  1. U.S. Senate candidates Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff talk about what they want to do to help the people of Georgia if they are elected.

  2. Looks like the Russian SVR is on a mission today.Ā  Google and YouTube are offline.Ā  It takes more than a hiccup to bring the big ones down.Ā  I see Google just recovered and Maps is working again.Ā

Twitter humour – someone in Mountain View (high tech place) unplugged something they should not have touched

  3. Ossoff is one of the most impressive speakers I’ve ever heard.
    Love Rev. Warnock. Ā Ā
Let’s hope the big, Bloomberg-type money has also handled the logistics of physically moving folks to their polling place. Ā

Now, ā€œcredible threats of violenceā€ ahead of the state’s electoral college vote Monday — a pivotal step in cementing the swing state’s votes for President-elect Joe Biden — have forced Michigan’s top lawmakers to close all legislative offices in Lansing.
Gideon D’Assandro, a spokesperson for state House Speaker Lee Chatfield (R), confirmed on Sunday to The Washington Post that Michigan House and Senate leadership consulted with the state police regarding the threats. The state Capitol, where the vote is set to take place, was already set to be closed to the public Monday.
Details about the threats remain unspecified and unconfirmed. D’Assandro declined further comment about the closures, Michigan State Police referred a request for comment to lawmakers, and the offices of Whitmer and Democratic leaders in the state legislature did not immediately respond to requests for comment late on Sunday.
Amber McCann, a spokesperson for Michigan Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey (R), said in an email to The Post that the decision to close legislative offices ā€œwas not made because of anticipated protests, but was made based on credible threats of violence.ā€
Yet after a year filled with volatile rallies in Lansing and several instances of high-profile political violence, the lawmakers’ public statements about the threats show that all sides are on edge ahead of Monday’s electoral college vote —

In Arizona, another key swing state, security has been increased in the state Capitol executive tower in Phoenix, Bart Graves, a spokesperson for the Arizona Department of Public Safety, confirmed to The Post.

  5. The media's defining failure of 2020 Covering for the GOP

Americans who desperately need financial assistance, then Republicans would have already passed Covid relief.
That apparent fact has been on display all year. And yet throughout 2020, the Beltway press has provided political cover for the GOP by pretending it’s a mystery as to why relief hasn’t reached Americans, and that only “dysfunction” can explain the lack of Congressional action. Failing to hold Republicans accountable during a national health crisis now stands as the media’s defining failure of this crucial year, in part because it encapsulates so many hallmark media shortcomings of the Trump era.
The bogus Both Sides narrative has shifted into overdrive in recent days. Democrats are sponsoring a radically trimmed-down Covid relief bill, which actually has bipartisan support, but Republican leaders won’t allow a vote. Still, the press maintains that the two parties are to blame. “It’s the latest evidence Washington is broken: at the peak of the worst public health crisis in a century, the White House and Congress are struggling to deliver another round of relief,”Ā PoliticoĀ reported.

  6. the hill:

The Wall Street JournalĀ in anĀ editorialĀ published in Monday’s editions is callingĀ onĀ President TrumpĀ to concede the election.

The editorial notes the recent Supreme Court ruling declining to hear a lawsuit by TexasĀ attempting to throw out the results of four swing states that went for President-electĀ Joe Biden. The right-leaning paper also faults Democrats for promoting claims of Trump’s own illegitimacy as president, writing that such claims opened the door to his baseless claims of widespread voter fraud.

However, the editorial states, ā€œ[n]one of this excuses Mr. Trump’s attempts to delegitimize Mr. Biden’s victory on Nov. 3.ā€

ā€œEven if Mr. Biden’s narrow victory was overturned in one of the closely contested states, he would have more than 270 electoral votes.Ā John KerryandAl Goreboth would have won had they not narrowly lost Ohio and Florida, respectively, but they both conceded (Mr. Gore after a long legal fight),ā€ the editorial board wrote. ā€œRichard Nixon conceded in 1960 despite evidence that he was cheated out of Illinois. All did so at least in part to avoid tipping the U.S. into irreparable political division.ā€

The editorial acknowledges Trump ā€œrarely takes our advice,ā€ but adds that ā€œbitterness as a political strategy rarely wears wellā€ and predicts that his refusal to concede could lead to Republican losses in the Jan. 5 Georgia Senate runoffs and further violence in the streets.

ā€œMr. Trump has had his innumerable days in court and lost,ā€ the newspaper concludes. ā€œHe would do far better now to tout his accomplishments in office, which are many, and accept his not so horrible fate as one of 45 former American Presidents.ā€

  7. rolling stone:

Karl RoveĀ had some advice for the man who consistently claims toĀ ā€œnot like losersā€Ā ā€“ Americans do not like sore losers and Trump ā€œis on the edge of looking like a sore loser.ā€

After Fox News’ Chris Wallace asked the former deputy chief of staff to George W. Bush if he expects the outgoing president to continue to contest the election past Monday when theĀ Electoral CollegeĀ formally casts their ballots for president and vice president, Rove used the opportunity to speak to Trump’s endgame, and offered some unsolicited advice.

ā€œIf his goal is to lay the predicate to come back in 2024 and run again, he’s helping himself at least gain the nomination.ā€ Rove said, ā€œBut I think in the long run, he’s not helping himself or the country. America likes comebacks, but they don’t like sore losers. And he is on the edge of looking like a sore loser and probably will look like it after January 6th.ā€

    […]

Rove wasn’t the only Republican (not in office) to lay into Trump on Sunday morning. Chris Christie panned the president’s legal arguments as ā€œan absurdityā€ and asked Trump to ā€œshow us the evidenceā€ that the election should be overturned.

ā€œWell, listen, the legal theory put forward by [Trump’s] legal team and by the president is an absurdity,ā€ the former governor continued, ā€œAnd the reason why the Supreme Court didn’t take [the Texas lawsuit] is because it’s an absurd idea to think that any state or any number of states, no matter how good they are, can challenge another state’s right to run the election as they see fit. And also, there’s no evidence, as I’ve been saying, since election night. Show us the evidence.ā€

Christie also shined a light on Trump’s hypocrisy by giving examples of how easily the president has turned on Republican governors he once praised but is now trashing because they won’t go along with his election fraud scheme.

ā€œAnd what’s gotten even worse, though, Martha, I think is the attacks by the president on good, hardworking, decent Republican governors. And you’ve seen his attitude towards these folks change,ā€ Christie said.

  8. trumpity’s game plan always……KEEP THE GAME GOING!!

Using copter 1 to fly over his dangerous fans!

Now says he won’t get the vaccine. Fine. But what does that signal to his basket of deplorables??Ā

  9. renee, terrific cartoon!Ā  hope it gets a lot of attention at the capitol.Ā  maybe an enlargement on placards distributed to the critters prior to their jan 6th vote on the electoral college acceptence.

  10. My sister in law has it! Ā Good mask wearer and stay at homer. She is in Phoenix. So far mild symptoms but she lost her sense of smell. Ā Her daughter is a doctor also in Phoenix so hopefully she will be well taken care of
    she is 75 Ā Ā
thinking of xr and hoping for the best Ā

  11. Poobah (or patd) one’s in the oven.Ā  It didn’t look right, so check it over (and make sure hell isn’t spell ell).

Best wishes to your SIL, KC.Ā  Masks protect OK but better to prevent outgoing rather than incoming virus laden air.Ā  There’s only so much one can to to protect herself despite her best efforts.Ā  The bastards who refuse to participate hold the cards.

  12. For those wondering about the House challenges to the electoral votes of the states on January 6 (like me), here’s an explanation from NYT:

Under rules laid out in the Constitution and the Electoral Count Act of 1887, their challenges must be submitted in writing with a senator’s signature also affixed. No Republican senator has yet stepped forward to say he or she will back such an effort, though a handful of reliable allies of Mr. Trump, including Senators Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Rand Paul of Kentucky, have signaled they would be open to doing so.
The president has praised Mr. Brooks on Twitter, but has thus far taken no evident interest in the strategy. Aides say he has been more focused on battling to overturn the results in court.
Even if a senator did agree, constitutional scholars say the process is intended to be an arduous one. Once an objection is heard from a member of each house of Congress, senators and representatives will retreat to their chambers on opposite sides of the Capitol for a two-hour debate and then a vote on whether to disqualify a state’s votes. Both the Democratic-controlled House and Republican-controlled Senate would have to agree to toss out a state’s electoral votes — something that has not happened since the 19th century.
    [Oh, and…]
Several Senate Republicans — including Patrick J. Toomey of Pennsylvania, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Mitt Romney of Utah — have forcefully rejected the idea of overturning the results, and their votes would be enough for Mr. Biden to prevail with the support of Democrats.

There you have it – the nickel tour to Congress challenging the EC vote.

  13. EC count at this moment is Biden 166, Trump 120.Ā  Nevada was first contested state to report its votes – for Bidne/Harris.Ā  Arizona did the same.

  14. 1st it was “alternate facts” and now it’s “alternate electors” according to the hill:

President Trump‘sĀ allies are preparing to send an “alternate” slate of electors to Congress, senior White House adviserĀ Stephen MillerĀ said Monday,Ā signalingĀ Trump will drag out his efforts to overturn theĀ results of the 2020 election even after the Electoral College certifiesĀ Joe BidenĀ as the winner.

    […]

“The only date in the Constitution is Jan. 20. So we have more than enough time to right the wrong of this fraudulent election result and certify Donald Trump as the winner of the election,” Miller said on “Fox & Friends.”

“As we speak, today, an alternate slate of electors in the contested states is going to vote and we’re going to send those results up to Congress,” he continued. “This will ensure that all of our legal remedies remain open. That means that if we win these cases in the courts, that we can direct that the alternate state of electors be certified.”

  15. Todays count is just a step along the way. The real count is the one done on Jan 6. Expect a number of state’s slate of electors to be challenged at that time. Given the makeup of Congress expect the shit to hit the fan.Ā

    Jack

  16. Jack, I expect a shit show on January 6 that will amount to nothing.Ā  Joe will be sworn in on January 20, with or without Dumbass in attendance.

Count is 202-174 at the moment and Wapo is reporting that the 6 states at issue cast their votes for Biden.

  17. patd, is there something in the Constitution I missed about “alternate electors’?Ā  The only thing about electors in the Constitution is Electors.

  18. Pogo – those are the ones who got out of kindergarten by promising to make public fools of themselves as “actors” in a big dramedy.Ā  Their alternate universe, brown sky version, lets them believe anything a dictatorwannabe tells them.

  19. Pogo

There is an “objector” piece in the final Jan 6 vote in Congress.Ā  A member of the house can object in writing signed by at least one Member of Congress and one Senator to the person or bloc voting …. for whatever cause and demand a replacement.Ā  Then the members in both house have to vote on the objection.Ā  Trump still loses, but just more chaos for the cult.Ā

  20. Jamie, jack, Ā I’m aware. See my 12:02 post. The linked article explains the process to object.
After an objection is raised both houses retreat, debate for a couple hours and vote ….ā€Ā Both the Democratic-controlled House and Republican-controlled Senate would have to agree to toss out a state’s electoral votes — something that has not happened since the 19th century.ā€
    Ā
Pelosi holds the trump card (ironic isn’t it?).Ā
    Ā

  21. Jamie… Jack…. nah… it’s over. Ā Or as I say it… ova. Ā It was over the second trump told Erin… Ā or was it Emily… to let the transition start. Ā Everything else has been about trump making as much $$$ as possible until noontime Jan 20th.

  22. According to Wapo, we should see two milestones today – Biden will be confirmed the EC victor (240 – 232 as of 4:27 with Oregon, California and Hawaii left – 66 electors to take him to 306) and we’ll pass 300,000 Covid deaths (299,887 as of 4:00 p.m.) – kinda “the good with the bad” sort of thing.

  23. CA is in the process of casting their electoral votes for Biden/Harris, which will put them over the top.Ā  Wapo is now reporting 300,024 Covid deaths.Ā  The two milestones will have been met within an hour of each other.Ā  Somehow fitting I’d say – official reporting of Dumbass’ loss in the EC and his failure to manage Covid-19 writ large by crossing a very significant threshold.Ā Ā

  24. Stacey Abrams on “what’s at stake” in Georgia Senate runoff elections

Abrams said that 1.2 million Georgians have requested absentee ballots. Of that 1.2 million, she said 85,000 of those applications for mail-in ballots come from voters who didn’t cast ballots in November.Ā
“They are disproportionately voters between the ages of 18 and 29 and disproportionately people of color.” ……………Ā Abrams said that she believes COVID-19 relief will keep the Democratic momentum going.Ā
“As we head into a moment where Georgians face 160,000 evictions, we’ve had 4.1 million job loss claims, one-in-four businesses, small business have shut down during this pandemic,” Abrams said. “David and Kelly have done nothing. In fact, they have done nothing but cater to Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump instead of fighting for Georgia.”

  25. At 5:26Ā  p.m., EST, California cast its electoral votes for Joe Biden, giving them a total of 302 electoral votes, officially making Joe Biden the president elect of the United States.Ā  Hawaii will finish the EC voting sometime after 7:00 p.m. EST.
