The United States has a long and complex history with guns dating all the way back to colonial times. There is continuous debate surrounding the rights to gun ownership and what regulations should or should not be implemented. Ratified in 1791, The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, guarantees the right to keep and bear arms. While gun laws vary by state Florida has a long history of relatively relaxed gun regulations.
On Monday April 3, 2023, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 543 into law. This bill, strengthening the second amendment, eliminates the requirement that an individual obtain a permit to carry a concealed firearm in Florida. Beginning July 1, 2023 permitless concealed carry for lawfully owned weapons will become legal.
It is noteworthy that Florida’s concealed weapons permit program has been successful and well respected. The last time we knew, no person who had ever received a concealed weapons carry permit had ever been convicted of a crime relating to the use of weapons. The permit was fairly easy to receive – it consisted of roughly four hours of classroom time, firearm instruction time, and passing a reasonable test. The vast majority of the people who have taken the course have said that it was more than worthwhile. It is unfortunate that fewer people will take the course now and more people carrying concealed guns will have no training whatsoever.
FIRST ON FOX: The super PAC backing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for president in 2024 dropped a new ad going after former President Trump with the two prominent Republicans slated to speak at the National Rifle Association (NRA) leadership forum in Indianapolis.
DeSantis and Trump are both set to speak at the NRA-ILA Leadership Forum Friday in a potential showcase of 2024 GOP candidates. DeSantis has not officially announced a bid for president yet.
Ahead of the forum, Never Back Down, the super PAC backing DeSantis as a potential 2024 GOP candidate, dropped an ad around the forum and will be handing out flyers with similar messaging.
[…]
The flyers that will be handed out by Never Back Down say Trump agreed “with Joe Biden on Red Flag Laws,” attacked “the NRA and sided with Michael Bloomberg,” agreed with “Kamala Harris on banning bump stocks” and sided “with Liberals on their gun control wish list.”
“Trump the gun grabber doesn’t deserve a second chance,” the flyer states.

The NRA is a scourge upon our nation. Â Those that spoke there do not not support democracy; they misuse it the way the do the Bible. Â

“Similarly, FDA’s assertion that the district court’s injunction will harm pregnant women or other members of the public does not speak to the irreparable injury factor (although it may speak to other factors), because those persons are not stay applicants in this case.”
— from Wednesday’s ruling by a federal appeals court panel on whether to stay U.S. District Judge Matthew J. Kacsmaryk’s overturning FDA approval of a drug used in more than half of all abortions in the United States.
Oh, good. I was just thinking: I have too many rights. We’ve got to cull, cull, cull! Do I really need to be voting and controlling my own body? That feels like much too much. Also, it’s spring! What better time to go through all the rights and see which ones spark joy and which ones don’t (uncensored proximity to books, bodily autonomy). Just like they’re doing in Florida! Constitution? Please! If we were all meant to be covered by it, we would have been explicitly included!
Isn’t all this rights nonsense getting in the way of more important things, like the ability of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit to consider exciting hypotheticals not borne out by science: What if a drug that has been proven safe for decades … weren’t? Plus, millions of Americans have been given the gift of learning the name Matthew J. Kacsmary, most often used in the sentence, “Wait, Judge Kacsmaryk can undo the FDA approval of a drug used safely by millions for 20-plus years just … because?” It was good that the 5th Circuit did not need to think about the people most impacted by the decision to overturn Food and Drug Administration approval. After all, we’re not really people! If we were supposed to be people, we wouldn’t have uteruses.
Clearly, I have been addled by having too many rights, too much autonomy. All the voting had gone to my head. I see that now.
[…]
Do I really need to be considered in cases that determine my ability to access medical care? No! It’s good that I am invisible to the people making this decision! Being invisible sounds nifty. Now I, too, can go into people’s homes and slap prescriptions out of their hands! I can get between them and their doctors without warning!
It is good that the impact on folks who are not the disgruntled doctors bringing this lawsuit is being cast aside like so much chaff. The last thing a court making a decision that could impact people capable of becoming pregnant should have to do is treat us like we’re relevant to the case. Because are we, really? Without the full protection of the law, I feel lighter already!
They say that with great power comes great responsibility. Well, it is good to know that I don’t have as many responsibilities as I thought I did! I say, laughing, through clenched teeth. Ha, ha, ha!
(I’m not sure how to feel about the fact that it’s Samuel Alito who, temporarily at least, restored my rights!)
Naively, I had thought this sort of thing could not happen because I was an individual with rights. But it turns out that judges can decide not to care about such things! The way they say there are laws and precedents that courts were bound to respect, I thought that meant people could not simply yank away rights in the night like a recalcitrant blanket, without regard to the evidence or impact. Then again, I am not a stay applicant in this case. What do I know?
I watched a bunch of the NRA convention yesterday. Still bugs me they got away with laundering Russian money for Trump. Another case of Mueller dropping the ball after investigating it. He did convict that Russian woman who was the conduit, but only for not declaring as a foreign agent. Of course the Trump DOJ wasn’t about to pursue it further. NRA gave $12 million to his 2016 campaign.

Okay, strange things going on. I just spotted a brief, six seconds, ad on YouTube that maybe the start of a new trend. It was for something like dip or potato chips, I am not sure as I tend to not watch or listen to the ads. What I spotted out of the corner of my eye were clothes, hair styles men and women, and colors straight from the late Seventies or early Eighties. The actors were doing acting things so it was not a photograph. I am hoping to see it again just to prove my guess about the age of the scene was wrong.Â
What is next? Plop, plop, fiz, fiz oh what a relief it is?
If there is a trail for money laundering, shouldn’t someone write a book about it, or do a podcast, or…I guess the Lincoln Project will have plenty other dirt on the GQP.Â
Fished a crawdad out if the pool (probably dropped by a bird) – I came swimming toward me with its claws out – it clamped onto the rope from the life preserver and off into the lawn it went. Â Yesterday, it was spiders. Â

speaking of the senator from ioway
When a cow decides to stop nursing her calf, she isn’t rejecting it. She knows it’s time for the calf to be on its own. Although the calf might feel rejected and puzzled at first, it soon adapts to its new independence and freedom. When we feel rejected, it’s useful to remember that whatever has caused us to feel this way might have nothing to do with us. It might be a reflection of what’s happening with someone else, or just the end of a natural stage in life, as with the calf. When we understand that others’ actions toward us come from their own feelings, and that we don’t cause their feelings any more than they control ours, we can free ourselves from a little bit of fear and self-hate. We can see what seems to be rejection as an open door, with our freedom on the other side. What rejections have set me free?

“True Grit” doesn’t end with a sunset ride but with what’s left of the Wild West going gray and getting stiff in a travelling museum. Mattie Ross lives long enough to find Jesse James’s brother sipping Coca-Colas with Cole Younger in a Pullman car, the pair waiting to stage a vaudeville show in the stadium of the Memphis Chicks, a minor-league baseball team.Â
I have had enough of the week. The rest of the evening will be spent watching YouTube ingrown toe nail repair, rebuilding something in France/Portugal/nowhere, animals eating or sleeping and such. Yes, I have ingrown toe nails and it is relieving to see others going through the pain of repair, removal, and destruction. Be very happy if you do not have this little thing.
