Another thing I appreciated about last night was Ohio Senator Tim Ryan saying that if Democrats don’t go back to being the party of working class people, all the plans being discussed would amount to nothing.   I don’t think he’ll be in the race much longer…   but, IMO, he did hit the nail on the head with that statement.

Mixed rulings from SCOTUS today – No (for now) to the citizenship question for the census and Yes to partisan gerrymandering.  That second ruling is what we call bullshit in the legal field.

    wapo breaking news:

Trump asks lawyers if census can be delayed, calls Supreme Court decision on citizenship question ‘totally ridiculous’

In a tweet, the president questioned whether the constitutionally mandated census could be delayed “no matter how long.”

The Supreme Court had put on hold the Trump administration’s plan to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census, saying it had provided a “contrived” reason for wanting the information.
This is a developing story. It will be updated.

Looking forward to seeing how Harris handles herself.  Biden just bores me silly, but he is acceptable as a candidate otherwise.  Yang is worth listening to even if he doesn’t stand a chance of nomination.  I still haven’t forgiven Gillibrand for leading the Al Franken kangaroo court, but would vote for her if I had to.

pogo,  all is not lost in some states. take heart with this from charlotte observer:

    RALEIGH

Updated with developments on June 27, 2019.

North Carolina’s nationally watched gerrymandering lawsuit won’t change the political landscape for the 2020 elections and beyond, after a U.S. Supreme Court decision Thursday.

    But another case might.

    [….]

The fight against partisan gerrymandering in North Carolina is not over yet. Common Cause v. Lewis, contesting the 2017 state House and Senate districts, goes to court on July 15.

This case, too, recently made national news, after computer files belonging to a deceased Republican strategist, Thomas B. Hofeller, were turned over to the challengers in the case.

While the Republicans lost six seats in the state Senate and 10 seats in the state House in the “blue wave” of 2018, ending their supermajorities in both chambers, they still maintained a majority in both.

Republican legislators unsuccessfully tried to move the case to federal court, saying in a news release that they did not want the case to be heard in North Carolina because they thought the judges there may be too liberal to give them a fair trial. The state Supreme Court currently leans heavily Democratic; the appointment of Mark Davis to the court gave Democrats a 6-1 majority. In contrast, the U.S. Supreme Court has a majority of conservative-leaning justices.

    Read more here: https://www.charlotteobserver.com/news/politics-government/article231422113.html#storylink=cpy

This case will go to trial in Wake County Superior Court, where the plaintiffs will ask for partisan gerrymandering to be ruled unconstitutional under the North Carolina Constitution.

    meanwhile, from the daily beast

Paul Manafort appeared Thursday afternoon in Manhattan criminal court, the first time he’s appeared in public since being sent to prison in March.

Manafort, 69, looked haggard as he pleaded not-guilty to mortgage fraud charges—dressed in navy blue scrubs with white sneakers and his gray hair long and mussed.

As he walked with a slight limp into the courtroom, flanked by U.S. Marshals, Manafort barely reacted as someone in the crowd yelled “traitor.”

“Not guilty,” he said into the court microphone, sitting down and handcuffed while the rest of his counsel stood. Todd Blanche, his lawyer, told the Judge Maxwell Wiley his client wished to waive his right for pre-trial proceedings.

    [….]

Manafort was recently transferred from federal prison in Pennsylvania to the Manhattan Correctional Center. Prosecutors wanted Manafort to transported to New York’s Rikers island, where most federal inmates facing state charges are held. Instead, the Justice Department told the Bureau of Prisons they were concerned about his “health and personal safety” and argued “the arrangement will not have any impact on his state proceedings.”

Manhattan Correctional Center, which houses about 800 inmates, has been home high-profile inmates like mob boss John Gotti and Bernie Madoff, who was convicted of orchestrating the biggest Ponzi scheme in history. The federal correctional center is also currently home to El Capo, notorious Mexican drug kingpin.

Manafort is expected back in Manhattan criminal court on Oct. 9.

Politics tends to make me angry so I take refuge in David Hume.  If it was true more than 300 years ago and we survived, we will probably make it through again.

Nothing appears more surprising to those who consider human affairs than the easiness with which the many are governed by the few.

Where men are the most sure and arrogant, there they are commonly the most mistaken.

This avidity alone, of acquiring goods and possessions for ourselves and our nearest friends, is insatiable, perpetual, universal, and dire.

I have no interest in seeing Gabbard, Yang, Bernie, Williamson, Bennett, De Blasio, or Gilliland win the nominations. I’d tolerate Biden pretty well, about the same as Hickenlooper, Ryan, O’Rourke, Delaney, and Buttigieg.
I’d prefer Klobuchar, Harris, Swalwell, Booker, Inslee, Warren, or Castro – in no particular order.
I think Harris and Swalwell would be a huge winner. The same goes for Warren or Klobuchar and Castro.
America will not elect a man that they know is a rapist and a russian tool. “Anyone who hates dogs and babies” may be a funny joke line*, but it could kill this raging gangster’s presidential campaign.

As a single mother during the “bussing” era in CA, I was opposed to bussing because I wanted to be able to get to my kids in an emergency.  The original Kansas City bussing case had to do with being bussed past a white neighborhood school to get to a black one. No child should be on a freeway for an hour instead of making their local school equal to one where they are being sent.

Bernie was  up there licking the tip of his little half pencil, making some notes on his little spiral notebook and holding up his hand, well, his finger, asking for either time to talk or permission to go to the bathroom. His time is past. Joe may be in the same boat.
