  1. A young female walrus, nicknamed "Freya," rests on a boat in Frognerkilen, Norway, on July 19, 2022.

    NBC:

The walrus — whose name refers to the Norse goddess of fertility and love — rose to fame over the last few months as she traveled the country’s coastline, damaging boats and ships after having climbed aboard to rest for days or weeks at a time. She had been spotted as early as 2019, said Rune Aae, a doctoral student in science didactics at the University of South-Eastern Norway who mapped Freya’s journey through photos scientists and amateur photographers snapped and shared on social media and in online databases.
Aae criticized officials’ decision to put Freya to death in a Facebook post Sunday, calling the move “too hasty” and “completely unnecessary.” He said that there was enough tracking of Freya to ensure the public could avoid her and that there would be fewer onlookers when the summer holidays end soon.
Norwegian media outlets chronicled Freya’s travels this summer, and Norwegians flocked to the Oslo coast in recent weeks to watch her eat, sleep and rest. Adding to the attraction was the fact that walruses typically live in herds in the Arctic, making her solo presence off the capital — about 1,200 miles from where scientists believe she was from — all the more unexpected. No man is an island,
    Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
    A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
    Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
    Or of thine friend’s were.
    Each man’s death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
    Therefore, send not to know
    For whom the bell tolls,
    It tolls for thee.

  4. So, she wasn’t with a herd because humans destroyed her natural habitat and food chain…and then humans killed her over a little human-owned property damage.   Stupid, human tricks.

  5. https://www.energy-storage.news/worlds-first-large-scale-sand-battery-goes-online-in-finland/

“The 4×7 metre steel container contains hundreds of tonnes of sand which can be heated to a temperature of 500-600 degrees Celsius. The sand is heated with renewable electricity and stored for use in the local district heating system.”

“It has a particularly strong use case in Finland which sees long and very cold winters, and was recently cut off from Russian gas supplies over a payments dispute. The storage system’s developers say it is cheap and easy to build.”

Fortunately, not all humans are mean and stupid.

  6. They couldn’t catch and relocate Freya to a less populated area rather than euthanize her?  Goo goo ga joob.

  7. pogo, similar sentiments & suggestions in that guardian link cartoon article by 1st dog on moon

“how about close the marina for a few weeks? or hire a security guard? they could have crowdfunded it. send us money or the walrus gets it. i would have paid.”

  8. considering all the possible people that might have slipped info to FBI, here’s one…. might have been miffed about all those boxes taking up room in her closet.

by chance found this randy rainbow production of her back in 2018

  9. Too many boaters/sailors are idiots.  We who enjoy our lives on the water have to deal with them and it is not often fun.

A few of the social media pundits are pointing fingers at Kushy as the collector of documents.  It fits many holes, he read the daily briefings, he had access to the material, and he made twenty billion (that we know of) from the saudies.  And, prosecuting him will be a lot faster and easier than SFB.  SFB wouldn’t care.

  10. i’m reading about dipshit using coded language to foment civil conflict, which makes it hard to contrive outrage about a walrus

The local extremist yokels have been making displays of intimidation in my area. The good news is that i think their influence is waning, but any is bad

  11. Getting old sucks in so many ways.  Today the RMD, required minimum distribution, rose from the ooze once again.  Two years ago my mail had several letters informing me that I had to start having money pulled from my IRA’s.  A little over a month went by and the requirement was shifted a couple years forward.  Well, that is now.  Severe warnings about pulling so much from the accounts before December 31.  Okay, I do that.  Now it is time to also set up a yearly work with the brokerage.  Fine, do it.  But more pages of “information” to read and agree to.  Geez.  If the Congress can do one thing it should be to kill RMD for those of us who do not wish to receive ten dollars a year from an old depleted account.  It costs more to end the agony of that account than what is in it.

  12. So far none of the pundits and such on social media have brought up the less obvious, what about the other dens SFB inhabits?  I mean the other locations have room to stuff stuff.  He could be hiding another twenty file boxes under his lumpy mattress in New York City?  Or in the caddy room at the golf clubs he frequents?  Or even in the saudies spare palace?  Maybe Kushy has a box or two of the good stuff packed away in his closet?

  13. Who narced?  Did JarJar both take the docs for SFB/know where they were stored and give him up to the FBI to save his own hide?
