In Hot Water

Oceans make up 70% of the planet and that 70% is heating up.

USA Today: The oceans are unusually hot and on track to get hotter.

So are we and like the proverbial frogs in a boiling pot neither know about it nor care because of distractions less important but more entertaining or attractive to our self indulgences and pet peeves.

  1. in case you missed it

Earth reaches hottest day ever recorded 3 days in a row (msn.com)

For three days in a row, the planet reached its hottest day ever recorded as regions all over the world endure dangerous heat.
Earth warmed to the highest temperature ever recorded by human-made instruments when the average global temperature reached 17.18 degrees Celsius, or 62.92 degrees Fahrenheit, on Tuesday, as millions of Americans celebrated the Fourth of July, data from the U.S. National Centers for Environmental Prediction shows.
On Wednesday, the record was tied as global temperatures again reached 17.18 degrees Celsius, according to the NCEP.
The record was first set on Monday, when average global temperatures measured at 16.2 degrees Celsius, or 61.16 degrees Fahrenheit, but it only took one day to surpass that temperature.
The heat blanketing much of Earth has been driven by El Niño in combination with the greenhouse gas emissions responsible for global warming, researchers say.
Those conditions may prompt even hotter temperatures over the next six weeks, Robert Rohde, a physicist and lead scientist at Berkeley Earth, a non-profit environmental data analysis group, tweeted on Wednesday.
Although the data only exists after 1979, Tuesday’s temperatures likely represent the record for long before global temperatures began to be recorded, Rhode said.
“Global warming is leading us into an unfamiliar world,” Rhode tweeted.

“leading us into an unfamiliar world”? that’s an understatement for sure.

  2. So I was having lunch with Charles Manson and he says, “Is it hot in here or am I just crazy?”

  3. sturge, glad you’re here. being that you’re good with or at least attuned to creative vocabulary, what should be the jargon for Zuck’s new toy Threads?   Twitter users “tweet” but what will Threaders do … fray?  tangle? bare? hang?

  4. back to the thread (not Threads) topic today:

UN says climate change ‘out of control’ after likely hottest week on record | Climate crisis | The Guardian

The UN secretary general has said that “climate change is out of control”, as an unofficial analysis of data showed that average world temperatures in the seven days to Wednesday were the hottest week on record.
“If we persist in delaying key measures that are needed, I think we are moving into a catastrophic situation, as the last two records in temperature demonstrates,” António Guterres said, referring to the world temperature records broken on Monday and Tuesday.
    [discussion here on stats reliability]
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), whose figures are considered the gold standard in climate data, said on Thursday it could not validate the unofficial numbers.
It noted that the reanalyzer uses model output data, which it called “not suitable” as substitutes for actual temperatures and climate records. The NOAA monitors global temperatures and records on a monthly and an annual basis, not daily.
“We recognise that we are in a warm period due to climate change, and combined with El Niño and hot summer conditions, we’re seeing record warm surface temperatures being recorded at many locations across the globe,” the NOAA said.
Nevertheless, scientists agree they indicate climate change is reaching uncharted territory and that the increased heat from anthropogenic global heating combined with the return of El Niño would lead to more record-breaking temperatures.
The UN confirmed the return of El Niño, a sporadic weather pattern, on Tuesday. The last major El Niño was in 2016, which remains the hottest year on record.
“Chances are that the month of July will be the warmest ever, and with it the hottest month ever … ‘ever’ meaning since the Eemian [interglacial period], which is indeed some 120,000 years ago,” Dr Karsten Haustein, a research fellow in atmospheric radiation at Leipzig University, said.
Various parts of the world have been experiencing heatwaves and on Thursday the EU’s climate monitoring service said the world had experienced its hottest June on record last month.

Chari Vijayaraghavan, a polar explorer and educator who has visited the Arctic and Antarctic regularly for the past 10 years, said global warming is obvious at both poles and threatens the region’s wildlife as well as driving ice melt that raises sea levels.
“Warming climates might lead to increasing risks of diseases such as the avian flu spreading in the Antarctic that will have devastating consequences for penguins and other fauna in the region,” Vijayaraghavan said.

  5. Talked to a friend/lawyer who represents insurance companies who predicts they will lead the way in turning Republicans on climate change, they have come to recognize paying off rising numbers of weather disasters is devastating their business. Oh well, whatever it takes…

  6. Had to do some driving yesterday and heard some climate wag who should have some insight into this stuff say we could very well see a run of daily global high temp records broken each day this month.

  7. Mid-Atlantic – hot humid with popup T-storms.  Uck.

Threads minions are still working out terminology.  Sorta of funny stuff too.  It should be settled already, I am recharging my cell phone and will look at it later to see if there is a result.

The twit head cheese is twitting about how great twit is.  Yeah, that is not what the replies say.  Maybe paying the bills would be good, it would keep the thing running on servers and not be kicked off like what happened on July 1 resulting in the twit limits.

Bluesky is trying to build better.  I like it better than Threads, but Threads has a huge user advantage.  Threads uses everyones Instagram accounts so you start with hundreds if not thousands of names and do not have to add people to function.  Bluesky has most of the basics of twit making it closer to twit than Threads is.

Mastodon is still trying to figure out whether search across all the Mastodon servers should be good or bad.  At least a possum an hour still puts up a possum picture every hour.

  8. Ms. Bronc, you following the Tour?  Could see Cavendish pass Merckx’ stage win record today.

  9. Pogo – I do want to see Cavendish do it.  He has reached his age. I have missed most of it, catching up on cell phone when possible.

Just confirmed the fall of twit.  Normally the notifications tab is always up, can never clear it.  Now it does not have anything going on for more than five minutes, an eternity in the pre-mini sfb world.  It also means the Tour teams are not using it anymore, I don’t know where they are now on media.

  10. Stitch? Spool?

Does MTG being expelled from the freedom caucus mean she’s been set loose among the “normal” republicans?

  11. Liz Cheney on the cocaine:

There’s more cocaine in the bathroom at Mar-a-Lago right next to the nuclear codes and Kim Jong Un’s panties.

Ok, might be parody, but what the hell

  12. I’m pretty sure I’m the expert on threads on this blog.
Did you know that threads are made by twisting at least 2 fibers together…  so my vote would be that people are sending a twist or twisting…

    twisting…  twisting…  twisting the night away…

  13. Renee
another interesting thing about thread is that it looks to the eye as one continuous string. When in fact it is many short fibers holding together. The same goes for ropes where we trust our lives to small fibers holding together.
There is a philosophical though there somewhere.
    Jack

  14. Jack, like the old poster says – When you’re getting to the end of your rope, tie a knot in the end and hold on – (and apparently, hope the rope don’t break).

  15. Cavendish.  That’s my one word impression of Lord Cavendish gets the bad news:
    ”Damn.”
It’s the accent that sells it.

  16. Craig – I wonder how easy it will be for Republicans to get their followers to believe in climate change? Remember, they turned on Republicans who decided not to be anti-vaxxers.

I still think Crazy Kennedy will be the fly in the ointment in 2024. His family needs to start speaking up.

    https://thehill.com/opinion/congress-blog/campaign/4084752-rfk-jr-s-campaign-is-getting-a-boost-from-bidens-hawkishness/

“Kennedy is notably adept at pandering across the political map, with an ideological dexterity that has him appearing with eminent rightwing figures. As Rolling Stone reported in late June, the Heal the Divide super PAC, which uses superlatives to laud Kennedy while supporting his run, “is just one example of the nominally Democratic candidate running a campaign that’s awash in support from backers of Donald Trump.”

“Meanwhile, the reality that RFK Jr. is receiving enthusiastic support from some leading MAGA Republicans should not surprise us. Steve Bannon has called Kennedy “an excellent choice” to join a ticket headed by Donald Trump. While that’s unlikely, top Republican strategists are gleeful at Kennedy’s momentum, which they see as boosting the chances that the GOP can win the White House next year.”

“But numerous antiwar activists are now flirting with — or even embracing — the Kennedy 2024 campaign.”

I disagree with the notion that Biden is overly-hawkish. He’s shown great restraint, maneuvering with our allies to deal with Putin’s war on Ukraine, and although poorly executed, removed our troops from Afghanistan.

Someone, his family or the Lincoln Project, someone needs to call out Crazy Kennedy for what he is, and they need to do it now.

  17. They write those articles just to make sure there’s enough Rubbish to read.

Kennedy is a schmuck, everybody knows it and he’ll get bupkis

    Ralph Nader he ain’t.

He’s the GOP’s idea of a “slick move”.

  18. The NYTimes likes Bobbyjr alot.  He is a disgusting asshole who would say anything to get his name out and about.

Given all the goopers who love him–maybe he should enter the Gooper primaries.

  19. BiD
I’ve read somewhere (probably in the Boston Globe) that Kennedy’s family is calling him out.  But he’s a grown ass man…  there isn’t much they can actually do about him.  Like it or not… he has a right to run for any office he wants.

I do agree with Sturg…  he’s a bupkis and everybody knows it.

  20. https://www.cnn.com/2023/07/07/opinions/biden-robert-f-kennedy-problem-zelizer/index.html

“There are many reasons Kennedy might cause trouble for Biden. His left-leaning positions on the environment and corporations, coupled with conspiracy theories, many of which are popular on the right, could cause some voters to peel away from Biden. And, of course, there is the Kennedy name — one of the most recognizable and beloved in Democratic politics.”

“The biggest problem, however, has to do with the primary calendar. At the end of last year, Biden switched the Democratic primary schedule to put South Carolina first. But New Hampshire is refusing to cede its historic spot, pointing to a state law that stipulates the Granite State must hold its primary one week before all the others.”

“As a result, Biden might not even appear on the New Hampshire ballot, effectively ceding the state to Kennedy and author and speaker Marianne Williamson.”

“Unlike Republican attacks, Kennedy’s criticism will come from within the Democratic fold and could gain more legitimacy within the party (although he has also gotten support from the right, from people who may be looking for a way to disrupt Biden).”

“We have seen the damage that this can cause. Like the tremors that McCarthy caused when he nearly upset Johnson, Sen. Estes Kefauver of Tennessee had a similar impact on a struggling President Harry Truman in 1952. After Kefauver was victorious in New Hampshire, Truman soon announced that he would not run for reelection.”

“The administration will have to make some strategic decisions about how to handle the New Hampshire primary and how best to strike back against Kennedy as the 2024 campaign shapes up.”

If the family can’t regain him in, then the Lincoln Project needs to do it. Crazy Kennedy helps tRUMPsky. Heck, he aligns more with the fascists than the Dems. Here’s a scary and , hopefully, wacky thought: tRUMPsy/Kennedy? I wouldn’t put it past him to try to use name recognition for more votes. Bobby Jr. is already buddies with the MAGAt PACs.

  21. I once heard him ranting through the Denver airport. I didn’t even have to turn my head to recognize that voice.

  22. https://www.cnn.com/2023/07/07/business/farmer-contract-thumbs-up-emoji/index.html

“After phone calls with farmers Bob and Chris Achter, SWT drafted a contract for Chris Achter to sell SWT 86 metric tons of flax for $17 a bushel and deliver the flax in November.”

“The SWT rep signed the contract in ink and then sent a photo of the contract via cell phone to Chris Achter along with the message “Please confirm flax contract.”

“Achter responded with a “thumbs-up” emoji, according to the documents.”

“Achter never delivered the flax in November 2021, according to the documents. By November, the price of flax was $41 per bushel.”

“According to Achter in the court documents, he confirmed “the thumbs-up emoji simply confirmed that I received the Flax contract. It was not a confirmation that I agreed with the terms of the Flax Contract. The full terms and conditions of the Flax Contract were not sent to me, and I understood that the complete contract would follow by fax or email for me to review and sign. Mr. Mikleborough [sic] regularly texted me, and many of the messages were informal.”

“Achter’s counsel said in the documents, “allowing a simple 👍 emoji to signify identity and acceptance would open up the flood gates to allow all sorts of cases coming forward asking for interpretations as to what various different emojis mean – for example what does a 👊 emoji mean or a 🤝 emoji mean, etc. Counsel argues the courts will be inundated with all kinds of cases if this court finds that the 👍 emoji can take the place of a signature.”

“The judge ruled Achter owed SWT $82,000 plus interests and costs for failing to deliver the flax.”

  23. https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4083305-rfk-jr-campaign-fundraising-3m-three-days/

“RFK Jr.’s campaign hauls in $3 million in three days”

“The Republicans who are afraid of POTUS Joe are probably the ones bankrolling his campaign.”

“We are hearing again and again that Mr. Kennedy is catching on because the public is fed up with the media smears. People are answering the attacks by opening up their wallets. RFK, Jr. has shown respect for the intelligence of the American people. The more people hear his message, the more he connects,” campaign manager Dennis Kucinich said in a statement on the campaign’s fundraising.”

So, that’s what Dennis Kucinich is up to these days.

I don’t disagree that Kennedy is a bloviating crackpot, I’m just saying he’s gonna make a mess of things and that’s dangerous.

  24. BID, you are right without a doubt. Hope the family can reel him in. It would take an intervention.

  25. Ya know, it might not be a bad thing to have a Dem or two that can speak fluent crackpot.

It’s a damn few that can pass the liberal purity test

  26. Both of my smokers are pellet fueled and have temp controls like an oven, and they work well.  It’s the nuts.
