Failing The Test

Look for yourself at the CDC website. Only Eight, yes 8, coronavirus tests done on March 10 nationwide, fewest number since January:

  1. take care, boss

    https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/487162-senate-staffer-tests-positive-for-coronavirus

A staffer in Sen. Maria Cantwell‘s D.C. office has tested positive for the coronavirus, the Washington state Democratic senator announced on Wednesday night.
The announcement marks the first known instance of a congressional staffer getting the virus and follows days of heightened anxiety on Capitol Hill.
The staffer, according to a notice from Cantwell’s office, has been isolated since they started to have symptoms. Cantwell is closing her D.C. office for the remainder of the week for a deep cleaning.

  2. All, tyvm. Starting the prep process. Listening to the way the market class received SFB assurance last night. They had the same reaction I did – he has no idea what he’s doing. Great idea – cut Medicare funding source as the pandemic grows. Stupid prick.

  3. Can we shut down WS for 30 days?  Freeze it.  No more gambling with retirement money.

  4. well, not only the virus possibly on it’s way to my old KY home but they say today possible tornados are acomin too

    sooo

  5. From the previous thread, Jamie indicated that the NBA had cancelled the remainder of its season. Based on the news I’m seeing this morning, the announcement is still suspended and not cancelled. Evidently they will re-evaluate as the situation progresses. The season may still be cancelled, but it is just suspended at this time.
Based on current reports, NCAA basketball activity will continue with most remaining conference tournaments and the NCAA Tournament to be played in empty arenas with essential personnel and limited family in attendance. MLB spring games continue, although some schedules are being altered and there are now locker room bans in place to non-essential personnel and press. NHL games continue, although there are now rumblings of closing arenas to fans.
In international sports news, there are lots of event cancellations. I haven’t seen anything about the Olympics as of yet. The Chinese Basketball Association, suspended since January, apparently wants to resume play in April and has advised all American players with contracts in the league that they must return or face a lifetime ban from the league. It’s unclear if the report of the threatened ban is true or rumor.
    And on we go.

  6. an “atta boy” for mike.

    wapo:

Former New York mayor Mike Bloomberg, who is looking for ways to remain relevant after dropping out of the Democratic presidential race, is donating $500,000 to Voto Latino to help register young voters.
Latino Vote on Thursday said the donation would target states including Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin and aid an existing digital voter registration program.
“Four million young people who heard the president call their loved ones criminals and rapists have come of age since those terrible remarks and will be eligible to cast a vote for the very first time this November,” Maria Teresa Kumar, president and chief executive officer of Voto Latino, said in a statement. “Bloomberg’s investment allows Voto Latino to further educate, engage and empower the Latinx community to register to vote and turn out to the polls.”

  7. Imagine that—you done hit the big time, shot the guy, and screaming  your famous words while swinging down to the stage on a ripped off curtain you get tangled up and break your stupid leg.   Tough exit.

  8. wonder why, since he’s so obsessed with the market disaster due to the pandemic, IMpotus doesn’t play the magnanimous card and lift his stupid tariffs?   might help the global economic picture a tad and ours as well.

  9. In other parts of the country people may be hoarding toilet paper but in Northern California it’s Trader Joe’s dolmas

  10.
An updated chart of the testing capacity.  This time I remembered to get the guys name. The chart is compiled by Scott Gottlieb MD

Pogo, I realize on twitter both geniuses and idiots post stuff but I try to pass along stuff from folks who have some expertise. For Covid-19 stuff Josh Marshal of TPM media has put together a  twitter list of experts in the field.  Subscribing to it helps in the hunt for relevant information.
As to the numbers, as Exrep pointed out last night we are woefully short of testing capacity.

  11. As to the CDC numbers, I’m afraid they are created to make Dear Leader happy. I saw yesterday where top level meetings about the Covid-19 crises were being classified.  So what can we trust? damfino.
    Jack

  12. Hey all you asshats that voted for trump so you could get your judges…. hope you’re happy now!

  13. Well, the damn has broken. Just got an email from our Community Police officer. Per order from on high he will no longer be attending community meetings.
I think we are starting to see the problem with  a lack of leadership at the top. We are swinging from back and forth. from why worry to the world is ending. Neither extreme is accurate nor are they helpful.
    Jack

  14. Most of the remaining conference basketball tournaments have been cancelled. SEC is suspending athletics through 30 March, and then will re-evaluate. Big East Tournament continues, at least at this time.
Student athletes are speaking up, saying that they are uncomfortable continuing to play in the current environment.
NCAA still plans to play the tournament next week in empty arenas with essential personnel only, but that could change any time.
It’s a fluid situation gang. Stay tuned.

  15. What a time for the Republicans to be in charge.  Just looked up the best rate for a bank CD and for under a year they are all paying less than .9% . Which means there is way more money out there than there are ideas on how to spend it.  If there was ever a time for tax and spend economics it is now.
Get the money in the hands of those who will put it in circulation.
So lets shore up the emergency safety net.
Add a federal payment of 50$ a week to those drawing unemployment.  A tax credit of 100% for anybody paying for over 2 day/month sick leave. Increase food stamp enrollment. Housing vouchers for anyone unemployed to be paid for rent or mortgage.

  16. Local news reports there were 250 people waiting for the midtown Costco to open. And damn, I’m out of coffee.
    Jack

  17. kgc & Jamie, absolutely understandable.  meat dolmas complete meal. even the all veggie ones could keep you going during a quarantine.

  18. Just scanned yesterday’s and today’s news. Pogo, fingers crossed, should be checking in before long. I wish I had known his plans—I would have recommended the new climate-controlled replacement.

  19.   The NHL just suspended it’s season also.  Although…  I have to admit it’s kinda hard to give a damn  at this point.  As much as I LOVE sports…  it’s kinda silly to give so much weight to entertainment right now, IMO.

ps…  NO… I don’t really care what happens to Tom Brady either.

  20. Elizabeth Warren has a Coronavirus plan on elizabethwarren.com and I would feel much better if someone (you know who) would listen to her.
Declare Stanford Act- Enact 1135 waivers to temporarily amend Medicare and Medicaid -Increase monthly Medicare distributions -Stimulus package to shore up the economy  -and, much, much more
Of course, SFB would just dole out money to his fossil fuel buddies.
What happens if our military gets sick???

  21. It will be interesting g to see what’s left on store shelves this weekend, as I venture out one, last time.  I really don’t need anything, but I’m curious.   meow

  22. ”What happens if our military gets sick???“

…a lot of fights over who gets to use the restroom first.  They skew young so they’ll recover well, mostly.

Now, how to keep my dad in his apartment.  He gets bored and goes to the library, the nursing home, the senior center, the dollar store, fast food for a treat, then he walks Walmart.   He did say there were signs on some of the nursing home doors to stay out if you’re sick, but so far, he still goes over to do activities with them.

  24. here’s a plan for you: plan on contracting coronavirus, ‘cuz you’re gonna.  Don’t kill the messenger- coronavirus will take care of that for you.

  25. What if there is a massive outbreak in our military???   Would Russia take advantage?   By the way, no sickness reports from Russia after week one.  ???

  26. There is going to be, BiD.  No “what-if” about it.  They know how to deal with base-wide illnesses, they happen frequently.

…was trying not to alarm you good seniors last week, but the cat’s out of the bag, now. “Pandemic” means “pandemic”.

Oh, will Russia invade us? lol, no

  27. Rick and I went out to breakfast like we normally do on Thursdays.  Then we wondered over to our chosen grocery store and bought a few extra things.  Yeah… had to buy individual rolls of toilet paper because the multi-packs were all gone.  But we got every thing we needed.  But then decided upon coming home to buy some extra cases of cat food on chewy.  We are prepared…  but not panicked.

  28. In my more than 22-years of service I never saw a base-wide illness. By and large, we were healthier than surrounding communities. Worst scenario, we could order troops into their poopie suits and gas-masks, the field protective gear that will allow them  to fight in chemical/biological/radiological environments for extended periods of time.

  29. If you’re gonna get Covid-19, get it now while there are facilities and people to attend to ya.

Like the black plague, this will run it’s course.  In the meantime, I’m not going out much and stopping the group things I like to do. *sigh* 30% won’t get it, they say.

Since I recently had influenza B and didn’t know it and didn’t know how long I’d had it. it hits home with me how easily stuff spreads.

  30. We need an ad showing SFB telling people it is ok to go to work and other stupid thing he has said

  31. …good coverage on BBC World Service- discussing how actual responsible European governments with competent leadership are addressing the virus

  32. Blue, Goodness, what a challenge you’re experiencing with your Dad. What about  having the meanest sgt of police come to your house, sit him down and tell him, “If you don’t change your behavior during this pandemic we are going to arrest your daughter. She will be sentenced to public service work in nursing homes caring for pandemic victims some of whom you may have placed at risk. DO YOU UNDERSTAND??”

  33. abc news:

Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday the House would vote later in the day on a Democratic stimulus package to respond to the economic impact of the novel coronavirus pandemic, saying she can agree to most changes proposed by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin – the administration’s point man in negotiations.
“We’re addressing the realities of life, a family life in America, putting family first,” Pelosi, D-Calif., said. “We’re not planning a schedule or anything else, until we get that — until we get that done,” she said about any decision to possibly delay or cancel the the 10-day recess the House was scheduled to begin Thursday.
At the same time, as the Senate awaits the House bill, McConnell announced he is canceling the Senate recess period next week, although senators are returning home to their states for the weekend.

  34. …notice the rich and famous can get testing kits, but average Americans can’t.  i already know someone who was refused for testing because they “aren’t old enough”.

  35. lol, makes sense.  Who tested the NBA players?  ill investigate…

“‘As a follow-up to yesterday’s positive COVID-19 test, Oklahoma health officials tested all members of the Utah Jazz traveling party, confirming one additional positive outcome for a Jazz player,’ the Jazz said Thursday.”

Ah, so be a healthy pro-athlete, that’s how you get a test.

  36. Well I’ve had my eyes out I ain’t seen any coronavirus yet. Biggest problem I have encountered so far today is waiting for a room to open up. The surgery went well and I haven’t had any complications, and surprisingly little pain for a knee I’m told. Thanks to all for the well wishes. They are appreciated. And sturge, too late I guess. Just wore the damn thing out.

  37. Congrats, Pogo! Pain management is light-years ahead of where it was decades ago. When I had discs fused in my neck a few years ago, I was up and dancing in the hallway during the middle of that night. Give it a try! (NOT!)

  38. I certainly hope they have the windows nailed Shut on Wall Street. The way back machine now has us in June 2017 again.

  39. It’s like the week of the Oct Crash of 1987 when the market fell 20-pct on Monday and 31-pct during that week. It didn’t take long to recover. You and your missus are going to clean-up in redoing estate plans in the meantime.

  40. Now I know they think COVID is serious- Disney is closing Disneyland for the rest of the month.

  41. WTF is it with Repugs?  Now Lindsey G is self quarantined – from contact at Mar-a-lago. 😂😂😂

  42. Heck, it looks like just go to work and come straight home these days. I went to the grocery store today and they were wiping off all of the self-checkouts with anti-bacterial wipes. I was surprised because we had a tour of people from Honda where I work today.

  43. If course NASCAR goes on; SFB told his followers to go to work, even if sick.
Flatus – My dad is up in KC.  Tried taking the car keys away after a hospitalization once; my brother finally gave ‘em back.   He’s always been like this with the constant, little trips.
NPR was talking to medical personnel in UK.  The NHS has been cut back so far over the past 10 years, they don’t think they’re prepared for a huge spike.   Universal healthcare only works if you find it, I guess.   Wonder how the Danes and Swedes will fare?

  44. Financial advisor was just talking about our “flash recession” and said to increase your 401(k) contribution.

  45. March Madness is cancelled.  There’s MY silver lining. Ha!
Opening of our new baseball park has been postponed.

  46. Lindsay graham exposed himself at Mar-a-Leggo and has, as a result, become quarantined.
It’s like an old time chicken pox party down there.

  47. And now, as the sun sinks low in the west and the lights come up to an empty house which Ruth built, the players take the field.   It’s all television from here on out, Ladies and Germans.

  48. …not terribly sad that trump is encouraging his base to expose themselves to contamination and ignore medical advice

  49. My niece’s bowling tournament got canceled. Our local college was ranked #1 and in the sweet sixteen of the Division 3 tournament. That got canceled today as well.

  50. Once again America is facing one hell of a problem with an idiot in charge and in power  And so is the rest of the world.  The markets are showing that there is no confidence in the idiot in charge,  If SFB and bobble head quit to have a Dem take chargem Madam Speaker Pelosi, the world would be in a super happy stroke..

  51. The Bernie followers are pestering Warren to endorse him.   I hope she doesn’t do it.   I don’t really care for her to endorse Joe, either.   She should be President.

  52. If public schools close and parents have to work, that’s a problem.    No day care centers?    If children stay well while parents get sick or die, who cares for them?  Not everyone has family.

  53. Private labs also are testing, and more will be testing.

What’s more, the fatality rate from COVID-19 in the USA is well below the international average.

If the Democrats and Republicans did not spend all their time on impeachment, and instead focused on addressing the virus as the severity of the outbreak in China became clear – we would be in a far better position.

In the future… post ALL the data available on the CDC website – not just half the story.

  54. We have a massive failure of the alleged pro-life movement to live up to its slogan. The virus should be unmasking ‘pro-life’ organizations as nothing more than corrupt fund and vote raising shills for the criminous republican party.

  55. My best friend works at the University of Michigan. He was told today that they are to work in “remote” aka “From Home” for the next 6 weeks.

Hey, Republicans AND Democrats are to blame.  See?  i’m totally non-partisan!

    NASCAR WILL CONTINUE AS USUAL!

I sense that the national IQ is about to rise dramatically.

  59. Katie Porter, D-Ca, got something done in the House today.
    https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/12/politics/katie-porter-cdc-coronavirus-testing-white-board/index.html
She got  Dr. Robert Redfield, the head of the CDC … 42 CFR 71.30, reading aloud the statute, which states that the CDC “director may authorize payment for the care and treatment of individuals subject to medical exam(ination), quarantine, isolation and conditional release.”
“Excellent! Everybody in America hear that — you are eligible to go get tested for coronavirus and have that covered, regardless of insurance,” Porter said. “Please — if you believe you have the illness, follow precautions, call first, do everything the CDC and Dr. Fauci — God bless you for guiding Americans in this time — but do not let a lack of insurance worsen this crisis.”

  60. Just to make sure it is clear… I have said since January that the response from this administration AND the two parties in Congress was inadequate.

In mid-February I shared an article on my personal and political pages from a friend and former CIA field operative who outlined what we know and what we know is not the truth relating to the virus outbreak in China, and said we need to deal with this problem now.

People here and elsewhere can suggest whatever they want, but the fact remains – we do not have a proactive government – or leaders with foresight in EITHER PARTY! We should have moved much faster on containment. And what we have in place now is not an adequate strategy for containment, because even the so-called travel bans or suspensions are not complete. It is NEVER too late to initiate a full travel ban, and turn our attention to testing people and providing care for our most vulnerable.

No… Testing is not where it needs to be. I certainly agree with that 100%. But ramping up testing takes time. Hence, if we were proactive, we would be much farther along in getting testing available throughout the country. That said, it is absolutely not accurate to imply that only 5 tests or 8 test were conducted in the nation in one day – because there are more organizations testing than just the CDC.

It is time to stop with the political narratives and rhetoric and misleading or guided comments that are pro one side or the other, or the frequent “he is Russian agent” or “troll” bullshit, etc.

I noted as far back as January that the lack of leadership and information was only creating concern and confusion. People were hungry for information, and when the government failed to lead – people turned to every source they could and only became more misinformed. And now we are at a stage where the lives and economic welfare of many millions of people are in jeopardy – and we still have politicians playing political games instead of working for us and our welfare.

We need leadership and activity. And we need to push EVERYONE in positions of power to do what is right for us all!

  61. uh no, you’re implying “impeachment” is the reason we are experiencing a pandemic, and therefore blaming Democrats.  This ain’t twitter and we all took logic 101

  62. South Korea tests 2x the number of people in ONE DAY than we have total in 3 months, where’s that in your “accurate” reporting?  oh, nowhere cuz it doesnt fit your narrative

  63. Took Obama/Biden just 30 days to do 1 million tests after first swine flu case. It’s been 60 days and just 11, 000 tests. Can’t manage what you can’t measure.

  64. -assume everyone you know is sick already, employ “social distancing”

    -stay hydrated

-you’ve been sick before- keep nutrition around you know you can keep down

-stay in touch with a loved-one.  if you have none, email Craig

-carve out a safe-zone for yourself.  Go ahead and pick your nose in your safe-zone, just sterilize yourself when entering or leaving it.   This safe-zone becomes your self-quarantine zone if you get sick, so provide for work and entertainment within it

-fatten up, now, beach-body season is officially cancelled

-don’t tolerate jokers who make jokes about infecting everything, employ profanity if necessary

-remember you are loved, so get help if you need it

  65. Well excuse me, Mr Hackmer, but in fact the pro-active office that was designated to anticipate and co-ordinated the response to pandemics was invented by only one particular political party and eliminated by only one particular political party – the other one.

  66. Well I can only point out that the numbers for both CDC and US public health conducted tests fell dramatically over the last week reported in the graph Michael posted. That the decline in the numbers of tests followed SFB’s comments last week- Mar 6 to be exact) that he liked the numbers then. That was the last day of CDC labs tests and the first day of the PHS labs decline from 1300test to 8, 4 days later. That also followed the announcement by Pence on Mar 2 that 1 million tests were either out or available and that 8 million would be out or available within the week.
But wait,  CDC has changed it’s counting methodology and it is reported that tests peaked at 1438 and dipped into the 1100s over the weekend and were back at 1389 Monday. Those numbers are of number of tests collected, and comparing the new numbers to those MH reported, there appears to be about a 2 day lag for the numbers to hit CDC’s charts.
what inexplicable to me is why those numbers are not riding. It could be lab capacity I guess, but the message from our “leader” was clear on 3/6. He liked the numbers where they were then.
That said, the numbers of reported cases continue to rise. As of today the number is 1663 in the US. But SFB says the testing has gone ver smooth. From his perspective I’m sure it has. Fuck him.

  67. Allow me to address this in particular…

    Binksays:

uh no, you’re implying “impeachment” is the reason we are experiencing a pandemic, and therefore blaming Democrats.  This ain’t twitter and we all took logic 101

South Korea tests 2x the number of people in ONE DAY than we have total in 3 months, where’s that in your “accurate” reporting?  oh, nowhere cuz it doesnt fit your narrative

    —-
First, I was not “implying” that impeachment was the reason we are experiencing a pandemic. That is absurd. Inaction and poor prioritization is the reason why we are not as prepared as we should be.
What I was clearly articulating (and I made a similar comment in more detail in another thread on this page and elsewhere) was that if politicians put the people ahead of their power games we would be in a better position today. Would you argue with that? Do you disagree with my assessment in January that if we stopped focusing as much on impeachment, and politicians turned to focusing more on the virus outbreak in China and preparing a response that we would be in a better position today? It’s obvious we would be. It comes down to priorities.
Democrats and Republicans did not make early preparation a priority, and that harmed us. I said that the severity of the situation in China was becoming very clear in January and early February. But people on both sides were more focused on their personal political futures and fighting a battle whose outcome was determined before it began.

Look, I am not responsible for your interpretations or your bias or your obvious hatred for the President. I have consistently criticized Democrats and Republicans for their lack of foresight and action on this issue. One side is not more or less to blame than the other. But they all are responsible in different ways. What you want is for the side you like to avoid accountability, and that is weak.

As for the “narrative…” What “narrative” are you talking about? The one where I said that testing is not where it needs to be? Because that is what I wrote. I never said that United States was adequate in its response. So, address the points I make – address what I wrote – not the the words or narratives you make-up and assign to me!

I did say that the number of tests were higher than what was posted. On that point, I am 100% correct. Neither you, nor ANYONE ELSE has been able to disprove that point. Only half the story was being told. It is a popular and misleading story that appears in many places. I only sought to make that point.

I also never said that the U.S. was out-testing South Korea. That was not the point of the original post, nor the point of my response. To be clear, I do not disagree that China and South Korea have performed more tests. Of course they have! China was the source of the virus, so obviously the people closest to the problem will have completed more tests. I did say that testing was ramping up here and that takes time. We need more tests. More tests will come.

  68. ”China was the source of the virus, so obviously the people closest to the problem will have completed more tests. I did say that testing was ramping up here and that takes time. “

What a dumb statement.  Not spending my morning composing replies to all of your other silliness, although you’ve provided plenty of fodder, like how you magically know the US fatality rate when we can’t even test adequately to know the number of cases.

  69. ”China was the source of the virus, so obviously the people closest to the problem will have completed more tests. I did say that testing was ramping up here and that takes time. “ What a dumb statement.  Not spending my morning composing replies to all of your other silliness, although you’ve provided plenty of fodder, like how you magically know the US fatality rate when we can’t even test adequately to know the number of cases.

    —–

There is nothing dumb or silly about what I wrote. Nothing I wrote was untruthful. I never made any claims that we were testing enough, had enough tests or were testing more than countries that were closer to the problem and have been testing longer. I stated very clearly that we needed to do more, and the entire point of my original post was that we lacked urgency and priority from the start – and it was not until things came crashing down that we started to move faster. It absolutely is a failure in leadership. And I hold the people in power accountable. But your assessment that a country close to the problem has tested more and is testing more is like saying water is wet. Thank you, Captain Obvious. Or as we used to say as kids, “No, duh!”

I also do not “magically know the US fatality rate.” I took the number of confirmed cases internationally and the number of deaths, and the number of confirmed cases in the US. We also have a death total stemming from the virus. I then solved for “x” to determine if our fatality rate was higher or lower than the international number. It turns out it is lower. You are absolutely correct that there are many unknowns. We likely have many more infected than we realize and have been tested. But there is nothing magical about what you learn in 6th grade math class.

  70. dude, the admin and its apologists were and continue to call coronavirus a ‘hoax’ and actively undermine mitigation efforts so please spare me your “there’s enough blame to spread around” attempt at faux-objectivity.

Your implication that testing capacity is dependent on geographical proximity to China is literally the silliest thing ive read all week

  71. dude, the admin and its apologists were and continue to call coronavirus a ‘hoax’ and actively undermine mitigation efforts so please spare me your “there’s enough blame to spread around” attempt at faux-objectivity.

I don’t need to “spare” you anything. You are the one assigning false narratives to my comments. I have objectivity and can see the deficiencies across the board. Your perception that only one side is bad borders on infantile stupidity and lacks a real, grown-up adult ability to hold people in power accountable for their failings. The “I don’t like Donny, so I blame him more because he is mean” is moronic!

I made it very clear and have been totally consistent that a lack of response and information allowed misinformation and confusion to dominate people’s lives. It was irresponsible to not take this issue more seriously. Hence, the reason why I came out months ago – supported Censure of the President and insisted we turn all our attention to the virus outbreak. Had we done that – we would be in a better position. That is a fact. And one you have not disputed.

For some reason you keep applying your theories and beliefs to me. I made no “implication” that “testing capacity is dependent on geographical proximity to China.” What I wrote was that people closer to the source have been testing longer and conducted more tests. That is an irrefutable fact. Do you disagree with that? Of course you don’t. So, what you decide to talk about is our “capacity” to do something. As a larger nation we have a greater capacity to produce more tests. Another fact. And we will – eventually. But when you are late the show, like our government has been, it takes time to ramp up. You don’t just flip a light switch and have a million test kits. Eventually, we will get there. Is what we have adequate? NO! I said that. Do we need to do better? YES! Will our current testing volume be equal to nations that have been testing longer, have more kits produced and a system of testing established? Of course not. You are arguing “Captain Obvious” and “water is wet” stuff and it is pointless.

And you are trying to demean me because I don’t share your narrow-minded view of the political landscape and (GASP!) I want to hold everyone accountable… and not just the people you don’t like…

  72. no one is taking notes on what you said in january,  you go ahead and hold everyone accountable on message boards, thanks for your service

  73. Thanks, @Blink… It’s interesting that you never once refuted anything I wrote. You just went around and around with nonsense. And your last comment to our thread was brief… but pointless… The whole reason we are here is to discuss issues and debate. Unfortunately, you seen unable to do either with meaning or substance. Have a wonderful weekend… We are done here.
