It very well could be that the Clinton’s are too ambitious (signal Julius Caesar). Rising from barely middle class they may be greedy. When you peer too closely at some of the interrelationships of sex, wealth and power they may just have played a little too fast and loose with all that is noble.
Now that I have disclosed the awful truth why is this couple so hated beyond all reason to the exclusion of the exact same actions as virtually ever politician who has ever existed on the face of the earth?
More importantly this year, why is the woman in this mix expected to dance backwards in high heels to prove, that in her absolute superiority, the men shouldn’t be jealous of her mind, accomplishments, and basic decency for having a Conservative Brain and a Liberal heart.
Did George W. Bush “lose” 21 million emails?
Does Trump & other politicians get six figure fees for speaking? Did Trump “endorsements” for his institute earn more than a million while bilking others out of their life savings?
Then there are the sex scandals. Let’s face it: The men (all of the them) have used wealth and power to acquire willing or unwilling comfort, companionship and cohabitation. The lady has been married to one man for 40 years.
In eleven days, there will be an election. On one side we have an ignorant and arrogant man with absolutely no knowledge of the world and issues, whose only qualification for the office is a bunch of right wing haters, who has to pay people to praise him because no one he knows actually likes him. The woman, whatever her failings, is brilliant, accomplished, and has decades of experience — and genuinely liked by all who have known and worked with her.
It’s all politics folks. Make the best of it and go vote.

Hillary Clinton addresses the FBI announcing they were investigating new emails to see if they are connected to her private email server in a short event in Des Moines,
and from wapo:
Clinton told reporters Friday night in Iowa that she learned of the newly discovered emails only after the letter to Congress was made public.
“I’m confident whatever [the emails] are will not change the conclusion reached in July,” she said. “Therefore, it’s imperative that the bureau explain this issue in question, whatever it is, without any delay.”
Asked about the connection to Weiner, Clinton said: “We’ve heard these rumors. We don’t know what to believe.”
Jamie, well done!
Jamie, what patd said.
Sums it up perfectly.
must share two new words learned today… well they’re really old words but new to me and ripe for mischief for this election (a euphemism itself today):
cacophemism and dysphemism
Btw, the fbi directer is appointed by the president, confirmed by the Senate and answers to the attorney general. The FBI director can be fired for cause, the president can ask for his resignation, or can be impeached. Bill Clinton fired William Sessios, and numerous directors have served short terms.
Comey has certainly become quite the writer. Two letters in two days, one to congress, one to FBI employees, both pushed out to the press. Both will affect the election. Felt he had to? He’s acknowledged that the FBI doesn’t normally do such things so close to an election. My question is simple. Why now? Contrary to his letter to his staff’s intent, it sounds like an excuse rather than an explanation. But then again, I’m pretty skeptical, but you knew that.
Facts are irrelevant, it’s perception that matters in politics. Having your opponent’s name negatively mixed up in the top story of every broadcast is a Thank-You-Jesus gift. This applies to all sides; it’s a game everyone plays. Not making excuses but the lowest hanging fruit is the easiest to pick.
*Cue the surrogates*
Unfortunately the Clintons are sticky lollipops walking through a field of dandelion puffs.
And so it goes …..
Absolutely important to remember amid all the emails sent to her or passed through her, NOT ONE EMAIL FROM HILLARY SHOWED BAD CHARACTER OR INTENT. She made a self-admitted mistake using a private server. THAT’S IT
Those she trusted who have served her, some well and some ill, have made errors, but Hillary has not unless you dive for the “judgement” charge. Are you prepared to demand the same from every single male politician in and around DC? If not, the charges are a bunch of hooey cooked up by those who for various reasons want to destroy the lady.
While trying to comprehend what Coumey did I have read everything about it. One conclusion is something very scary that has been on the dirt for a long time. The occasional spoken word or phrase by Republicans which makes no sense. Though linking Wiener to Clinton through Huma is almost impossible, it was a standard of the Republicans talking points for a long time. All of a sudden here it is (leaked) by the FBI. The letter makes no mention of this but several media types are stating it as fact from the FBI.
Why now?
I have written several comments, deleted before hitting “POST”. I have written several articles, deleted before hitting “SAVE”. I am unable to come to any conclusions, even the conspiracy hypothesis above is not worthy of repeating (but I will anyway).
Will this “hurt” HRC? Maybe. Maybe not. Most of us have already made up our minds. What quantity of voters are so on the edge that they would switch to the orange blob because of email that went between her aide and her freaking nuts husband? I do not know. I suspect it will not be enough to change the outcome of the election. But, this is one of those hits that I hope brings more supporters to the conclusion that Hillary needs our vote more than ever.

Given that a director of the FBI put his thumb on the scales yesterday to influence the outcome of an election, I find your post rather rosey. This election is one for the books. The way The Republicans hve used all three branches of government to bring down their opponent is …. ( there are no words) In a world of hyperbole now even the basic facts sound unbelievable.
Our basic problem is the setting President will do nothing, when he should have Comey setting in the oval office right now explaining his unforgivable behavior.
Jack
First things first. Last night’s game was baseball at its best.
Second, for how long has the laptop been in the FBI’s hands. How long does it take for them to do forensics on such an object if the Wiener-perp has been apprehended? Why are they opening communications that have nothing to do with that perp’s case? Where was/is their warrant?
pogo, thanks for the link to comey’s note to FBI employees. posting it for parsing purposes:
To all:
This morning I sent a letter to Congress in connection with the Secretary Clinton email investigation. Yesterday, the investigative team briefed me on their recommendation with respect to seeking access to emails that have recently been found in an unrelated case. Because those emails appear to be pertinent to our investigation, I agreed that we should take appropriate steps to obtain and review them.
Of course, we don’t ordinarily tell Congress about ongoing investigations, but here I feel an obligation to do so given that I testified repeatedly in recent months that our investigation was completed. I also think it would be misleading to the American people were we not to supplement the record. At the same time, however, given that we don’t know the significance of this newly discovered collection of emails, I don’t want to create a misleading impression. In trying to strike that balance, in a brief letter and in the middle of an election season, there is significant risk of being misunderstood, but I wanted you to hear directly from me about it.
Jim Comey
compare the above to his letter to congress [as published in ny times] in which he writes it is “to supplement my previous testimony.”
Pogo,
Because the Fed can meet any time it wants, and meetings of the FOMC basically ratify what the money markets are saying on an anticipatory basis, you should have already made your decision re your CDs. But, that’s not a market that I participate in beyond using it as a one of a bundle of tools for pricing equities.
Comey’s last sentence reminds me of the apology speech that Patton was forced to make to all the troops under his command.
hopefully, media will get comey to expand on this:
…given that we don’t know the significance of this newly discovered collection of emails, I don’t want to create a misleading impression. In trying to strike that balance, in a brief letter and in the middle of an election season, there is significant risk of being misunderstood…
For those wanting Comey’s head, looks like the president can fire him:
In fact, the only president to remove an FBI director since the 1972 law establishing new rules was none other than Bill Clinton, who dismissed William Sessions for misuse of department resources.
Comey has 7 years left in his term.
Methinks Flatus has the point so far in this thread. When law enforcement gets a warrant to search something, and I cannot think the Wiener voluntarily surrendered his laptop, the warrant must specify what is being sought. In this case any wee wee pics or posts sent to a minor female. Warrants do not usually have terms like “anything possibly illegal or associated with any past investigations that have been suspended or closed and have nothing to do with this investigation”.
I’m a bit older and have always been a thinker. I can usually trust by gut instinct / whatever that means. In this case it will energize some Trump supporters – although they’re going to vote anyway to keep Lucifer out of the White House. It will energize core Clinton supporters to get up and vote.
So – the ones in the middle: perhaps, just perhaps, if handled the right way by the Clinton campaign, will rise up and ask “OK – so where’s the beef?” (sorry Clara). I see three scenarios:
1. There’s nothing there except copies of old emails that the FBI already knows about.
2. There’s a bombshell there and we’ve got a 1pt race.
3. The FBI releases nothing (most likely scenario) as they can’t investigate 10K to 30K emails in a week; and it looks like a partisan attempt to fix an election.
Craig,
I don’t want his head, I want some way to make him do the perp walk and some time in prison. What he did was that serious. It was far more dangerous to the nation than anything We have ranted so far in this election. He is not stupid so he did it with full knowledge of what he was doing.
Jack
craig, more likely folks will clamor for huma’s head as hinted by rove and rcp according to bizpac:
Republican strategist Karl Rove appeared Friday on Fox News’ “On The Record” to say the new emails could contradict what Abedin has previously told the bureau in sworn testimony.
“So what we may have here is a question of her veracity, and she may be at risk of telling lies to federal officials,” Rove said, adding that it could result in charges of obstruction of justice or perjury.
“One key question for Hillary is, if this involves Huma, is it in her best interest for Huma Abedin tomorrow to say ‘I don’t want to be a distraction, I’m stepping away from the campaign here in order not to be a distraction.’”
Real Clear Politics’ Sean Trende was skeptical that Abedin would resign, saying it would likely add fuel to the fire when the Clinton campaign is more interested in making the story going away.
He then questioned whether Abedin “disappears from the campaign trail.”

Flatus
That last paragraph is a “the dog ate my homework excuse”.
The FBI is part of the executive department, his boss is Obama. He is not required to keep any congressional committee up to date on anything (executive privilege).
Jack
perhaps a better way to address whether questionable criminal/ethical comey behavior would be for lynch to appt a special prosecutor to investigate the obvious appearance or abuse of using his position to affect the election.
Comey’s explanation, Jack, is that he was obligated to inform Congress because in previous testimony he said would do that if new evidence surfaced. But all I’ve found him saying is that he would consider any new evidence, no vow to report it to Congress before even looking at it.
Pat don’t get distracted with side issues that don’t matter or blame the victim.
This is purely about the behavior of an FBI director. It was inexcusable.
And as for your other comment, a special prosecutor, good idea, someone needs to be held accountable.
Jack
Jamie: Great post reflecting all of our fear and frustration over this election. I’m not so sure it is just politics though. Yes, politics is a nasty business and it has become nastier, or at least more visibly nasty, in the age of technology. However, this election season seems to have gone beyond the pale. The Republican Party, an organization that has become dark and evil and strayed far from their original root beliefs, has put forth their choice to lead the country. This man is the most evil among them. His name is Donald Trump. He has somehow managed to stay outside the cross-hairs of the full brunt of the media while every time Hillary blows her nose it gets broadcast to the world with a negative slant. I can’t really call that politics. It may possibly be a turning point in our history and we might be too close to it right now to even give it a name.
One thing is for certain though, the only way to combat this right now is to get the vote out like never before. Once Hillary is President, I hope someone will take a serious, intelligent look at how we got to this dangerous place in history, this precipice!
That Comey memo has to be one of the most ludicrous explanations of what he’s doing possible! “I don’t want to create a misleading impression.” What the hell does he think he’s done??? He has something that may or may not be evidence of he knows not what, but he’s making it public anyway….Jesus wept!
Craig
That is the “dog ate my homework” statement. It shows just how little cover he really has. He is in the executive department. The only person he has a responsibility to report to is within the executive department and ultimately the President.
To keep a congressional committee in the loop on every twist and turn of an investigation?
Nonsense.
Jack
Jamie
Excellent post, so appreciated by me at this time..
I agree with Jack,”Republican’s so far have used all 3 branches of government to bring down their opponent”
Very scary thing. I’m not sure what President Obama could do? If he fired Comey it would be looked at like he’s helping HRC and the right wing noise lie machine would be that much louder.
It seems to me Comey will get away with this and voters will decide. As to the damage this has done to either side trusting the law enforcement officials in future, real problems here and no way to go back..
Granny
I actually hope there will be a big enough Hillary landslide that the snakes will go back under their rocks for some period of time and the once honorable Republican party might emerge from the insane asylum with some semblance of socially acceptable behavior.
What did Comey do wrong? His job? He may have done Clinton a favor when all is said and done, better now than later.
Agreed Jack, unless he can show testimony where he promised to do that I don’t see the justification for informing Congress at such an early stage, with no findings to report.
Two contrary thoughts: had he not informed Congress and it came out after Hillary’s election Republicans would say he was protecting her. Also, he probably expected it would be leaked anyway, so why not get out in front of it.
This was clumsily handled at best, but I can see the dilemma he was facing. Nothing in his background would suggest he’d want to help Trump, just can’t buy that one. If that were the case he had the chance to bring up charges a while ago.
I’m sure the guy would rather be chasing terrorists and bad guys, and not have this mess tossed in his lap in the first place.
Having said that, I’ve gotta get ready to go to Orlando. Will be there for Election Day.
Good post Jamie…
For weeks Trump has been tweeting about how unhappy FBI agents were with Comey and I think this waas a set up by Trumpsupporting FBI agents who threatened Comey with a whistle blower action if he didn;t do something before the election There is nothing in the emails at all, they know that.
Comey will end up the biggest victim of Trump
Yay Apaches
Jamie: Hope you’re right! I don’t know if they can recover from the mess they’ve created.
Holding rocks, ready to slam down on snake hidey holes 🙂
This story is not going well. Me thinks Comey has got some ‘splaining to do.
Nah, it’ll only get worse. We’ll see complete obstruction on the part of Congress, nothing will get done. Ongoing investigations and most likely an impeachment trial or two. The only way this will get cleaned out is if the American public gets so fed up they change out Congress. And that’s difficult at best considering the states have gerrymandered the heck out of the elections for house and senate.
Cue Dr Dean and the 50 state strategeri
Hiaasen: Rubio keeps eyes on the prize in 2020
Senator No-Show is campaigning hard to return to the Senate after telling Florida voters he wouldn’t run for re-election.
No one who has followed Marco Rubio’s political acrobatics was surprised by this 180-degree pirouette, which occurred soon after Donald Trump humiliated him in the state’s presidential primary. Nor is there any mystery to Rubio’s motive. Being in the Senate is the only way he can stay sufficiently visible to run for the White House again in four years.
When pressed, Rubio says he intends to serve the full term as a senator. Who believes that? There’s only one job he cares about, and he’s going to try again in 2020. Everybody’s aware of his awful attendance record, and that he dislikes the job. “I don’t know that ‘hate’ is the right word,” he told the Washington Post last year. “I’m frustrated.”
The Senate is no fun. It’s creaky and dysfunctional, but you’ve got to actually show up for work if you hope to change it….
apologies for length, but this from daily beast very good overview:
Kurt Eichenwald of Newsweek comes in to explain the Clinton email investigation nonsense
Kurt Eichenwald from Newsweek is a national treasure. He seems like the only reporter other than David Fahrenthold who investigates Trump. Now, he has jumped onto the Clinton email story and finds, surprise, that there is not much there.
Somehow, Eichenwald got hold of investigative reporters and spoke to people in government, and has the most comprehensive piece I’ve read.
Here are the high points:
1. This has nothing to do with Clinton. She is not implicated in any way.
2. It’s possible that one of her top aides could have problems, but Comey doesn’t even know if there is anything here or not.
The summary at the top:
Then the heavy details:
As for Comey, Eichenwald says he did what he had to do to amend his testimony before Congress, but really made a mess of it. While he is somewhat kind to Comey, his last paragraph is harsh.

last line in that daily beast piece linked above says it all:
So, after a day of panic, this all may prove to be nothing at all, except for a big black eye for Comey.
PatD, interesting read, looks like he was well fed by the Clinton camp. My first thought: All that loosey goosey email handling would be fine if she was working for the head of the Tea & Crumpets Commission instead of the chief diplomat for the planet’s most powerful nation. No crimes committed, just seriously dumb ass. Besides that, I agree with the writer’s conclusion.
Jamie…. great post!
I agree with sj… perceptions are everything in politics. But… Methinks those that think Trump will make American great again still believe it. And those that think the email thingy is nothing but a witch hunt still believe that. Those perceptions are now and until election day hardened, IMO.
I also think that Comey has calculated that it will look very bad if Obama does anything to him before the election. But come Nov. 9th… his ass should be grass.
Patd,
Good link. If this is correct, and it sounds plausible, Comey my wish to begin making plans for his transition into private life.
There better be something more in those emails than discussions of who will bring refreshments to the office party.
Off to our Southern Command now, Flatus & Sturg: I’ll be overhead in a few hours.
There is nothing in the emails and Comey is a goat
One of the big issues and sore spots of the most powerful city on Earth is the Metro, the train system, which has not been maintained since it was built. I console myself by reading how bad others have it. New York for instance. This morning I came across another, perhaps even more ill system, BART. This LA Times article seems to enjoy poking a little at San Francisco as the LA system is growing and doing quite well, except for needing riders.
The same story in SanFran as D.C.-Maryland-Virginia (DMV). Lack of funding because no one wants to pay for something. There it is county driven. Metro is state and district driven. I would think that California could create a state transportation division to deal with things, like dictating to the counties how much will be paid. For DMV it will require Congress to do something, and we know how they do not deal with anything.
Politically you do not see the candidates talking about the Metro. If asked about funding they think they heard someone call lunch from across the room and high tail it over there. The big issue is that the system was created to make the government work better by having federal employees get from home to work and back efficiently. The Congress funded the ride to make sure employees were not burdened by daily commuting expenses. The Republicans have effectively reduced the funding, including removing parking at the Metro garages ($5+/day) from being covered.
But, getting around D.C. is very easy if you ride it on non-rush hour times, 9:30am to 1:30pm and when the system is not single-tracking or shut down due to an electrical fire in one of the tunnels or stations.

this has been welling up for a while, some of her best friends worried “Clinton’s unconventional email arrangement had finally caught up to her and might imperil her presidential bid less than two weeks before Election Day.” (The Hill)
“I’m livid, actually,” one Clinton surrogate told The Hill. “This has turned into malpractice. It’s an unforced error at this point. I have no idea what Comey is up to but the idea this email issue is popping back up again is outrageous. It never should have occurred in the first place. Someone somewhere should have told her no. And they didn’t and now we’re all paying the price.”

daily beast:
Attorney General Loretta Lynch advised FBI Director James Comey against sending a letter to Congress about the review of new Hillary Clinton emails, The New Yorker reported Saturday. Citing an unnamed source in the Obama administration, the report said Lynch urged Comey against taking any actions that might sway the outcome of the Nov. 8 vote, in accordance with a longstanding practice in the department.

Vice President Joe Biden One-On-One with Smerconish. Full Interview #Smerconish
in case you couldn’r access it here’s some info from that new yorker article linked above:
According to the Administration official, Lynch asked Comey to follow Justice Department policies, but he said that he was obliged to break with them because he had promised to inform members of Congress if there were further developments in the case. He also felt that the impending election created a compelling need to inform the public, despite the tradition of acting with added discretion around elections. The Administration official said that Lynch and Justice Department officials are studying the situation, which he called unprecedented.
Matthew Miller, a Democrat who served as the public-affairs director at the Justice Department under Holder, recalled that, in one case, the department waited until after an election to send out subpoenas. “They didn’t want to influence the election—even though the subpoenas weren’t public,” he said. “People may think that the public needs to have this information before voting, but the thing is the public doesn’t really get the information. What it gets is an impression that may be false, because they have no way to evaluate it. The public always assumes when it hears that the F.B.I. is investigating that there must be something amiss. But there may be nothing here at all. That’s why you don’t do this.”
“Comey is an outstanding law-enforcement officer,” Miller said, “but he mistakenly thinks that the rules don’t apply to him. But there are a host of reasons for these rules.”
As Miller sees it, Comey’s “original sin” was the press conference he held in July regarding the Clinton e-mail investigation. At that press conference, Comey stated that the F.B.I. had found no reason to bring criminal charges against Clinton for using a private e-mail server to handle much of her State Department business, but that Clinton and her staff had been “extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive, extremely classified information.” Comey made clear that he had decided to make this comment without any sign-off from the Justice Department. Ordinarily, when no charges are brought, such matters are not exposed to public view, let alone addressed at press conferences

politico:
Joe Biden is at the top of the internal short list Hillary Clinton’s transition team is preparing for her pick to be secretary of state, a source familiar with the planning tells POLITICO.
…
Neither Clinton, nor her aides have yet told Biden. According to the source, they’re strategizing about how to make the approach to the vice president, who almost ran against her in the Democratic primaries but has since been campaigning for her at a breakneck pace all over the country in these final months.
“He’d be great, and they are spending a lot of time figuring out the best way to try to persuade him to do it if she wins,” said the source familiar with the transition planning.

“I am a US senator. I have a prediction — this is not a guarantee — and I’m not revealing inside intel,” said Kaine, who represents Virginia.
“I was in the Senate when the Republicans’ stonewalling around appointments caused the Senate Democratic majority to switch the vote threshold on appointments from 60 to 51. And we did it on everything but a Supreme Court justice.”
“If these guys think they’re going to stonewall the filling of that vacancy or other vacancies, then a Democratic Senate majority will say, ‘We’re not going to let you thwart the law.’ And so we will change the Senate rules to uphold the law that the court will be nine members.”
….
“There is certainly long historical precedent for a Supreme Court with fewer justices. I would note, just recently, that Justice (Stephen) Breyer observed that the vacancy is not impacting the ability of the court to do its job. That’s a debate that we are going to have,” Cruz told reporters in Colorado earlier this week, according to The Washington Post.
Kaine called Cruz’s comments “disingenuous.”
“Ted Cruz I think is being slightly disingenuous. The Constitution doesn’t set the size of the court. It sets a maximum, I think, of 15. But since the Judiciary Act of 1869, it’s been a nine-member court. That’s what the statute says,” Kaine said.
“We take an oath to uphold the law, that’s what we’re upholding. Congress could change it, if Congress wanted to and had the votes, but Congress won’t. So until Congress does, that’s the size of the court.”

BTW – We took Spencer to vote today. I was his official assistant. The only way I could get him into the polls was to put a ‘Trump’ hat and bandanna on him. But inside the voting booth, when I pointed to the “straight Democratic ticket” he went “woo woo woo” – and cast his vote.

Bloomberg:
The news was being grabbed as a kind of lifeline by some Republicans, as four Senate races for now-Republican-held seats are each separated by less than 3 percentage points in RealClearPolitics poll averages. Those contests are in New Hampshire, Missouri, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Democrats would need to win two of those seats plus three more — such as Republican-held seats in Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana where Democrats have been favored to win — and defend retiring Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid’s Nevada seat to take outright control of the chamber.
Whether Comey’s letter to lawmakers Friday ends up helping such down-ballot Republicans, or hurting Democrats, some independent political analysts say several Senate races are too close for it to not have an effect.
Thomas Mann, a congressional expert at the Brookings Institution in Washington, predicted that while Clinton may not be denied a victory, Comey has “unleashed a tiger” on Senate and other down-ballot races with his move just 11 days before the last day to vote, and “that may be his legacy.”
