It’s a Stupid Economy, Stupid

By PatD, a Trail Mix Contributor

CNN recapped the Trump economic speech and Elizabeth Warren decapitated it:

In addition to tax cuts, Trump also proposed a moratorium on financial regulations, which conservatives say hinder economic growth.

“Cut regulations massively,” @realDonaldTrump? No rules & no accountability means people get ripped off & markets blow up. Remember 2008?” Warren said. “A ‘moratorium’ on agency regulations means stopping new rules on shady payday lenders & too-big-to-fail banks, @realDonaldTrump.” …

“W/o rules, @realDonaldTrump, too many huge banks juiced profits by cheating ppl on mortgages, credit cards, etc, then crashed our economy,” Warren said.

  1. Been catching-up…some fine comments and post.

Clinton is the best shot in years of getting the dems and pugs to work together.  The extremes on both sides? They do not want that and they can stay where they are and let the middle move forward.  Otherwise, more of the same obstructionism.   We have seen the extreme in the primaries and the rogue, sort of teabagging billionaire won in the pug world due to the inclusion of the solid racist, white base and the number of candidates.  The dems rejected Sanders who was receiving the same Wikileaks info…wrote some of the copy for the trump campaign by introducing the dishonesty tag…all in an attempt to hijack the party and platform.  Sanders failed and spent a lot of money doing so.  Really, except for the core racist support of the former tea party, trump is a flop, too.  Bolstered by foreign governments and crazy domestic advisers.

Clinton needs to clean-up her constricted, lawyer response to the email farce and kiss Comey’s ass.  Admit to being careless and after much thought during her off time during the election?  She realizes she needs to create a cabinet position to explore cyber ethics, security, communication and artificial intelligence…put the focus on the CORRECT way to proceed.

Clinton has so far survived the attacks on both sides…her armor is dented, but she is one tough lady worthy of the title of President.

The Benghazi crap?  Just that…eventually it will be found that Ailes started the peep hole on this one…started the chant on  Faux News in December of 2012…right after the election the pugs lost…and badly.

  2. One thing that always makes me go “Huh?!” is that all these super patriotic Republicans of all stripes all want to do away with “Death Taxes” the scary scary name they have for the inheritance windfall beloved of all the lifestyles of the rich and famous.

First the one thing the Founders of our country agreed upon was the rejection of hereditary wealth and titles.  Even the really, really rich among them such as Hancock & Washington who enjoyed their wealth and privilege didn’t believe the results of their work being passed along without contribution back to the “commonwealth”.

Second, you need to have a net worth of at least $5 million for your inheritors to be taxed.  Even including the family home, very few people reach that level.  Even those purporting to concerns for “The Family Farm” are proven wrong once allowable deductions are applied.

Third those who benefit from “No Death Taxes” are among the most outrageously wealthy even if they haven’t already managed to pass along millions in trust funds of various types long before kicking off.  Even if Donald Trump has managed to squander most of his purported wealth, I’m sure that Donald, Eric, Ivanka, and Barron are delightfully secure “Trust Fund Babies” as are the children of the majority of the super wealthy.

  3. counselor pogo et alia abogados/as,  how fast will this suit be thrown out and to what extent will their lawyer be dressed down by the judge? and, btw, who do you think is paying the legal fees?

    ny times: Election 2016

Parents of 2 Americans Killed in Benghazi Attack Sue Hillary Clinton
In the wrongful-death lawsuit, Patricia Smith and Charles Woods allege that the attack that killed four Americans, including their sons, Sean Smith and Tyrone Woods, “was directly and proximately caused, at a minimum” by Mrs. Clinton’s use of a private email server while in the State Department.

The suit also accuses Mrs. Clinton of having made “false and defamatory statements negligently, recklessly and purposefully and/or intentionally with malice” in her public comments, including those about the connection between the attack and an anti-Muslim YouTube video.

  4. a delicious morsel from a funny slate article: “Donald Trump Swears … a Lot. What’s His Potty Mouth Really Saying?”

As a rule of thumb, when people argue about whether language is appropriate or someone’s grammar is correct, they’re probably not really arguing about language. In the case of swearing, we’re worried about decency or manners and the validity of social relations that manners support or—from another point of view—impose or enforce. Trump’s manners? Let me tell you something about Trump’s manners. They’re terrible. They’re disgusting. They’re a disgrace. He should be in prison for those manners. If I’m ever elected president, I’m going to bomb the shit out of Donald Trump’s manners, you can be sure of that. Make no mistake. In the meantime, Trump’s swearing is a distraction and it’s a proxy for arguments about class, distribution of wealth, race, women’s reproductive rights, political correctness, ethnicity, immigration, you name it—anyway, something we’re unwilling to confront directly because we’re unwilling to love our neighbors as ourselves. I’m pretty sure that’s the big problem this country has.

  5. meanwhile, back on thread topic “stupid’s stupid economic plan”

boston globe: Elizabeth Warren slams Donald Trump’s economic plan

Senator Elizabeth Warren again played the role of Democratic attack dog on Monday, as she slammed Donald J. Trump’s economic plan after the Republican presidential candidate laid out his policies in a Detroit speech.

The Massachusetts senator took to Twitter and fired off 10 rapid-fire criticisms of Trump’s plan, saying his tax policies would benefit only corporations and the wealthy, while his proposed cuts to financial regulations would allow bankers to fleece ordinary Americans.

….as of Tuesday morning, Trump’s Twitter feed showed no response to Warren’s attacks.

  6. Jamie,  something between 1 & 5% of the country’s households have a net worth of $5M.  99.00% is at $7,869,549.00 and 95.00% is at $1,868,640.00.  It’s probably in the 2-3% range.  CBPP says that only 2 of 1000 households is subject to the federal estate tax.  And not all of them would vote for trump to protect their heirs from paying taxes on their inheritance, so the small number of voters who SHOULD be swayed by trump’s pledge to repeal it wouldn’t swing an election for dog catcher, much less president.  From the CBPP “ten facts you should know about the federal estate tax” article:

Today, 99.8 percent of estates owe no estate tax at all, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation.Only the estates of the wealthiest 0.2 percent of Americans — roughly 2 out of every 1,000 people who die — owe any estate tax.  (See Figure 1.)  This is because of the tax’s high exemption amount, which has jumped from $650,000 per person in 2001 to $5.43 million per person in 2015.

Among the few estates nationwide that owed any estate tax in 2013, the effective tax rate — that is, the share of the estate’s value paid in taxes — was 16.6 percent, on average, according to the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center (TPC).[5]  That is far below the top statutory rate of 40 percent.  (See Figure 2.)  Claims by repeal proponents that the estate tax consumes nearly half of an estate’s value are therefore false.

Only roughly 20 small business and small farm estates nationwide owed any estate tax in 2013, according to TPC. TPC’s analysis defined a small-business or small farm estate as one with more than half its value in a farm or business and with the farm or business assets valued at less than $5 million.  Furthermore, TPC estimates those roughly 20 estates owed just 4.9 percent of their value in tax, on average.

Bill of goods here.  Get your bill of goods here!

  7. Did he win?  the guy who sued his mother looked at the article. oy. Very sad for the parents. I wonder who hooked them up

And I gotta say that Susan Collins as always a study in courage

  8. craig, even loons luck out once in awhile [see this 2013 politico article on camera tiff at cnn ]

Klayman was the plaintiff in a lawsuit decided Monday in which a judge ruled the NSA’s surveillance program is likely to be unconstitutional. The decision is arguably the biggest victory of a long career as a gadfly for Klayman, who has been a character in Washington since the 1990s.

  9. Pogo

What gets me is that all of the suckers who believe the “death taxes” spiel are exactly the ones who get hurt most by the richest of the rich getting to keep it all.  As a talking point to fool the gullible, it is right up there with the “Death Panels” which amount to a conversation with your doctor so that he, she, and the relatives know exactly what you want should you not be able to tell them in person.

  10. Craig

Insiders question.  First have you ever met Steve Doocy and second, is he as incredibly ignorant about virtually everything as he seems to be?

  11. pogo, , he founded it and then left and sued it. according to this old story from wapo he even won that one: Last month we reported that legal crusader Larry Klayman’s “record in public interest cases is incalculably terrible,” so we feel bound to pass on that Tuesday Klayman scored a win against the group he founded, Judicial Watch.

he also founded freedom watch.  his next one should be named stop watch.

twice banned for life?  so what’s after that… ripping off his legal epaulets?

  12. here’s wonkette on him back in april:

A bitch judge who is probably totally on the rag won’t let Larry Klayman represent Cliven Bundy and his misshapen sons, because she says Larry Klayman is bad at law and lied to her and misrepresents everything and did she mention he is bad at law? OUR LARRY? HOW CAN THIS BE.

[goes on about his history of Clinton suits]

Oh, also, when he sued Rachel Maddow for quoting Bradlee Dean verbatim, he totally lost and then called the judge “a woman scorned” and called another judge a Jew, and why are all these Jew bitch judges out to get poor Larry Klayman?

Oh we forgot again: Larry Klayman wrote (many times) that Obama wants to LITERALLY ENSLAVE AND KILL ALL WHITE PEOPLE, like, LITERALLY.

….Larry Klayman is always suing people for not saying “he won” when he lost but then appealed (and still lost).

sounds like he’s the perfect lawyer for drumpf’s slapp suits

  13. he’s baaaaack… now suggesting the taking up of arms maybe?  from Houston chronicle:

Donald Trump is suggesting that if Hillary Clinton gets to pick federal judges as president, there is nothing that can be done to protect the right to bear arms.

But then he adds without elaboration that maybe supporters of the Second Amendment could figure out a way.

He says Tuesday at a rally in North Carolina, “By the way if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know.”

  14. Poobah, I think that horse has already left the barn but trump may not accept the debate schedule, so he may do what Clinton should.  I’d be inclined to tell him, no tax returns, no debates.

patd, nah, the epaulets went out with powdered wigs – he’s got to give up the wingtips (or loafers, depending on his sense of style)

  15. did he just call for insurrection?

    as in 18 U.S. Code § 2383 – Rebellion or insurrection

Whoever incites, sets on foot, assists, or engages in any rebellion or insurrection against the authority of the United States or the laws thereof, or gives aid or comfort thereto, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.

  16. cnn:
Trump’s ambiguous comments alarmed some political observers as to whether he was threatening her life or calling for increased political activity.

Robby Mook, Clinton’s campaign manager, issued a one-sentence statement in response to Trump.
“This is simple — what Trump is saying is dangerous. A person seeking to the be president of the United States should not suggest violence in any way,” he said.

  17. Probably not specific enough to rise to the level of insurrection.  He’s not the first politician to talk about invoking second amendment rights, err, remedies.  Speaking of stupid, remember Sharon Angle?

  18. cbc:

Gabrielle Giffords, the former U.S. congresswoman who barely survived a 2011 shooting in her district which killed six others, condemned the comments in the strongest terms.

“Responsible, stable individuals won’t take Trump’s rhetroic to its literal end, but his words may provide a magnet for those seeking infamy. They may provide inspiration or permission for those bent on bloodshed,” said Giffords in a joint statement with her husband, NASA astronaut Mark Kelley.

    and tpm:

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) labeled Donald Trump’s remarks about “Second Amendment people” stopping Hillary Clinton a “death threat” and said Trump was a “pathetic coward who can’t handle the fact that he’s losing to a girl.”

  19. Craig, HRC has to make Trump shut down the debates.  How she does this I don’t yet know.  Perhaps she lets him crap all over himself and then announces she won’t tarnish the reputation of the Presidency by giving him the forum, etc.

She cannot afford to stumble.  She’s like the black guy who gets promoted to manager in 1980.  She has to do things better, faster, harder and error free from here on out.  Not a glitch, not a misspoken word; and Bill HAS to take his medication!  Trump cannot run on the issues – he can only run on what Clinton gives him to criticize her for.

If Trumps’ political Tourette’s syndrome continues, she should jump on each episode like The Incredible Hulk, quickly shoving his fat orange head a few feet under ground.

Second amendment solutions – good lord!  It’s scary, as an American, to realize the 30% of the folks agree whole heartedly.

  20. craig, ah contrary. not only indicate enthusiastic participation and show she’s making elaborate plans prepping for the debates, she should say she welcomes the inclusion of the libertarian nominee (absolutely if he’s anywhere near the magic % required).

it’s a very serious game of chicken…we’re revin’ those engines just daring him to back out

  21. from the statesman:

“I saw it reported, and when I read the quote, I really frankly couldn’t believe he said it,” Kaine told reporters after meeting with Democratic volunteers at a party headquarters in East Austin Tuesday afternoon. “So I went to watch the video of it and found that he had said it exactly the way it was printed.”

“Nobody who is seeking a leadership position, especially the presidency, the leadership of the country, should do anything to countenance violence, and that’s what he was saying. There is a beautiful phrase in the Gospel of Luke that says, ‘From the fullness of the heart, the mouth speaks,’” Kaine said. “What comes out often reveals something really important about who you are, and I think Donald Trump revealed again … a complete temperamental misfit with the character that’s required to do the job.”

“We’ve got to be pulling together and countenancing violence is not something any leader should do,” Kaine said.

    [….]

“I watched the statement,” Kaine said. “Again, you read it with quotes around it in a printed form. What did he mean?”

“Of course they’re trying to row back,” Kaine said. “But I think he was just revealing as he has in many other statements that he’s made — just no understanding of the role of the leader, and I don’t find the attempt to row it back persuasive at all.”

Asked whether the Secret Service should look into Trump’s comment, Kaine said, “I just think it is a window into the soul of a person who is just not temperamentally suited to the task.”

  22. from newser: Trump ignites new firestorm: Gun backers might stop Clinton

Priorities USA, a super PAC supporting Clinton, said Trump had “suggested that someone shoot Hillary Clinton.” Across the country, Democratic House and Senate candidates piled on, working to tie Trump’s comments to their GOP opponents.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, which has endorsed Clinton, said Trump was encouraging gun violence “based on conspiracy theory about Hillary Clinton.”

    [….]

Contrary to Trump’s remarks, Clinton has made her support for gun rights a key piece of her stump speech in a bid to pre-empt attacks from Trump and groups like the NRA. Still, she supports reinstating a federal assault weapons ban, expanding background checks and barring purchases by domestic abusers, among other steps.

“I’m not here to repeal the Second Amendment,” she said in her Democratic National Convention speech. “I’m not here to take away your guns. I just don’t want you to be shot by someone who shouldn’t have a gun in the first place.”
