No wonder the GOP found Fraud. They looked in the mirror.

Nicole Wallace, Deadline White House:
“NBC News reports that Mark Meadows was registered to vote at an address that he never lived at. Documentation indicated he lived in Virginia and last voted in the 2021 election there, which would make his legislation in North Carolina against state law.”
Former Prosecutor and U.S. Senator from MO, Claire McCaskill:
“I’m dying. They registered at a double-wide trailer he never stepped foot in. It is fraud. You can’t register to vote in a place you’ve never stepped foot. His wife signed him up for a double-wide trailer — he was chief of staff for the president of the United States. Prosecute him. Put him in jail.”

  1. Former Trump aide Mark Meadows removed from North Carolina voter roll (nbcnews.com)

Mark Meadows, who was White House chief of staff in the Trump administration, was removed from the voter roll in North Carolina on Monday, the State Board of Elections confirmed.
The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the registration, spokesperson Anjanette Grube said. The office of Attorney General Josh Stein, a Democrat, requested the investigation last month after it was reported that Meadows, a Republican former member of Congress and Trump staffer, had registered using an address he never lived at.
    […]
News reports this year questioned whether Meadows, who has repeatedly and falsely claimed that widespread voter fraud occurred in the 2020 election, may have committed an election offense himself.
State records indicate that Meadows voted by absentee ballot in North Carolina in the 2020 general election after having registered in September at an address in Macon County. He was Trump’s chief of staff at the time.
    […]
The New Yorker reported that Meadows registered at a “mobile home” in Scaly Mountain, which the former owner said Meadows’ wife, Debbie Meadows, had rented and briefly visited. The magazine reported that neighbors and friends of the Meadows family said they had never visited and that the home was sold to Ken Abele, a retail manager at Lowe’s, before Meadows registered to vote there.
It is illegal to provide false information to register to vote in federal elections. North Carolina’s voter registration form asks voters for their “residential address — where you physically live,” underlining the word “physically.”

  2. Russia says warship ‘seriously damaged’ by explosion as Putin builds forces in east Ukraine | Ukraine | The Guardian

    […]
A Ukrainian official earlier said the Moskva had been hit by two anti-ship missiles but did not give any evidence.
“Neptune missiles guarding the Black Sea caused very serious damage to the Russian ship,” Maksym Marchenko, the governor of Odesa, wrote on Telegram.
The Moskva gained notoriety early in the war when it called on Ukrainian border troops defending the strategic Snake Island – a small outcrop in the Black Sea – to surrender, only to be defiantly refused.
Last month Ukraine said it had destroyed a large Russian landing support ship, the Orsk, on the smaller Sea of Azov to the north-east of the Black Sea. Moscow has not commented on what happened to the ship.
The military setback for Russia comes as Ukraine warned that Moscow was ramping up efforts in the south and east as it claimed to have seized full control of the besieged port of Mariupol.
“Rocket bombings and artillery strikes continue. New columns of equipment are being brought in,” Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in his nightly address.

  3. https://www.texastribune.org/2022/04/13/migrants-bus-texas-washington-dc/

“About 30 people from Colombia, Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua traveled to the U.S. capital as part of Gov. Greg Abbott’s new plan in response to the end of Title 42.”

    Thirty? ~OMG~

“On Tuesday, she took an offer from the state of Texas to be taken about 1,700 miles to Washington, D.C., for free. Now, a day later, she was about 200 miles away from her final destination. “Frankly, we did not have the money to get here otherwise, so we are very thankful for the help.”

I’ll bet Greg didn’t see that coming. He’s inadvertently helping some to their new life in the US.

“By busing migrants to Washington, D.C., the Biden Administration will be able to more immediately meet the needs of the people they are allowing to cross our border,” Abbott said in a Wednesday morning statement. “Texas should not have to bear the burden of the Biden Administration’s failure to secure our border.”

“Abbott’s office has released few details of the cost and extent of the bus operations and did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the matter.”

“The bus appeared to be operated by a North Carolina-based company called Elder Charters, according to a Fox News video of the bus’ arrival to Washington. The company declined to comment Wednesday and directed questions to Texas state officials.”

    I smell right-wing nuts.

  4. They can threaten nukes all they want.  One thing is they are cowards and would never put themselves at that risk.  Another thing is we can be pretty sure that ours actually work.  I’ve heard it said on many playgrounds before, “If you feeling froggy then jump”.

  5. https://www.texastribune.org/2022/04/13/greg-abbott-texas-border-inspections-nuevo-leon/

“Gov. Greg Abbott eases state inspections at one commercial bridge, as trade remains snarled across the border. The move provides little relief as trade between Texas and Mexico is hampered along the border because of Abbott’s order.”

“The move to ease Texas’ inspections at one of the 13 commercial crossings along approximately 1,200 miles of border the state shares with Mexico came after Abbott has been heavily criticized by the White House, Mexican federal and state governments and the American private sector about the inspections. Even fellow Republican Sid Miller, Texas’ agriculture commissioner, called on Abbott to reverse course, citing supply chain issues that he predicted would leave grocery store shelves empty. U.S. Customs and Border Protection, or CBP, which already conducts commercial inspections, has called the state inspections “unnecessary.”

“Abbott previously said the goal of the new inspection program is to seize narcotics and stop undocumented migrants from crossing into Texas. But neither Abbott nor the Texas DPS could point to any drug seizures or encounters with undocumented migrants when asked Wednesday about the success of the initiative. Instead, they pointed to hundreds of vehicle safety violations.”

Dumbass. Why just one bridge? What about the other 12 bridges? Why just this one?

“El Paso’s two commercial bridges reported four- to five-hour waits as of Wednesday afternoon. The average wait time is usually 10 to 30 minutes.”

    What a maroooon.

  6. Craig – one little line in a foreign news site is quite important, “cruise missile”.  The ship was one of the launchers of the cruise missiles used to destroy civilians and their homes.

  7.  I see that some of the capitol bldg insurrectionists are pleading “extreme and severe case of aggravated and aggressive dumbass” in their jury trials.

  8. looks like putin would rather have us believe they eff-d themselves as instructed then admit to ukraine doing it

    usnews via msn:

Russia’s Ministry of Defense said ammunition had exploded on Moskva as a result of “a fire,” according to the state news agency Tass. “As a result of a fire, ammunition detonated on the Moskva missile cruiser. The ship was seriously damaged. The crew was completely evacuated,” the ministry added.

  9. craig, looks like there’ll likely be more sunk ships when these get there:

One mystery on the list is an unspecified number and type of “unmanned coastal defense vessels” that the U.S. Navy will provide. Kirby described the drone heading to Ukraine only as “a surface vessel that can be used for a variety of coastal defense missions,” adding amid questions: “I assure you that they work.”

  10. Why is the new flagship of the Black Sea Fleet gonna be a glass-bottom boat?
So they can see the OLD flagship of the Black Sea Fleet.

    Re-cycling is good.

  11. newsweek:

Russian military chiefs have threatened to strike “decision-making centers” in Kyiv in retaliation for attacks it alleges Ukraine has carried out within its borders.
The chilling warning came during a briefing on Wednesday reported by Russian news agency Tass, when Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said: “We can see that Ukrainian forces are trying to conduct subversive activities and attack facilities in Russia. If such activities continue, the Russian Armed Forces will carry out strikes on decision-making centers, including those in Kyiv, which is what the Russian army has so far been refraining from doing.”
His statement marks the first time the Russian military has accused Ukrainian forces of carrying out attacks on Russian soil, according to the Moscow Times.
There has previously been speculation that Ukrainian special forces may have attacked key sites in a Russian city near the Ukrainian border, such as an oil depot and a railway line. But Ukraine has denied attacking the depot and has not accepted responsibility for destroying the train tracks. There were no victims reported in either incident.
Further muddying the waters, Ukraine’s military intelligence chief warned this week of his fears that Russia could stage terrorist attacks against itself in order to blame Kyiv and build support at home for the war against Ukraine.
In a Facebook post on Monday, Major General Kyrylo Budanov, who serves as head of the intelligence department at Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense, wrote, “Russian intelligence services are planning a series of terrorist attacks with mining and undermining residential buildings, hospitals and schools in Russian settlements.”

  12. LOVE the news about the Ukrainians!

When the invasion first started… I told myself not to hate the Russian people…  just the regime.  I no longer hold that perspective.  Fuck the Russians!

  13. RR – I come from a long line of those with a great distaste of the vulgar (Venäjän in Finnish) beasts. KGB agent Puttie has been shifting more resources to the border, probably the units that refuse to go to Ukraine hoping Finland will be kinder. That is a joke. They are transferred to the Finnish border as punishment.

  14. So Ukraine is claiming they hit the ship with home grown cruise missile tech. If true then it begs the question, Just how good is Russian tech.
From a good BBC article (go read it)

“Essentially, you’d have thought that with that three-tiered anti-air defence system it would be very hard to hit,” the military expert added.

Now Russia is claiming that it was a result of a fire.
    OK.
You would rather admit that your navy is totally incompetent and let a fire breakout in the ammo locker. Hah!
    Jack

  15. From the Task and Purpose military blog an interesting article about Russian tank design. They are basically a suicide mission waiting to happen and unlike American tank design there was no thought of crew survivability.

“Our combat power is our people. On the other hand, if you look at Russia – because they had the Warsaw Pact, the Soviet Union, they had subjugated all those states after World War II – they knew that they had the numbers. For them, it was more of quantity is quality – mass-produce tanks in an efficient, cost-effective timeline in order for them to then push those tanks out to their formations so they could mass in case of World War III. So, their priority was lethality vs. survivability.”

  16. craig,

i wholeheartedly support Jack’s suggestion for a new picture.  Would you, if you think it’s not being disrespectful, exchange the flag painting at the thread’s top with this — at least for a couple of days to celebrate the sinking of the flagship and the reputation of its country?

  17. Russia’s oil output dropped the most in almost two years in early April as some buyers looked elsewhere for their energy supplies following the invasion of Ukraine

  18. and a little celebratory music to go along with it

vid was posted to youtube by therealbobbymcferrin who wrote this:

Re-sharing this deeply moving video clip shows what seems to be a Ukrainian military band performing “Don’t Worry Be Happy” as they await a Russian attack on Odessa. We can’t vouch for the authenticity of this video that was originally found posted on Reddit March 8, 2022 around 8am Eastern time and reposted here.

to which one of the commenters wrote: “The indomitable spirit of the Ukrainian people is incredible. This brought tears to my eyes. Peace and Slava Ukraini!”

another wrote: “As a Turkish citizen, I’m proud of Ukrainian people. They showed the world how to love and defend to the last blood your country. my heart is with you.”

  19. Of course the cause of the fire that got the Russian ammo locker could have been a Ukrainian cruise missile  and to appear that they are right the Russians just kind of omit that small detail.

  20. Pogo – it could have really been a russian fire.  They lose a lot of vessels due to fires, submarines, air craft carriers, etc.  Losing the moscow could have been the crew drinking alcohol from various systems and it caught on fire.

  21. Da, you sunk my battleship.

And now Ukrainians have blown up a bridge full of Russians. Ta-Da!

    https://www.cnn.com/europe/live-news/ukraine-russia-putin-news-04-14-22/index.html

“Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny has issued a series of tweets urging a new front of “truth and free information” against Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he calls the “war criminal from the Kremlin.”

“Navalny, who is serving a nine-year sentence in a Russian penal colony after being convicted of fraud last month, said in his tweets that “truth and free information hit Putin’s insane regime just as hard as Javelins,” the US anti-tank weapons being used by Ukrainian forces against Russian armor.”

“Even if such advertising is bought for the full commercial price, its cost will be laughable compared to the price of this war,” Navalny said, adding: “One shot from Javelin costs $230,000. For the same money we would get 200 million ad views in different formats and provide at least 300,000 link clicks or at least 8 million views on a video with the truth about what is happening in Ukraine.”

  22. BB, I don’t discount that the fire could have been a result of Russian incompetence but I don’t discount the possibility that it could have been a result of Ukrainian competence.

  23. Second snowfall in a week in April in Washington.  It’s not sticking, but cold and wet is not a good thing this time of year.  Hope those south of us get the benefit of the water.

  24. Pogo, BB
Neither one of them is something you want to admit to if you are Russia.
BTW, I only believe about half of the stuff put out by either Ukraine or Russia and I may be giving both of them more than they are due.
    Jack

  25. It is pouring down rain in eastern Ukraine. That means the heavy armor is just about useless but Manpad  weapons can manuver just fine. My trip across Kansas last week, they are saying Eastern Ukraine is like Kansas. There is a lot of uneven ground in Flat country. Perfect for small group infantry to strike and hide. Terrible for heavy armor that can’t get off the 2 lane roads.

  26. I only believe about half of the stuff put out by either Ukraine or Russia

…some of the one, none of the other.   Russian politicians would lie about the time of day

    Kinda like trumpistanis

  27. Putin’s defence minister Sergei Shoigu has had ‘massive heart attack’ and allegedly not from natural causes

I win the pool.  I said heart attack/never returns.  That video of him a couple weeks ago was a fake.

Ukraine can now add another ship to the russian stuff destroyed:
Russian MoD via TASS: “During the towing of the Moskva cruiser to the port of destination, the ship lost its stability due to damage to the hull received during the fire from the detonation of ammunition. In the conditions of stormy seas, the ship sank.”

  28. I’m pretty sure that the Ukrainians built that cruise missle from scratch from old rainbarrels with duct tape and vice grips.   And it sunk that battleship.

  29. They eat their own.   Where is the one, brave Russian who can put a stop to all of this by taking out Vlad?   Many must want to do it.

  30. Speaking of Boats…Wapo

The shipbuilder behind the world’s largest yacht by tonnage describes it as “one of the most complex and challenging yachts ever built,” with “entertainment and recreation spaces never before seen on” such a vessel, and an interior of “rare and exclusive luxury materials.”

It has two helipads and the largest yacht pool ever built, and it can accommodate 36 guests and 96 staff. And this week, it was impounded by German authorities for its ties to a Russian oligarch.

Germany’s federal police said Tuesday that “through extensive investigations despite offshore concealment,” it found that the yacht is owned by Gulbakhor Ismailova, the sister of Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov.

After police confirmed with Brussels that the vessel’s owner was sanctioned, the superyacht — named Dilbar, after Usmanov’s mother, according to the U.S. Treasury Department — was impounded. It is being held in the Port of Hamburg in Germany.
    * * *

The Dilbar, the yacht impounded in Germany, is registered in the Cayman Islands, according to the Treasury Department, and worth between $600 million and $735 million, with an estimated annual running cost of $60 million.

There are larger yachts by length. But at 15,917 tons, the Dilbar is the world’s largest yacht by internal volume, according to the ship’s maker, Lürssen, which touts its “classic profile with a light ivory hull and bronze accents.”
    * * *

Who pays to maintain an impounded “world’s largest yacht” at just over $1M per week?

  31. https://www.cnn.com/2022/04/14/politics/rnc-withdraws-from-presidential-debates/index.html

“The Republican National Committee voted unanimously on Thursday to withdraw from its participation in the Commission on Presidential Debates, the organization that has long governed general-election presidential debates. In a statement, RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said the commission is “biased…”

“In June 2021, McDaniel sent a letter outlining several complaints about the commission’s practices, reflecting former President Donald Trump’s concerns about the conduct of the 2020 debates.”

“The commission drew considerable ire from Trump during the 2020 campaign, with him and his campaign aides often railing about the selected moderators, the commission’s decision to hold the second debate virtually during the coronavirus pandemic and the choice to mute each candidate’s mic during the final debate after the first contest included considerable interruptions from the then-President.”
