta.

  15. perhaps there should be erected a hall of infamy to name names of those responsible for the murder and mayhem going on.  here’s a start
    from the guardian:

Meet the British expat CEO of the firm behind the gun that brought tragedy to Florida

James Debney is a member of the NRA’s Golden Ring of Freedom for donating over $1m to fight against gun control

As CEO of America’s second-largest gun manufacturer, James Debney – whose company made the assault rifle used last week to kill 17 people at a high school in Florida – makes $5.3m a year.

A second-amendment proselytizer Debney of American Outdoor Brands (formerly Smith & Wesson), has repeatedly made donations to political action committees opposing gun control in the United States.

And as a top donor to the National Rifle Association (NRA), Debney wears a distinctive gold blazer with a crest designating his membership in the group’s elite Golden Ring of Freedom society, reserved for million-dollar backers.

  16. unfortunately turned on news and was confronted with a foaming at the mouth speaker inciting a bloodthirsty crowd.

what a way to ruin an already gloomy rainy day

  17. the guardian quotes from last night:

“The national conversation continues to be how to keep our children safe from gun violence,” Stephen Colbert began. “Everyone acknowledges that this is a crisis, so for the president, the Republican party, and the NRA, every option is on the table except fewer guns.”

    [….]

“Now, obviously, all of this sound pretty grim, but Donald Trump has a message of hope,” Colbert said, before showing footage of Trump saying: “I think we need hardened sights. We need to let people know, ‘You come into our schools, you’re going to be dead.’”

    [….]

Addressing Trump’s suggestion of giving armed teachers bonuses, Noah said: “America really is a special place. For years, teachers have been asking for more pay and politicians have said they don’t have enough money, but now the president’s like, ‘If you’re willing to cap some fools, we’re gonna make it rain.’”
