  1. does the ban cover only coverings of the face?   freiheit fur alle!

‘muricans, liberate your drawers, your panties! 🙂

    wapo:

By his own account, his opposition to the ban on nude swimming and his resistance to coronavirus-related restrictions are part of the same fight. Both are “about freedom, which has to be defended against the government.”
Nude swimming has long been socially acceptable in other parts of eastern Germany and in Lychen, a town of about 3,000 people nestled between glassy lakes.
“Whoever wants to swim naked swims naked. And those who don’t, do not,” said vacation home landlord Martin Hansen, 60, who opposes the ban.
But in May, after it became apparent that the first wave of the coronavirus had largely bypassed the region, the Lychen town council turned its attention from social distancing restrictions to bathing rules. To some council members, naked fellow residents swimming, doing yoga and playing volleyball had been a growing annoyance. The mayor and council moved to ban all nude activity at popular public bathing spots.
The outrage that followed included an anonymous letter to the mayor, threatening to poison the town’s lakes if nudist swimming rights were infringed upon. The police announced an investigation. TV crews and newspaper journalists descended on Lychen.
The ban has since been invalidated because of a formal mistake but is expected to be reinstated.

Critics of the swimming ban have argued that the rule was rushed through the town council at a time when there was little room for a debate over the increasingly serious infringements on their freedoms.
“This perceived injustice was likely too much given the strain people experience due to corona anyhow,” Greifeneder said.Meanwhile, some in Lychen have watched in disbelief as the dispute spiraled into a national story.
“Humanity is at a crossroads,” Hansen theorized. But the problems the world should really care about, such as climate change, “are so big that they’re impossible to grasp.”
He mused further: “Of course, it destroys the vibe if you hear that the world is going down the drain.” In comparison, nude swimming controversies may be easier for people to handle.

  2.  About six weeks to Labor Day, the traditional kick off to the November elections.  Will America pay attention to politics, or have Americans already been deep into the muck?

I am rather irritated by the media constantly saying HRC lost in 2016.  She won the popular vote and the polls were not far off.  It was the handful of votes in certain counties that caused the Electoral College disaster.

With Biden increasing the spread every day the media has gone from how Biden will lose to how Biden might lose to it’s a toss-up but Biden will lose, to Biden has the lead but can lose, to Biden is in the lead but is fifteen points enough.  Not “fake” news, but more like conservative lead meme news.

  3. Thank you for the German town uproar.  In the midst of all the virus and election news, I was starting to think the rest of the world had ceased to exist.  Does anyone know who is running the globe while we are all distracted by staying alive?

  4. OTTAWA/MONTREAL (Reuters) – Canada’s efforts to flatten the curve of coronavirus cases have put the country on the cusp of zero deaths from COVID-19 for the first time since March, but officials see worrying signs of a new spike as provinces lift restrictions.
For months, Canadians followed strict public health rules on social movement as the 10 provinces quickly shut down large parts of the economy, ramped up testing and boosted space in intensive care units.
Some provinces curbed internal journeys while Ottawa barred international visitors, closed the land border to non-essential travel with the United States, which has become a global pandemic epicenter, and deployed military staff to hard-hit nursing homes.
Canadian deaths edged up eight to 8,798 according to government data late Tuesday, while the total number of cases grew by 331, to 108,486. By contrast, the United States recently set a one-day record in new cases with 60,500 as the national death toll rose to more than 135,000.

  5. Can’t wait for SFB to moon America — the last act of a desperate man   (you did see Dream Girls right?)

  6. GA could have had Stacey Abrams as governor, instead they a guy actively trying to get them killed.

    Nice job, Georgia.  Fucking dolts.

  7. If anyone, here, wants to cheer me up and tell me how Americans’ response (or lack thereof) to Covid-19 doesn’t collapse this society (or lack thereof), i’m “all ears”.

  8. Bink – I am willing to say we are already in the change to society that epidemics tend to cause.  Even if it stops today a major shift in the view towards the Confederate traitors and the efforts to keep slavery in place has occurred.

  9. The free speech thing trips off his tongue but it’s only ok for the confederacy no Black Lives Matter

  10. If only Republicans would realize that if folks had worn masks and maintained their distance starting in March, things wouldn’t be so bad now.   Gotta start some day, folks.  The sooner you do, the faster the numbers will go down and the economy will get better.    They are either too dumb or too stubborn to breathe.

  11. Freedom of speech is paramount, except in the case of people who work(ed) for trump, or are named Fauci or Mary.

100 years ago this town banned masks, ‘cept for kids on Halloween. I think the ordinance was meant to keep kkk terrorists from being anonymous.

  12. wapo:

In an interview Wednesday with The Washington Post, Mary Trump said she blames “almost 100 percent” her grandfather, Fred Trump — the family patriarch whom she describes as a “sociopath” in her 214-page memoir of sorts — for creating the conditions that led to Trump’s rise and, ultimately, what she views as his dangerous presidency.
Much like in her extended family, Mary Trump said, a similar dynamic is now playing out on the national stage, with Trump simultaneously possessing “an unerring instinct for finding people who are weaker than he is,” while also being “eminently usable by people who are stronger and savvier than he is” and eager to exploit him.
    […]
Assessing the current moment, in which Trump has amplified racism and stoked the flames of white grievance and resentment, Mary Trump said that the president is “clearly racist,” but that his behavior stems from a combination of upbringing and political cynicism.
“It comes easily to him and he thinks it’s going to score him points with the only people who are continuing to support him,” she said.
Mary Trump said that growing up in her family, her experience was one of “a knee-jerk anti-Semitism, a knee-jerk racism.”
“Growing up, it was sort of normal to hear them use the n-word or use anti-Semitic expressions,” she said.

  13. another very odd but fascinating take on the Rump

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/the-weird-masculinity-of-donald-trump/2020/07/15/0dfe3854-c43e-11ea-b037-f9711f89ee46_story.html

for example, this excerpt starts it off:
Nobody cares what Roseanne Barr thinks, generally, but a few weeks ago, a one-minute video circulated online that seemed even more bizarre than her usual bizarre: “Hear me when I say this,” she told her phone’s camera as she paced around a hotel suite. “Trump is, in my opinion, the first woman president of the United States.”

  14. Received an email from Powell’s Books that truly hit me.  I’ve shopped there regularly but even with their PPP loans going to their employees, health Insurance and smaller outlying stores, the bills for the main Portland store are going unpaid at present.  The stores are closed but they can do drive by pick up and on line.

Amazon will survive.  Whenever and wherever you can, support your local independent bricks and mortar book stores.

    Why Independence Matters

Think about the last good book you read. Did it make you feel more connected to others? Maybe it served as a welcome escape. Maybe it helped you rediscover the beauty in life. Did it surprise you?

As an independent bookstore, we strive to offer the same variety and richness of experience as the books on our shelves. And because the only people we’re beholden to are our customers and ourselves, we can focus on what really matters — promoting diverse perspectives, upholding the free exchange of ideas, championing the enduring power of books, and bolstering the great community of readers and authors we’re lucky to be a part of.

Thank you for supporting these lofty goals. Your choice sustains a family business, and allows us to follow our passion for getting the right books into the right hands, 365 days a year.

  15. Jamie…  I did pre-order Mary Trump’s book on Amazon.  But after thinking about it, I cancelled that order and ordered it from a local independent bookstore.  I got the book on the day it came out.  I’d still be waiting for that Amazon order.

  16. Bink

I wish I could cheer you up, but I may be in need of cheering services myself.  I will make the joyful possibility of Biden winning, but how he and Congress will be able to undo the damage Trump has done will be a gargantuan task.  The repair job with our allies alone will be major and that will be assuming we are coming out from under the virus effects.  It would be nice if Canada allowed Americans into their country again.

  17. My cousin in California went to the ER.  Couldn’t breathe, dizzy, tingling hands and feet.  They sent her home!  Pains in her chest.  Told her to see a cardiologist if it keeps up.  She has been in contact with someone who has COVID!

  18. Misrepresentative steve watkins (r-KS) faces a bouquet of felony counts on his way to his re-election primary : Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay filed multiple felony counts against Watkins: interference with law enforcement; providing false information; voting without being qualified; and unlawful advance voting. Watkins was also charged with a misdemeanor for failing to tell the Department of Motor Vehicles about a change of address.

  19. Rupert Murdoch’s Son James and His Wife Donate $1.23 Million to Biden Campaign

Rupert Murdoch’s son James Murdoch reportedly donated $615,000 to the Biden Victory Fund last month.
According to New York Times reporter Kenneth P. Vogel, who cited the Federal Election Commission (FEC) receipts, James Murdoch and his wife Kathryn Murdoch donated $615,000 each to the fund supporting former Vice President Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential election campaign

  20. But, how much have the murdochs given to the dishonest crazed racist and russophiliac rapist ?

I mean, besides making him a ‘real’ contender in 2016 ?

  21. Florida is just scary! This governor has blood on his hands. Ashley works at the Ocean Deck in Daytona Beach and they shut down as employees have COVID. Its been a nightmare trying to get unemployment for her here. Michigan was a dream compared to here. Craig, you know Norwwoods its been shut down for COVID as well but back up and running at 50%. Aunt Catfish too. Restaurants are death zones. I feel for the workers, no choice. Like Ashley, if you don’t go back you lose unemployment. I’m thankful she’s getting educated :0)

  22. So here we are dealing with interstate virus transmission. In by God during the summer people go to “the Beach”, which is Myrtle Beach. Great idea, right?  Horry County SC. You want it? They got it. I think we’re up to 23 counties now who can trace Covid cases back to a visit to Myrtle Beach. As much as I love going to the beach, that’s not a place I particularly like, and what with all of the “challenges“ I sure as hell wouldn’t go there this summer.
