    “In Trump’s Washington, Tucker Carlson is a primary supersecret source,” the media writer and Trump chronicler Michael Wolff writes in hisforthcomingcollection of essays, “Too Famous.” Mr. Wolff, who thanked Mr. Carlson in the acknowledgments of his 2018 book, “Fire and Fury,” explained, “I know this because I know what he has told me, and I can track his exquisite, too-good-not-to-be-true gossip through unsourced reports and as it often emerges into accepted wisdom.”
    Mr. Carlson was particularly well positioned to be a source about the Trump administration. His Fox platform, where in May he had a nightly average of three million viewers, made him someone who mattered to Mr. Trump, a close follower of television ratings. He has a former reporter’s eye for detail and anecdote, and his observations can be detected in the lurid tales of Mr. Trump’s chaotic court and Fox’s own tumultuous internal politics.
    A coming book by the Wall Street Journal reporter Michael Bender, “Frankly, We Did Win This Election: The Inside Story of How Trump Lost,” includes a moment in which Mr. Carlson sends Mr. Trump’s calls to voice mail after the first presidential debate last fall, when he was criticized for repeatedly interrupting Joe Biden. When Mr. Trump finally reaches the Fox host, the book describes, verbatim, an exchange between the two men that casts Mr. Carlson in a flattering light. (“Everyone says I did a good job,” Mr. Trump tells Mr. Carlson. “I don’t know who told you that was good,” Mr. Carlson says. “It was not good.”) Mr. Bender declined to comment on the sourcing that allowed him to so precisely reconstruct a conversation only two people were privy to.
    And Brian Stelter, the host of the CNN program “Reliable Sources,” told me that “you can see Tucker’s fingerprints all over the hardcover” edition of his 2020 book “Hoax,” which excoriates Fox News for amplifying Mr. Trump’s falsehoods. He said that he “couldn’t stomach” talking to Mr. Carlson, who has grown ever more hard-line, for the updated paperback version that was just released.

    When I asked Mr. Carlson last week about his reputation as a source of gossip and insight into the Trump administration, he dismissed the notion.
    “I don’t know any gossip. I live in a town of 100 people,” he texted, referring to his remote Maine life.
    But Mr. Wolff writes in his forthcoming essay that Mr. Carlson’s ubiquity as a source during the Trump years meant there was a downside to repeating his yarns.
    “Too many times to count, after someone’s confidence, I’ve asked, ‘Did that come from Tucker?’” Mr. Wolff writes. “And equally, after I’ve shared a juicy detail, I’ve been caught out myself: ‘So … you’ve been speaking to Tucker.’”

  9. Poobah, Father’s Day is a different experience in the first year or two.  Until I couldn’t get it started about 3 years ago I would take Dad’s motorcycle out for a couple hour ride on FD.  I always felt it was what he’d want to be doing if he was still around.

    Tucker … sigh. 

    So anyway, LP got me Clapton’s autobiography for Father’s Day. Kid definitely knows me. He hasn’t read it so when I finish it we’re going to swap and he’ll send me SRV’s biography, which is his coffee table book.

Miserable guy?  How would he idealize that?  Nothing he’s written in this book idealizes anything about his life so far.  It’s really more of a memoir.  He’s been through plenty of miserable phases – illegitimate kid raised by grandparents who pretended to be his parents and pretended his mom was his sister, an addict, a father who had to identify his son who fell 49 stories to his death – who goes through that sort of stuff who hasn’t had miserable phases.  So far the book is about his early life and musical development – I’m up to Blind Faith right now.  So far it’s not a deep dive into his personal and drug/alcohol issues.  That’s later in the book, and if it’s treated like he’s treated his early life and early career, it won’t be idealized. 

    Just curious – why would you say he’s a rather miserable guy?

    Putin’s plot paid off in spades, when Tucker Carlson played the clip of his comments to NBC on his show and expressed agreement. Carlson said: “Now, under normal circumstances, we would never play tape of a foreign adversary criticizing our government. But honestly, those are fair questions.”
    Without a hint of irony, Carlson added: “Vladimir Putin knows authoritarian systems very well, and he sees clearly what is happening in this country.” The Fox News host seemed to assume that an authoritarian adversary was providing this advice without an ulterior motive—and eagerly shared it with his American audience.
    His decision was cheered by pro-Kremlin propagandists in Moscow.
    During his nightly show, The Evening with Vladimir Soloviev, host Vladimir Soloviev proudly surmised: “Putin knew whom he was talking to and his message was heard. This is Fox News and its very popular program—one of its highest-rated programs. Republicans listened and couldn’t help but agree… Putin was heard and what he said hit the bullseye.”

  15. I thought his last tour would be his last. He was suffering from nerve issues in his left arm and of the 3 guitarists on stage that night, he was 2nd best (to Gary Clerk Jr.). Recall the name of that ducumentary? I’d like to find it and watch it.

  17. I usually avoid the subject of old Clap-tone, cause I’m not and have never been much of a “fan”. I also don’t really have any kind of beef against the man, he’s just there. I must say that his solo on the gently weeping guitar is purely beautiful, but that’s about the size of it. So-called guitar heroes have never been my thing, I see the guitar as mainly an integral part of a rhythm section, like the most excellents Steve Cropper, George Harrison, Robbie Robertson, etc
    Jerry Reed, Roy Clark, Glen Campbell, Chet Atkins being suitable guitar heroes for me. And Vince Gill, I think, ain’t no slouch either. And Les Paul. Not to mention Sister Rosetta Tharp and Barbara Lynn.

  18. Clapton is the reason i picked up a guitar, which is why it’s depressing that he was in such a bad way when he made the music I loved (and that he’s kind of a dolt).  The old art/artist quandary🤔

Can’t swing a cat without hitting a damn guitar player.  My funnest musical band endeavor was the tuxedo band at the Cavallaro Restaurant……Bass, sax, Drums, piano/synthesizer.   We had ‘em rollin’ in the aisles.   It was so packed they couldn’t clap side to side, they had to clap up and down….they couldn’t laugh “ha ha ha” they had to laugh “ho ho ho”.

I’ve got the A Life in 12 Bars album but not sure whether I’ve seen the film.  I saw a documentary about the time it was released but I’d have to see some of it to confirm that’s the one I saw, but probably is.  The one I saw had Bobby Whitlock as one of the main contributors and his part focused on the Derek & the Dominos and Delaney and Bonnie periods. I’d have to see that part to see if it’s that. If I didn’t listen to music because the artist was on drugs or alcohol when the music I love was made or was just a prick naturally, I’d have a much smaller selection to listen to.  
     
    Sturg, I hear ya, and While My Guitar Gently Weeps has to be one of his defining works .  According to his autobio after working on it in the studio for part of a day it was recorded in one take. And you’ve laid out a list of a buncha great ones.

  22. My dad is a musician, so there were always guitars around.  I started playing when I was 12, but infrequently with 2-5 year breaks…so, I’ve been playing for about 6 months.  It always hurt my fingers and the only cure for that is practice/calluses.

  25. This feller – some guy named B.B.King – (and damn do I love him), had this to say about Eric  – “I’ve been around the world. I’ve played 90 different countries around the world. And I’ve met many people. Kings and Queens. But, I’ve never met a better man, a more gracious man, than my friend, and I like to call him my friend, Eric Clapton.”   I was fortunate enough to see BB 3 or 4 times, and the last time was his last tour, and LP got to see him as well.  He was captivated.
