Sully, Bushâs service dog, will make one last journey with the former president
The yellow Labrador retriever appeared woebegone, his head slack over his front left paw, his muzzle resting on the ground. Yet he was also steadfast, still keeping watch over George H.W. Bush, the 41st president, who died on Friday at his home in Houston.
After accompanying the statesman and World War II veteran in the final months of his life, Sully, the late presidentâs service dog, lay before the casket holding what remained of him.
The display of instinctual, animalistic devotion captured the reaction to Bushâs death in a way that the words spilled all weekend over the Internet could not. Dogs, wrote the poet Emily Dickinson, âknow but do not tell.â
In his knowing pose, the dog was at rest. He will accompany his person a final time, as Bushâs body is flown from Houston to Washington, CNN reported. An arrival ceremony is expected Monday at the Capitol, where Bush will lie in state in the rotunda until Wednesday, when family and friends will gather for a funeral at Washington National Cathedral.

Woke up this morning to the news that one of professional cycling’s bright voices has been silenced. Paul Sherwin has died at the age of 62. Mr Sherwin, along with Phil Ligget, basically taught me the sport and enhanced my love of it over the years.
Trump agreed to hold off increasing tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods, for now.
Travisc – I saw that and also felt a loss. He died young too.
I hate to hear that Paul Sherwin will no longer provide commentary for the TDF. Â I always enjoyed his insight and comments with Phil Ligget and Bob Roll. although Phil retired, I always hoped he’d pop back in to discuss the Tour with Paul and Bob. Â Changing of the guard, I guess.
Le Tour will not be the same. That’s not a bad thing, but the loss of Mr Sherwin makes it a sad thing.

And yet, somehow, the hosts of The View still found a way to turn his tribute into an argument on Monday morning.
Things started off cordial enough with moderator Whoopi Goldberg noting how the remembrances from Presidents Clinton and Obama have helped remind us âhow you can still not agree with somebody but be respectful of somebody.â
âHe seemed to be coming from a loving, kind place also,â Joy Behar added of Bush Sr. âThat’s what Iâm gleaning from what they’re talking about, that he was loving.â
âHe was also known for his humility as president,â Meghan McCain added, noting that as our last combat veteran to be elected âhe was there to serve the people.â
The unspoken contrasts with Americaâs current president continued as Abby Huntsman highlighted Bushâs 73-year marriage to Barbara Bush, who died eight months earlier, and his dealings with the media. âI loved his relationship with the press because we talk about that a lot on this showâthey were tough on him, it’s not like they were easyâbut he had such a respect for what they did,â she said.
This led Behar to bring up another aspect of Bushâs legacy that has not gotten as much attention over the past few days.
âAs a candidate he said, âThose who think we’re powerless to do anything about the greenhouse effect are forgetting about the White House effect.â Then he signed into law the Clean Air Act amendment of 1990, one of the most sweeping environmental statutes ever.â
She then made the Trump comparison explicit. âThis president that we have now is trying to unravel everything that he did and Obama did, and if I ever become a one-issue voter, it will be about pollution and the greenhouse effect and the fact thatââ
And just like that, she was interrupted by McCain. âCan we focus on the president, please? I donât want to talk about Trump.â
âWell, I do for a second, so excuse me!â Behar said. âExcuse me a second, please!â When McCain she was not ânot interested in your one issue,â Behar replied, âI don’t care what youâre interested in because Iâm talking!â
âWell I donât care what youâre interested in either, Joy!â McCain shot back as Goldberg hastily threw to commercial.
When the clip appeared on the showâs Twitter account, the nasty exchange between Behar and McCain was magically missing. Itâs almost as if it never even happened…

The last of the WWII era politicians in the Rotunda is sad in a very important way for me, I grew up with WWI, Korea and WWII veterans and their families, my playmates and schoolmates. Not only is the period of dying a hard one to face because you know you and all your age are facing the finale, you might find yourself saying goodbye to others and you hang on; my mother has few friends left at her age of 91 which leaves her essentially alone (except she has us to support her).
Bush I was probably a very decent man, I view him as such. He did allow my community, and others who contracted HIV/AIDS through means like blood transfusions, to suffer. The passage of time will raise his presidential rating because we know more about the Middle East than we did a few years ago.
R.I.P. Lt. j.g. George Bush.
George H W Bush was among the last of the moderate, rational republicans. I donât think that he was ever fully embraced by the conservatives in the party as evidenced by the way they turned on him over the whole no new taxes thing. Â That he believed in science and the ability of government to run worthwhile programs sets him quite apart from the current Neanderthal Republican Party. I hope there are not too many comparisons over the next few days because it does a disservice to H W. He served his country with honor and integrity, two traits that contemporary republicans no nothing about.
