  1. President Biden went off script in a speech in Ireland, Fox News is rumored to be seeking a settlement to avoid more embarrassment in the Dominion lawsuit, and details continue to surface about the suspicious relationship between Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and billionaire Harlan Crow.

Fox Dominion: history making defamation trial over 2020 election lies kicks off in Delaware – CNN

The high-stakes showdown between Dominion Voting Systems and Fox News finally commences in earnest Tuesday when the $1.6 billion defamation trial begins, shining a spotlight on Fox’s election denialism and the toxic role of its disinformation on American politics.
The trial, initially set to begin with opening statements on Monday, was abruptly delayed on Sunday evening, in an eleventh-hour twist that raised speculation of settlement talks, but ultimately failed to prevent the trial’s open.

Historic fight over the First Amendment
Dominion will try to convince the jury that people at Fox News who were responsible for the 20 lie-filled broadcasts mentioned in the lawsuit knew at the time that they were peddling lies but did so anyway. That would be “actual malice,” a both high and necessary legal benchmark to win a defamation case in the US legal system.

  3. I was not happy that the Congress did not revoke the billionaires tax relief.  Since that passed and we commoners could no longer take deductions, my tax rate went up.  Very unhappy.

The judge needs to keep the faux snooze “legal” team strapped down and gagged.  It would not surprise me to see sfb get his fat a into it too, somehow-someway.  It should be a great circus.

  4. We are unfortunate enough to live in a time where the taxes are so disproportionate.  Us boneheads running around scraping up scud-encrusted dollar bills while assholes like that guy who owns clearance thomas have so much wealth that if it were cash it would fill up an auditorium.

  5. Stupid us – we thought yesterday was the deadline (like it usually is  – on Monday – following my sister’s birthday falling on a weekend), so we polished the turds and popped ours into the P.O. Saturday.

I really do not understand why Congress didn’t repeal the Dumbass tax cuts when they had the option in the 1st 2 years of Biden’s term.

  6. As per usual, we did ours in February.  Son unhappy as return was over a thousand less than usual, but it was arrived and spent on the ever increasing utility bills and groceries.

  7. If only we got something for our taxes beyond roads to drive to work for wages on which to pay taxes.   The congressional salaries we pay are a pittance compared to the real ways they make money. It seems we always keep our standing military units busy, and they may get busier from the looks of it.

Although taxes there are high, I often wish I lived in Denmark.   Healthcare, k-secondary education, parental leave, support between jobs and additional education. That rotten smell is coming from the US.

  8. I’d like it if we just got the roads repaired – There are a series of half a dozen or so potholes in front of our house – the biggest one could be a Koi pond.

  9. We did our taxes in February.  Because of my business, we have them done by an accountant.
It’s wet and dreary here today…. Good day for shopping at LaHouts!

  10. Oh……..I had heard that West Virginia was almost heaven.   I figured like it must be streets of gold and stuff.

  11. I quit working last year and as I’m over 65 I don’t have to file unless I make over $14,700
Since I made just under that, I don’t have to file.
    Life is good in retirement.

  12. Hubs does the paperwork and I cover my eyes when I sign.

    Knowledge of Errors
You can’t claim innocent spouse relief for understated taxes if:

You had actual knowledge of the errors on your return
A reasonable person in similar circumstances would have known about the errors

    You had actual knowledge if:

You knew that your spouse received unreported income
You knew of facts that made a deduction or credit unallowable
You knew that your spouse deducted false or inflated expenses

  13. Hah!  Streets of gold.  That’ll be the day. That “almost heaven” came from an Arizona/Texas/ Colorado/California resident named Deutschendorf who thinks that the Shenandoah river is a remarkable part of the state.  I guess so – the last 20 miles of it are in WV from the VA/WV line to where it flows into the Potomac at Harper’s Ferry, and the other 37 miles plus its two major tributaries (North Branch and South branch – each 100 miles or so long) are in Virginia.

  14. Went to the AARP tax aide this year, because the marketplace insurance thing is just weird on the tax end if it, too.  This is the first year I haven’t done it all myself.

  15. pogo, john d had to go with Shenandoah.  Monongahela, Little Kanawha or Potts Creek Cowpasture River just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

  16. RED ALERT! RED ALERT! security breach at white house!

    the hill:

A toddler on Tuesday squeezed through the fencing in front of the White House and was able to get onto the property before Secret Service scooped him up.
The unidentified child got through the metal fence on the north side of the complex, making his way toward the North Lawn while his parents were on Pennsylvania Avenue.
“The Secret Service Uniformed Division today encountered a curious young visitor along the White House north fence line who briefly entered White House grounds. The White House security systems instantly triggered Secret Service officers and the toddler and parents were quickly reunited,” Secret Service chief of communications Anthony Guglielmi told The Hill.
Onlookers inside the White House property noticed fuss, and some spotted the child being removed by Secret Service.
Access to the White House complex was restricted during the commotion. President Biden was on the property at the time of the pint-sized perimeter breach.
The parents of the child were questioned and sent on their way with the trespassing tot in tow.
The White House fencing is roughly 13 feet tall after recently being nearly doubled in height. The toddler is likely the first person to successfully intrude onto White House property since then.

  17. speaking of the pres.  mediaite story about the KC lad who was shot for just ringing a door bell

On Monday night, a White House official told reporters “This evening, the President spoke by phone to Ralph Yarl and shared his hope for a swift recovery.”

Later in the evening, White House Deputy Director of Oval Office Operations Ashley Williams added that Biden spoke to Yarl’s mother s well.

“This evening, the President spoke to Ralph Yarl and his mom. @POTUS expressed he was thinking of him and shared his hope for a swift recovery,” Williams wrote on Twitter.

When reached for comment by Mediaite Tuesday morning, a White House official described the call in more detail:

They spoke at length regarding Ralph’s recovery and Ralph reminded the President that his mom Cleo Nagbe, who also joined the call, was not only a nurse but also a physical therapist. They discussed how fortunate Ralph was for that. They also discussed Ralph’s success in the classroom and his desire to pursue a chemical engineering degree at Texas A&M — and the President lightheartedly attempted to convince him that University of Delaware was a much better option. They discussed their respective families’ history and love of music. The President also committed to keeping up his fight against gun violence.

reported later that uncle joe also invited him to the white house

  18. Looks like Faux Spews and/or the Murdochs chickened out. Afraid all their lies would be exposed. Now it would be nice to know how much it cost them.

BB – Throw out all my popcorn while you’re at it.

  19. We bought some popcorn…. Gonna eat some while watching the Celtics playoff game tonight!  Ya know…. Waste not… want not type stuff…

  20. Great disappointment in twit world from all who have enormous quantities of popcorn and potato chips in storage for a entertaining trial.  The big question that is so far unanswered is besides money will the faux gang have to strip naked and whip themselves with paper ballots while proclaiming how dirty they are?

  21. From Raw Story (paywall, but good news consolidator worth a look):
Fox News will not have to issue an on-air apology for spreading falsehoods over election fraud in 2020 under terms of its settlement with Dominion Voting Systems, CNN’s Oliver Darcy reports.
This absolutely is at the bottom of happiness.  FU Dominion. Let them lie some more, eh?

  22. One likely reason Fox News settled so big: the judge just appointed a special master to investigate who at Fox tried to criminally obstruct the trial. That special master will continue, even with the settlement. If you wanted there to be a criminal component to this, there it is.

There could still be criminal charges against individuals for obstruction, but that could be a long time coming.

  23. WaPo:

Fox News agreed to settle a defamation lawsuit brought by Dominion Voting Systems on Tuesday for $787.5 million, according to an attorney for the voting technology company, representing a stunning conclusion to one of the most highly-anticipated media trials in decades. The announcement came just hours after jurors were selected. Dominion sued Fox for $1.6 billion, claiming the network defamed the voting company by either knowingly or recklessly airing false claims tying Dominion to a conspiracy to undermine the 2020 presidential election.

Settling for half of the ad damnum is a great deal for Dominion.  Settling without a verdict other than $$$ is a great deal for NYT, WaPo, Faux, etc. a la NYT v. Sullivan, especially for Faux.

  24. By the way just like American democracy I too am available for purchase at a price of $787,500,000

  25. For those still PO’d about having the spare bedroom full of popcorn and/or potato chips, there is still another case against faux snooz.  Yes, the one not talked about, Smartmatic.  The aholes at faux went hard and fast against them too.
The company was often lumped in with Dominion while the false claims were made on Fox, and in some cases the claims against Smartmatic arguably went further.

Yup, we do have more coming up.  Including the master going through the crap of faux.  That office could come up with a few winners.  So, sigh, we still have more coming even after we did not have a knock out blow.  KO don’t give up.

  26. Smartmatic $2billion+ suit against FOX still to go. Even stronger case. They were a accused of rigging the election even though their election software was only used in one county in the whole nation.

Statement from Smartmatic lawyer Erik Connolly:  “Dominion’s litigation exposed some of the misconduct and damage caused by Fox’s disinformation campaign. Smartmatic will expose the rest. Smartmatic remains committed to clearing its name, recouping the significant damage done to the company, and holding Fox accountable for undermining democracy.”

Special master looking into Tucker and his brother?
