  3. Wiki on the Matejko painting:

Stańczyk has been described by the Warsaw National Museum as one of the most recognizable paintings in its collection, and is a flagship painting for the “Collection of Polish paintings prior to 1914”. Its primary component is the contrast between the solemn Stańczyk (a historical Polish court jester and the painting’s namesake) and the lively ball in the background. The painting presents Stańczyk with a sense of isolation and hopelessness, which reflects the political situation of Poland during the 19th century.

Stańczyk remains an important symbol of Polish culture. Stańczyk embodied satire to criticize social problems while also offering wisdom to the common people. His character is remembered and is a proud part of Polish national character. The painting has created an image of Stańczyk that has become iconic and widely recognized in Poland.

  4. Anthony Newley’s iconic song – from his & Leslie Bricusse’s 1961 musical show “Stop The World – I Want To Get Off”, here the US Broadway version, 1962
He played Littlechap, the little, cheeky but fragile clown, who shows us world and life as a permanent circus in which we all play our part !
In my opinion is this the archetypus of every Newley character that followed, from Cocky, Merkin to Chaplin !
“…What kind of Clown Am I, what do I know of life !
Why can’t I cast away this mask of play and live my life…!
I framed this incredible, remarkable song with excerpts from “The Lucy Show – Lucy in London” 1966, Federico Fellini’s “the Clowns” 1971 .
I also used the reconstruction of Vaslav Nijinsky’s dance to Igor Strawinsky’s ballet “Petrushka” from 1911, beautifully danced by Georges de la Pena (from Herbert Ross’ film “Nijinsky”, 1980)

  8. In the 14th century, the name “Thome Fole” referred to a court jester performing at the Durham Abbey in northern England. It’s unclear if “Thome Fole” was the performer’s given or stage name, or simply a generic moniker applied to jesters and other silly-minded court performers of the time.

We do know that as Middle English evolved into Modern English in the mid-17th century, the spelling of “Thome Fole” became “tomfool.” At first, “tomfool” was primarily used as a noun referring to “a great fool,” but by the mid-18th century it came to be used as an adjective meaning “extremely foolish,” as in “that was a tomfool stunt.”

  9. Bid — Silas sez:

    The April Fool’s Presidential Address

Historically, commanders-in-chief dodge April 1st for national addresses. When your job description includes holding the nuclear launch codes, you generally prefer your major policy shifts to not be mistaken for a whoopee cushion.

The closest the Oval Office usually gets to an April 1st address is a literal gag. On April 1, 2013, the Obama administration hyped a “special video message from the president,” only to have 9-year-old “Kid President” hijack the briefing room, yell “April Fools on all y’all,” and exit to a chorus of fart sound effects.

Lyndon B. Johnson had the decency to drop his bombshell announcement that he wouldn’t seek reelection on March 31, 1968, merely letting the sheer shock of the news marinate in the April Fool’s Day morning papers.

But history is outdoing itself today. Tonight, April 1, 2026, at 9:00 PM ET, President Trump is scheduled to deliver a live primetime address to the nation providing an update on the ongoing “military operations” in Iran.

Scheduling a high-stakes war update on the universal day of pranks is certainly a choice, but here is the absurdist silver lining: reality has officially lapped satire, and we all get a front-row seat to the spectacle.

  17. I’ve been following the birthright citizenship argument as WP & NYT are reporting who’s asking who what. Dangerous to draw too much of an inference from questions asked of the lawyers. I will say that Sauer’s interpretation of “subject to the laws thereof” being tied to domicile or indicia of intent to remain here strikes me as stupid. That would be applicable to the parents in an immigration court about their own immigration status perhaps, but the 14th applies to the child. Wang’s handling of that issue and the issue of domicile strikes me as much more reasonable than Sauer’s.
    I did find this funny:

Trump left the Supreme Court when Solicitor General D. John Sauer finished his argument, a court spokesperson said. The presidential motorcade returned to the White House, passing tourists who offered a range of gestures.

Yep, I’ll bet he got a mix of gestures as he departed. Keep an eye peeled for his TS analysis. I’m sure it will be insightful.~~~

  18. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/supreme-court/trump-birthright-citizenship-supreme-court-native-american-rcna263223

In a moment that could take on new significance almost 150 years later, Omaha election official Charles Wilkins on April 5, 1880, refused to register John Elk to vote on the grounds that he was Native American, and therefore not an American citizen.

Elk — believed to have been a member of what is now known as the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska — objected, saying he had severed all ties with his tribe and had willingly subjected himself to the authority of the United States.

He launched a legal challenge, arguing among other things that he was a citizen at birth because he was born within United States territory.

But the Supreme Court, in an 1884 case called Elk v. Wilkins, ruled against him, saying that Native Americans born within the territory of the United States did not have birthright citizenship. They had the same status as “the children of subjects of any foreign government born within the domain of that government,” the court said.

President Donald Trump’s administration is now citing that case as it defends his plan to end automatic birthright citizenship, putting a new spin on the long-standing interpretation of the Constitution’s 14th Amendment. The Supreme Court hears oral arguments in the case on Wednesday.

Trump’s executive order, issued on the first day of his second term, seeks to limit birthright citizenship only to people with at least one parent who is a U.S. citizen or a legal permanent resident.

Solicitor General D. John Sauer, representing the government, referenced Elk in court papers, saying the Supreme Court has “squarely rejected the premise that anyone born in U.S. territory, no matter the circumstances, is automatically a citizen so long as the federal government can regulate them.”

White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said in a statement that the case gives the Supreme Court the chance to “restore the meaning of citizenship in the United States to its original public meaning.”

The Trump administration’s arguments about the relevance of the Elk ruling are strongly contested by the American Civil Liberties Union, which is leading the challenge to Trump’s executive order.

“At a fundamental level, this case is about an attempt to strip citizenship from the children of immigrants who have always been citizens of the U.S. The Native American questions the government raises are really beside the point,” ACLU lawyer Cody Wofsy said in an interview.

  22. BiD, Sauer must not be aware of the 1924 Indian Citizenship Act. The Indian Citizenship Act of 1924 (Snyder Act), signed on June 2, 1924, granted citizenship to all Native Americans born in the U.S. I’ve seen it in at least 4 articles over the last week in the NYT and WaPo.

  25. Anon – Last year, I just used sticks to shore up my tomatoes and let the cukes run wild amongst them. Worked well because they didn’t get sunburnt, but they were also hard to find. A lot of things in the picture are zucchini and spaghetti squash.

ps – Not seen in my chili recipe picture: One spoonful of tomato paste from the freezer, and a can of diced tomatoes from the downstairs pantry. I’m filling the pantry for the apocalypse.

The rapture is made up, but the apocalypse will be real.

The coasters are too hard on my c-spine now and the lines too hard on my knees, so I’ve got my excuses to avoid the place. Oh, and although the ticket prices aren’t all that much in comparison to when we went 14 years ago ($100 +/- per day -about twice what we paid if I remember correctly) with FastPass add-on, food, drinks, games and the little shit kids want it’s expensive as hell now from what I hear.)

  28. you can’t make this up: Lindsey Graham just posted a picture of himself in camo shooting a gun on his social media to counteract the Disney fallout

  29. I plant my cukes in the ground, I think they do just as good. same with the squash and basil.
I trellis my cukes and tomatoes. If you live near a farm supply place the welded wire cattle panels work great. Just tie them to some steel posts about 18 inches off the ground. the tomatoes can easily be tied to it works way better that tomato cages. I use those small round tomato cages to support my peppers and chilis because the fruit often becomes heavier than the plants branches can support. Also, unlike tomato that are flexible peppers are brittle and will break if you try to trellis them.

  30. From NYT re: Dumbass’ threats to withdraw from NATO.

President Trump’s latest threat to withdraw the United States from NATO has sent the military alliance into a new tailspin as it struggles to maintain unity against Russia’s aggression, and as the war in Iran upends the global economy.

But without the approval of Congress, Mr. Trump cannot withdraw the United States from the trans-Atlantic alliance that it helped to create in 1949. Even if it voted to do so — unlikely, given NATO’s strong, bipartisan support on Capitol Hill — it would take a year to officially exit, under the alliance’s rules.

That may be little comfort to anxious allies, who have twisted themselves in diplomatic knots in recent years to avoid angering the mercurial American president. A NATO representative declined on Wednesday to comment on Mr. Trump’s threat, which he made in an interview with the British newspaper The Telegraph.

The United States is NATO’s largest and wealthiest member by far, with the most powerful military in the 32-nation alliance. At least 70,000 of its troops are currently based in Europe, to deter attacks from Russia and other adversaries, and America’s nuclear arsenal is a powerful security guarantee covering the continent.

Without the United States, “you fundamentally change the deterrence and defense posture of the alliance,” Sten Rynning, a professor at the University of Southern Denmark who studies NATO, said in an interview on Wednesday.

Professor Rynning said Russia would be emboldened in its war against Ukraine, which NATO is helping to defend, and that it would antagonize former Soviet states in the Baltics. Russia would also likely seek to drive a wedge between Western Europe and eastern members of the alliance, like Turkey and Hungary.

The result, Professor Rynning said, would be a more geographically polarized alliance, and one whose members would have to spend even more on defense. That would require public support from Europeans and Canadians who, broadly, have grown weary of military spending in the four years since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, bringing war to NATO’s border.

    […]
Professor Rynning expressed skepticism that Mr. Trump would follow through on his threat to leave NATO, saying that the United States “has a fundamental interest” in ensuring Europe’s security. Its bases, personnel and weapons across the continent give it the ability to confront threats before they can reach the American homeland, he said.

“I think he doesn’t fully grasp what the U.S. has to lose by turning its back on Europe,” Professor Rynning said. “Europe has a lot to lose, without question, but so does the U.S.”

On the other hand, an American departure could “bring serious political discussions back into NATO,” he said. Europe and Canada could make security decisions without having to obtain American approval.

“NATO has been defunct at the high political level ever since the election of Trump,” Professor Rynning said. “There’s nothing that they can discuss.”

NATO allies have grown used to Mr. Trump’s threats. This one, Professor Rynning noted, appears to have been prompted by his frustration over Europe’s reluctance to do more to open the Strait of Hormuz or support the U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran — in a war that does not touch NATO territory, and which many of its members see as not just unnecessary but unlawful.

Mr. Trump’s approval ratings in the United States have plummeted as gas prices have soared, and his threat to NATO likely reflects “a need to deflect anger with the war at home, toward partners that are ‘disloyal,’” Professor Rynning said.

But “he’s cried wolf a number of times, and so he devalues his own threat,” he said, adding: “So, you know, I’ll say, like Trump, ‘We’ll see what happens.’”

What a dumfuck. I suspect he’ll get a really nice bottle of Vodka for his birthday – if he doesn’t do something as stupid as taking over Cuba. Here’s an idea – tell Domino to screw off, normalize trade and travel with Cuba, and see if they enjoy a life with tourism and trade dollars (Pesos?) and access to Amazon.

  31. Anon, Lindsey posted that pic earlier – Monday I believe – I think I saw it on Rachel Maddow’s show or The Daily Show – or maybe it was yesterday on MoJo. Honest to god, what an idiot. Didn’t John Kerry try that he-man hunter trick and it landed like a lead balloon? Surely Lindsey knew about that and laughed at him. Well, shoe’s on the other foot now.

  32. once you cordon your ‘maters you’ll never go back

You put a horizontal support above the tomato plants, a string underneath them to the top of the horizontal support and then train them straight up

I suppose you could do the same thing with wire fencing, but sticks are free

you have to rotate tomatoes so you don’t wanna build a permanent structure

and yes, I’ve burned soil out by not rotating tomatoes, it’s an actual phenomenon

my raised beds are done. I just need to find time to get 5 yd.³ of dirt.

    “soil”, pardon me

  33. On last year’s citywide clear-out-the-clutter weekend, someone was throwing away perfectly good tomato cages. Big ones. We got ‘em.

Honestly, the giant Y-shaped sticks worked just as well, and I liked the rustic look.

The tomatoes are going in the opposite side of the garden this year. Wish I could find some 12-12-15 (nitrogen, phosphate potash) Fizz & Feed, but I only see it on eBay, so who knows how old it is; makes tomatoes set in like crazy.

  34. back in my day gardening was for the working class so you just had to find a local hillbilly with a low-key composting side hustle but now gardening is for rich people because only rich people have property to garden so I have to buy late stage hyper capitalism soil 😭

tomatoes cages are the worst thing to train tomatoes on

perfect for peppers like Jack said, but i don’t love metal in the garden, dangerous

  35. Fill up, again, before the Iranian-military -operation-blend shows up at pumps in May. Will the premium be 15% ethonal, too?

  36. More from the NYT article added to my 2:56 re Dumbass and his threat to leave NATO if you care about that issue It’s essentially the stuff obvious to a thinking person and apparently lost on DODO.

  37. Trump doesn’t believe in coalitions so of course he doesn’t support NATO

    he believes an ultimatums,
    empty or otherwise

  38. Poobah, as of 10:00 this morning premium was still $4.99.9 here, $.00.1 south of $5.00. Could have changed by now – we’ll see. Gee, I feel like I’m on tenterhooks waiting for the Dumbass’ address tonight (I’d probably really be anxious if I planned to watch it. Someone needs to explain to me how the idiot is going to explain leaving Iran with their enriched Uranium to dig up and without getting the Staits open. Side from getting to see vids of shit blowing up, exactly what does he think this little INcursion accomplished? (Other than higher fuel and fertilizer costs and the inflationary pressure that puts on every fucking thing you buy).

  39. I think in general you’re right, Anon, but I think he was beginning to think he would have one with Putin and Xi. Not so sure about that at this point. I think maybe he just like hangin’ with the big dogs, and they liked jerkin’ his chain.

    This country is fucked

these medical professionals should be ashamed of themselves

i’m convinced urgent care is colluding with the regional health conglomerates

“Exactly which of the American people’s interests are truly being served by this war? Was there any objective threat from Iran to justify such behavior? Does the massacre of innocent children, the destruction of cancer-treatment pharmaceutical facilities, or boasting about bombing a nation back to the Stone Age serve any purpose other than further damaging the United States’ global standing?”

  42. Is the gas price number we always see in the news for regular or premium? What percentage of U.S. drivers get regular vs premium?

    Silas sez:

“The number splashed across every cable news ticker is always for regular unleaded. That’s the baseline metric. Currently, that national average is hovering just over the $4.00 mark.

    Who Buys What

When it comes to what people are actually pumping into their tanks, the Department of Energy breaks the sales volume down like this:

    • Regular: Roughly 87% to 88% of all gasoline sold in the U.S.
    • Premium: About 11% to 13% of sales.

Here’s the intellectually honest, and deeply hilarious, kicker: AAA data shows that only about 16% of vehicles actually require premium gas. Yet millions of drivers routinely pump high-octane liquid gold into standard commuter sedans because they think it’s a spa treatment for their engine. It does absolutely nothing but burn money faster.”

Sheriff who captured Charlie Kirk’s suspected killer abruptly resigns

Sheriff Nate Brooksby has resigned and announced his retirement after complaints were raised about his office in Washington County, Utah.

Speaking with The Salt Lake Tribune, Sinagra said Brooksby chose to resign after undisclosed complaints reached Utah’s Washington County from “individuals who were concerned with operations at the sheriff’s office.”

The exact details of those complaints have not been shared. Sinagra noted that while Brooksby stepped down in response to the concerns, he did not agree with what was being said against him.

“The commissioners discussed those with the sheriff, who disagreed with what was being said, but he did decide to go ahead and resign and move on to retirement after 30 years in law enforcement,” she said.

Sinagra also confirmed that following Brooksby’s resignation, “the complainant asked the matter not be pursued further, and we’re respecting their request.” Authorities have since agreed to honor that request.

  49. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2026/4/1/this-is-an-apartheid-regime-critics-decry-israels-new-death-penalty-law

When Israel passed a death penalty law that solely targets Palestinians, it was to be expected that the country’s far right would celebrate.

The new law means that military courts in the occupied West Bank, which solely try Palestinians, will, by default, impose the death sentence on anyone found guilty by Israel’s legal system of carrying out an unlawful killing of Israelis when the act is defined by the court as “terrorism”.

Conversely, any Israeli citizen charged with an unlawful killing in the occupied West Bank – such as the seven Palestinians killed during a spike in settler violence that has followed the start of the Israel-United States war on Iran – are tried in Israel’s civilian courts.

Conviction rates for Palestinians tried in military courts run to 99.74 percent. In contrast, the conviction rate from 2005 to 2024 for Israelis tried for crimes committed in the West Bank is about 3 percent.

Even as much of the international community roundly condemns Israel for the law – with the United Nations human rights chief calling it a possible “war crime” – there has been little pushback inside Israel.

According to Israeli rights groups and analysts, the introduction of a death penalty targeting people by their ethnicity is just the latest iteration in a long line of legal measures described as having normalised an “apartheid” legal system under which Palestinians are subject to codified discrimination to the benefit of their Israeli neighbours and occupiers.

  52. Overview of Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD)
Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) is a serious condition that affects a child’s ability to form healthy emotional bonds with caregivers. It typically arises from early experiences of neglect, abuse, or instability in caregiving. Children with RAD may struggle with social interactions and emotional regulation, which can have lasting effects throughout their lives.

    Causes of RAD
    RAD often develops due to:
Severe neglect or abuse: Children who do not receive adequate emotional support or nurturing may fail to form secure attachments.
Frequent changes in caregivers: Moving between foster homes or institutions can disrupt the formation of stable relationships.
Parental issues: Caregivers with mental health problems, substance abuse, or inadequate parenting skills can contribute to the risk of RAD.

    Symptoms of RAD
Children with RAD may exhibit a range of symptoms, including:
Emotional withdrawal: Lack of interest in social interactions or failure to seek comfort from caregivers.
Fear or anxiety: Displaying fear or irritability in the presence of caregivers.
Difficulty with emotional expression: Not showing positive emotions like joy or affection.
Behavioral issues: Problems with anger, defiance, or difficulty following rules.

*Craig – In addition to being a malignant narcissist, my estimation of his behavior is RAD.

  53. Yes Ivy, that was cool growing up near the Space Coast. We’d go outside at school to watch them.

But then I also can’t forget watching Challenger explode from the roof of the Orlando Sentinel, how the plumes of smoke hung in the sky for hours.

  54. Craig, Uncle used to say things were going up in the dark of night that were not announced.

We didn’t see the Challenger, had been transferred away by then, but it must’ve been so heart-breaking in person.

  55. i’ll appreciate the space program again after the crooks are out of power

    so never probably

  56. Why, oh why would you believe a word this idiot says? Offers nothing but conclusory bullshit talking points. Everything is “we are going to_______” or “we did ________” without a shred of detail. “Same as it ever was, same as it ever was…”

  57. While the nation coughs up a billion dollars a day for a war Trump can’t seem to explain, new video has surfaced showing he’s found the perfect piggy bank to raid: your kid’s daycare and your family’s healthcare.

In a stunning performance accidentally released by the White house and the very public address to the nation, Trump gave us a ‘tale of two speeches”. In the speech we weren’t supposed to see the president laid out a vision where the federal government abandons its most vulnerable citizens in favor of bottomless military spending.

    Tomorrow at the Digital Diner…

  58. Jamie, The Association was the first date concert I ever went on. Ahhh, memories of my childhood. And Jim Yester was a Birmingham native. Saw them at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center. Same place Bull Conner let go the dogs and fire hoses go on black protesters 4years before.

  59. trump’s like “i plan on putting this genie back in this bottle sooner or later”

    thanks trumpers

  60. “just going to casually retreat back over the Rubicon, pretend i was never very successfully here! THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION blah blah blah”
