Is this America’s Reichstag-fire moment? | The Seattle Times
By David Horsey
On the night of Feb. 27, 1933, someone set fire to the Reichstag, the home of the German parliament in Berlin. In the hours after the conflagration gutted the building, Germany’s newly chosen chancellor, Adolf Hitler, persuaded the country’s president, Paul von Hindenburg, to declare an emergency and suspend civil liberties.
Those liberties were not restored until Hitler’s authoritarian regime lay in ruins 12 years later at the end of the most destructive war in history.
At the start of 1933, Hitler’s ultranationalist, populist political party did not yet control parliament. The Reichstag fire provided the excuse for the Nazi leader to claim falsely that the arson was a first step toward an imminent communist revolution. Hitler had thousands of communists thrown into prison and then, with voters stirred up by the fabricated scenario, he called an election in which the Nazis and their allies won a majority.
Needing a two-thirds vote in parliament to have his temporary emergency powers made permanent, Hitler’s goons prevented many uncooperative members of the opposition Social Democratic Party from taking part in the ballot. With that, Hitler got his two-thirds and his full dictatorship.
A trial conducted by the German Supreme Court convicted a rather hapless communist sympathizer for setting the Reichstag fire, but the court also determined that he was not part of a vast leftist conspiracy, nor was he the spearhead of an imminent overthrow of the government. Hitler was not pleased with that outcome and created a system of “people’s courts” to ensure that he would get verdicts more to his liking in the future.
Invoking the history of the Third Reich to comment on current affairs can seem alarmist because it is such an extreme example of politics gone terribly awry. Still, the pattern set in 1933 does raise fears that the same tactics could be used today.
The horrific assassination of right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk seems to be offering the Trump administration its own Reichstag fire. Kirk’s alleged killer is a young man from a religious, Republican, gun-owning family who, according to the limited information available so far, got sucked into an incendiary internet cesspool of violent memes and rhetoric that appears more nihilist than coherently left wing. Nevertheless, the president, the vice president and others in the administration are contending that Kirk’s assassin is the tool of a dangerous, well-funded cabal of radical leftist organizations that promote violence against conservatives and that, therefore, aggressive efforts must be made to stamp them out.
“It is a vast domestic terrorist movement,” Stephen Miller, Trump’s deputy chief of staff, said on Monday. “With God as my witness, we are going to use every resource we have at the Department of Justice, Homeland Security and throughout this government to identify, disrupt, dismantle and destroy these networks and make America safe again for the American people.”
Among the imagined terrorist schemers named by White House officials is the venerable Ford Foundation, as well as the right’s favorite conspiracy-theory bogeyman, George Soros. This allegation is as looney as President Donald Trump’s new $15 billion lawsuit against The New York Times that alleges the newspaper’s factual presidential campaign coverage in 2024 was all lies and defamation.
This heightened push to crush the opposition is just an extension of the administration’s other assaults in the culture war, including the effort to eliminate insufficiently upbeat history exhibits from the Smithsonian museums and the national parks, to prosecute political opponents, to defund universities, to purge the government of anyone who is not a Trump loyalist and to redraw congressional district maps so that Republicans can maintain control of Congress.
It is hard not to conclude we are being governed by a regime that is eager to employ ever-more powerful tools to control information, silence critics, punish opponents and retain power indefinitely.
So, it does not feel alarmist to ask, is this America’s Reichstag moment?

John Oliver discusses ABC’s move to pull Jimmy Kimmel off the air, what it has to do with Brendan Carr and the FCC, what it means for free speech in the United States, and which broadcasting giant should open an Italian restaurant. Ok fine: it’s Tegna. With a name like “Tegna” you’ve just gotta serve complimentary garlic knots. End of discussion.
Horsey’s article lands well with David Frum’s take in The Atlantic: Trump Might Be Losing His Race Against Time
The president is gambling that he can consolidate authority before the public turns too sharply against him.
The metaphor Frum uses: Trump is ascending a staircase that’s moving downward under his feet—if he doesn’t build leverage fast, he risks falling. Meanwhile, the public is souring: inflation, stalled job growth, unpopular vaccine policies, disapproval of his economic moves, and loss of faith in the administration’s ethics are all piling up.
— Gift Link
repeating for emphasis oliver’s quote from a *unanimous SCOTUS on may 30, 2024:
“[g]overnment officials cannot attempt to coerce private parties in order to punish or suppress views that the government disfavors”.
If frustration keeps rising — over prices, corruption, daily life — and judges, prosecutors, and local officials stop carrying Trump’s water, 2026 could flip on him fast. Heavy-handed crackdowns could blow up in his face, turning off swing voters and driving turnout. I saw it in the D.C. protests: it wasn’t radicals in the streets, it was regular people deciding enough was enough.

Dr. John Gartner, former Johns Hopkins professor and co-host of the podcast ‘Shrinking Trump,’ joins the Beast’s Joanna Coles to deliver a chilling diagnosis: Donald Trump is showing signs of dementia layered on top of malignant narcissism. Drawing on decades of clinical expertise, Dr. Gartner explains how Trump’s declining language, erratic gait, and disturbing anecdotes point to brain deterioration that makes him not just unpredictable but uniquely dangerous in office. Coles presses him on how Trump’s narcissism compares to King Charles’ public persona, whether his cabinet and family are retreating from his volatility, and what it means when a leader with nuclear codes also displays symptoms of mini-strokes and confabulation. From Hitler’s psychology to Bill Clinton’s benign narcissism, this episode explores how power amplifies paranoia, cruelty, and decay—and asks the starkest question of all: as Trump weakens physically and mentally while tightening his grip on authority, how far can Trumpism go before it breaks America?
Loved John Oliver last night. He was hilarious while scaring the hell out of anyone paying attention.

Thanks to a couple hours in the car, a visit to the grocery store and a couple more on the tractor mulching leaves (yes, it’s that time again, isn’t it?) Trump officials shut down bribery probe of border czar Tom Homan.
Homan was caught on tape accepting a bag filled with $50,000 in cash from an undercover FBI agent in September 2024, according to people familiar with the matter and a government document.
The Trump administration’s border czar, Tom Homan, was caught on tape accepting a bag filled with $50,000 in cash from undercover FBI agents in Texas in September 2024, when he was a private citizen, according to two people familiar with the matter and a government document confirming the existence of the probe.
At the time, Homan was being floated for a top immigration job in the incoming administration and allegedly took the money from agents posing as businessmen in exchange for potentially helping the men land contracts related to immigration enforcement if Donald Trump won the election, the people said.
The Justice Department, in the final months of the Biden administration, launched a bribery investigation into Homan, but the Trump administration shut it down this year, citing a lack of “credible evidence” and calling it a “political investigation.”
“This blatantly political investigation, which found no evidence of illegal activity, is yet another example of how the Biden Department of Justice was using its resources to target President Trump’s allies rather than investigate real criminals and the millions of illegal aliens who flooded our country,” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said in a statement. “Tom Homan has not been involved with any contract award decisions. He is a career law enforcement officer and lifelong public servant who is doing a phenomenal job on behalf of President Trump and the country.”
The investigation, which was first reported by MSNBC, stemmed from an unrelated counterintelligence probe — which Homan was not the target of — during which undercover FBI agents met the chief executive of a government contracting business focused on immigration operations and detention management. That executive proposed in front of the undercover agents to pay $1 million to Homan in exchange for a contract, and a plan was hatched in which the undercover agents would meet Homan and pay him the cash, according to the people familiar with the situation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly.
The case was launched in the Western District of Texas, but the Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section — which has historically overseen cases involving public officials and potential voting crimes — became involved in November, one of the people said.
“This matter originated under the previous administration and was subjected to a full review by FBI agents and Justice Department prosecutors,” Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel said in a statement. “They found no credible evidence of any criminal wrongdoing.”
Because Homan was not yet a government official at the time he accepted the money and Trump had not yet been elected, it could have been tricky to bring bribery charges, though at least some people in the government felt that there was adequate evidence showing Homan would be getting a powerful job in the incoming administration to bring such charges, according to the people familiar with the matter.
Before Trump took office, for example, Homan touted on social media and in public appearances that he would be returning to the administration and “running the biggest deportation operation this country’s ever seen.”
In 2016, the Supreme Court overturned the public corruption conviction of former Virginia governor Robert F. McDonnell, in a decision that imposed a higher standard for federal prosecutors who charge public officials with wrongdoing — and legal experts said that precedent would have made it harder to prosecute the Homan case.
Jonathan Kravis, a former prosecutor in the Public Integrity Section who now works in private practice, said bringing the case would depend on exactly what Homan promised and from what position he said he would deliver those favors.
Regardless, Kravis said, the recording of Homan accepting $50,000 in cash should trigger a robust investigation to determine whether the Trump official attempted to deliver on his promises once he assumed power.
“The problem is that in the summer 2024, Homan doesn’t know exactly what his position will be in the Trump administration,” Kravis said. “But it will certainly merit some follow-up.”
Created in the wake of the Watergate scandal, the Public Integrity Section has dramatically shrunk during the Trump administration, dropping from about 30 prosecutors at the end of the Biden administration to fewer than five today.

Comments by FBI Director Kash Patel and other public officials following the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah are raising questions about whether Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of the shooting, can receive a fair trial.
By publicly disclosing details of evidence before trial, Patel and Utah officials may have complicated efforts to find an impartial jury, raising constitutional questions about due process and fair trial rights.
*Like we even have due process anymore, but OK.
Pogo – Here, I’m being told the suspect was radicalized at college. Um, he only went for one semester and that was awhile ago. That doesn’t mean it couldn’t have happened, but growing up in a MAGAt household was a pretty powerful starter kit. And, yes, the DOJ is corrupted like SCOTUS and congressional Republicans and the NIH and the DOD.
The big, beautiful obit will be all of them sitting in time-out in The Hague, with BiBi and Putin and Faux News and the billionaires high-jacking humanity.
60 Minutes feature from last night about a new Texas university:
With obits in mind, a friend sent me an obit from a farmer who passed this month. In it, he (or whomever wrote it) maybe dragged Nixon a tiny bit and left a brief history of his life in the US.
That’s kind of a brilliant way to never let the bastards off of the hook, while leaving morsels for future generations who may be living in a whitewashed world. I wonder if anyone has done that across the history of written obits? I think it should be a thing.
Here is an excerpt:
“…bought their first piece of farmland in 1972, just before President Nixon devalued the dollar twice to get reelected. President Nixon was impeached, land prices soared.”
“…missed out on the SDS marching on the Military and Naval Science Building after the massacre of the students at Kent State in 1970.”
“…he graduated from Law School with a Juris Doctor degree. He passed the bar in April of 1978, and was admitted to practice…did not hang out his shingle…went back the farm, where he works “just for the family” …
“ He enjoyed flying to Washington D.C. and lobbying on various farm issues of the day. He was in Washington on September 11, 2001, when the Pentagon was hit by the hijackers of American Airlines Flight 77.”
[After one semester at Utah State and taking a leave of absence form his pre-engineering program there] Robinson then enrolled at Dixie Technical College in St. George, a spokesperson for the college said in a statement. He is currently a third-year student in the electrical apprenticeship program, and according to state records, obtained an apprentice electrician license in 2022.
I’m just guessing that Dixie Technical College isn’t exactly a liberal hotbed. I’m guessing that more likely he “got liberalized” when he started dating a guy transitioning to a woman, and took offense to CK’s hateful rhetoric about gays and trans people.
Charlie Kirk killer’s transgender lover shared messages supporting Jordan Peterson
Reddit posts previously revealed by the Daily Mail appear to support that. But further messages show Robinson’s romantic partner Lance Twiggs was a fan of Peterson, even though he has famously railed against radical leftist movements, especially around gender identity, pronouns and the trans movement.
Posts made around 2020 and 2021 express Twiggs’s admiration for Peterson, saying his teachings were tied to ‘personal growth and becoming a better person.’
In forums discussing Peterson, Twiggs admitted to having once been ‘openly transphobic’ — despite being transgender himself.
*There’s a weak spinoff of The Office on Peacock, called The Paper. The one thing it does well is to show how sunk we are without real journalists, and how all of the various outlets are just redundant as they use the wire services to create their sites in order to monetize clicks and scrape data. Now, why did The Daily Mail make me think of that? Hmmm.
I wasn’t familiar with Peterson, but sounds like Twiggs is engaging in a bit of self hate, or more likely confusion about Peterson.
BiD: Ivy – Do they feel the pinch of the economic policies yet?
Doesn’t look like it that I can tell. Even if they were, they’d blame it on somebody else.
I don’t know who Twiggy or Petersen are. Should I try to keep it that way❓

Given his/her age and living in Utah, I suspect they were trying understand a world where they didn’t fit in. Probably very much wishing to fit in. Now if one keeps doing it into their 40’s the self hate label would apply.
I remember at that age going on my great religious hunt Where I tried several religions just wanting to believe, as those around me believed. It never happened and I adjusted to the fact that I am just not capable of religious belief. But growing up in a community that encouraged strong belief I viewed it a personal flaw that could be corrected, fortunately I discovered good dope and grew out of that phase, but it took a while.

Jamie – She went through so much in her short lifetime. Very sad.
Polio is weird. Not everyone seems to be affected, but that’s how it spreads. My great-aunt was 19 (mid-1930s), but nobody else in the family (she was unmarried and lived on a farm with her parents and several siblings) caught it. She was paralyzed for awhile, but always had terrible nerve pain in her legs.
RFKJ is an idiot & a monster. How disease-ridden and depopulated the US will be if this continues. US will be a no-fly-to zone.
Appearing on Fox News’ Fox and Friends, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, compared Charlie Kirk, the conservative political activist killed during an event in Utah, to a “modern Saint Paul,” calling him a “missionary, evangelist, and hero.”
In an editorial in the National Catholic Reporter, journalist John Grosso called the comparison “false by any measure” and accused conservative prelates of “mythologizing” the controversial activist.
Grosso also recalls that Kirk was racist, sexist, and xenophobic, “far from an admirer of Catholicism,” and a fierce critic of Pope Francis. The head of Turning Point USA had called the pontiff “Marxist,” “heretical,” and “corrupt” and had publicly rejected papal primacy until January 2025. “I want a better Catholic Church,” the journalist quoted Kirk as saying. “I personally would not be able to be part of an institution with the figurehead with a worldview that is so corrupted and opposite of what I think the Bible teaches.”
Robert Barron, bishop of Winona-Rochester, Minnesota, also called Kirk “an apostle of civil discourse.”
The National Catholic Reporter denounces how this ‘sanctification’ of the activist by the Catholic right is “poisoning the discourse” with a false dichotomy: “You must endorse Kirk’s cause for sainthood or you are fired from your job, silenced, and kicked out of civil society.
Why must it be all or nothing? Why can’t we say that Kirk was a complicated man who held reprehensible views while condemning his brutal public execution?”
*Sure as heck can’t say that in this house.

The folks at AllRecipes are warning us to go stock up on spices before the next wave of tariffs hit.
On Aug. 27, the U.S. doubled tariffs on exports from India from 25 to 50 percent on select goods. A wave of panic rolled through the spice world because, as The Atlantic and New York Times reported, India is a major exporter of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and many other spices. This is on the heels of existing tariffs imposed on other countries, where the U.S. also gets a lot of its spices.
As Food & Wine reported after chatting with spice experts, the U.S. imports “black pepper from India, Vietnam, and Brazil; vanilla from Madagascar; cinnamon from Sri Lanka and Indonesia; nutmeg and cloves from Indonesia and Grenada; and cardamom from Guatemala.”
Food & Wine also reported that McCormick, one of our favorite spice brands come fall, estimated that “potential tariff changes could cost the company up to $90 million per year.” The story goes on to share that McCormick is looking to “offset much of these increased costs.”
And it’s just getting rolling.

Speaking at the White House, Trump advised women to avoid acetaminophen “during the entire pregnancy.”
Trump said during his remarks, “If you can’t tough it out, if you can’t do it, that’s what you’re gonna have to do. You’ll take a Tylenol, but it’ll be very sparingly. It can be something that’s very dangerous to the woman’s health.”
“I think you shouldn’t take it,” Trump continued.

Obama years ~25,000 70–80% 7,000–8,000
2025 (current) ~30,000 30–35% 2~3,000 (many cases dropped or released)

“Beginning Tuesday night, Sinclair will be preempting ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ across our ABC affiliate stations and replacing it with news programming. Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show’s potential return,” the company said in a statement posted to X Monday.
I missed Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski at UN today. He was on fire:
“I have only one request to the Russian government: If another missile or aircraft enters our space without permission, deliberately or by mistake, and gets shot down and the wreckage falls on NATO territory, please don’t come here to whine about it,” Sikorski said. “You have been warned.”
Just watched Orange Adolf attempt to read the word ‘acetaminophen’ at today’s Tylenol presser. LoL!

I had trouble a few years ago with chronic inner ear infections. My new doctor at the time recommended that I take the over the counter allergy med Xyzal and musinex to open up the drainage tube to the inner ear. It worked
I keep a bottle of both now.
A different problem I know, but the same area.

Increased informality may have been the primary reason for the decline in the wearing of spats. In 1913, friends scrambled to help Griffith Taylor find spats and a top hat to receive the Polar Medal from King George V.[3] In 1923, King George V opened the Chelsea Flower Show, an important event in the London Season, wearing a frock coat, gray top hat and spats. By 1926, the King shocked the public by wearing a black morning coat instead of a frock coat (a small but significant change). This arguably helped speed the frock coat’s demise (although it was still being worn on the eve of the Second World War). Spats were another clothing accessory left off by the King in 1926. It is said that the moment this was observed and commented on by the spectators it produced an immediate reaction; the ground beneath the bushes was littered with discarded spats.[4]
Riding through western MO a couple of weeks ago, there were lots of yellow fields that didn’t look like sunflowers, but not like the goldenrod up here.
What is up with the road system there? Non-consecutive letters of the alphabet. Confusing and I wasn’t the driver.
Those would be local state maintained paved roads, They usually are cross connecters for major highways or connect farm areas to the local town. They rarely connect more than 2 counties. If there is a system to naming them, I never noticed it. Most of them look like there was very little thought in building them. I suspect most were gravel roads that got paved. before that foot paths.

There are number of yellow wild flowers this time of year, I have some growing in my front yard from wild flower seed I harvested while walking. Don’t know the name of them as I never looked them up.

Is this America’s Reichstag-fire moment? | The Seattle Times
By David Horsey
Sep 22, 2025 #lastweektonight
John Oliver discusses ABC’s move to pull Jimmy Kimmel off the air, what it has to do with Brendan Carr and the FCC, what it means for free speech in the United States, and which broadcasting giant should open an Italian restaurant. Ok fine: it’s Tegna. With a name like “Tegna” you’ve just gotta serve complimentary garlic knots. End of discussion.
Horsey’s article lands well with David Frum’s take in The Atlantic:
Trump Might Be Losing His Race Against Time
The president is gambling that he can consolidate authority before the public turns too sharply against him.
*for info on decision see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Rifle_Association_of_America_v._Vullo%5D
If frustration keeps rising — over prices, corruption, daily life — and judges, prosecutors, and local officials stop carrying Trump’s water, 2026 could flip on him fast. Heavy-handed crackdowns could blow up in his face, turning off swing voters and driving turnout. I saw it in the D.C. protests: it wasn’t radicals in the streets, it was regular people deciding enough was enough.
not a matter of if but when on the enraged ranting response and threat to them from Dodo
Premiered Sep 20, 2025 The Daily Beast Podcast

Thanks to a couple hours in the car, a visit to the grocery store and a couple more on the tractor mulching leaves (yes, it’s that time again, isn’t it?) I missed every minute of the CK memorial yesterday. Not even my morbid curiosity could drag me into the house to listen to the ramblings of DoDo and DoDumb lionizing a RW political operative who had the misfortune of being shot by a pissed off college student. Nope, that’s not more important than staying ahead of the Maples and Beech trees. What little I caught of it on MoJo this morning confirmed the correctness of my choice.

* Enjoy, I guess.
BiD, from CNN
I’m just guessing that Dixie Technical College isn’t exactly a liberal hotbed. I’m guessing that more likely he “got liberalized” when he started dating a guy transitioning to a woman, and took offense to CK’s hateful rhetoric about gays and trans people.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-15101311/trans-lover-charlie-kirk-killer-jordan-peterson.html
Doesn’t look like it that I can tell. Even if they were, they’d blame it on somebody else.
I don’t know who Twiggy or Petersen are. Should I try to keep it that way❓
Pogo
Given his/her age and living in Utah, I suspect they were trying understand a world where they didn’t fit in. Probably very much wishing to fit in. Now if one keeps doing it into their 40’s the self hate label would apply.
I remember at that age going on my great religious hunt Where I tried several religions just wanting to believe, as those around me believed. It never happened and I adjusted to the fact that I am just not capable of religious belief. But growing up in a community that encouraged strong belief I viewed it a personal flaw that could be corrected, fortunately I discovered good dope and grew out of that phase, but it took a while.

I’m cranking up our Mystery Theater to make fun of Dumpster at the UN 9am ET tomorrow
A very long time ago I used to work at the oil and gas fields of Wyoming. Many of the jobs do not require much more than the ability to follow instructions on using a shovel. A lot more than some of the workers were of one religion. They were nice, a little strange at times.
During the mid-90’s one of the leaders of our organization was very helpful, knowledgable and great organizer. The town in Utah where she lived had about three or four hundred people. Most had the same last name.
Both examples are of people who tend to have a family tree with few outside branches.
ooh yay my afternoon joke is “see you later, don’t take any Tylenol!”

Yeah, that was a treat to behold. At least at the time my name was masculine and giving me a fox wrap was out of it.
I will leave it as my inheritance was gone before I got to town. I lived fifteen hundred miles away. I got nothing, until years later guilt brought out a small portion of what my grandmother had wanted me to have.
I did get something special and more important to me. A couple years before her death my grandmother gave me her cookbooks and notes. I still miss her happy face.

I get benign labrynthitis, and that ear resolved on day two. No clogging or hearing problems.
The other was stuffy from it being goldenrod season & it got warm water in it last week; it seemed to have come out, but still dizzy and then couldn’t hear.
Tried those Dubrox drops and made it less dizzy, just off-balance. Hearing is in & out; mostly out.
