John Oliver Praises NFL Decision To Tap Bad Bunny As Halftime Show Performer: “One Of The Hottest, Most Commercially Successful People Alive”

While Fox News and other right-wing outlets decried the NFL decision to have Bad Bunny perform at next year’s Super Bowl Halftime show, one media personality – John Oliver – is a big fan, praising the superstar Latin trap artist while addressing recent headlines on tonight’s installment of Last Week Tonight.

“The NFL controversially gave the Super Bowl Halftime show to one of the hottest, most commercially successful people alive,” he quipped.

After the appointment of the Puerto Rico-hailing musician, the Department of Homeland Security announced it would send ICE agents to the venue, with DHS Secretary Kristi Noem doubling-down on the matter later.

Last night, the singer-songwriter addressed the furor during his monologue on the Season 51 opening episode of Saturday Night Live. “I’m very happy, and I think everyone is happy about it, even Fox News,” the three-time Grammy winner said, the show then cutting to spliced-together footage from the network, which said: “Bad Bunny is my favorite musician. He should be the next president.”

  1. getting to know Benito

“There’s nothing better than being yourself” says global music superstar Bad Bunny, telling Stephen Colbert that Benito and Bad Bunny are ultimately the same person, before sharing his perfect day in Puerto Rico. Stick around for more with Bad Bunny and watch him in “Happy Gilmore 2” opening in theaters on July 25th.

“I got emotional” says Bad Bunny about meeting his “Happy Gilmore 2” co-star Adam Sandler for the first time. Watch Benito give Stephen Colbert some fashion advice, and go see “Happy Gilmore 2” in theaters on July 25th.

Global superstar and Grammy-winning singer Bad Bunny has been getting hotter and hotter lately. His celebrity reaches beyond the music industry, spanning generations and encompassing politics, Caribbean culture and Puerto Rican and Latin pride. John Yang speaks with Yale professor Albert Sergio Laguna about what makes Bad Bunny such a phenomenon.

  4. Anon – There’s actually Gaga’s “Paparazzi” and Portugal The Man’s “Feel It Still” riffs in that song. “Wi$h Li$t” is a better song than the opening track, IMO.

Bad Bunny probably making a fortune from the commercial usage of “Manaco.” I’d swear it’s in multiple ads.

10 Bad Bunny Bangers Translated Into English Ahead Of The 2026 Super Bowl Halftime Show
Some have expressed concern over a potential language barrier, but we’ve got you covered!

It’s what has allowed international audiences — who don’t speak a lick of English — to enjoy American artistry for decades. While language is a connection point for many, a perfect understanding has never been a requirement to enjoy music from any part of the world — that is if you truly love it.

Some, however, become a bit intimidated by the thought of consuming art from a culture/language in which they are not fluent. This became even more evident when Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny was announced as the 2026 Super Bowl Halftime Show headliner, leading to some expressing concerns over a large percentage of the audience not being able to understand the performer — who almost exclusively performs in his native tongue.

For those who fall into this category, but still want to embrace and enjoy the experience, VIBE has compiled a list of Bad Bunny’s biggest hits and their translations from Spanish into English. We’ve also added clips of the original tracks that you can listen to while reading to really help it all sink in. Before you know it, you’ll be ready for El Conejo Malo’s halftime show setlist in no time!

From “Dákiti” to “NUEVAYoL,” check out translations of some of Bad Bunny’s biggest hits below. [continues]

  6. Hey, we all know “Frère Jacques,” so we can learn some Bad Bunny, even if it’s just a few phrases. He’s a vibe, so it’s enjoyable without knowing what the words mean.

The U.S. Supreme Court term for 2025-2026 officially begins today, Monday. The first Monday in October is the day officially set by law for the Court to reconvene after its summer break. That means the Justices will start hearing cases and making decisions on the cases it has on its docket. These cases will be briefed and argued orally before the Court, unlike the decisions off of the Shadow Docket that we’ve been seeing recently.

The Court’s calendar indicates the days, marked in red, when it will hear oral argument in cases. The Justices will add in additional days as necessary.

  9. imo, what’s below their racism is their “scarcity mentality.” They’re fine with multi-colored people who stay where they belong. Just don’t let them come here, take up our space and our stuff. They are the kids who were taught not to share in kindergarten.

  10. Jamie – Ha! I actually had a dream that Rita Moreno opened for Bad Bunny at the Super Bowl. She just sang one word: “America”

  11. And it’s the language issue

Good point, Craig. Previous generations of immigrants did not always teach their children the mother tongue, they made them speak English. My grandfather did not teach my mother his language; Mr. Ivy’s parents did not teach him.

  12. It is much easier to learn a language at an early age which was why so many immigrant adults, used their children as translators when having to deal with the world outside their homes. English is a difficult language courtesy of stealing any word not nailed down as untranslatable, so it is constantly growing. Two words meaning the same exist because one is Latin based and the other Germanic. A good read on the history of the language is “The Story of English” by Robert McCrum.

  13. If ABBA performed a Swedish-only halftime show, it wouldn’t be a problem.

Creepy Andrew Cuomo is on The View. Trying to other Mamdani. FAC & FDT

My great-grandmother didn’t teach her kids any Danish. The entire community came from Denmark, but the language was gone in one generation.

He’s lying. He’s saying Mamdani is a communist. Muted him. Even listening to him with one, good ear is too much.

  14. I’m rather skeptical of the magical time when all immigrants insisted that their children speak English at home. That would require proficient English speaking parents. Not something I noticed in immigrant households. I suspect that current immigrants have greater English skills simply because of 2 reasons. First our schools do a better job of educating with extensive English as a second language courses. Second there are many more job opportunities for women. So mom gets out of the house and has more need of English skills.

    Jack

  15. BiD
What I noticed in the Polish community that came over post WWII. Grandma spoke mostly Polish with limited English skills, Grandpa spoke an English pigeon, for work and Polish. The children could speak enough Polish to communicate with Mom. The Grandchildren knew enough words to be polite to grandma.
All future generations would tell me how terrible it was that they lost all their cultural heritage.

  16. https://www.thedailybeast.com/maga-proposes-creed-as-super-bowl-replacement-for-bad-bunny/

MAGA influencer and Creed fanboy Jack Posobiec, 40, has been leading a semi-ironic online push to have the “Higher” band put on a “counter” halftime performance hosted by the late Charlie Kirk’s organization Turning Point USA.

Creed has not had a hit song since 2002, when “One Last Breath” saw mild chart success, and have not released an album since 2009. The NFL has selected legacy acts to perform the Halftime Show before, though The Who’s 2010 performance was the last time the NFL chose an act that was not actively making new music.

Since the NFL announced Bad Bunny would perform at the Halftime Show, conservatives have been engaging in their annual meltdown over the selection.

Conservative commentator Benny Johnson called Bad Bunny a “massive Trump hater,” an “Anti-ICE activist,” and bemoaned that he has “no songs in English.” Megyn Kelly called the selection a “middle finger to MAGA.”

    ***
Turning Point USA announced they will be hosting their own concert during the Super Bowl Halftime show, using “fully Christian, American” performers.

Bad Bunny is a Christian (Catholic).
Bad Bunny is an American citizen (from Puerto Rico).

*Smells like racism. They can have their sad, little Creed-fest.

  17. My best friend (still is, talked with her this morning) never had an actual conversation with her grandmother. She would hear her mother and grandmother talking to one another (in French Canadian) but she didn’t know what they were saying.

  18. My friend, btw, turned maga. Upsets me greatly, but there are other things we still can talk about.

  19. Mrs. P’s Mother’s parents were immigrants to the US before she was born. She spoke some Italian, but very little. Mrs. P’s father’s parents were Italian, immigrated here after WWII. Her father (and his 7 siblings) all came here and spoke fluent English by the time I met them, and in the case of her father, moderately accented, but he spoke fluent Italian and even made fun of her mom and some of her Italian friends who were born here when they would speak Italian. One I recall distinctly is a woman who, while born and educated in America, sounded like she had just arrived from Italy (accent wise) but didn’t have a command of Italian. She used to refer to vinegar as “vinegre” (in Italian – aceto), which is of Old French and Aglo-French origin. Mrs. P’s dad would not use Italian to talk to or teach his kids Italian. Mrs. P. took a couple of semesters of Italian in college and picked up a little, but like me and French she’s forgotten more than she learned.

  20. how terrible it was that they lost all their cultural heritage.

This is very true, Jack, but the immigrants’ goal was to be American. They were trying to forget the bad things (pogroms and such) in the old country that made them have to leave.

I once tried to ask my then-new grandmother-in-law what it was like and suddenly all her English failed and she couldn’t understand my questions.

  21. “fully Christian, American performers.” (Creed? Some white country singers? Lee Greenwood? That about it?) I just bet that will be riveting.

  22. Jack – My great-grandfather’s family came from England in the 1640s, so there was one English speaker in the house.

My great-grandmother worked in a sewing sweatshop in Chicago when she came over after her mother died. She was about 14, and her older sister sent got her. Part of the deal was English classes, probably just to help with work communications. She ended up on a train to Nebraska to work for some shirttail relatives. They were terrible to her. She married the first guy who came along; my great-grandpa, the rural mail carrier.

  23. My great-grandmother was speaking Danish either one of her neighbors. I asked about it and she told me Ingner liked to use language from the old country, so she did it for her. She taught me one sentence when I asked, and then never heard her speak Danish, again. She grew up in a poor farm/welfare farm and they were lucky to even have socks. Her mother was the ironing woman.

After her husband died, and her sister died, she married his sister’s husband and moved to Florida. She was warm, happy, and not poor for twenty years. After her second husband died, she ended up in section 8 housing in Nebraska, which was a community of farm wives, many of them from Denmark like her.

  24. Are they showing SFB 2020 tapes of Portland, again?

Any new stuff may not be Portlanders, as there were reports of agitators with microphones descending on Portland.

They go after the most vulnerable, like the elderly or disabled, so it will incite violence. Do not take the bait.

That’s why we need a huge, prolonged strike and even more boycotts.

If nobody is on the street to harass or arrest, and we can still show our displeasure with the N&zi regime, it’s better.

Silence at the cash register is the opposite of golden.

  25. My paternal grandmother spoke Finnish, I picked up on it from time at their house. Once I started in school I was to no longer hear or speak it. My maternal grandmother came from Finland, but died before I was born.

Having worked with Mexican women groups in Colorado most of the leaders, in their fifties and sixties at the time, had the same thing in their lives. Because they were working directly with women who speak Spanish they were learning it in their middle age.

  26. The white racists are terrified of having a person of color for a boss. God forbid she’s a woman also.

  28. https://www.newsweek.com/chicago-brandon-johnson-executive-order-ice-national-guard-10834723

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order on Monday establishing “ICE Free Zones” across city-owned properties, barring federal immigration agents from using municipal spaces for civil enforcement operations.

The order prohibits Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from staging personnel or equipment in city-controlled parking lots, garages, and vacant lots.
The move drew immediate backlash from the White House’s Rapid Response 47 account, which accused Johnson of “aiding and abetting criminal illegal immigrant killers, rapists, traffickers, and gang bangers.”

*Ah, yes, the children ripped from their apartments in the middle of the night and zip-tied for hours. ~Gang bangers~ Got it.

BiD, Judge Immergut may have a thing or two to say about that. WaPo

Judge deals Trump new setback in plans to deploy troops to Portland
U.S. District Judge Karin J. Immergut temporarily blocked the administration from sending any state’s National Guard troops under federal control to Portland.

A federal judge late Sunday dealt another blow to the Trump administration’s plans to send troops to Portland after a weekend of heated confrontations between protesters and federal agents there, temporarily blocking hundreds of California National Guard members as they were deploying to Oregon’s biggest city over objections from Democratic governors in both states.

U.S. District Judge Karin J. Immergut said the government appeared to be directly defying her previous temporary restraining order from a day earlier blocking the administration from sending Oregon’s National Guard to the city by instead deploying members of California’s Guard.

Immergut, a Trump appointee confirmed to the bench in 2019, issued a new, broader order Sunday to prohibit the administration from deploying any state’s National Guard troops under federal control to Oregon.

The decision came after California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) joined a lawsuit filed by Oregon as the Pentagon confirmed that Trump ordered about 200 National Guard members to be reassigned from California. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek said later Sunday that about 100 had arrived and were sent to a camp operated by the Oregon Military Department, and about 100 were on the way.

Newsom celebrated the decision, saying in a statement that California’s National Guard would be heading home: “Donald Trump tried to turn our soldiers into instruments of his political will, and while our fight continues, tonight the rule of law said ‘hell no.’”

Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield (D) said earlier that the state would expand its legal effort to include fighting deployments from out of state, accusing the president of being “hell-bent” on using the military “absent the facts or authority to do so.”

“It is up to us and the courts to hold him accountable,” Rayfield said on X.

Late Sunday, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) said that the Guard in his state was informed that Trump had ordered 400 members of the Texas National Guard to be sent to Illinois, Oregon and other locations. Trump on Saturday had ordered the activation of 300 National Guard troops to Chicago against the wishes of Pritzker.

Greta Thunberg landed in Athens on Monday alongside 160 other nationals from 16 European countries expelled to Greece by Israel for taking part in a Gaza aid flotilla, AFP journalists saw.

The 22-year-old Swedish climate campaigner had been among hundreds of people who had been on the 45-vessel flotilla that had unsuccessfully tried to break through an Israeli blockade to deliver aid to Gaza.

The United Nations says famine has taken hold in that Palestinian territory after two years of devastating war.

On arrival at the airport, Thunberg called the Global Sumud Flotilla “the biggest ever attempt to break Israel’s illegal and inhumane siege by sea”.

“That this mission has to exist is a shame!” she added, urging the world to act to prevent Israel’s “genocide” of the Palestinians.

“We are not even seeing the bare minimum from our governments,” Thunberg said.

She had even (gasp!) dated an Armenian boy in 1930s Fresno which was the equivalent of having an assignation with a Martian. She still almost had a cow when she found out I was dating a Catholic. Those Southern Baptists are hard core.

  37. Anon, fuck ’em. Go to that new Latin club and enjoy the music and food (if they have food).

No biblical scholar here, but you’re right about that Peter and Catholic church stuff – of course the rednecks in the South put the Catholic Church in close to the same league as the Jewish faith, what with Protestant churches being in their minds where the true faith is down there, and somehow can find justification for their abhorrent racist views in their religion. And Jamie, it ain’t just the Southern Baptists, although they unquestionably set the standard.

In a dramatic live television appearance, former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi called on the National Football League to cancel Bad Bunny’s upcoming Super Bowl halftime performance, sparking intense debate and a wave of reactions across social media. Bondi accused the NFL of using the halftime show as a vehicle for “woke propaganda” rather than pure entertainment, and her closing remarks—threatening accountability for sponsors and broadcasters

*There are more of us woke folk than MAGAts. Sponsors would be stupid to comply with the N&zi party. They know what happened to Target, Paramount Plus, and Disney.

She argued that the halftime show would be “more than just music,” warning that it would serve as a “cleverly disguised political statement” promoting radical social movements under the guise of art. “I refuse to see America’s biggest stage used to push an agenda that erodes our traditional values,” Bondi declared
