Kavanaugh’s ‘choir boy’ image on Fox interview rankles former Yale classmates

    […]
Liz Swisher, who described herself as a friend of Kavanaugh in college, said she was shocked that — in an interview focused largely on his high school years and allegations of sexual misconduct — he strongly denied drinking to the point of blacking out.

“Brett was a sloppy drunk, and I know because I drank with him. I watched him drink more than a lot of people. He’d end up slurring his words, stumbling,” said Swisher, a Democrat and chief of the gynecologic oncology division at the University of Washington School of Medicine. “There’s no medical way I can say that he was blacked out. . . . But it’s not credible for him to say that he has had no memory lapses in the nights that he drank to excess.”
Lynne Brookes, who like Swisher was a college roommate of one of the two women now accusing Kavanaugh of misconduct, said the nominee’s comments on Fox did not match the classmate she remembered.

“He’s trying to paint himself as some kind of choir boy,” said Brookes, a Republican and former pharmaceutical executive who recalled an encounter with a drunken Kavanaugh at a fraternity event. “You can’t lie your way onto the Supreme Court, and with that statement out, he’s gone too far. It’s about the integrity of that institution.”

  2. Today’s Morning Alarm:

Already the fastest-growing major government expense, the cost of interest is on track to hit $390 billion next year, nearly 50 percent more than in 2017, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

  3. Hi Y’all.  Back from North Carolina and another disaster.  Always hope you and your home are not in a disaster.  The good people in N.C. deserve a break from hurricanes.  Many of the people had just recovered from Hurricane Matthew, 2016, when Hurricane Flo arrived.  A lot of flooding damage occurred and is occurring right now.  I am tired and ready to spend a day relaxing before going back to work.

It was nice to spend almost two and a half weeks with minimal news from the outside world.

  4. Trump now says this was a joke meant to get a laugh at UN (but his rally crowds buy it): “In less than two years, my administration has accomplished more than any administration in the history of our country.”

  5. Wow, Lyft has a register to vote ad AND they are offering 50% off rides to the polls on Election Day…AND FREE rides for under-served communities that “face significant obstacles to transportation.”

  6. BlueBronc…  good to see you back.  I was thinking of you yesterday and wondering what kind of trials and tribulations you were going through down south.

Craig… good news on the potential of Florida going blue!

  7. Wow. Turned on the Republican light MSNBC Morning Joe a few minutes ago.  Looks like SFB got a glimpse of how the world views him, a funny buffoon.  Hilarious.  I go away for a couple of weeks and what I return to is a world just as stinky as what I left.  I did have hopes.

I do miss the Democratic MSNBC.  What it is now is a bunch of Republicans of old and former Republicans who could not admit they like what the Dems do so they go Independent, talking away.  Oh well. It is better than watching faux news.

New polls finds Nelson with sizable lead on Scott

MIAMI – After months of polls showing a virtual dead heat, Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson has opened up a sizable 7-point lead on Gov. Rick Scott in a new survey released Tuesday by Quinnipiac University.
Conducted Thursday through Monday, the poll found 53 percent of likely voters backed Nelson while 46 percent favored Scott in one of the most closely watched Senate races in the country. The last poll of the Florida Senate race by Quinnipiac University released on Sept. 5 found the candidates were deadlocked — each garnering 49 percent of the vote.
Another poll released Tuesday from NBC News and Marist shows Nelson with a 3-percentage point lead among likely voters. Nelson’s lead jumped to 5 percentage points among all voters.
Most previous polls, including a Reuters/Ipsos/University of Virginia Center for Politics survey conducted last week, showed the race basically tied.
However, in recent weeks, protesters have dogged Scott at campaign events, criticizing his handling of environmental issues in the state. This summer, a red tide algae bloom has wreaked havoc on the state’s west coast, killing thousands of fish and befouling beaches. The protesters fault Scott for not doing enough to protect Florida’s coasts and waterways from pollution, particularly from the sugar industry.
Meanwhile, questions have been raised about Scott’s finances. Before he was elected governor, Scott was a wealthy business executive. News reports have suggested that Scott may have obscured the extent of his wealth and his investments.
For his part, Nelson has increased his visibly among voters, airing more campaign ads across Florida.

  9. I’ve taken to spraying flies with insect repellent……doesn’t kill them, but when they go to hang out with the other flies they’re shunned.

  10. Nelson is killing Scott among independents in these polls, mid-to-high double digits. But that’s a fickle bunch, can flit away for any reason. Will say Nelson is one of the most careful (to a fault?) politicians I know, very low risk for a poll-shifting gaffe. He’s of the Bob Graham mold for winning in Florida: He offends no one.

  11. One thing I’d like to see is the face of the “special assistant” Lord High Questioner when she realizes the gig is off, or at least severely askew.

  12. Voters are often not willing to send their governors to Washington as their senators. It is a strange disconnect that I have never been able to figure out. In the case of Florida I hope this holds true Rick Scott should have no place in the United States senate

  13. Special Assistant: Is there a back door to this chamber?

    Senator:  No, there isn’t .

Special Assisstant: Well, where do you WANT one??

  14. Jace, the only explanation I can imagine is that they would rather risk losing more seats in the midterms and pack the court with another right winger. Otherwise, it just makes no sense to plow on.

  15. Craig

they can tell voters that they confirmed one justice and in so doing may well have squandered their ability to confirm any more.

    Strange logic to be sure

I, JULIE SWETNICK, declare as follows:

    1. My name is Julie Swetnick and I am a resident of Washington, DC. I fully
understand the seriousness of the statements contained within this declaration. I have
personal knowledge of the information stated herein and if called to testify to the same
    would and could do so.

    2. I am a graduate of Gaithersburg High School in Gaithersburg, MD.

    3. I presently hold the following active clearances associated-with working
Within the federal government: Public Trust – US. Department of Treasury (DOT), US.
Mint (USM), Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

    4. I have also previously held the following inactive clearances: Secret US.
Department of State (DOS), US. Department of Justice (DOJ) and Public Trust – US.
Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

    5. My prior employment includes working with Vietnam War
Commemoration (VWC), Joint Services Providers (J SP), US. Department of Defense
(DOD) in Arlington, Virginia; US Mint, US. Department of Treasury; U.S.
Internal Revenue Service (IRS), US. Department of Treasury; Government Affairs
and Communications Department, DC. Department of General Services (DGS),
Government of the District of Columbia Customs and Border Protection
(CBP), US. Department of Homeland Security; and the US. Department of State
(DOS). I was also one of the ?rst 100 women in the world to achieve a Microsoft
    Certi?ed Systems Engineering Certification (MCSE).

    6. I first met Mark Judge and Brett Kavanaugh in approximately 1980-1981. I
was introduced to them at a house party that I attended in the Washington, DC. area. I
observed Mark Judge and Brett Kavanaugh as extremely close friends during the early
19803 when I knew them and interacted with them. I would describe them as ?joined at
the hip? and I consistently saw them together in many social settings. There is no
question in my mind that Mark Judge has significant information concerning the conduct

  17. Brett Kavanaugh during the 1980s, especially as it relates to his actions toward
    women.

    7. Following that ?rst introduction, I attended well over ten house parties in the
Washington, DC. area during the years 1981-1983 where Mark Judge and Brett
Kavanaugh were present. These parties were a common occurrence in the area and
occurred nearly every weekend during the school year. On numerous occasions at these
parties, I witnessed Mark Judge and Brett Kavanaugh drink excessively and engage in
highly inappropriate conduct, including being overly aggressive with girls and not taking
?No? for an answer. This conduct included the fondling and grabbing of girls without
    their consent.

    8. I observed Brett Kavanaugh drink excessively at many of these parties and
engage in abusive and physically aggressive behavior toward girls, including pressing
girls against him without their consent, ?grinding? against girls, and attempting to remove
or shift girls? clothing to expose private body parts. I likewise observed him be verbally
abusive towards girls by making crude sexual comments to them that were designed to
demean, humiliate and embarrass them. I often witnessed Brett Kavanaugh speak in a
demeaning manner about girls in general as well as speci?c girls by name. I also
witnessed Brett Kavanaugh behave as a ?mean drunk? on many occasions at these
    parties. 2 i

    9. I have been told by other women that this conduct also occurred during the
Summer months in Ocean City, Maryland on numerous occasions. I also witnessed such
conduct on one occasion in Ocean City, Maryland during ?Beach Week.?

?10. I have reviewed Brett Kavanaugh?s recent claim on Fox News regarding his
alleged ?innocence? during his high school years and lack of sexual activity. This claim
is absolutely false and a lie. I witnessed Brett Kavanaugh consistently engage in

excessive drinking and inappropriate contact of a sexual nature with women during the

    early 19803.

  18. 11. During the years 1981-82, I became aware of efforts by Mark Judge, Brett
Kavanaugh and others to ?spike? the ?punch? at house parties I attended with drugs
and/or grain alcohol so as to cause girls to lose their inhibitions and their ability to say
This caused me to make an effort to purposely avoid the ?punch? at these parties.
I witnessed efforts by Mark Judge, Brett Kavanaugh and others to ?target? particular girls
so they could be taken advantage of; it was usually a girl that was especially vulnerable
because she was alone at the party or shy.

    12. I also witnessed efforts by Mark Judge, Brett Kavanaugh and others to cause
girls to become inebriated and disoriented so they could then be ?gang raped? in a side
room or bedroom by a ?train? of numerous boys. I have a firm recollection of seeing
boys lined up outside rooms at many of these parties waiting for their ?turn? with a girl
inside the room. These boys included Mark Judge and Brett Kavanaugh.

    13. In approximately 1982, I became the victim of one of these ?gang? or ?train?
rapes where Mark Judge and Brett Kavanaugh were present. Shortly after the incident, I
shared what had transpired with at least two other people. During the incident, I was
incapacitated without my consent and unable to ?ght off the boys raping me. I believe I
was drugged using Quaaludes or something similar placed in what I was drinking.

    14. I am aware of other witnesses that can attest to the truthfulness of each of the
    statements above.

I declare, under penalty of perjury and under the laws of the United States of

America, that the foregoing is true and correct. I have executed this declaration on

    September 25, 2018.

  19. Senator Kennedy -moronRepublican from the deep south

said he would treat Kavanaugh the sleaze as if he were his son

My question for the idiot senator is your son a binge drinking sexual predator?

  20. heard on MSNBC that avenatti is not willing to release the corroborating witnesses names to committee staff but only to fbi for investigation.  guess he doesn’t trust the judi staff – –  maybe suspecting them to suborn witnesses?

  21. Trump at the UN

Does he really think the American public is stupid?   Now the Whitehouse is saying he did it intentionally for a laugh.  How do they explain what actually happened – where he appears stunned that people are laughing at him.

And says, I did not expect that reaction.

He must think the American voter is dumb as a box of rocks.

  22. Drip drip drip

At some point the weight of these accusations has got to begin to tell and each passing day brings Election Day just that much closer.

This promises to be very fresh in voters minds

  23. Someone should put together an ad with all the sexual predators in the Trump administration starting with Trump or people like Roy Moore who he wanted in office. And all the goopers who have had to leave their office or jobs because of sexual misconduct – they could confine it to the last year and it would still be an enormous list.

And Kavanaugh looks creepier and creepier every day and just like Trump he thinks he can lie his way out.

People need to use every tool at their disposal to fight this nomination. One because he is a creep and probably thinks slavery is good and women’s rights bad two he is a perjurer and there is still all that unexplained change in his financial fortunes.
He doesn’t really like women and he isn’t fit to serve on any court let alone the Supreme Court

  24. He was a sloppy drunk and is an even sloppier cover up artist.Does not bode well for him.

Is that the slurping sound of  a nomination circling the drain I hear?

  25. Well…….he hasn’t tried tears yet…..or honesty……

they have him in a beautiful knight fork because he’s lied so much there’s no where to run to, baby; no where to hide.

cc called it back a ways with the “odds” post and Jennifer Rubin pegged it the other day with  he’s also liable to lose the job he already has.

You can run, but you can’t hide.

  26. time:
Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh has released the prepared testimony he plans to share at his hearing in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday — and he continues to vehemently deny any accusations of sexual misconduct.

Kavanaugh released the prepared statement on Wednesday, shortly before third accuser Julie Swetnick came forward with claims that she witnessed him “consistently engage in excessive drinking and inappropriate contact of a sexual nature with women in the early 1980s.” Kavanaugh denied the latest accusations under oath in a closed-doors Judiciary Committee hearing, according to an email seen by TIME.
    […]

Below is Kavanaugh’s full prepared written testimony:
Prepared Written Testimony of Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh Nomination Hearing to Serve as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court September 27, 2018 (submitted September 26, 2018) Mr. Chairman, Ranking Member Feinstein, and Members of the Committee: Eleven days ago, Dr. Ford publicly accused me of committing a serious wrong more than 36 years ago when we were both in high school.

I denied the allegation immediately, unequivocally, and categorically. The next day, I told this Committee that I wanted to testify as soon as possible, under oath, to clear my name.

Over the past few days, other false and uncorroborated accusations have been aired. There has been a frenzy to come up with something — anything, no matter how far-fetched or odious — that will block a vote on my nomination. These are last minute smears, pure and simple. They debase our public discourse. And the consequences extend beyond any one nomination.Such grotesque and obvious character assassination — if allowed to succeed — will dissuade competent and good people of all political persuasions from serving our country.

As I told this Committee the last time I appeared before you, a federal judge must be independent, not swayed by public or political pressure. That is the kind of judge I am and will always be. I will not be intimidated into withdrawing from this process. This effort to destroy my good name will not drive me out. The vile threats of violence against my family will not drive me out.

I am here this morning to answer these allegations and to tell the truth. And the truth is that I have never sexually assaulted anyone — not in high school, not in college, not ever. Sexual assault is horrific. It is morally wrong. It is illegal. It is contrary to my religious faith. And it contradicts the core promise of this Nation that all people are created equal and entitled to be treated with dignity and respect. Allegations of sexual assault must be taken seriously. Those who make allegations deserve to be heard. The subject of allegations also deserves to be heard. Due process is a foundation of the American rule of law.

Dr. Ford’s allegation dates back more than 36 years, to a party that she says occurred during our time in high school. I spent most of my time in high school focused on academics, sports, church, and service. But I was not perfect in those days, just as I am not perfect today. I drank beer with my friends, usually on weekends. Sometimes I had too many. In retrospect, I said and did things in high school that make me cringe now. But that’s not why we are here today. What I’ve been accused of is far more serious than juvenile misbehavior.

I never did anything remotely resembling what Dr. Ford describes. The allegation of misconduct is completely inconsistent with the rest of my life. The record of my life, from my days in grade school through the present day, shows that I have always promoted the equality and dignity of women. I categorically and unequivocally deny the allegation against me by Dr. Ford. I never had any sexual or physical encounter of any kind with Dr. Ford.

I am not questioning that Dr. Ford may have been sexually assaulted by some person in some place at some time. But I have never done that to her or to anyone. I am innocent of this charge. [Additional Testimony To Follow]

  27. The stepford wife:  you can only gaze lovingly at someone for just so long and then your face has to relax for a second as you have a stray thought, giving rise to—an honest expression.

    Great interview.

  28. the hill:
Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) ripped both President Trump and his fellow lawmakers on Wednesday for their handling of a sexual assault allegation against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

“I do not believe that a claim of sexual assault is invalid because a 15-year-old girl didn’t promptly report the assault to the authorities, as the president of the United States said just two days ago,” Flake said.

Flake questioned what sort of message Trump’s rhetoric has on young woman and how often politicians would “marginalize and ignore woman.”

“How uninformed and uncaring do you have to be to say things like that, much less believe them? Do we have any idea what kind of message that sends, especially to young women? How many times do we have to marginalize and ignore women before we learn that important lesson?” Flake asked.
     […]
Flake also took aim at how his colleagues have handled the allegation, which came amid an already deeply partisan fight over Kavanaugh’s nomination.

He said that senators have turned Kavanaugh and Ford into “unwitting combatants in an undeclared war.”

“If we cannot have a human — rather than a political — response to these witnesses, if we are heedless to the capacity that we have to do real and lasting damage, then maybe we shouldn’t be here,” Flake said.

Flake also used his speech to defend Ford and Kavanaugh against attacks being lobbed from both sides.

He said Ford wasn’t trying to “smear” Kavanaugh. Republicans, including Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), have accused Democrats of using Ford’s allegation to run a “smear campaign” against his nomination.

“What I do know is that I don’t believe that Dr. Ford is part of some kind of vast conspiracy from start to finish to smear Judge Kavanaugh, as has been alleged by some on the right,” Flake said.

“And what I do know is that I don’t believe that Judge Kavanaugh is some kind of serial sexual predator, as has been alleged by some on the left,” he continued.

Flake, during the floor speech, did not indicate how he would vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination.

“I do not know how I will assess the credibility of these witnesses — these human beings — on the grave matters that will be testified to, because I have not yet heard a word of their testimony, and because I am not psychic. I am not gifted with clairvoyance,” he said.

He added that “given these limitations, I will have to listen to the testimony before I make up my mind about the testimony.”

  30. a little more background on swetnick  from the guardian:

    […]
A spokeswoman for Gaithersburg high school confirmed that Swetnick graduated in 1980. Swetnick’s résumé said that she later studied pre-medical courses at Montgomery county community college in Germantown, Maryland, until 1985.

The document described her as an experienced IT specialist and website developer. In addition to her work for federal government agencies, it said, Swetnick has also worked for major companies including JP Morgan, Marriott and American Airlines.

Swetnick has been registered as the owner of the company International Building Solutions in Bethesda, Maryland, since 2009, according to public records.

She registered as a non-affiliated voter in Washington DC in 2014 and voted in the 2016 general election.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Robin Davis, who resigned angrily and suddenly as a Supreme Court justice after being impeached by the House of Delegates, today filed a federal lawsuit contending her constitutional rights to free expression and due process are being violated.
Her lawyers also contend “The Articles of Impeachment as filed are unsupported, invalid and do not warrant impeachment.”
Davis wants the articles to be vacated and for an injunction to bar any impeachment trial proceedings.

Since Davis resigned I’m not sure the part of her suit asking that the articles of impeachment, since she resigned, will survive. Federal courts tend to use standing to bounce suits with some regularity. But then again, the legislature voted to maintain her in the impeachment proceedings so I suppose she does indeed have standing. Never mind my previous musings.

  56. patd, lMAO when I read this from Petri’s piece:

…Brett was so complete in his purity that he once healed a junior’s hangover with merely a touch of his hand. On the single occasion he attended a party, Brett turned the keg to water and gave everyone fish-and-loaf snacks.
