The “uncommon valor” remark was made by Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, USN on 17 March 1945. A fuller version of his comment is “The battle of Iwo Island has been won. The United States Marines, by their individual and collective courage, have conquered a base which is as necessary to us in our continuing forward movement toward final victory as it was vital to the enemy in staving off ultimate defeat…. Among the Americans who served on Iwo Island, uncommon valor was a common virtue.”

Trump’s pivot came after Republican lawmakers and other allies raised concerns that he was squandering public support for his signature campaign issue and senior administration officials increasingly saw the chaotic scenes in Minneapolis as a political liability. Gun rights advocates, normally steadfast allies of Trump, publicly criticized administration officials for criticizing Pretti for carrying a gun during protest activity. State officials said Pretti had a permit to carry the weapon.

  7. After Minnesota, What’s Next?

So Maine is officially next on the menu with “Operation Catch of the Day.”

It’s the Minneapolis playbook verbatim: stiff-arm the local police, grab and detain citizens alongside the “targets,” let rogue agents operate with total impunity and demonize elected officials who complain.

Reports confirm at least 200 feds are targeting Somali and African communities in Lewiston (overall population 38,800).

U.S. judge orders ICE chief to appear in court, threatens contempt ruling

Chief judge of Minnesota district court says ICE has repeatedly flouted court orders.

    By Jeremy Roebuck
Minnesota’s chief federal judge has demanded the acting head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement personally appear in court Friday to explain what the judge described as repeated failures to comply with dozens of court orders amid its enforcement efforts in the state.

“The court’s patience is at an end,” U.S. District Judge Patrick J. Schiltz wrote in a remarkable filing late Monday, summoning acting ICE director Todd M. Lyons to his courtroom. The judge threatened possible contempt proceedings against Lyons over several instances in which Schiltz said the agency failed to grant detained immigrants bond hearings that had been ordered by judges in Minneapolis.

The court’s order set up a yet another potential showdown between the federal judiciary and Trump administration officials, who have sought to paint judges who question their tactics as “liberal activists.”

It was not clear Tuesday whether Lyons would comply with the order to appear or whether Justice Department attorneys would seek to block it in court. A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

“The Court acknowledges that ordering the head of a federal agency to personally appear is an extraordinary step,” wrote Schiltz, an appointee of President George W. Bush and a former law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. “But the extent of ICE’s violation of court orders is likewise extraordinary, and lesser measures have been tried and failed.”

Since the Trump administration surged thousands of ICE agents to the Minneapolis region this month, the federal courts in the city have been inundated with suits filed by migrants seeking release from immigration detention, even as federal prosecutors have flooded dockets with efforts to charge people protesting ICE’s efforts.

In recent rulings, several judges have expressed frustration over the government’s tactics and posture in court — including this weekend, when Schiltz penned an exasperated letter to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, questioning unusual moves by government officials to charge demonstrators involved in a church protest in St. Paul.
    […]

Oh, goody, due process and contempt shit. Time for that co-equal branch of government stuff This sets up a nice contrast between the Gym Jordan Contempt of Congress bullshit and administration Contempt of Court actions when the issue becomes enforcement. The shit flowing downhill angle should be entertaining. If only there was an independent agency to enforce Contempt of Court charges against the administration, but alas, Blondi holds the key to enforcement of Court orders against admin figures. IOW, there ain’t no chance of any action against Lyons no matter what the judge orders.

In 16 shooting incidents since July, no DHS officers have faced charges

The Trump administration’s rush to defend the officers and accuse the victims of attacking them has sparked widespread outrage and demands for accountability.

By David Nakamura and Olivia George

Department of Homeland Security officers have fired shots during enforcement arrests or at people protesting their operations 16 times since July, and as in the recent shootings in Minneapolis, in each case the Trump administration has publicly declared their actions justified before waiting for investigations to be completed.

Most of the incidents involve officers firing at drivers during enforcement stops in cities like Los Angeles and Chicago where DHS has surged federal immigration officers. At least 10 people have been struck by bullets — including four U.S. citizens. Three people have been killed.

The shootings have sparked alarm not only for their violence but also for the Trump administration’s response. Lawyers say officials have been quick to pursue felony charges against those fired at — though in four of 10 cases, prosecutors have either dropped charges or a judge has dismissed them after evidence emerged contradicting the government’s narrative of events.

None of the officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, U.S. Border Patrol or Homeland Security Investigations has faced criminal charges in any of the shootings, nor has the administration announced any internal disciplinary measures against them.

“Historically, federal cases are investigated thoroughly up front,” said Christopher Parente, who previously served as an assistant U.S. attorney in Chicago and Miami and is representing a woman shot by Border Patrol in Chicago. “Here, they are charging people first and asking questions later. There’s such pressure from the administration to charge right away and make headlines so they can put out false press releases.”

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi L. Noem frequently notes that immigration officers are facing a spike in assaults and threats amid President Donald Trump’s aggressive campaign to deport undocumented immigrants. In separate incidents last summer, gunmen ambushed ICE and Border Patrol facilities in Texas, wounding two local police officers who responded to the attacks.

DHS did not respond to questions from The Washington Post on whether the agency has taken disciplinary action against any of its officers involved in shooting incidents. In an email, an official for the agency said that federal immigration officers are trained to use the “minimum force necessary” and that any time an officer fires their weapon it must be reported and reviewed by the “appropriate law enforcement agency.”
    […]

Well, now, that “any time an officer fires their weapon it must be reported and reviewed by the “appropriate law enforcement agency” statement is a LIE. We know that DHS said there would be no review of the fatal shooting of Reneé Good.

While in Iowa, the Republican president will make a stop at a local business and then deliver a speech on affordability, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said. The remarks will be at the Horizon Events Center in Clive, a suburb of Des Moines.

The trip will also highlight energy policy, White House chief of staff Susie Wiles said last week. It’s part of the White House’s strategy to have Trump travel out of Washington once a week ahead of the midterm elections to focus on affordability issues facing everyday Americans – an effort that keeps getting diverted by crisis.

OPEN THREAD: What is the one thing you are trying to ignore today?

  22. The lonely incel MAGA could use some advice. Pretti showed them what it means to be a man.

    Jan. 27, 2026, 6:00 AM EST
    By
    Zeeshan Aleem
The Trump administration described Alex Pretti, the 37-year-old intensive care nurse killed by federal immigration officers in Minneapolis on Saturday, as a “terrorist.” The reality, as seen on multiple videos taken of the incident, shows the opposite. It was the federal officers who acted as agents of state terror, while Pretti demonstrated extraordinary bravery in the final moments of his life as he tried to protect the most vulnerable in his community. Although the American right is obsessed with reviving “masculinity,” its vilification of Pretti demonstrates a complete misunderstanding of its meaning. It was Pretti, in fact, who served as a model of the courageous male “protector.”

Pretti was speaking to and video-recording Border Patrol officers as they conducted an immigration detention, and he intervened when an officer shoved a woman to the ground. But he did not intervene by acting violently; rather, he appeared to attempt to shield the woman with his body. He was immediately pepper-sprayed, then several agents grabbed him and wrestled him to the ground. Video footage shows an agent striking Pretti repeatedly with a tear gas canister and an agent removing a firearm from his belt before Pretti was shot several times.

Pretti’s final act in life was to try to intervene on behalf of a woman who appeared to be in danger. He, of course, knew that immigration agents in the city had at times acted viciously, and had recently killed a protester, but he stepped in anyway. That took guts. And he paid with his life.

    More at link.

  23. Maybe they achieved their quota in Minnesota of 2 dead protesters and now they have to go somewhere else and kill 2 more.

What Is UpScrolled? App Gains Interest During TikTok Outage

As TikTok users are experiencing a prolonged outage, many have been searching for alternatives—and one app in particular is catching attention: UpScrolled.

On Sunday, January 25, TikTok users reported widespread issues with the app. Problems ranged from being unable to sign in, lagging performance, difficulty reposting videos, repetitive content in their feeds and less-curated recommendations.

*Content creators that normally get hundreds of thousands of views are now getting little engagement now that BiBi & Adolf’s Buddy, Ellison, is involved.

To comply with new regulations, TikTok’s U.S. operations were restructured in December 2025, forming a joint venture with Oracle, Silver Lake, and MGX, who collectively hold a 50 percent stake, while ByteDance retains 19.9 percent.

Amid the TikTok outage, the app UpScrolled has emerged as one of the most-discussed alternatives. Users on X describe it as a “no censorship, no billionaires” social networking app.

On its website, UpScrolled says: “Time to scroll differently. Shadowbanned elsewhere? Not here. UpScrolled is the social platform where every voice gets equal power. No shadowbans. No algorithmic games. No pay-to-play favoritism.”

The mixed feed includes options for text posts, images and video. On X, people are announcing how they are moving to the UpScrolled platform in protest of Big Tech ownership; while, on UpScrolled, current worldwide trending posts include #freepalestine, #ICE and #gaza.

UpScrolled was founded by Issam Hijazi, a Palestinian Australian technologist and CEO of the company behind the app, Recursive Methods Pty Ltd, based in Australia.

“It’s more than just an alternative to Meta, X, or TikTok—it’s a reimagining of what social media should be: a space where creators, communities, and businesses thrive independently, with real control, transparency and accountability.”

  26. War Secretary Hegseth Greenlights Minnesota Military Base As Op Center For Migrant Crackdown

In a move clearly meant to send a message to Minneapolis that the Trump administration is not backing down, War Secretary Pete Hegseth has greenlit the use of a military base near the Minneapolis airport as a housing, vehicle storage, and staging hub for ICE and Border Patrol operations. This isn’t symbolic — it’s operational.

In what could be a sign of President Donald Trump’s Minnesota immigration siege digging in, Hegseth approved a request Monday by the Department of Homeland Security to further support its efforts in the Twin Cities.
