Couch Joy

[cross-posted via HuffPost]

Giving up your favorite couch is traumatic. Sort of like understanding our new world order. My confusion about Donald Trump is somehow related. One day I think he’s an idiot, and the next I wonder if he might be a genius. I was similarly conflicted about my old couch.

But a new couch finally made sense, especially since it was a gift from my cousin Carolyn. With a mess of duct tape and worn padding on the old boy after some 30 years it was clearly time for a change. As they carried it away to couch heaven I shed a tear.

Still, watching Trump TV (is there anything else on the news?) I certainly needed a new perspective. Well, here it is. New leather, new car-like smell, no fidgeting around the nearly exposed wood beams, or ignoring the bourbon stains and cigarette holes.

Perhaps now I can make sense of this. If not, my naps will be much more comfortable.

  1. and our civics rant lesson for today

    Published on May 1, 2017

This is how a dictator behaves.

  2. Jamie, thank you for helping us understand, participate in and get thru this week of ky derby.  especially for you it seems the bbc has this heartwarming story “The horse that saved his own life by painting”:
He was once a well-known racehorse, but it looked as though ill health would soon mean the end for Metro. Then his artist owner, Ron, had an unusual idea.
It’s said that you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink. So when Ron Krajewski first introduced his horse, Metro, to an easel there was no guarantee he would paint.

    [….]

Metro’s unbridled style has been compared to Jackson Pollock, a painter famous for his splatter and drip technique.

    [….]

Sales of the paintings helped fund a new experimental treatment for Metro. His vet created a technique to apply a drug called Tildren directly to his knees.

“Within a few months X-rays showed the bone growth had receded. It has added years to his life,” Ron says.

    [….]

Metro, who Ron says has an “A-list extroverted personality”, is in his element at the easel.

“I can put out the easel in the field and he will stop eating grass and stand right in front of it.

“He loves to paint. I’m not sure how much he can see as horses have a blind spot right in front of their noses. I think he likes the feel of running a brush over the canvas.”

  3. Poobah, I feel your pain.  We have a red cut corduroy (I think that’s what the fabric is) couch that LP basically grew up on.  Inexplicably, it still looks good, but there ain’t a lot of support in it, and we’ve moved it to the garage apartment that Mrs. P wants to clear out.  It’s long enough for me to stretch my 6′ frame out on and get a good nap, but it doesn’t sit all that well.  In my mind it’s LP’s couch – he even named it “The Legendary.”  It’s been replaced by a similar couch that is about the same size (good napping for me).  But Mrs. P wants to clean out the garage apt. of the stored furniture there.  I plan to give LP dibs on it, and if he wants it, I may have to find no way to remove it until he gets out of college and moves into someplace other than the garage apartment – that will buy me a couple more years and give me an excuse to put a tv out there.

  4. Craig…  I hear you loud and clear.  I’m tired of reading the same stuff said in oh so many ways over and over again.  I’m soothing my soul by doing some new work.  I’ve bought a few skeins of hand dyed tencel to weave with my hand dyed rayons.  It’s gonna be layer on layer of hand painted colors.

    Enjoy the couch!

  5. So what’s your take on this, Poobah and fiends?

Democrats think they have set the stage to block President Trump’s legislative priorities for years to come by winning major concessions in a spending bill to keep the government open.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) secured nearly $5 billion in new domestic spending by exploiting disagreements between Trump and GOP lawmakers over spending priorities.
Democrats’ lopsided victory on the five-month deal, which is likely to be approved this week, means it will be very difficult — if not impossible — for the GOP to exert its will in future budget negotiations, including when it comes to Trump’s 2018 budget blueprint.
That’s because Republicans are hopelessly divided over how much to spend on government programs, with a small but vocal minority unwilling to support such measures at all. That has forced Republicans to work with Democrats to avoid politically damaging government shutdowns.
And that means Democrats are in the driver’s seat when it comes to budget battles, even with Trump in the White House.
    ***
The extra money for domestic programs will now be that much harder to strip out of future budgets, and Trump’s priorities, such as money for a wall along the border with Mexico, could be more difficult to include.
“We can’t pass anything without them,” Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.), a top deputy to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), said of Democrats recently.
Hill Republicans remain skeptical of, if not openly hostile to, many of Trump’s plans — including the wall and proposals to slash millions from programs such as the National Institutes of Health and foreign aid.

    From WaPo.

  6. “The reason for the plan negotiated between the Republicans and Democrats is that we need 60 votes in the Senate which are not there! We either elect more Republican Senators in 2018 or change the rules now to 51%. Our country needs a good ‘shutdown’ in September to fix mess!”

so tweeted the twit in chief today

  7. “Our country needs a good ‘shutdown’ ”

envision millions of protest posters and bumper stickers at closed gov’t gates, nat’l parks, etc….food lines, mail without social security checks

  8. Craig

If you sink back into your nice new couch on Friday some time before 6:00 on NBC Sports, you can watch to see if Tequilita wins the Oaks at 20-1.  Or you can bet real money at http://www.twinspires.com.

In the meantime, if anyone else wants a filly in the Oaks, let me know.

  9. So let me see if I have this right…the Democrats need to disassociate themselves from corporations but Joe Biden would be a great candidate — Mr.MBNA  hmmm

  10.

I don’t have post positions or odds for Saturday’s Derby yet, but if anyone still wants a horse, let me know.

  11. The twit’s businesses, from his crappy marque, to his dumpy real estate, to russhun gas, to crappy his crappy wine and steaks, to cheesy foreign ties, cheesy foreign dresses, and cheesy foreign jewelry, to sabotaging America for his soviet masters, all need a good shutdown. Permanently.

  12. Jamie,

I’ll pick a trifecta in the Oaks : Paradise Woods to win, Miss Sky Warrior to place, and Salty to show.

For the Derby I’ll add J Boys Echo to show.

  13. one of those traffic-jam-on-the-server days

sounds like congress…. maybe a “good shutdown” is in order

too bad a few unions essential to the running of mal a ego and the other Donnie domains don’t go on strike and show him just how good shutdowns can be.

  14. senator  Graham: “Dems cleaned our clock on budget deal”

and Graham: “Kim makes Assad look like a choir boy”
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) says he does not think its a good idea for President Trump to meet North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un unless there is a clear purpose for the meeting

  15. I heard drumpf from the Rose Garden in what was supposed to be the Commander in Chief’s award to the USAF Academy for a great football season, but aside from a minute or so about the USAF football team, he crowed about how great he is and how well the admin  and repugs did in the budget deal.  I guess Lindsey Graham didn’t get the message.  Like many of us have recognized, if he’s talking, he’s lying.  Andrea Mitchell even cut away to call him out on his “inaccuracies” about the budget deal.

  16. There is a whole lot of talk finally bubbling up way behind those of us with truly horrifying suspicions that Trump is either mentally deficient, insane or crazy like a fox.  I’m going with symptoms of Alzheimers and an added fillip of insanity level of narcissism.

  17. politico:

“I take absolute personal responsibility,” Clinton told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour during a Women For Women International charity luncheon in New York. “I was the candidate. I was the person on the ballot. And I am very aware of, you know, the challenges, the problems, the, you know, shortfalls that we had.”

Still, she said she was proud of her staff and the volunteers who contributed to her campaign, which she acknowledged “wasn’t a perfect campaign.”

“There is no such thing,” she said. “But I was on the way to winning until a combination of Jim Comey’s letter on October 28th and Russian WikiLeaks raised doubts in the minds of people who were inclined to vote for me but got scared off. And the evidence for that intervening event is, I think, compelling, persuasive.”

imo Hillary acquitted herself well in the interview which got in to a lot of meaty stuff.  too bad candidates mostly orate, emote or shout to the voters via speeches to great crowds in large arenas instead of sit down interviews such as this one.   easy conversation with no shrillness, no shouting.

  18. has anyone heard from jack lately?  very bad flooding in the heartland…. hope he didn’t get washed away.

  19. Patd

That was always Hillary’s major problem with the media.  She doesn’t do soundbites.  She is a brilliant, hardworking, competent woman.  The only way to see that is in small groups and with thoughtful interviews.  Today’s political noise machine just doesn’t lend itself to that and is particularly in danger from outside forces that can throw quippy word salad mud.

Anyone who actually took the time to read & analyze her position statements and policy positions has been in mourning since 11/8.

  20. A long time acquaintance of mine (arch Republican) who spends majority of his time living & working in the Philippines had some things to say about that Trump Hotel with Ivanka shilling for the family fortune.

He:  That deal in the Philippines was done years ago. He gets paid to use his name only. He has limited approval of the property production design. It isn’t his project. It’s the Century company he is not even a partner. Foreigners cant own any property in Philippines

Me:  I know. He hasn’t actually built anything in years. His wealth comes from leasing his name and living off the allowance the bank creditors allow from his bankruptcies. So now he is using the Presidency to rake in much needed cash flow.  This is why the Russian connections are so dangerous because he can now only get loans from foreign banks for investments. He’s been cut off here in the states.

He:  Yes that why he is the only one we can trust to Break up the big banks

Me:  So only a deadbeat crook is crazy enough to destroy the US economic system? Sounds a little extreme.

  21. Clinton did those kind of interviews during the campaign but during the campaign that wasn’t good enough and the lame adopted the no press conference meme

  22. Practical Joke, Royal Mo,  Local Hero, win place show……whatever that means……

  23. If I were queen of everything I would have Rep Barbara Lee speak for the Democrats

  24. Red Sox Fans yell racial slurs at player —

    Is this a teachable moment

  25. KC, growing up in Birmingham, Boston was the northern city that let us know that racism wasn’t ONLY a southern character defect. I love both of those B cities in spite of their racist histories.

  26. I noticed many have spoken out about the incident and hope the question is raised – how could someone feel comfortable doing that and why didn’t the people around them notify stadium personnel and have them ejected?

Yeah Pogo San Francisco is a wonderful place with a history of racism aimed at the Chinese.  I am glad to see the south is taking down its monuments to racism – other places should do it as well.

  27. Am I the only one thinking that trump might not sign the CR on Thursday or Friday?  He is working up a rage about September when, in reality, he can accomplish his goal of a good shutdown right now. Any odds on him doing just that: shut down the government over two losses this week, the CR and a third attempt to repeal Obamacare?  Just saying!

  28. KC, SF Chinatown, best dim sum I ever had (no disrespect to NYC Chinatown intended).

  29. EProf,  I don’t think so after Mulvaney and drumpf bragged about what a great deal it is for repugs.  They don’t strike me as very good in the long game. Too busy patting themselves on the back for their perceived great deal.

  30. Yes, Pogo, but we all know now that he can change on his whims that day, that hour, that minute. After I posted, Lawrence O’Donnell played part of Rush’s push on Trump to shut down the government now. Who is Trump listening to on his latest failures?

  31. EProf, there is that. If there is one consistency with drumpf it is his inconsistency.

  32. Watching the Daily Show. Best thing that ever happened to Trevor Noah is the election of Donald trump. It may be the only thing that got Trevor past Jon. He’s definitely come into his own and has become the Daily Show host.

  33. That deadbeat pussygrabber can whine all he wants about the need to shut the government down, it’ll just mean no wall, and all the Hispanic Invaders in the Universe will be able to come to trumpdump tower via the National Parks on the border.

The deadbeat pussygrabbing crybaby is a LOSER.

  34. Watched the Clinton interview. What a difference from the beast of the apocalypse – a – lago.
