  1. thread topic linked above. here’s the op ed that went with the ‘toon by David Horsey at the Seattle Times:

IN THE NEWS: The Trump administration’s crusade to disassemble the federal government is now targeting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration by firing a fourth of NOAA’s employees because, after all, why would Americans benefit from scientific research to support the U.S. fishing industry, forecast the weather, warn about impending storms and track the effects of climate change?

like maybe now? severe weather is hitting the country coast to coast today and tomorrow.

  2. President Trump threatened 200% tariffs on wine from Europe, the new EPA head wants to roll back regulations that protect us from pollution, and people are stealing the wheels off Teslas and turning Cybertrucks into skate ramps.

  3. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/scoop-trump-crafts-plan-cut-spending-without-congress-after-shutdown-averted

SCOOP: Trump crafts plan to cut spending without Congress after shutdown is avertedTrump and his allies believe the Impoundment Control Act is unconstitutional

But the promise of Trump using Congress’ funding allocations as a ceiling and not a floor ultimately played a big part in convincing conservatives.

“We appropriate, that’s an important principle. But then the chief executive can make decisions below that spending level. The chief executive can say, ‘Hey, this isn’t the best use of money,’” Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, told Fox News Digital in an interview this week.

So, essentially like a spending freeze, which I believe was found to be illegal?

  4. https://www.newsweek.com/veterans-march-washington-defend-constitution-what-know-2042764

“Veterans are planning to march on Washington DC in order to defend the Constitution and the oath they swore to it.”

“When individuals join the armed forces or take an oath of office as a politician, they swear to protect the U.S. Constitution from “all enemies, foreign and domestic.” The participants of this march see it as their responsibility to speak out against what they perceive as unconstitutional actions by the Trump administration.”

    The significance of today, 3/14:

Section 3 of the 14th Amendment prohibits individuals who have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States from holding public office.

  5. Sturg – That’s the main number under the graphic of solid NOs and spineless weasels. Schumer’s office has no message line after hours, so call when the store opens.

Just as cracks are starting to show in Republicans getting blowback at town halls, Chuck goes and effs it up. Super disappointed by others on the list.

Called Fetterman & Slotkin in the wee hours, as well as my Republican Senators.

  6. “Republicans run the House, the Senate, and the White House. You run the government. If you have the votes, then go ahead. If you need Democrats, then you need to negotiate with Democrats. Those are your two options. Blaming someone else because your shoes are untied isn’t one.“ -Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

So, why Chuck Schumer and others want to capitulate is beyond me.

  7. Hope that the Dems just vote “no” and tell the old guy to sit down or go home. There is one question of how many repubs/magats vote “no”.

  8. AOC should run against Schumer.

He’s not up to the challenge of asymmetrical warfare.

If he was going to fold all along just do it early. Don’t repeatedly signal you’re going to fight when you aren’t.

House GOP clearly knew he would cave, passed their obnoxious bill and went home.

  9. Let’s face it, about all Chuck Schumer has been good for through the years is getting Wall Street money for Democrats. A good thing? Maybe won us some seats we wouldn’t have gotten, but not really worth it in the long run.

  10. WaPo just reporting that Alan Simpson has died at 93.

Pushing the 1986 immigration reform bill through Congress — his major legislative accomplishment — was like “giving dry birth to a porcupine,” he quipped

Not enough like him in Congress these days.

  11. BiD, saw your comment on the blood moon and burn pile last night. I have 3 large trees – a 100′ + pine and a couple of 8-10″ diameter hardwoods of some description – that blew down in the back yard in past month that are going to make one hell of a burn pile if I can get the clutch on my chainsaw fixed.

  12. There were some notes yesterday that krasnov asked for plans to invade Panama. He has already threatened Canada and Denmark with military invasion but nothing has popped up about making plans.

The issue is would the U.S. military tell him “NO” and take him down? Would any others do the same? 25 45/47? Would an insane idiot be allowed to invade an friendly country?

  13. BB, fun fact – Greenland is about 1/4 the land area of the contiguous 48 states and has half the population of Tuscaloosa, AL.A metropolitan statistical area in the US is 56,000 or more. The smallest such area is Carson City, which has about the same population as Greenland.

  14. Greenland was one of a handful of USAF bases most of us did not want to go, WhyNot Minot, North Dakota, Thule Greenland, Johnson Island, Middle of Nowhere Pacific Ocean, Diego Garcia, Nowhwere Indian Ocean, and anything above the Arctic Circle (plus a few more that few people ever heard of) Except for Minot all were short tours, same as Vietnam and Korea, except people tried to kill you in Nam.

  15. https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/2039/all-info

“H.R.2039 – To prohibit the President and the Secretary of Health and Human Services from declaring certain emergencies or disasters for the purpose of imposing gun control.”

Ha! A Republican is afraid that Don-Old does intend dictatorship, and will take away everyone’s Second Amendment tchotchkes. Can’t have a fascist state when a lot of folks who might want to uphold the US Constitution are armed.

  16. https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/5194773-trump-schumer-government-funding/

“Congratulations to Chuck Schumer for doing the right thing — Took ‘guts’ and courage! The big Tax Cuts, L.A. fire fix, Debt Ceiling Bill, and so much more, is coming. We should all work together on that very dangerous situation. A non pass would be a Country destroyer, approval will lead us to new heights,” Trump wrote on Trump Social.

    WTF, Chuck!?!

  17. can you even imagine the insider trading that’s going on with these market manipulators at the highest level?

    i can

    it’s a fucking heist

  18. bId – I suppose that when you try something, in a country with more guns than people, you should do something other than try to take those guns. I cannot imagine any of the people I know who would vote for, but not like, krasnov willingly handing over their babies. I cannot imagine any people I know who do have weapons willingly handing them over to the fascists. That is on all sides of the aisles of political life.

  19. “The spending plan that Republicans put forward that we’re debating includes funding cuts for hospitals, schools, child care centers, and veterans.
But that’s not all. This bill will also essentially give Donald Trump a blank check too — one that removes the guardrails from Congress on how he should spend taxpayer funds.
So perhaps Trump and Musk want to shovel $75 million of ALS treatment funding over to anti-vaccine research instead. This Republican bill says that’s okay.
And say Trump and Musk decide to fire another 25,000 veterans or kick one million old people out of nursing homes. This Republican bill says that’s okay.
Republicans are refusing to sit at the negotiating table with Democrats to work on a spending plan in good faith.
They are saying they’ll vote to keep the government open only if we cut money for these critical programs and give Donald Trump more unchecked power.
So I’m voting NO on the Republican shutdown bill.
NO on handing Donald Trump and Elon Musk a blank check to spend your taxpayer money however they want.
NO on cutting funding that helps families put food on the table and crack down on wealthy tax cheats.
Make no mistake: Republicans are forging ahead with their plan to shut down the government.
They don’t care about the consequences it will have on you or your family.”

Senator Elizabeth Warren’s email re: why she’s a NO vote on this CRappy bill.

The Republicans are planning to shut down the government permanently, and set up agencies to fund the billionaires and keep a version of tRUMPutin in power for eternity.

This is the ONLY leverage we have right now.

  20. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/democrats-target-republican-districts-with-town-hall-campaign-against-trump-cuts/ar-AA1AVWb8

“Democrats plan a series of town hall meetings in highly competitive U.S. House of Representatives districts currently held by Republicans, aiming to tap into anger over President Donald Trump’s campaign to aggressively slash the federal government.”

So, then maybe a NO vote would be helpful, as opposed to giving away the farm in the CRappy GOP bill! Otherwise, Dems are aiding and abetting the Republican/MAGAt abusers.

What’s going to happen if Dems go along with Repugz on this bill, and then go to town halls expecting to make inroads after they went along with the harm this bill will cause them?

    FFS!

  21. https://thehill.com/homenews/house/5195180-pelosi-schumer-government-funding/

Pelosi shades Schumer on funding bill: ‘Listen to the women’

“Democratic senators should listen to the women,” Pelosi said. “Appropriations leaders [Rep.] Rosa DeLauro [D-Conn.] and [Sen.] Patty Murray [D-Wash.] have eloquently presented the case that we must have a better choice: a four-week funding extension to keep government open and negotiate a bipartisan agreement.”

“America has experienced a Trump shutdown before – but this damaging legislation only makes matters worse. Democrats must not buy into this false choice. We must fight back for a better way. Listen to the women, For The People,” Pelosi said.

Why in the heck won’t he listen?

Just went through my call log; I’ve called Senators (usually just mine, but not always), and my Representative a total of 83 times since February 17th.

  22. Chuck should resign now! Governor Hochul can appoint AOC to fill his spot.

Jeffries is never going to be SOTH after his weak performance. Jasmine Crockett & AOC have taken the lead in the House.

  23. https://www.newsweek.com/veterans-protest-donald-trump-dc-capitols-cuts-2044703

The “NowDC” march at the National Mall, organized by Fourteenth Now, is also calling for Trump to be removed from the White House over claims that he is an “insurrectionist” due to his alleged actions in and around the January 6 riot at the Capitol in 2021.

Friday’s march in Washington, D.C, will also protest the “purging” of veteran employees as part of the Trump administration’s cost-cutting measures led by Elon Musk‘s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Similar calls to protest the Trump administration’s cuts to veteran services at every state capitol across the country are being promoted online.

*Will it be shown on the evening news? If so, will it be a little bumper blurb between commercials or will they actually give it 2 minutes? Will that time instead go to an “orphan crushing machine” story. I only recently learned that term, but I always disliked the tragic story that is supposed to be a happy story because there was some good resolution to it; it would’ve been better if it hadn’t happened at all.

  24. Sturg, I can tell you for an absolute fact it’s Schumer’s ties to Wall Street that got him there and keep him there. I know Democrats who were way behind in their Senate races until Schumer green lighted Wall Street donors and overnight they were flush with cash, got elected and owed him their seats. It really is that simple.

  25. It’s all happening. Needs to be stopped ASAP.
Where is/are the Anonymous group(s), and can they help shut this down?

  26. https://apnews.com/article/mehmet-oz-senate-medicare-medicaid-health-programs-ea693a51ae213f7a1341642af4b01056

Dr. Mehmet Oz promised senators on Friday to fight health care fraud and push to make Americans healthier if he becomes the next leader of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Democrats, meanwhile, tried to pin him down on potential cuts to the state- and federally funded Medicaid program that Republicans are considering.

But the former heart surgeon and TV personality dodged several opportunities to say broadly whether he would oppose cuts to Medicaid, the government-funded program for people with low incomes.

*The grey hair is supposed to make him look more, what, wise? He’s a huckster like the rest of them.

  27. My mom was a nurse who took care of hospital patients of Dr. Oz’s father who was also a thoracic surgeon. She thought highly of him. The first time she saw Dr. Oz junior on Oprah, she leaned forward, squinting at the screen, that’s Doctor Oz’s kid. The father used to take him on hospital rounds so mom had seen him plenty of times.

Chuck Schumer wrote a book. Chuck is doing a book tour. Go, see Chuck. Should be wild. He brought it on himself. (Craig – I’d love to know the decibel level of the boos at Politics & Prose.)

  29. Craig – how much of a hit would the Dems voting no and killing the make krasnov a dictator bill be to Schumer?

  30. BiD, i really do suspect anything nefarious with Schumer. He’s stuck in the old rules of engagement, can’t wrap his head around dealing with genuine fascists.

  31. Tumbleweeds, trash and red hats are blowing fiercely across the edge of the prairie today. Lots of good wind-power for the turbines.

Tumbleweeds are the detritus of Russian Thistle. Figures, another Putin sharp stick in the eye.

Tumbleweeds begin their lives as little green shrubs called Salsola tragus, aka Russian thistle. There are several other species that turn into “tumbleweeds,” but this particular one is an icon of the American West.

  32. Today, tumbleweeds are a quintessential part of the American West, appearing in Western moviessongs and traditions. But the tumbleweed, like many of the people who live out West, are not descendants of true U.S. natives. They arrived as invaders from Russia around 1870 and have been impossible to get rid of since.

The weeds first arrived in Scotland, South Dakota, likely in seed form in a batch of flaxseed imported from Russia, Zocalo reports. Just 15 years later, the tumbleweed (also called the Russian thistle) had rolled its way to both Canada and California. Since then, stories abound of “tumbleweeds driving ranchers out of their homes through sheer abundance,” Zocalo writes.

The tumbleweed bane is hardly a thing of the past, however. In particularly bad years, often coupled with strong winds or storms, tumbleweeds still plague plains towns. One town in New Mexico, for example, was recently buried in tumbleweeds.

  33. BTW, thought the omelet was a nice idea – of course 14 minutes to cook one would require that the lazy man needs to be a patient man, too. Unfortunately, I’m really not.

  34. These are the Dem dipsh/ts who just voted with the fascists. Vote with the fascists and it means you are a fascist, too. They are fascists. They just handed tRUMPutin & Musk EVERYTHING!

So long to SNAP, veterans’ benefits, Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and any other social safety net. May they never have a moment of peace, nor a good night of sleep. I hope they know they just cooked themselves.

JFC! Why can’t Dems do anything right? Moscow Mitch wouldn’t have let this sh/t happen.

Again, how are Dems who were planning to hold town halls in red districts supposed to make any inroads when they (their party) couldn’t get organized enough to keep everyone on the same page to protect Social Security?

  35. https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/5195990-senate-democrats-advance-funding-bill/

The Democrats who voted to advance the measure were: Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (Ill.) and Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), John Fetterman (D-Pa.), Gary Peters (D-Mich.), Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), and Angus King (Maine), an independent who caucuses with Democrats.

They joined every Republican except Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who voted against the measure.

Peters and Shaheen have announced they will retire at the end of their current terms.

*FFS! They are retiring & they wanted this to be their legacy!?!

  36. https://www.reuters.com/world/us/johns-hopkins-university-slashes-2000-jobs-after-trump-administration-grant-cut-2025-03-13/

The Johns Hopkins University said on Thursday it will slash over 2,000 jobs in the U.S. and abroad after the administration of President Donald Trump terminated $800 million in grants to the renowned academic institution.

It marked the biggest layoff in the university’s history and involved 247 domestic U.S. workers for the academic institution and another 1,975 positions outside the U.S. in 44 countries.

This is a difficult day for our entire community. The termination of more than $800 million in USAID funding is now forcing us to wind down critical work here in Baltimore and internationally,” the university said in a statement shared with media.

11 Arrested at DC Office Demanding Schumer ‘Stand With Working People’
“Instead of standing with young and everyday people, Schumer is compromising on our lives and futures,” said an 18-year-old who was arrested at the protest.

The protesters carried banners and signs with messages that included, “Schumer: Step Up or Step Aside,” “Schumer: Don’t Be a Coward,” and “Our Future Is on Fire, Act Like It Is.” The protesters echoed those messages.

Protesters who gathered at Schumer’s home in New York City Friday morning shared similar messages, holding signs that said, “People Over Billionaires,” “Schumer, Vote No or Go,” and “Schumer: Do Not Comply in Advance, Say No to Cloture.”

“I Wish AOC Was My Senator,” read one sign, a reference to growing calls for Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez(D-N.Y.) to launch a primary challenge against Schumer.

The demonstration at Schumer’s Brooklyn residence was organized by a local arm of the progressive group Indivisible.
The protest was “a testament to how many people are upset,” Indivisible Brooklyn organizer Lisa Raymond-Tolan toldSalon, noting that hundreds of people “came out at 8 o’clock in the morning on a weekday to let the senator know that he is off course and capitulating to fascism—and we won’t stand for it.”
“He is not the leader for this moment,” Raymond-Tolan told the crowd, according to Salon. “We need him to fight back or get the fuck out.”

  39. https://www.politico.com/news/2025/03/14/trump-doj-speech-prison-opponents-00231438

President Donald Trump on Friday walked into the Department of Justice and labeled his courtroom opponents “scum,” judges “corrupt” and the prosecutors who investigated him “deranged.”

With the DOJ logo directly behind him, Trump called his political opponents lawbreakers and said others should be sent to prison.

No president has ever given a speech at the Department of Justice like that, where he railed against his political foes and summoned up an agenda for totally political, partisan prosecution,” Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said. “It was an absolute desecration of the culture and history of the Department of Justice.”

Raskin also ridiculed Trump’s description of those charged in the Capitol riot as political prisoners. “He called the insurrectionists today political prisoners, like Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn or Nelson Mandela. What a joke,” the lawmaker said.

Trump also used his visit to offer an effusive tribute to U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, who issued a ruling that tossed out the classified documents case against him.

*Tomorrow is March 15th. Just sayin’

  40. Trump at the DOJ today in full dictator mode: “I believe that CNN and MSNDC, who literally write 97.6% bad about me, are political arms of the Democrat Party. And in my opinion, they are really corrupt and they are illegal. What they do is illegal.”

Avoiding her question around Gaza, he responded laughingly saying, “She made television tonight, she just became a big story tonight, right?”

  43. Maybe Russia takes back Alaska and Canada becomes the new 50th state.

How did the veterans’ protests go today? I have to go looking for any meaningful coverage of protests. The mainstream media isn’t showing much. The exception being the protesters who had a sit in at tRUMP Tower.
    That made the evening news.
