June Moon Swoon

In Photos: Strawberry Moon Skims Horizon In Once-In-A-Generation Event

The most southerly full moon for 19 years — the strawberry moon — rose late at night into twilight skies on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. The rare occurrence won’t happen again until 2043.

[2043? Let’s hope we’re all still here on the Trail for the 38th anniversary.]

Key Facts

On Tuesday, June 10, the full strawberry moon appeared on the southeast horizon during dusk, as seen around the world. It turned 10% full at 3:45 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

The sixth full moon of 2025 rose farther to the southeast than at any time since 2006, skimming the southern horizon and setting in the southwest.

It was the first full moon of meteorological summer in the Northern Hemisphere and of fall in the Southern Hemisphere. However, astronomical summer and winter, respectively, doesn’t begin until the solstice on June 21, 2025.

June’s strawberry moon is named after the ripening of the berries in the Northern Hemisphere, though it’s also called the flower and rose moon.

The Virtual Telescope Project will provide a live feed via telescopes of the moonrise on Wednesday, June 11, which is set to be just as spectacular. It begins at 15:30 p.m. EDT (1930 UTC).

  1. President Trump claims he’s not throwing himself a birthday parade, he sent Marines to Los Angeles in a major escalation of his attack on the city’s residents, and taxpayers are already on the hook for $134 million to cover the military deployment.

  3. kimmel in LA last night

Jimmy talks about what’s actually happening in Los Angeles right now for those who believe the city is some kind of totalitarian hellscape, protesters voicing their opposition to Trump’s disgusting and unnecessary abuse of power, Trump going around Governor Newsom to call in 4,000 troops from the National Guard and 700 active duty Marines, insisting that paid protesters are causing problems, creating a distraction from the fact that just a few days ago Elon Musk tweeted that Trump is in the Epstein files, and we take a look back at what past Presidents have said about immigration.

  4. however his honeymoon was over weeks before the moon june spoon swoon according to this feb article https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/this-was-the-week-trump-s-honeymoon-ended/ar-AA1ycx6y

Every president enjoys a “honeymoon phase,” with some lasting longer than others. Barack Obama had a relatively long one amid the euphoria of the United States electing its first Black president, but those feelings began to dissipate toward the summer amid the Great Recession. Joe Biden’s lasted until the U.S. exit from Afghanistan and inflation began to hit Americans’ pocketbooks.
But Trump already seems to show signs of weakness. A Gallup survey revealed that he has a historically low initial approval rating compared to other U.S. presidents, though it’s higher than it was when he took office in 2017. And a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed that since taking office, Trump’s disapproval rating jumped from 39 percent to 46 percent, while his approval rating dipped two percentage points.
This week marked the end of Trump’s honeymoon period. First, his administration’s announcement of a freeze on federal grants and loans set off a national panic, giving Democrats potent ammunition to attack the Trump White House.

  5. Desi Lydic has the latest updates from the L.A. ICE protests, including Trump’s outsized military deployment to the city, which defies both California Governor Gavin Newsom and the… “P***y Comitatus Act”? Plus, one soldier sends a letter home from the frontlines of the L.A. war.

  6. Not so long ago, nor far away, and possibly the reason for more executive overreach aka unconstitutionality…

  7. https://nypost.com/2025/06/11/us-news/ice-preparing-raids-in-5-dem-states-as-emotional-gavin-newsom-delivers-warning/

ICE preparing raids in 5 Dem states as emotional Newsom warns California ‘may be first but it clearly won’t end here’

Newsom then slammed the commander in chief for deploying “more than 700 active US Marines” into the city, who he claimed are exclusively “trained in foreign combat, not domestic law enforcement.”

“We honor their service. We honor their bravery. But we do not want our streets militarized by our own Armed Forces. Not in LA. Not in California. Not anywhere,” he said.

The tactical units are set to deploy into New York City, Philadelphia, Northern Virginia, Chicago, and Seattle, MSNBC reported.

A timeline of when the units are expected to enter the cities has not been revealed.

*Weird that Orange Adolf would create a very visible leadership test to spotlight Dem candidates for 2028.
Ah, but Elon posted that teaser about the Epstein files, so he had to something big and stupid to distract everyone.
I mean, what was Orange Chickensh/t Taco to do?

ps – As Pogo/eaux/et posted last night, rain is expected in DC for Saturday.

  8. https://apnews.com/article/national-guard-troops-immigration-dhs-raids-8cbec5b0872a57b594fd75dce57f4dd0

The Department of Homeland Security has asked for 20,000 National Guard troops to assist with immigration roundups across the country, and the Pentagon is reviewing the unusual request, a U.S. official confirmed to The Associated Press.

How the troops would be used may depend on whether they remain under state governors’ control. Under the Posse Comitatus Act, troops under federal orders cannot be used for domestic law enforcement, but units under state control can.

    *Estimated cost: Over $3 BILLION

A ton of money to ruin lives, not only of the immigrants and their families, but restaurant owners, farmers, construction business, nursing care facilities. It will cost TRILLIONS.

That giant sucking sound is EVERYTHING the tRUMPsky mob does.

  9. LP drug me outside to see the moon last night. It was awfully pretty. I wasn’t aware it was a named moon, thought its color came from the haze that caused dusk to be orangy. Now I know.

    Oh, and from WaPo:

President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend a performance Wednesday of “Les Misérables” at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, whose leadership he has overhauled. The event is serving as a Republican fundraiser. Some cast members have threatened to boycott.

The asshat could fuck up a steel ball.

Trump official acknowledges 9 detainee deaths in ICE custody

Congress has approved funding for 41,500 detention beds but ICE is detaining 52,000 people, which could lead the agency to running out of money within two months. Underwood called the goal of removing 1 million people per year an “incredibly risky strategy that sets you up for failure.”

Todd Lyons, ICE’s acting director, denied the agency would run out of funding. Money could potentially be shifted from other agencies such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency or Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.

*Aaaand that’s where your FEMA money is going to go.

ps – This was a month ago, so we’re 30+ days out. That’s why 🍊🐓💩🌮 is calling up the troops. That’s why they’re trying Gitmo, again.

  11. The MAGAt yahtzees have co-opted “Do You Hear The People Sing?” because they are the most un-self-aware pack of douchenozzles currently breathing air.

Change the lyrics, don’t sing, turn your backs to the audience of Republican scum, if any of the stand-ins are POC make it as racially diverse as possible…oooh, and switch roles (Jean Valjean played by a woman, Fantine and Colette played by males in drag)…make the n@zis squirm.

  12. Sorry to hear about Brian Wilson. Brilliant musician, songwriter and producer.

Sorry to hear about the weather in DC for the birthday parade. (Heheh)

  13. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/weather/2025/06/11/army-parade-and-no-kings-protests-rain-saturday-forecast/84150452007/

A festival will begin on the National Mall from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The parade begins at 6:30 p.m. and is expected to end at 7:30 p.m. A fireworks show will begin at 9:45 p.m.

As many as 6,600 soldiers, seven bands and 150 vehicles including tanks, will roll down the parade route, the U.S. Army said. The celebration will also include several aerial performances from aircraft such as, the UH-60 Black Hawk, AH-64 Apache and the CH-47 Chinook.

According to the National Weather Service, the day will be mostly cloudy with a high of near 88 degrees. Showers are likely after 2 p.m. with a chance of precipitation of 60%. For the fireworks, showers and possibly a thunderstorm are likely between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m.

*Hmmm, 88 degrees and rainy. It is a swamp, after all. Hope the humidity agitates his bone spurs.

  14. Trump’s “Big Beautiful” Energy Plan Will Burn Your Wallet

“…higher power generation costs from using coal or natural gas, along with other price increases stemming from IRA repeal, would result in household energy costs rising by more than $33 billion annually by 2035, compared to a scenario in which the IRA was left intact. That works out to roughly $250 more per year per household. Other analysts came to similar conclusions: The Rhodium Group, an independent policy analysis firm, estimates that average household costs could be as much as $290 higher per year by the same date. Princeton University’s ZERO Lab projects that energy costs could grow even higher: Their estimates show that, in a decade, annual household prices will be $270 to $415 higher under the GOP plan.”

Trump Puts Iran Nuclear Deal in Doubt, Raising Risk of War

While saying that the United States will not allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon, Trump said it would be “nicer” to avoid war. Nonetheless, the Pentagon is preparing for alternate scenarios. General Michael Kurilla, the outgoing head of U.S. Central Command, told lawmakers on Tuesday that strike plans had been submitted to the White House in the event negotiations collapse.

US Embassy in Middle East Prepares to Evacuate After Warning From Iran

The United States Embassy in Baghdad is preparing for an ordered evacuation amid rising security threats in the region, an Iraqi security official and a U.S. source told Reuters on Wednesday.

The State Department’s decision to order the evacuation of all nonessential staff from the embassy in Iraq comes after Iranian Defense Minister General Aziz Nasirzadeh warned that Tehran would target U.S. bases in the area if hostilities spike or nuclear negotiations with Washington break down.

  18. …besides what the animals are getting the garden is a wonderland. i guess the animals help make it a wonderland, but i wish they’d say some peas for me!

Oh, and all mammals i’ve ever encountered like oats- if an animal eats it, it’s food

  19. RIP Brian Wilson. He made great 60’s music. Too bad he got Harry Nilsson on heavy drugs.

His death now, surprised me, I thought he died a couple years ago after watching a bio on his life.

  20. Brian Wilson helped give us Wilson Phillips. No matter what you think of them as a group, the refrain of “Hold On” may become increasingly important to us.

  21. *But this song from Hamilton is stuck in my head.

“You say the price of my love’s
Not a price that you’re willing to pay You cry in your tea which you hurl In the sea when you see me go by
    Why so sad?
Remember we made an arrangement when you went away
    Now you’re making me mad
Remember, despite our estrangement, I’m your man
You’ll be back, soon you’ll see You’ll remember you belong to me You’ll be back, time will tell You’ll remember that I served you well

    Oceans rise, empires fall
We have seen each other through it all

And when push comes to shove I will send a fully-armed battalion
To remind you of my love”

  22. If performers of athletes (or anyone) has to do a meet & greet with Orange Chickensh/t Taco, they should just crop dust him.

  23. *Really enjoying Hamilton tonight.

    “Oceans rise, empires fall
Next to Washington, they all look small
    All alone, watch them run
They will tear each other into pieces
Jesus Christ, this will be fun”

  24. YouTube thumbnail

“I will fight the fight and win the war For your love, for your praise And I’ll love you till my dying days When you’re gone, I’ll go mad So don’t throw away this thing we had
‘Cause when push comes to shove I will kill your friends and family
To remind you of my love”

  26. so there is something known as a “rhubarb forcing pot”, made of terra-cotta in the shape of an inverted vase, with no bottom and a lid with a hole in it to let in a small amount of sunlight, which when placed over the plant for a period of a week or three, forces it to grow long stalks to seek the light, which is a fortuitous phenomenon as the stalks are the desired part of the plant

Not owning such a niche object, and both unwilling and unlikely to find a retailer for such a thing in my area, i procured a box from the hardware store for two dollars (i don’t order many things that come in large boxes), and folded the top flaps slightly to allow limited sunlight to shine in, and…

    it’s working! 🥳
