Watchdog launches criminal probe over missing Secret Service messages

By Carol D. Leonnig and Maria Sacchetti

The Department of Homeland Security’s watchdog has launched a criminal probe into the Secret Service’s erased text messages from around the time of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

The department’s Office of Inspector General immediately instructed Secret Service to halt its forensic search for agents’ telephone texts.

Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi confirmedThursday that the inspector general notified the agency in a letter about the investigation. He said the Secret Service alerted lawmakers investigating the Capitol attack by supporters of former president Donald Trump about the probe.

“We have informed the January 6th Select Committee of the Inspector General’s request and will conduct a thorough legal review to ensure we are fully cooperative with all oversight efforts and that they do not conflict with each other,” Guglielmi said in a statement.

The letter from Inspector General Joseph V. Cuffari’s office came within an hour of a Washington Post story Wednesday revealing that his office had failed for months to alert Congress that the Secret Service deleted texts for this key period of time surrounding Jan. 6.

Popcorn! (Thanks for that heads up, Poobah)

  3. Reporters saying former WH counsel Cipollone video testimony gonna be huge tonight. Some insiders testifying in disguise. Gonna be a big night. Like a mob trial.

  4. Am looking forward to Gramma’s meatballs and 1/6 committee’s fricassee á l’orange.

  5. Dumbass is such a blithering idiot I’m deeply embarrassed that he was president of the US.

  6. Just briefly put on Fox News to see if they were showing the hearing…. Nope… they’re showing Fucker Carlson show.

  7. Hi Craig and everyone …. what makes me sick to my stomach, more so than everything we are learning or being reminded of, is that this report will make NOT.ONE.BIT.OF.DIFFERENCE to the T supporters, and perhaps not even to most R’s who, while not admiring T but being willing to overlook aLL his treasonous acts, will still vote for him again because of their hatred for all things Democrat.

  8. How many were actually at the rally and/or stormed the Capitol on J/6?
Some of the clips were interesting as to how the rioters perceived their numbers.  Hundreds of thousands.  Nope. A million. Nope.   But, how many?   Mass hysteria.

  9. “Think about that. Leader McCarthy, who was one of the President’s strongest supporters, was scared and begging for help. President Trump turned him down. So he tried to call the President’s children,” Rep. Kinzinger says.

  10. 🎼 When danger reared its ugly head, Josh Hawley turned his tail and fled, O brave brave brave, brave Josh Hawley ran away… 🎶

  11. Trump WH press aide Sarah Matthews testifies to the Jan. 6 committee that Trump didn’t want to include any mention of “peace” in a tweet to call off the rioters. “It wasn’t until Ivanka Trump suggested the phrase ‘stay peaceful,’ that he finally agreed to include it.”

  12. Matthews on her reaction to Trump’s video calling people in the mob “special” – “Indefensible… I knew I would be resigning that evening.”

  13. Matthews says Trump’s 6:01 p.m. tweet on Jan. 6. where he wrote, “Remember this day forever!” cemented her decision to resign. “January 6…was one of the darkest days in our nation’s history and Pres. Trump was treating it as a celebratory occasion.”

  14. We should pass a law that when Mussolini Trump finally goes he doesn’t get a state funeral. Imagine the horror of the man who invaded the Capitol lying in state in the Rotunda.

  15. Like that, Poobah. I’m thinking a shallow unmarked grave in Florida – face down in a cheap wooden box.

  16. Cheney ends: “Let me assure you: this Committee understands the gravity of this moment, and the consequences for our nation. We have much work yet to do, and will see you all again in September.”

  17. When Liz mentioned the grown-ass men harassing Cassidy Hutchins and other women for testifying… I’ll bet they all have mommy issues.

  18. Maybe he’ll take his entire mob family somewhere without an extradition treaty to live out the rest of his days in obscurity.
