  1. 2 tweets of interest last night following joe’s speech. they are particularly of note because they came from a GOPer gov

    @GovLarryHogan
I applaud President Biden for adopting several of our recommendations to increase the production of vaccines. We are prepared to administer every vaccine that the federal government can deliver. We are all in this together, and we will end this pandemic together.

    @GovLarryHogan
Our family greatly appreciates the president’s comments condemning the awful rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans. It truly is “un-American and it must stop.”

  2. this will have to do until H.R. 1 is enacted

    from march 7 rollingstone:

President Joe Biden signed an executive order expanding voting rights on Sunday.

Biden announced the signing during a remote video message to the Martin and Coretta King Unity Breakfast, marking the 56th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday,” during which voting rights marchers were brutally attacked by law enforcement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala.

Biden’s order directs federal agencies to develop plans that would promote voter registration, improve access to voting and fight against misinformation that the previous administration and its allies have continuously promoted.

    […]

The order also follows this week’s passing of HR1 legislation by the House that looks to overhaul campaign finance laws and clamp down on partisan gerrymandering in congressional districts. Whether the bill will make it through the Senate is in question, with Senate Republicans already balking at its passing in the House, where it passed mostly along partisan lines 220-210.

Biden said HR1 is “a landmark piece of legislation that is urgently needed to protect the right to vote, the integrity of our elections, and to repair and strengthen our democracy.”

“I hope the Senate does its work so that I can sign it into law,” the president said.

  3. Now, why do I think its “long history of bipartisan support” will vanish?   The sound of more voters voting is a death knell for Republicans.

ps – Why does Louis DeJoy still have a job? The decommissioning of sorting machines was done outside of what could directly be considered voter suppression. Where there’s an evil will, there’s a way we haven’t even considered.

  4. BiD, what bink said and this from motherjones feb 25:

President Biden on Wednesday announced three nominees to the Postal Service Board of Governors, a move that if confirmed, would tilt the nine-member board in favor of Democrats and could potentially lead to the removal of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy.
    […]
The announcement on Wednesday came on the same day that DeJoy testified before the House where he faced questions on the continued widespread delays plaguing the agency. DeJoy refused to take responsibility for the ongoing delays and instead blamed the agency for being “operationally faulty.” In one moment, when asked how much longer he expected to remain at the helm of the USPS, DeJoy was notably combative.
“Long time,” he shot back. “Get used to it.”
As my colleague Ari Berman noted last month, Biden’s move to fill the vacant board seats and seek more control over the embattled agency would mark a significant step in restoring democracy post-Donald Trump. It also could blunt DeJoy’s efforts to potentially privatize the independent agency.
    […]
Biden’s nominees, which require Senate confirmation, are all postal experts. They include Anton Hajjar, the former general counsel of the American Postal Workers Union, Amber McReynolds, the National Vote at Home Institute CEO, and Ron Stroman, a former deputy postmaster general.

  5. from new yorker story “Can Cyrus Vance, Jr. Nail Trump”:

Insiders say that the Manhattan District Attorney’s investigation has dramatically intensified since the former President left office. “It’s like night and day,” says one. According to another, “They mean business.”
    […]
The investigative phase of the Trump case will likely be complete before Vance’s term ends, leaving to him the crucial decision of whether to bring criminal charges. But any trial would almost surely rest in the hands of his successor. Daniel R. Alonso, Vance’s former top deputy, who is now a lawyer at Buckley, L.L.P., predicts that if Trump is indicted “it will be nuclear war.”
Trump has already demonstrated a willingness to engage in almost unthinkable tactics to protect himself. Among his social circle in Palm Beach, speculation abounds that Florida’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, an ally, might not honor an extradition request from New York if a bench warrant were issued for Trump’s arrest. Dave Aronberg, the state’s attorney for Palm Beach County, doubts that such defiance would stand. Extradition, he points out, is a constitutional duty, and a governor’s role in it is merely “ministerial.” But he admitted that the process might not go smoothly: “You know what? I thought January 6th would go smoothly. Congress’s role was just ministerial then, too.” (DeSantis did not respond to a request for comment.)
    […]
It’s a stress test of the American justice system. George Conway, a lawyer and a Trump critic, who is married to the former President’s adviser Kellyanne Conway, said, “Trump is a man who has gotten away with everything his entire life. He’s an affront to the rule of law, and to all law-abiding citizens.” In office, Trump often treated the law as a political weapon, using the Justice Department as a tool for targeting enemies. Now he is pitted against a D.A. who regards the law as the politically blind foundation of democracy. As Conway put it, “For Trump, the law is a cudgel. For Vance, it’s what holds us together as a civilization. And that’s why people who thumb their noses at it have to be prosecuted. If they aren’t, you’re taking a big step toward a world where that is acceptable.”

  6. weird

    business insider via msn:

Fox News added an unusual feature to its airing of President Joe Biden’s first prime-time speech on Thursday: real-time reactions of Tucker Carlson watching it.

    […]

The speech coincided with the beginning of Carlson’s 8 p.m. show. Fox News aired Biden’s delivery and included a “Live Tucker reaction” box in the lower right corner on the screen.

As Biden’s speech went on, the box showed Carlson maintaining a look of puzzlement, at times variously frowning and nodding throughout much of the address.

In one instance, when Biden said that anti-Asian abuse “is wrong, un-American and it must stop,” Carlson briefly raised his eyebrows,…

    […]

Toward the end of the speech, Fox News also included chyrons that said: BIDEN SPEECH NEARLY FINISHED; TUCKER WILL RESPOND,” and “BIDEN SHOULD BE FINISHED; TUCKER IS ON ANY MINUTE,” Mediaite reported.

The stunt spurred commentary and memes from across the political spectrum almost instantly.

    […]

The move reflects the network’s continued infusion of opinion into straight news as the long-dominant network sees a ratings dip.

Lachlan Murdoch, the CEO of Fox Corp, said last week that the network’s approach throughout the Biden administration would be “loyal opposition,” in the mold of MSNBC during Donald Trump’s presidency.

  7. DeJoy, Wapo.

DeJoy asks House panel for more USPS money to support plan that includes slower mail delivery

The postmaster general testified before lawmakers for the second time in three weeks on struggling delivery rates and postal reform legislation

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy asked congressional appropriators for more money Thursday to support his still-unreleased strategic plan for the nation’s mail agency and tried to reset expectations for slower but more consistent service.

Testifying before the House Appropriations subcommittee on financial service, DeJoy said the U.S. Postal Service needs to “recast that expectation of what it is that we’re able to do” to stem financial losses. Lawmakers had previously questioned DeJoy on a Washington Post report that he would stop flying first-class mail cross-country and planned to eliminate a speedier category of first-class mail to cut costs and help the agency make delivery windows.

DeJoy confirmed those plans Thursday and said they were a necessary evolution for the agency, which is struggling to both right its balance sheet and define its core services in an era of less paper and more packages.
    (…😏)

Mrs. P. got a card from her mom yesterday.  It was postmarked 3/4 in Seattle.  For those doing the math – it took 7 days to get here.  DeJoy wants to slow the mail down? Perfect managerial two step – can’t meet performance goals, so change the goals and ask for more money to meet them. AS we’ve said for the past 4 years, if you elect a clown expect a circus.

  8. Lachlan needs to rethink his analysis.  Unless Fox stops confusing intentionally misleading lies for truth (not something MSNBC did during the Dumbass years) Fox will not be the loyal opposition, but rather the disloyal enemy.

  9. motherjones:

Roger Stone has an Oath Keeper problem.
In recent days the FBI arrested two men, Joshua James, the owner of a cleaning services companyin Alabama, and Roberto Minuta, a Newburgh, New York, tattoo artist, for taking part in the seditious attack on the US Capitol. Both men are members of that far-right militia. They each were part of a group of Oath Keepers that provided security for Stone, the longtime Trump adviser, the day before the assault, when Stone was in Washington, DC, whipping up support for the January 6 protest. That brings to at least five the number of Oath Keepers arrested in relation to the attack who also appear to have guarded Stone at Stop the Steal events. The Justice Department has alleged that three of these militia members helped plan the Capitol onslaught and were part of a conspiracy to block Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s victory.
This could create legal problems for Stone, a self-described political dirty trickster, who last year received a pardon from President Donald Trump related to his conviction for lying to Congress in 2017 during the Trump-Russia investigation. Prosecutors are reportedly investigating Stone’s communications with extremists involved in the Capitol attack. The arrested Oath Keepers will likely face pressure to cooperate with prosecutors and reveal any information they may possess about any involvement Stone or other Trump associates may have had in plans or preparations to invade the Capitol.
    […]
The New York Times has reported that at least four other members of Stone’s January 5 security detail entered the Capitol the next day. Those four have not been publicly identified or charged.
Oath Keepers connected to Stone have also been indicted for allegedly being part of a plot that led to the attack on the Capitol. In mid-February, prosecutors charged three Florida Oath Keepers with participating in a conspiracy “with others known and unknown to obstruct the United States Congress’ affirmation of the Electoral College vote regarding the results of the 2020 U.S. presidential Election, and that they committed other related federal crimes in furtherance of purpose.”

  10. sturge, huffpo reported that line of the night “I need you to do your part, I need you” was in sharp  contrast to the former guy’s “i alone can fix it” and garnered quite a lot of social media comments.

  11. Really who cares what Carlson does. He is a Trump Buffoon.  No original thought just parroting the trump party line.  He is stupid and uneducated.  He couldn’t take part in a debate. Too shallow.

  12. I am in Cazadero Ca and a friend sent a first class letter from Guerneville about 10 miles down the road.  Both towns have post offices.  It took 10 days to get to me.

  13. https://www.texastribune.org/2021/03/11/texas-republicans-social-media/

TX GQP love their hate speech. Greg Abbott is trying to do the the right thing with regard to one, nasty website, so the nazis will now go after him.

“… as well as other Abbott critics — also pointed out that just six days ago, Abbott traveled to Tyler to throw his weight behind legislation that he said showed Texas was “taking a stand against Big Tech political censorship.”

Taking both sides. Good luck with that.

Really, it seems an easy way for Feds to track the creeps.

  14. The “Re-branding”  goes on  –
    The party of death………..

States with Republican governors had highest Covid incidence and death rates, study finds

The study found that states with Democratic governors had higher death rates early on in the pandemic, but that trend was reversed by the Fourth of July.

  15. Happy to see Bama making mince meat out of Mississippi State in the SEC tournament.  34 point lead halfway through the 2nd half.

    Final score 85-48. Roll Tide.

  16. When over half of NY’s congressional delegation is calling for him to step down it doesn’t look good for him.

  17. the NYdems look like they’re in another al franken situation by not allowing the 2 investigations to be completed before firing up the tar & feathers.

also remember back during the primaries when they wanted joe to get out of the race because of his hugs and kisses?

  18. So in the hearing today, Dejoy said “I am a human being, and I am trying to do the right thing.”
Riiiight .. Save his ___ (Three letters – you can fill in the blanks)

  19. patd, yes, I remember well, and I also have painful memories of the Dem pig pile on Franken.  I think they should let the investigations play out, but I think it will be hard for Andrew to stay in that long.

  20. pogo, cleveland plain dealer cartoonist darcy came up with quite a portrait of manchin yesterday

    Manchin Donkphant

While not wanting to eliminate the filibuster, DNC-GOP hybrid Sen. Joe Manchin said he is open to making it more “painful” to use.

also in his oped, darcy quoted norm ornstein on his novel idea to fix the filibuster by flipping the vote to require 40  votes to allow it to continue rather than 60 votes to stop it.

  21. Done deal.

Schumer, Gillibrand issue joint statement: “Due to the multiple, credible sexual harassment and misconduct allegations, it is clear that Governor Cuomo has lost the confidence of his governing partners and the people of New York. Governor Cuomo should resign.”

  22. I’m with Pogo on this one.

Obviously Cuomo is at best an ill tempered, insensitive jerk.  He may or may not be guilty of sexual harassment.  Given my history in the work place, I find most of the complaints rather minimal without additional confirmation.   If the legislators who work with and know him best are saying he’s become too big a problem, then it might be time to depart.  I don’t have to like it.

  23. how many complaints were made about joe?

i’m with jamie & pogo.  do the investigation, get the facts.

  24. bink’s right about the republicans. according to this latest poll in the hill 81% of GOPers still have a favorable view of that former guy.  you know the guy that 22 women said he groped or raped or otherwise sexually assaulted them.

  25. Spring has come to my little corner of the Cosmos, at 6 AM this morning I could smell the Gulf of Mexico riding in on a stiff Southeast breeze.
    The car wet with dew.
And by 5 PM we had our first tornado of the season on the ground at Shallowater , a long ropy snake.  Ping-Pong hail .
We have been in a deep dry gulch  for months on end.  The idea of a quarter inch of rain , is like getting a #19  shot.
Watch Estes Park, in Colorado this weekend. Their forecast sez 4 Feet  of snow.   This one is going to be  VERY  big dump there.  And breed tornados along the dragon’s tail  down to where I am.  That could get really bad as well.
The other reason it’s Spring here …………… I saw a Roadrunner in Micky Dee’s drive thru , yesterday .
    It winked at me.

  26. I miss the Blonde Wino .
When I did the ” Blue Cron Experiment “,  the idea of mailing blue corn to her in New Mexico  seemed like the most logical idea I ever had.
I was throwing up a boat  load of  pages  back then , Blogger cut most of them.
But they left this one alone  the last post was on 4-3-2011 ……… A real time capsule .

  27. Mrs. P wants to see that complaints were made when the alleged offensive conduct occurred. Absent complaints filed contemporaneously she isn’t convinced.

  28. What I want to know about Cuomo is why now?   If this has being going on (some here said he was known as “Randy Andy”), why didn’t this come to light long ago?

  29. Mario is chum .  That much is clear.
    BUT !
He ain’t Bill Cosby chum .
Or the other rouges with money and power that followed, ” America’s Dad “.
All of these accounts about the Gov. sound like he’s a 13 year-old boy  with a 5 o-clock  shadow ,  trying to get a date .  Plus he has the personality  of a 68 year-old Italian honey badger.

  30. My Nancy  Check. ……………
I am going to buy $200.00  of compost for our food bank’s garden , “The Grub Farm”.  We have a big compost maker here . I’m going to get them  truck it to the farm for free.  Both sites are very close together.
But, I’m also going  set up  a funding page .
You can never have too much compost.

And I’m going to get 10 Tens and every time I see someone in need , I’m going to give them  a 10.

Rolling Thunder here, the rain has started.

  31. Rain on the roof  along the  thunder far away , and muffled . The air is so soupy it blocks the crack of lighting .
Estes  is going to get nailed.

  32. More sheets of RAIN !
    YES , YES, Yes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Big thunder now , fat rain drops , and hail starting now. I’ll take it, it’s water.

This whole story drives me crazy .
Have you ever been to Santa Barbara ?
These are not the down trodden .
Hours of news time given to this story . I mean hours.

  40. A word about things we cannot see.
Of all the human deaths ever ,  Smallpox tops the list.
We chased it off the face of the Earth.  It only lives in our Labs.
Polio  is near the same fate , but fools and morons are afraid of needles.
