  2. from The Guardian UK and US always find ways to come together, King Charles to tell Congress

King Charles is expected to allude to recent strains between the UK and US in a rare address by a monarch to the US Congress as he will underline that “time and again our two countries have always found ways to come together”.
The king’s remarks in a speech to both houses on Tuesday will come after Donald Trump has threatened to tear up a trade deal signed by the UK and US, mocked the Royal Navy and insulted the UK prime minister.
Donald Trump’s anger with the UK and Keir Starmer is largely driven by the latter’s refusal to take part in the US and Israeli offensive against Iran, which continues to destabilise the global economy.
Charles and Camilla are in Washington on a four-day state visit to the US to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence from the UK.
In his speech, the king is expected to reflect that while the UK and US have not always agreed on all matters over the past 250 years, the foundations of their “democratic, legal and social traditions” – stretching all the way back to Magna Carta – are such that “time and again our two countries have always found ways to come together”.
As Trump threatens to impose “a big tariff” on the UK if it does not drop its digital services tax on US technology companies, Charles will reference the importance of trade and technology deals that will play a vital part in the two countries’ continued economic partnership.
The start of the trip – Charles’s first to America as king – has been overshadowed by an assassination attempt against Trump at a Washington media dinner on Saturday night.
The monarch is expected to make brief reference to the attack and offer “the highest regard and friendship of the British people to the people of the United States” on the 250th anniversary of American independence.
It is only the second time a British monarch has addressed a joint meeting of Congress, after Queen Elizabeth II did so in 1991.
The king will point out how the US and UK have stood together through moments that have defined their shared history, and that “our defence, intelligence and security ties are measured not in years but in decades”.
As the war on Iran drives up the cost of living around the world, an effect that critics have called “Trumpflation”, Charles is expected to say that by defending and reaffirming their common values and ideals, the US and UK can promote security and prosperity now and in the future for the benefit of the world.
He will hail America’s natural wonders and stress how important it is to defend and protect “nature’s own economy”.
Referring to his faith, he will express his belief that in the hearts of the two countries lies “a generosity of spirit and a duty to foster compassion, to promote peace, to deepen mutual understanding and to value people of all faiths and none”.
He is expected to conclude by noting that the story of both nations over the last 250 years is one of “reconciliation and renewal”, giving rise to “one of the greatest alliances in human history”, which he hopes will continue to safeguard their shared values long into the future.
The speech, which has been written on the advice of the government, is expected to last 20 minutes.

  3. King Charles arrived just a few hours ago on a diplomatic mission that has been ludicrously overegged, given the track record of the man he is visiting. So here’s our adaptation of a classic British Army marching song (that developed in the seventeenth century and became a staple in the eighteenth – including in the colonies and the Revolutionary War that saw the USA declare its independence). The British Grenadiers is a rousing tune – for many still a regimental quick march – and often a feature of the Trooping the Colour ceremony. Before people wring their hands at adapting it, it’s been a recurring theme throughout its history – including notoriously by Joseph Warren (his was called “Free America”) in 1774, just before the War of Independence began. We kept to some archaic language to give it the right feel, and had a stab at our own arrangement for who had instruments at home – though a hasty one, on a school night. There are references in there to scrofula, a recent UK ambassador and we removed powwow but kept kowtow after checking about usage and implications – but apologies if any offence caused. We’re thinking about recording a few like this in the run-up to the 250th anniversary, so this is a kind of test case 🙂

  4. other news of yesterday rather than yesteryear

Jon Stewart dives into the chaos at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner: After a shooter interrupted mentalist Oz Pearlman revealing Karoline Leavitt’s baby name, cabinet members abandoned their wives to rush to safety, Wolf Blitzer reported on the scene without a shoe, and Trump insisted none of this would’ve happened in his larger, more secure, East Wing ballroom. Plus, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog recounts his traumatic night of dodging bullets while trying to avoid having his carcass eaten by RFK Jr.

  5. BTW in case you skipped over the Marsh family’s new masterpiece, here are the LYRICS:

Some talk of Alexander, and some of Hercules
But neither great commander faced such adversities
For of all the world’s state bureaus, to Trump he must repair
Can he end a row with a raised eyebrow? Oh the British King is here!

Those heroes of antiquity ne’er faced such trials withal
First cancer then Prince Andrew – now this neanderthal
Bu-t our brave Charlie’s go-ing, his balls big as his ears
He will not kowtow cos he’s too highbrow, oh the British King is here!

Whene’er he hears a slander, he’ll form a stiff blockade
He’ll rally for poor Starmer, and subjects serenade
He’ll compliment new ba-llrooms, though ghastly their veneer
All smile and bow to the sacred cow, oh the British King is here!

A feat of acrobatics this great encounter shows
A king who’s democratic meets knave in Emperor’s clothes
No host was e’er so monstrous or caused such grief and fear
Don’t disavow – who’s the despot now? Not the British King that’s clear!

And when the visit’s over, a triumph they’ll declare
The press will cry “Hurrah, boys: all damage is repaired”
The royal touch has cured disease, a miracle’s appeared
And they’ll be wrong, like with Mandelson, cos a bent wheel can’t be steered

  7. “Detailed research on behalf of the Daily Mail has shown they have a common ancestor in the form of the 3rd Earl of Lennox, a great-grandson of King James II of Scotland, which means that Donald Trump and Charles III are 15th cousins… Their shared forebear met an unfortunate end, however.”… Lord Lennox was embroiled in a “vicious” power grab involving control of the then-infant King James V; he would later be crushed at the 1526 Battle of Linlithgow Bridge.
He suffered a violent fate at the hands of a “rival laird” with the Game of Thrones-esque moniker of Bastard of Arran.
Lord Lennox was taken prisoner and murdered by the laird, but he was survived by a son, the 4th Earl of Lennox.

  8. Cancel midterms? That won’t end well. As the song goes, “Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.” Once folks have nothing left to lose, there will be ongoing strikes/boycotts/protests/riots like this country hasn’t seen in decades…or maybe centuries.

Mother Nature may cancel Adolf before then, but we are still saddled with the techbro fascists and (White) Heritage Foundation Christo-fascists.

JD is a shapeshifting weasel, but he’s Peter’s pet…although I can see him biting his owner once he’s installed.

The safer way for them to go is to steal the midterms but just by a little.

ps – If those pictures of the afterparty on Saturday didn’t tell you the attempt was a hoax. They were all smiling like they had just snuck a cookie out of the jar right in front of mommy without her knowing.

pps – The guy was affiliated with NASA/JPL so not just “a teacher from Torrence.” A scientist.

Conspiracy theory for the day: The scientists who just walked away with a gun, and those unalived even when they specifically said they weren’t suicidal, were they part of a program that was able to activate them (for lack of a better word) to do themselves in.. or something else.

I mean, the manifesto was ready to go (normally, they don’t release those, but this came out immediately) AND it highlighted the lack of security which is what Adolf needed to pocket the ballroom donations and sell this as a necessity that taxpayers would need to fund. It’s all too convenient.

Fun fact: The “donations” for the ballroom from lawsuit winnings has gone missing. The legal entity over Adolf’s lie-bury has dissolved and we don’t know what happened to the money…except I think we probably do.

Trump Meets King Charles & FBI Daycare Raids

Trump hosts King Charles, the FBI raids daycares, and we debate if the latest assassination attempt was friendly fire. Welcome to the diner.

We flip on Mystery Science Theater mode to watch Donald and Melania host the royals, complete with a military flyover so pathetic it couldn’t compete with the pigeons circling Trail Mix HQ. While the German Chancellor openly mocks US foreign policy, the FBI is apparently treating Minneapolis daycares like cartel strongholds. Just another Tuesday in the empire.

We also take a detour into the bird kingdom, covering everything from incompetent nesting doves to Caroline Kennedy’s chilling stories about RFK Jr.’s falcons. Finally, we dissect the press briefings around the latest assassination attempt, picking apart the muddy narratives to ask the obvious question: was the agent actually hit by friendly fire? Oh, and we finally crossed 12,000 subscribers. Let the cult initiation begin.

FCC orders review of Disney’s licenses after Trump’s Kimmel criticism

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump criticized Jimmy Kimmel over comments made ahead of the White House correspondents’ dinner. The FCC maintains that this is about a probe about Disney’s diversity practices.

    By Scott Nover

The Federal Communications Commission ordered a review of Disney’s broadcast licenses for local ABC stations following a new spate of criticism from President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump about the network’s late-night comedy host Jimmy Kimmel.

The FCC released the order on Tuesday afternoon saying it would launch an early review of the licenses as part of the agency’s investigation into the stations for possible “unlawful discrimination.” FCC chairman Brendan Carr had previously warned Disney that he would examine the company’s practices around diversity, equity and inclusion.

The Trump administration has been sparring with Kimmel since last year, when the late-night comedian was temporarily taken off the air for remarks following the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The White House has pummeled Kimmel for making a joke last week about the upcoming White House correspondents’ dinner.

Anna M. Gomez, the lone Democrat on the FCC, said the effort to bring in Disney’s licenses for an early review is illegal.

“This is unprecedented, unlawful, and going nowhere,” Gomez wrote in a statement. “It is a political stunt and it won’t stick. Companies should challenge it head-on. The First Amendment is on their side.”

Disney’s licenses were originally set to be renewed between 2028 and 2031.

James Comey indicted over 2025 social media post allegedly threatening Trump

The former FBI director shared a photo showing seashells arranged to write out “86 47,” which some saw as a call for violence against President Donald Trump.

    By Perry Stein

Former FBI director James B. Comey has been indicted on allegations that a photo he posted on social media in 2025 constituted a dangerous threat to the president.

The indictment by a federal grand jury in North Carolina marks the second time the Justice Department has pursued a criminal prosecution against Comey and is the law enforcement agency’s latest attempt to criminally charge one of President Donald Trump’s longtime political foes.

The two charges stem from a photo that Comey posted online last year showing seashells on a beach that were arranged to write out “86 47.”

Trump is the 47th president; “86” can mean banning or removing someone, but it can also be slang for killing a person.

The three-page indictment states that the seashells were “arranged in a pattern making out ‘86 47’, which a reasonable recipient who is familiar with the circumstances would interpret as a serious expression of an intent to do harm to the President of the United States.”

Comey has suggested that he stumbled on the shell formation during a walk along the beach and did not arrange the shells himself. There is generally a high legal threshold to charge someone with threatening a person based on their language, and legal experts said it would be tough for the Justice Department to build a strong case with just the seashells.

Comey was charged with one count of making threats against the president and another count of transmitting a threat against state lines.

The Justice Department declined to comment Tuesday afternoon. An attorney for Comey also declined to comment.

“Cool shell formation on my beach walk,” Comey wrote in the original Instagram post, which he quickly removed after receiving criticism that the phrase communicated the threat of violence. In a follow-up post, Comey wrote that he assumed the shells he saw “were a political message” but said he was not advocating violence.

“Just James Comey casually calling for my dad to be murdered,” Donald Trump Jr., the president’s son, wrote on social media after Comey’s seashell post.

Federal officials issued a warrant for Comey’s arrest Tuesday afternoon. It’s unclear whether federal authorities will allow the former FBI director to turn himself in and avoid a public arrest.

An initial court appearance for Comey has not yet been scheduled.

The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Louise Flanagan, a jurist in the Eastern District of North Carolina who was appointed to the bench by George W. Bush.

Comey was named FBI director by President Barack Obama. Trump fired Comey four years later over his handling of the investigation into the 2016 Trump campaign’s ties to Russia.

In a separate case, the Justice Department in September indicted Comey in the Eastern District of Virginia on two counts alleging that he lied to Congress. The Virginia grand jury rejected a third count sought by government prosecutors involving another alleged false statement.

The Virginia indictment against Comey centered on testimony he gave in September 2020 during a hearing on the FBI’s handling of the Russia investigation. The indictment was delivered over the rare objections of career prosecutors who insisted there was insufficient evidence to charge Comey.

Ultimately, a judge tossed the indictment, ruling that the Trump administration unlawfully appointed then-U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Lindsey Halligan to run the office and oversee the case.

The Justice Department has not attempted to bring that case to a grand jury again.

Trump has called for Comey’s prosecution for years.

When Erik S. Siebert, the Trump-appointed interim U.S. attorney who led the office before Halligan, concluded that the evidence was insufficient to charge, Trump forced him out of his job.

Last July, the Trump administration fired Comey’s daughter Maurene Comey — a well-regarded federal prosecutor in the Southern District of New York. She had worked on the criminal cases of Jeffrey Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell.

The younger Comey is suing the government over her firing, saying there was no reason to push her out of the job other than the president’s animosity toward her father or how officials perceived her political beliefs.

The indictment against James Comey comes as acting attorney general Todd Blanche aggressively seeks to bring cases against the president’s foes. Blanche took over leadership of the Justice Department this month after Trump fired Attorney General Pam Bondi, in part because the president was frustrated that she struggled to bring cases against his political enemies.

Trump’s face to be included on US passports to mark America’s 250th anniversary, report says

After adding his face to U.S. National Parks passes, President Donald Trump is now reportedly planning to put his image on another federal document: the U.S. Passport.

The State Department is reportedly finalizing a “radical redesign” of the passport that will include an image of Trump from his second inaugural portrait, according to the Bulwark.

The new design would be a part of plans to mark the United States’ 250th anniversary.

A State Department official was quoted by CNN as saying that the passport featuring Trump’s face “will be the default passport out of the Washington Passport Agency when available” for people renewing their passports in person. “Online options or other locations will maintain existing passport design,” they added.

Not only will Trump have his face on two coins, the Treasury Department also announced he would be the first sitting president to have his signature added onto American paper currency.

*Everything with his face or name on it will be worthless.

Kid Rock flies in Army helicopter weeks after flights near his house drew scrutiny

On social media Monday night, Hegseth posted photos of himself and Kid Rock at the base. “Kid Rock is a patriot and huge supporter of our troops,” Hegseth wrote.

Sean Parnell, the Pentagon’s top spokesman, said the flights supported a “community relations event” for a White House-led initiative, called Freedom 250, that is coordinating events for America’s 250th anniversary commemoration.

“Robert ‘Kid Rock’ Ritchie participated in multiple troop touches with service members and filmed videos for Memorial Day, America’s 250th birthday, and for his Freedom 250 tour,” Parnell said in a statement.
