  1. from the Guardian:

Harris-Walz merch unites gen X dads – and Chappell Roan fans: ‘We’re not used to politicians making cool choices’
Simple, bold logo divides observers but camouflage hat embraces one of the year’s most unlikely fashion trends

With fewer than 100 days to go until the election, Kamala Harris announced her VP pick – the avuncular Minnesota governor Tim Walz – and dropped a new official logo.
Harris-Walz merchandise, including yard signs, T-shirts, and one much-memed camouflage printed hat, launched as soon as the current vice-president put Walz on her ticket on Tuesday. The logo looks simple, with some even calling it boring: tall, white, sans serif lettering spelling out the nominees’ last names.
    […]
“I like their lack of preciousness,” said Charles Nix, senior executive creative director of the typeface company Monotype. “The speed of this campaign and this design coming together demands a sort of truth. It doesn’t have a full year to be tested in focus groups. It speaks plainly and urgently.”
“They’re clearly emphasizing Harris,” said Katherine Haenschen, an assistant professor of communications and political science at Northeastern University. “It’s a good, solid logo.”
If the campaign’s logo is straightforward, its merch comes off as more playful. One $40 camo hat with Harris Walz embroidered in orange looks strikingly similar to a cap sold by the gen Z pop star Chappell Roan in support of her Midwest Princess tour.
Walz, a game-hunting Minnesotan who signed gun control measures into law, was wearing a camo baseball cap when he got the call from Harris offering him the VP slot, and he’s worn camo in the past. But some online commentators are reading into the campaign’s cap, released Tuesday after a high-energy rally in Philadelphia, as a nod to Roan. The singer even posted a side-by-side of her merch with the Harris-Walz hat on X, writing: “is this real.”
The cap, which the campaign called “the most iconic political hat in America”, can be interpreted as a rebuttal to Donald Trump’s red Maga option. The gen-X-dad styling might be seen as an attempt to appeal to middle American voters who might actually use it while hunting. “There’s a lot of connotations with camouflage print and preparing for battle, which I’m sure crossed the in-house design team’s mind, given how fraught the leadup to November is going to be,” said the fashion writer Freya Drohan. Fitting, too, as one of the Harris campaign’s slogans is “when we fight, we win”.
One could even imagine coastal hypebeasts who have never held a gun in their lives wearing the hat: camo has emerged as one of 2024’s most unlikely fashion trends, seen on runways from Balenciaga to A$AP Rocky’s AWGE label.
“This is the bushwick x los feliz unity that our nation needs,” wrote the comedian Desus Nice on X about the hat, citing two hip neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Los Angeles where it’s not uncommon to see people dressed in what can only be described as fish and game warden-chic.
“I’m personally really encouraged that it seems like the campaign is listening to young voices,” said Ziad Ahmed, head of Next Gen, a gen Z marketing practice at United Talent Agency. “I think everyone can feel that energy across the internet right now. When we first saw the hat, we almost couldn’t believe our eyes, as we are so not used to our politicians actually making good, cool, smart choices.”
Nate Jones, an executive at UTA Next Gen, added that he wanted to buy Harris merchandise after she announced her bid, but felt “quite disappointed” by the lineup. “I didn’t see anything I would actually wear, until this hat,” he said. “It’s simultaneously street style and gen X dad style.” Jones ordered the cap, which is expected to drop in early October. The Harris campaign told Teen Vogue it sold $1m worth of caps in less than 24 hours.
Merch alone will not win an election, but the excitement around the hat reiterates how Harris’ presidential bid continues to liven up a once dreary election cycle. It’s also clear that Harris’s team has set its sights on delivering viral moments meant to thrill the very-online voting bloc.

  2. Michael Kosta on Tim Walz’s debut at Philadelphia’s rowdy Harris rally, the GOP struggle to find an attack line on the new VP candidate, and Republicans descending into tampon turmoil. Plus, Troy Iwata investigates why Trump is calling Harris and Walz communists and discovers other secret commies.

  3. Damnit, i’m in style 😒

i’m gonna need a whole new look. Oh, well, if it’s to preserve democracy, i’m fine with it 🫡 🇺🇸

    Harris/Walz with Liberty and Justice for Y’allz 2024 let’s goooo 🦅

  4. Hey JD?  What would you talk about with someone who wanted to have a beer with you?
”Duhhhh…. Well I do like to drink beer”
a Chicago- sized 16 inch softball on a tee… and again Vance swings and misses
The Stalker chasing  Air Force 2 around.

  5. That’s a gut punch. I have been led to believe Georgia was leaning Blue. Trump trashing Kemp shows what a mess the Republicans are in down in the red clay state .

  6. BiD, thanks for your comment about “trouble starts with T and T stands for Tim”
Kept wondering who Walz’s voice reminded me of. sure sounds like Robert Preston, same midwest cadence and quality:

  7. i looked at the Cook numbers and it is kind of depressing that this race is even close, they have trump UP disregarding toss-up states

He is a juvenile, maniacal convict and adjudicated sexual-abuser and 70+ million people still plan on voting for him??

He attempted a coup against his own effing government, what is wrong with people? 😭

ok ebb and flow ✌️ 🇺🇸

  8. Someone, somewhere said Tim Walz is the dad millennial women lost to Fox Noise and MAGAt-itis.

JD likes beer? Then why are there multiple pics of him with cases (CASES) of “Happy Dad” hard seltzer floating around? Did he get an endorsement deal with them? Oh, and has Maybelline called about an eyeliner deal? He’s not just weird, he’s effing weird…and his views sound more horrible than Don-Old’s because there are no crazy tangents.

Project 2025 Don’t let happen to you!

  9. Ha, her crowds are drivi8ng him to distraction…
    Donald J. Trump
    @realDonaldTrump
If Kamala has 1,000 people at a Rally, the Press goes “crazy,” and talks about how “big” it was – And she pays for her “Crowd.” When I have a Rally, and 100,000 people show up, the Fake News doesn’t talk about it, THEY REFUSE TO MENTION CROWD SIZE. The Fake News is the Enemy of the People!
    Aug 08, 2024, 9:13

  10. Enemy of the people – now where have I heard that before? I doubt that Dumbass ever read or saw Ibsen.

  11. Harris-Walz rallies are getting 5x the number of supporters that Vance is getting, maybe as much as 10x.  Trump is sequestered in Florida, getting the airplane fuelled up for a massive rally in…Montana? Yes!  Expect a roaring crowd of 250 admirers.
As to rejoicing at my candidate trailing in polls because in the past the former candidate rebounded and won…that is absolute twaddle, as my British correspondent says all the time.

  12. More on the swiftboating of Walz by the Republicans that Dexter brought up yesterday. From ABC news:

According to records by the National Guard, the 1st Battalion of the 125th Field Artillery received an alert order on July 14, 2005, – two months after Walz retired. The mobilization order came in August and the unit mobilized in October.
Joseph Eustice, another retired command sergeant major who served with Walz, tells ABC News that while there was speculation of a deployment around that time there was no firm indication that Walz’s unit would be sent to Iraq until that July alert order.
Eustice says he remembers Walz struggling with the timing of wanting to serve as a lawmaker but also avoiding asking for a deferment so he could do so.
“He had a window of time. He had to decide. And in his deciding, we were not on notice to be deployed. There were rumors. There were lots of rumors, and we didn’t know where we were going until it was later that, early summer, I believe,” Eustice told ABC News.

Vance has also accused Walz of “Stolen Valor” from his speech yesterday in talking about gun regulation he said that he carried a rifle “in war”. At no other time has Walz made the claim that he was in combat and has been explicit in interviews that he had never seen combat. I suspect that this was a verbal flub where he substituted “for” with the word “in”.
This is mud slinging in the hopes that some of it sticks and people remember the headline rather than  the substance.
    Jack

  13. Again, I have deduced the photo of Walz in combat gear w/rifle was taken when he was either training Italian troops in Italy, or maybe it was simply “picture day” for a book that is produced for relatives…I still have mine from 1969 at Fort Knox BCT.  The issue has been explained enough that we can move on.  Now, the selecting of Walz over Shapiro is not an Eagleton type thing;  I just can’t shake the awful feeling that Harris made a terrible mistake in passing over Shapiro.  The proof is in the pudding, and we’ll know in 89 days now.
I know you are saying STFU about this, but I ain’t alone. It’s the Pennsylvania delegate grab…we cannot lose it.

  14. Miss Blue (who is no longer in Dallas)
A big “attaboy”  for you and others like you. it looks like you all have been successful in getting the word out about project 2025.
    from my morning reads.

a new national University of Massachusetts Amherst Poll has found that the policies associated with the Heritage Foundation’s “Project 2025” are deeply unpopular among Americans.
According to the poll, conducted July 29-Aug. 1, more than half (53%) of Americans – and two-thirds of Democrats – indicated that they had read, seen or heard at least something about “Project 2025” – and they don’t particularly care for it.

  15. Thank all y’all for the ammunition in my about-to-break-out war against willful and malicious ignorance.

  16. Bink is writing fresh lines for the campaign trail. They should use that teaching v leeching line.

  17. Dex, Bozeman Montana is a long way from everywhere, (3 hours to Missoula, 2 hours to Billings – total population of all 3 is about 329K), but SFB heads follow his campaign stops as if he was Jerry Garcia leading an iconic jam band.  There will be enough non-Montanans there to put a bunch of white faces behind him (with 2 black folks to show the diversity of his support) and you won’t see the crowd in front of him – leaves room for him to lie about how big it was.  BTW, while everything SFB does is for himself, the rally is ostensibly a rally to support the Senate race of Tim Sheehy, who is running against Jon Tester.

  18. I saw a headline that Dumpy is giving a hastily announced press conference. Trying to undo last week’s fiasco with black journalists? I just wish reporters would stop making long-winded speeches disguised as questions and cut right to the chase with pithy one-liners, like What the fuck is wrong with you?

  19. If this isn’t an outlier it’s unprecedented to gain so much in so little time..

Craig, it’s going to be wild!

“…Labour member Alun Davies accused the leader of the Tories in Wales, Andrew RT Davies, of tweeting a “direct lie” earlier on Tuesday that Labour want to pay illegal immigrants £1,600 a month.”

Nice idea.  How do their judges get to be judges?

  22. “He’s an angry man; unhappy with Obama; unhappy with Pelosi.”   Every accusation is an admission of what goes on in his own, fetid brain.

  23. There’s a lot of echo in there.  How many in that cave?

Thete are images of him on stage in PA, at the same venue, and the top tier is empty.
He’s taking responsibility for Russia attacking Ukraine, and for Hamas attacking Israel?   Weird way to ask for votes.   Oh, he doesn’t ask for votes.  He doesn’t need anyone.

He is in hell. Good. Stay there. Nobody loves you, everybody hates you, you can go eat worms.

ps – Thank You for the infrastructure package and all of that road and bridge work, POTUS Biden.

  24. ABC News spokeswoman confirms that it will hold a prez debate with Trump and Harris on September 10, now that Trump has agreed (again). David Muir and Linsey Davis will moderate.

  25. Blue

Didn’t know anyone else used that expression:  “Nobody loves you, everybody hates you, you can go eat worms.

Are we sisters and no one bothered to mention the relationship?

  26. Harris Gains 23 Points, Overtakes Donald Trump by 9: Marist Poll

    stfu

…had to read that twice and still digesting it

  27. BiD – more likely a bounce from improved unemployment numbers and falling mortgage rates.  Wall Street likes politicians and all, but they really only look at economic numbers to guide the trading – or so I’m told. So here’s the thing.  After the weaker jobs numbers last week some panic ensued that a recession might be gathering steam and the 10 year Treasury bond yield dropped.  That underlies mortgage rates, so they began to drop – almost 1/4 point in the last week (3/4 point since April). So fast forward – the unemployment numbers improved since last week’s report, the Fed has suggested it will be lowering rates, and a sigh of relief came about the recession fears, more people are applying for mortgages, which feeds the housing industry which has been in a slump that Wall Street thinks will ease with the lowered mortgage rates, and voila, the stock market rises 700 points, erasing the loss from – wait for it – yesterday.  It’s still 1500 points below its July 17 peak, but it’s coming back – at least today.

  28. A debate on the 10th, one day before the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, about which tRUMPsky lied about hiring workers to help with the clean up, and about clearing rubble himself. Can you imagine? Ha!

Then, his sentencing for the hush money case is on the 18th.
His September schedule is really gonna eat into his golf game.

  29. if social media existed like it does now when Howard Dean gave his famous battle-cry, he would have went viral and won

  30. Jamie – I heard the worm song on Kids In The Hall, as a self-directed pity party song…which also works for the whining ex-president.

  31. …skipped through some of that press conference that Craig posted, above (replay available in embedded viewer), and king dippy looks nervous, real nervous

internal polling must be terrible for him

  32. NYT is reporting that…

Harris’s Rise Has Unsettled Trump, Who Is Struggling to Focus, Supporters Say

Donald J. Trump’s allies want him to talk about the issues, but he seems distracted by Kamala Harris’s burst of momentum.

Former President Donald J. Trump dialed into “Fox & Friends” on Wednesday morning for his first interview since Vice President Kamala Harris picked Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota as her running mate.

“Talk about how you’re going to handle this on the campaign trail,” the friendly Fox host Ainsley Earhardt said to the former president. “Will you just really hone in on how they voted in the past?”
It was really more of a plea than a question.

“Well, I am,” Mr. Trump assured her. “I’m going to be doing that.”

The way Republicans see it, it should not be hard for Mr. Trump to pivot from President Biden to this new Democratic ticket. All he has to do is hammer Ms. Harris and Mr. Walz for things they have said and done, to paint them as out-of-step from most Americans, on everything including policing, immigration and transgender policies.

But lately Mr. Trump keeps getting tangled up in distractions of his own making. He has gone on tangents about Ms. Harris’s biracial identity. He has picked fights with fellow Republicans. He has fantasized that Mr. Biden might somehow snatch back the nomination.

Many in Mr. Trump’s party find this all to be counterproductive, to say the least.

“The Harris-Walz ticket is the furthest left ticket in American history. They are a target-rich environment,” said Ben Shapiro, the right-wing media warrior. “All he has to do is focus the attack, to dump the war chest he’s accrued on this extremist ticket, to stick to a simple point: You were better off in 2019 than you are in 2024.”

Mr. Trump started to veer off message one week ago, when he questioned Ms. Harris’s identity as a Black woman before a roomful of Black journalists at a conference in Chicago. “He’s more comfortable with personality-driven attacks, rather than issue-driven attacks,” said Neil Newhouse, a Republican pollster. “But given that Kamala’s a relative unknown, the policy- and issue-related attacks would get more traction right now.”

The message discipline issue compounded on Saturday, at a rally in Atlanta, where Mr. Trump repeatedly attacked the state’s popular Republican governor, Brian Kemp, for not going along with lies about the 2020 election having been stolen. “I was saddened to see two brothers in the same family argue,” said Jack Kingston, a former House Republican from Georgia and a Trump ally.

At times, it seems as though Mr. Trump has not even accepted his new political reality — that he is no longer in a race against Mr. Biden. On Tuesday, Mr. Trump wondered aloud in a post on Truth Social if there were any chance that Mr. Biden “CRASHES the Democrat National Convention and tries to take back the Nomination.”

[And it goes on] And I really liked this:

Adding to the sense that Mr. Trump is flailing about, this week he has been testing out a new mocking nickname for his opponent, referring to Ms. Harris as “Kamabla.” It is a departure from the previous epithet he had chosen (“Laffin’ Kamala”), and nobody seems quite sure how to decipher it.

Asked if he understood what Mr. Trump meant by “Kamabla,” Mr. Kingston replied, “No.” As for the attacks on her racial identity? “I would stick to the price of groceries,” he said.

    And finally:

“All Trump has to do is talk about his positions, like he did in 2016,” said Ann Coulter, the conservative commentator who broke with Mr. Trump some years back, largely because of his inability to focus on the issues she cared about. “But, no, he’s going to spend the first 20 minutes of every rally attacking the popular Republican governor of Georgia or trying out stupid nicknames for Kamala.”

Ms. Coulter added that “Republicans who expected Trump to run a smart, disciplined campaign are going to be sorely disappointed.”

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Ann Coulter is hardly some left wing hack.

  33. They are a target-rich environment,” said Ben Shapiro

what a disgusting thing to say, followed by more violence metaphors

You were better off in 2019

Yeah fighting with half my family and a state of constant dread was fantastic, can’t wait to go back 🙄

  34. https://www.cnn.com/2024/08/08/europe/isis-inspired-suicide-terror-attack-taylor-swift-vienna-intl/index.html

“Footage has emerged of Swifties serenading each another at local squares in Vienna and trading personalized friendship bracelets – a concert traditioninspired by the lyrics on Swift’s song “You’re on Your Own, Kid” from her 10th studio album “Midnights.”

“We were really looking forward to the concert and have met a lot of fans over the last few days,” the 45-year-old said. “The whole city was full of happy, peaceful people exchanging bracelets and spontaneously singing together.”

“Instead, the pastor opened the doors of her church to host a Swift-themed singalong for fans…
People were crying, holding hands, singing along softly,” said Kristi Hovington, 46, who wandered into the chapel after hearing tunes from the Eras Tour setlist. “It was such a beautiful moment, a pocket of beauty amidst the disappointment and anger.”

“I just walked right over and basked in the camaraderie of it all, the way it exuded a lot of joie de vivre, a giant middle finger to all of those who wanted the squash that joy and instil fear,” added the 34-year-old physician, who has attended shows in the US and Europe.

“Swifties have shown time and time again that they are a formidable community among music fans,” he told CNN on Thursday. “In the grand scheme of what’s happening around the world today, we are all aware of where a concert cancellation falls, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be supportive of each other.”

    Self-radicalized incels, pffft.

  35. Ol lost in space keeps on giving reasons he should be wrapped up in a special jacket with the buckles on the back.  What others call lies, I am sure are “facts” in his world. He knows them as real, just as his sky is brown and the rain is yellow.

Is he really running things?  So much of what he spouts is probably his real think, but updated from the 1950’s by people like Steven Miller, Bolton, and many others hiding in closets.  They play him like a piano, lots of keys to click and pedals to push. The sounds he makes are terrible, but welcome by the tone deaf of the US.

  36. Bink, they seem to forget that SFB was President in 2020 and his administration (with the notable exception of his Covid medical team) looked like monkeys trying to fuck footballs.

  37. Even funnier, tRUMPsky’s “Criminals for Kamala” post (ah, see he can spell it right when it suits him) was met with the BEST response:

    “Donald Trump Endorses Kamala Harris.”

Ha!   Adolf keeps trying to run away from his many, many felony convictions.

  38. On a day when the assault on Walz could use a critical boost from the big guy this gibberish is all he offered, another reason I don’t think there was any staff prep or strategizing for this fiasco:

    Trump:

“She picked a radical left man that is, he has positions that are not even possible to believe that they exist. He is going for things that nobody has even heard of. Heavy into the transgender world. Heavy into lots of different worlds.”

  39. Trump supporters should be very afraid of debate. The guy we just saw is the guy who will be showing up. Unable to drive a coherent focused message, barely able to put sentences together or in the right order. That’s what we saw in the Biden debate but it was overlooked because Joe was so much worse off.

  40. Shawn Fain,  native Hoosier and President of the United Auto Workers International, just ripped Trump to shreds last night with Lawrence O’Donnell. I have a vote in International elections as a retired local officer and I voted for the Fain coalition last year.  Fain will do his best to get the word out that our hope is with Harris-Walz.  Michigan is essential.

  41. Trump is an agent for change alright.  “Russia, if you’re listening…”
We remember that Donald John Trump is a Russian agent, at least in his own feeble brain.
I cannot envision what attack mode we will witness on 9-10-24 with ABC moderators.  Trump calls ABC fake news.  A good start.  When Trump begins hovering over Harris like he did with HRC, I’d love to watch her kick Trump in the nuts.
Shawn Fain is on live , MSNBC, in 2 minutes.

  42. When shit starts going really sideways for Crump, guess whose will be the first head to roll.

Shadee Vance acts like he really thinks he’s going to be the first guy ever involved with Clump who will not wind up getting the shaft.

Weird and stupid running neck and neck for being the best description of that line of thought.

Kamala Harris did an amazing job of vetting her VP candidates.    Future-Madam POTUS, may all of your decisions be this on point.

  44. Trump’s former comms director. Stephanie Grisham:

“He’s panicking. I’ve seen this play many times. He thinks his team is failing him & no one can speak better/“save” his campaign/defend him but him. He hates the coverage Harris is getting & thinks only he can fix it.”

  45. Poobah, the SFB quote in your 4:42 makes Caribou Barbie’s word salad look almost articulate, and that’s quite a high bar.

  46. She is getting attention for how she stared down the anti- war Palestinian supporters with that look with that unflinching glare. She will have that perfected by 9-10  and use it on Trump. The United States has a real problem with the path to peace.  You can bet your life Harris is praying for a ceasefire by voting time.

  47. Man , did Lawrence O’Donnell rip the press for not tearing into Trump, showing how the press was formerly screaming at Karine Jean-Pierre and also at Biden.  Yesterday they cowered at the presence of the rapist.
And from the “by God, I didn’t know that”  rolodex:  Long Dong Silver’s benefactor, Harlan Crow, financed the Swift Boat lies against  Bronze Star, Silver Star, and 3-time Purple Heart recipient John Kerry.  Personally, I was not in the Navy, but my good friend Joe , long dead now from Agent Orange, was on Swift Boats in the Navy in Viet Nam.  He told me the horrors those crews endured on those rivers.  Now, Chris LaCivita, the designer of the Swift Boat bullshit, is the one trying to diss Walz on military roles and likely some lies he will concoct.
