  1. Twitter suspends Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene for covid-19 misinformation – The Washington Post

    Twitter temporarily suspended Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) for violating its covid-19 misinformation policy after she falsely claimed that the coronavirus was “not dangerous” for some people.
    A Twitter spokesperson confirmed Monday evening that the company had taken “enforcement action” on Greene’s personal account for violations of its policies.
    The account was put on “read-only” mode for 12 hours, which according to Twitter’s rules happens “if it seems like an otherwise healthy account is in the middle of an abusive episode.” The 12-hour suspension is the shortest of Twitter’s read-only penalties, which its website says can range from 12 hours to seven days, “depending on the nature of the violation.” Greene’s account had violated the misinformation policy multiple times, according to Twitter.
    Greene tweeted Monday that the novel coronavirus was “not dangerous for non-obese people and those under 65.” More than 600,000 people in the United States have died of covid-19.
    She also made claims about vaccine-related deaths and side effects, calling the coronavirus vaccines “controversial.”
    In another tweet, Greene falsely claimed that “defeating obesity” would protect people from covid-19 complications and death.
    Twitter added a warning to both tweets, labeling them as “misleading.”

    Fox News host Sean Hannity on Monday made an appeal for viewers to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
    “Please take COVID seriously, I can’t say it enough. Enough people have died. We don’t need any more deaths,” Hannity said on his primetime series. “Research like crazy, talk to your doctor, your doctors, medical professionals you trust based on your unique medical history, your current medical condition, and you and your doctor make a very important decision for your own safety. Take it seriously.”
    Hannity also stressed the importance of “medical privacy” and “doctor-patient confidentiality.”
    “I believe in science, I believe in the science of vaccination,” he added.
    Fox News figures have come under immense criticism recently over comments about coronavirus-related restrictions, lockdowns, mask mandates, vaccines and the pandemic overall.
    Fellow Fox New hosts Steve Doocy and Bill Hemmer also made statements in support of vaccinations on Monday.

    And, yes, it is the government’s job to mandate masks, and, get vaccinated or stay home orders. It’s called promoting “the general welfare.”

    You would think that Republicans would at least care about getting us through this for the sake of the economy. Ah, but Orange Adolf and the GQP have infected the Republican Party. The cure for that is sunlight and courage.

  12. Rep Greene got the Twitter shot across the bow with the twelve hour time out.  Expect her to be shut down if not banned sometime soon. She cannot get a venue to spread hate in California, and now she is quieted on Twitter.  It is something, maybe not major, but a start.

Just watched the Bezos flight – that was quick.  Still, one more step toward private space flight.  So all the billionaire space race crap aside, with today’s GQP there isn’t going to be much left of NASA to do whatever it is that people do in space to keep our communication, weather, etc. satellites operating.
     
    And the first of the insurrectionists sentenced got 8 months for a felony, and token restitution?  somehow it doesn’t seem like justice was done – In WV the sentence fo r3rd offence DUI is 2-5 years and I know of shoplifters who got 3 years.

Pogo – so far the billionaires have not had a crash and burn with humans inside.  They have had to write off a few rockets and capsules, but they have been lucky.  There comes a point in the profits race that corners get cut and things get dicey.  For the NASA astronauts it was the lowest bidder issue and politics.

After Paul alleged that Fauci lied to Congress, the doctor told Paul he didn’t know what he was talking about.
    Paul, R-Ky., asked Fauci if he would like to retract that statement from the May 11 testimony, “Fauci, as you are aware it is a crime to lie to Congress.” Fauci, who oversees several NIH research programs as director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said he wouldn’t retract his previous statement. “I have not lied before Congress. I have never lied. Certainly not before Congress. Case closed,” Fauci said.

  26. Yep, OM, the only thing dumber than that is a box of rocks.  Not sure where Rand falls on that continuum – hammers are tools, therefore there’s a purposefully beneficial use for them that was their raison d’etre.  Rocks are rocks.
     
    I heard that Fauci-Paul exchange while I was out running around at lunch.  IMHO Fauci was busy eating Rand’s lunch.

    Scientists who study glacier ice have found viruses nearly 15,000 years old in two ice samples taken from the Tibetan Plateau in China. Most of those viruses, which survived because they had remained frozen, are unlike any viruses that have been cataloged to date.

    The findings, published today in the journal Microbiome, could help scientists understand how viruses have evolved over centuries. For this study, the scientists also created a new, ultra-clean method of analyzing microbes and viruses in ice without contaminating it.
    “These glaciers were formed gradually, and along with dust and gasses, many, many viruses were also deposited in that ice,” said Zhi-Ping Zhong, lead author of the study and a researcher at The Ohio State University Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center who also focuses on microbiology. “The glaciers in western China are not well-studied, and our goal is to use this information to reflect past environments. And viruses are a part of those environments.”

  34. Yes, FOX is death television. I will never understand. All of my FOX watching Republican clients are vaccinated. Yet they tell me we shouldn’t force people to vaccinate??? Did they feel that way about vaccinating their children, I think not! FOX is propaganda. I don’t do cable but Twitter gives just enough of a sense of what’s really going on.

    To grow up in the American West in the 20th century was to swing between inferiority and hubris.

    Our history books taught us that all great and elevated events happened back east. We should go there someday and study the monuments. At the same time, there was a sense — an understanding, as it turned out — that the East might be the past but the West was the future. We had the energy. Our restlessness would be transformative. We had the breathtaking real estate and the vivid weather: mountains to climb up and ski down, beaches to bask on and everywhere cerulean skies. Our ornery libertarian pragmatism would alter American politics.

    The Achilles’ heel, the hard ceiling on Western ambitions, was water, and everyone knew it.

    From the earliest days, Western wisdom held that “whiskey is for drinking, but water is for fighting over.” Water wars erupted almost as soon as the settlers began occupying tribal lands. Water was the golden ticket, the key to prosperity. But unlike in the East, where reliable rivers just kept rolling, Western water was fickle. It roared and rampaged in certain seasons, and dried up entirely in others.

    Everything came down to regular, dependable supply: who had it, who didn’t. All the Western miracles dangled on the question of water. Epics of engineering such as the Hoover Dam and the Los Angeles aqueducts. Vaulting visions such as modern Phoenix and Las Vegas. Miracles of agriculture such as the Central Valley of California.

    Everyone knew deep down that the taming, steering and storing of water could go only so far before there was no longer enough to go around.

    That’s where we are now.

    Virtually the entire West is tapped out. Extreme drought conditions prevail in all or parts of at least seven states. Wildfires are epidemic. Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States, is drying up, with less water in it than at any time since its creation in the 1930s.

    The implications are staggering. An estimated 25 million people, plus their businesses and farms, rely on water from Lake Mead, fed primarily by the Colorado River. Moreover, many of them rely on power from the Hoover Dam, where reservoir water drives the generators. The dam’s performance is now severely threatened by the falling water supply.

    No easy fixes and nowhere to turn to fix it quickly.  Anybody got a bottle of water to spare?

    And, if i understand correctly, Bezos’ rocket should be clean – Liquid Hydrogen and Oxygen. Hmmm, take 2 of one and one of the other and whatcha got? Oh wait, I know. Water.

    The entire Colorado Compact is based on a really wet set of years, as a baseline. 
     
    Another water problem , the State of Utah diverts so much water  now from flowing into the Great Salt Lake , it is crashing along with all the other western bodies of water. 
    But when that happens , huge stretches of lake bed are exposed  to the wind , and that is not “beach sand” .
    Their are a lot of Mormons  that will be breathing a buffet of things that don’t play well in your lungs .
     We’ve already seen this when LA took all the water out of the Owens valley.  And Mono Lake started blowing. 
    That was bad. , but not a lot of people  were exposed to it.
    Utah  is a whole other ball of wax.  That valley has had some of the worst air in American for decades.  It’s the geography  of the place. 
    They are in deep doo doo. 
    They burn through water too.  Some of the great users of water in the West.

    In the early 19th century  , mammoth bones were being dug up , from that there grew-up this idea that  elephants could still be found out west. 
    This was a real scientific question for Lewis and Clark in 1804.
    Would they see elephants ?
    By the time of the Gold Rush , this idea was fading .
    And when all those men formed , and left the East for the gold fields. 
    This became the answer –
    Where’s Mr. Perkins ? 
    “He went West to see the Elephant”. 
     
    It’s wonderful term that explains  so much of our past. 
    I went West to see the Elephant  as well , and I got an eye full.
