Lift Every Voice and Sing: The history, the lyrics and the impact (cnn.com)

In 1900, when “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was composed, Black Americans were teetering on a fulcrum of history. The visibility and influence of African-American traditions was growing, but Reconstruction efforts had failed to provide widespread opportunities for financial and educational advancement. Moreover, racism stood ready to close any door Black achievers dared to open.
Among the Black leaders of the day, education, artistic excellence and the power of Black communities of faith were both sources of strength and precious keys to progress. To many men and women like the Johnson brothers, who managed to find success, the rise of one Black American helped lift up all.
In this way, “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was at one time a history, a proclamation and a vision for the future. It immediately resonated with Black communities and institutions.
In 1919, the NAACP proclaimed it the “Negro National Anthem,” a full 12 years before “The Star Spangled Banner” was adopted as the national anthem under President Herbert Hoover. It is an omnipresent part of African American worship traditions and an enduring refrain for great Black artists.
But the hymn’s truest legacy is best expressed by James Weldon Johnson himself. Among the pages of a 1935 collection of his poems, Johnson recalls what happened after the hymn was first performed by a chorus of 500 schoolchildren from the Johnsons’ hometown of Jacksonville, Florida.
“Shortly afterwards my brother and I moved away from Jacksonville to New York, and the song passed out of our minds,” he writes. “But the school children of Jacksonville kept singing it; they went off to other schools and sang it; they became teachers and taught it to other children. Within twenty years it was being sung over the South and in some other parts of the country … The lines of this song repay me in an elation, almost of exquisite anguish, whenever I hear them sung by Negro children.”
The phenomenon Johnson describes is the central animus of countless music traditions unfolding back through human history: Someone heard it, was moved by it, and kept on singing.

  2. ray’s version a tad more upbeat

  3. Juneteenth a nice time to celebrate so many, like this on CBS Sunday Morning yesterday…

One of Los Angeles’ most revered architects, Paul Revere Williams (1894-1980) designed homes and hotels known for their grace and elegance, as well as commercial buildings in many styles – some 3,000 buildings in all. Yet he made his name at a time when an African American architect was not expected to succeed. Correspondent Mark Whitaker examines the mark Williams left on Hollywood, and on the field of architecture.

He designed the Beverly Hills Hotel but couldn’t stay there.

Juneteenth is a new federal holiday but has long been celebrated : NPR

Americans have been celebrating Juneteenth this weekend, the third year since the holiday was given federal status by President Biden in 2021.
The date commemorates the fall of slavery in Galveston, Texas, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863 to free enslaved Black people held in the Confederacy.
    […]
But there are also concerns that corporate money-grabs taking advantage of the day could potentially weaken the gravity of such a historic event.
“The significance of it becoming an official holiday is really the fact that it raised awareness of Juneteenth beyond communities that had [already] been commemorating Juneteenth. Beyond that, it seems that the significance, unfortunately, also brings with it some commodification of that day and sort of commercialization of that day as well,” said Amara Enyia, a public policy expert in Chicago.
Just last year, big-box retailers like Walmart came under fire for a spread of Juneteenth-themed products deemed tasteless and appropriative by many.
And politically, the holiday has been weaponized by some Republicans as part of an ongoing culture war that claims truthful acknowledgments of race and racism are a ploy to demonize white Americans.
Despite these controversies, for many Monday is an opportunity to reflect on America and its history, as well as consider what the future might hold.
“Juneteenth celebrations are a chance for this country, for the United States to rethink not only its origins, but the relationship of everybody who lives in this country to each other,” said Greg Carr, associate professor of Africana Studies at Howard University.
“In many ways, Juneteenth symbolically becomes a litmus test for the possibilities of this country.”

  5. Uh. Yeah. Better late than never…

The National Archives plans to place the Emancipation Proclamation on permanent public display in its Rotunda alongside the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

  6. craig, been a really really long long time since i’ve visited DC hallowed halls of history.

with regard to the display of the original documents of the constitution and bill of rights do they also include prominent display of the rest of the amendments, particularly the 14th and 19th amendments? or are women (white, black or purple) still being historically ignored and in the shadows?

  7. https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/17/health/maternal-health-crisis-medicaid-postpartum-coverage/index.html

“Texas has joined a growing number of states extending the period in which new moms can qualify for Medicaid insurance after giving birth, offering coverage beyond the required 60 days postpartum to 12 months.”

“Last year, in an effort to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity in the United States, the Biden-Harris administration encouraged states to extend Medicaid’s postpartum insurance coverage requirements from two months after birth to a full 12 months.”

    Finally, getting on board…

“On Friday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law House Bill 12, which extends the duration of Medicaid coverage provided postpartum to a full year…”

“The rate of severe maternal morbidity – or pregnancy and childbirth complications – has increased in Texas.”

“The total number of women who died of maternal causes in the United was 1,205 in 2021, up from previous years: 658 in 2018, 754 in 2019 and 861 in 2020.”

    Important…

“Medicaid coverage of community-based providers such as doulas and midwives can improve health outcomes for pregnant and postpartum people, especially those who are low-income and people of color,” she said. “Research shows doula and midwifery care is associated with healthy birth outcomes including lower cesarean rates, fewer obstetric interventions, fewer complications, decreased likelihood of preterm birth, and more.”

    Uh-hmmm…

“Abortion beyond six weeks is banned in Texas – one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the developed world – which led lawmakers to debate the language used in HB 12, ultimately including an amendment clarifying that the extended Medicaid health coverage is “for mothers whose pregnancies end in the delivery of the child or end in natural loss of the child. This does not include pregnancies that end through elective abortion.”

“Medicaid postpartum coverage extension is different from full Medicaid expansion in a state.
When it comes to coverage before pregnancy, Ranji said, there appear to be higher rates of coverage before pregnancy in states that have adopted full Medicaid expansion.”

Now, to feed, house and educate everyone. Greg? Greg!

  8. Thanks, Union soldiers, is more like it. Texas was hush-hush about emancipation then, like they are now trying to squash CRT.

  9. https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/19/media/prince-harry-meghan-spotify-bill-simmons-intl-scli/index.html

“Spotify executive and popular podcaster Bill Simmons has hit out at Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, labeling them “grifters,” after their multi-year partnership with Spotify ended on Friday.”

“The F**king Grifters.’ That’s the podcast we should have launched with them. I have got to get drunk one night and tell the story of the Zoom I had with Harry to try and help him with a podcast idea. It’s one of my best stories … F**k them. The grifters.”

“What does he do? It’s one of those things where it’s like, what’s your talent? Why are we listening to you? So you were born in a royal family and then you left … You live in f**king Montecito and you just like, you sell documentaries and podcasts and nobody cares what you have to say about anything unless you talk about the royal family and you just complain about them.”

After watching the coronation of Charles III last month, and clips of the Trouping of the Colours this weekend, it all looks really ridiculous. Maybe it’s because the Queen’s coronation photos/film were in black and white, and maybe her persona held more clout, but it now looks like cosplay. The outfits and the rituals are now more difficult to take seriously. The UK gets a lot of money from tourism thanks to the royals. Aside from tradition and tourism, I don’t know that Charles III will be seen as the leader his mother was during times of crisis. How would they ever go about dissolving the monarchy?

  10. What better way to understand Juneteenth than to read the words of those who were there. Just ordinary people in the midst of an extraordinary time. The Bulwark website picked 5 stories for today and titled it
    Juneteenth, “The Day Freedom Came”
    Below is one of them

When the war ended mother went to old marster and told him she was goin’ to leave. He told her she could not feed all her children, pay house rent, and buy wood, to stay on with him. Marster told father and mother they could have the house free and wood free, an’ he would help them feed the children, but mother said, “No, I am goin’ to leave. I have never been free and I am goin’ to try it. I am goin’ away and by my work and the help of the Lord I will live somehow.” Marster then said, “Well stay as long as you wish, and leave when you get ready, but wait until you find a place to go, and leave like folks.” Marster allowed her to take all her things with her when she left. The white folks told her goodbye.

—Hannah Plummer, enslaved in North Carolina, interviewed in North Carolina, circa 1937, Federal Writers’ Project

The Federal Writers project was a new deal program that went out and documented ordinary people. One of the projects was the “Slave Narrative Project”. You can go to the library of congress and read their stories, just search for “Slave Narrative Project”.

  11. Juneteenth in Texas is a celebration of a one year delay of emancipation being found out.
Elected officials in Texas have been creepy for a looooong time

  12. https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/18/opinions/fort-bragg-confederate-base-names-desantis-pence-obeidallah/index.html

“Fort Bragg became Fort Liberty earlier this month as part of a push to remove the names of Confederate leaders from military bases in the wake of protests over the police killing of George Floyd.”

“Vowing to revert back to the name of Fort Bragg, DeSantis declared June 9 at North Carolina’s GOP state convention: “It’s an iconic name and iconic base, and we’re not gonna let political correctness run amok in North Carolina.” At the same Republican gathering, Pence echoed that pledge a day later, stating, “We will end the political correctness in the hallways of the Pentagon, and North Carolina will once again be home to Fort Bragg.”

“While Bragg graduated from West Point and served in the US military at one point, by the time of the Civil War, he owned a Louisiana sugar plantation and 105 enslaved people. Confederate President Jefferson Davis asked Bragg to leave his plantation and serve as a general.”

“Bragg led armed forces that waged war on US troops.”

I guess that’s DuhSantis’ and the whitest man’s way of celebrating Juneteenth? Just look at those Republicans fly their ideological Confederate flag. The next time one of them points their finger at Dems re: slavery, they should realize three fingers are pointing back at themselves.

  13. Having returned from a location in a deep red, hate everything that is not covered in Confederate battle flags, with an American flag, Gadsden flag, sfb flags (many of those), and a lot of messages of hate to Obama, I just get tickled by the little issue of a “bad word, bad word, bad word, more bad words” holiday for those “whole lotta bad words”.  Yup, the holiday to p off a lot of white folk.

Truth is I think this is a wonderful holiday that a large percentage of Americans should enjoy and the rest of us learn about and share the happiness.

Oh, yeah, what about a holiday for White people? Tell me one, just one. I said Columbus day.  The reaction was not one of happiness for old lost on the globe guy.

  14. Yeah, I was watching TV at someone’s house, when a State Farm ad came on.  They were really agitated because the original, white “Jake” was replaced by a black actor.   They seemed even more upset when I didn’t see any problem with it.   This person has a master’s degree, so  it’s not a matter of formal education.

They are, however, feeling that they are not as well-off as they were; they need to blame someone.   That is why the Republicans are going all in on their “anti-woke” garbage.

Republicans are fear-mongering to create civil unrest and keep the focus off of the corporations and billionaires who own them.

Dems need to focus on that message, as well as a implementing corrections of the wealth gap.    Elizabeth Warren is the person to handle that through-line, if her own party will only listen.

  16. https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/13/politics/desantis-money-super-pac-transfer/index.html

“The Florida political committee once controlled by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis transferred $82.5 million last month to a super PAC supporting his presidential campaign…”

“…makes official an unprecedented effort by DeSantis allies to test the limits of campaign finance laws to benefit a presidential contender.”

“The Campaign Legal Center, a watchdog group, has already filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commision, flagging the expected transfer as potentially illegal.”

“It’s unclear whether the FEC can – or will – step in. A similar case arose during the 2020 election, concerning the management of funds by GOP Rep. Byron Donalds. The FEC took no enforcement action in that case.”

“In recent weeks, DeSantis has disassociated from his state committee; his chairperson stepped down and a new chairperson, state Sen. Blaise Ingoglia, a DeSantis ally, now has stewardship over the leftover funds. The committee, formerly called Friends of Ron DeSantis, changed its name to the Empower Parents PAC. And its website says the reformed political committee “supports the national advancement of issues and candidates committed to protecting parental rights in education.”

“Under DeSantis, the Florida Department of State quietly changed its longstanding guidance that for years advised Florida political committees that they could not make contributions to out-of-state entities, including federal candidates and political action committees”

“Versions of the handbook dating back to 2016 read, “No. A Florida political committee must use its funds solely for Florida political activities.” The version for the 2024 cycle, however, advises, “A Florida political committee may make contributions to an out-of-state political entity that engages solely in non-coordinated expenditures.”

  17. https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/19/business/hotez-joe-rogan-elon-musk-spotify-rfk-vaccine/index.html

“A prominent vaccine scientist said he was accosted outside of his home after a Twitter exchange with podcaster Joe Rogan, who challenged him to debate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. over the weekend.”

“Rogan then replied, offering to donate $100,000 to a charity of Hotez’s choice if he would debate RFK Jr. on Rogan’s show “with no time limit” in a tweet that has now been viewed over 50 million times.”

“Hotez replied that Rogan had his contact information and said, “I’m always willing to speak with you.”

“He’s afraid of a public debate, because he knows he’s wrong,” Twitter owner Elon Musk tweeted in response to Rogan, who claimed Hotez’s response was a “non answer.”

“I will add $150,000 to @joerogan’s wager so now $250,000 can go to charity and the public can hear an open debate on an important topic,” billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman tweeted.”

“Investor Mark Cuban defended Hotez, jumping in the Twitter debate. “Trying to bully Dr Hotez is ridiculous,” Cuban tweeted, accusing Musk and Rogan of acting in their own self interest.”

  18. It was in a strawberry scratch & sniff sleeve.  I wanted that record so much, for the novelty, but mostly so I didn’t have to wait for it in the radio.

  19. …bit more of the Wu to complete the circle, a lyrical exposition on the history of the slave trade 🕉️

  21. https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/19/europe/navalny-prison-trial-extremism-intl/index.html

“Jailed opposition leader Alexey Navalny appeared before a Russian court Monday to defend himself against fresh charges of extremism, in a trial that could extend his prison term by decades.”

“Just hours after the trial began, Navalny announced the start of a campaign aimed at turning Russians against the war in Ukraine.”

“I want to use this day not to arouse sympathy for myself and other political prisoners. I want to call everyone to action and use this day to announce our new, very important project. Big agitation machine. Truth machine. We do not just want to do it, but we will definitely do it in order to join forces in the fight against Putin’s lies and Kremlin hypocrisy,” said Navalny, according to the statement.”
