  1. editorial board’s Opinion | Democrats should help elect a Republican Speaker of the House – The Washington Post

Another day, another failed Republican speaker nominee. Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) ended his bid on Tuesday, just hours after his GOP colleagues tapped him for the House’s top job. As with previous candidates, Mr. Emmer got a majority of Republican House members to support him, but he could not sway ultraright lawmakers to vote for him on the floor, where he would need a majority of the entire chamber, including Democrats, to become speaker. Later Tuesday, Republicans nominated the less appealing Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.), a leader in the GOP effort to overturn the 2020 vote in Congress, another candidate who faces long odds uniting fractious House Republicans.

This is Republicans’ mess. But it hurts the whole country. Democrats have to help them clean it up.

The best — and, given the three weeks of paralysis, perhaps the only — ways to unfreeze the House involve Democrats doing more than watching Republicans fail. This would require at least some tacit understandings between the two parties, which neither side has seemed eager to develop. That has to change.

  2. Screw Washpoo editors.  So far they have decided fascism is the best.

Over the last couple years I have been playing with various non-power plugged into the grid solutions for my living areas. LED lighting is number one on the things to own. As a test I have two string light sets, one incandescent and one LED.  I have a solar power test setup, batteries, solar panels, magic boxes to turn solar into something usable coming out a regular outlet.  The old fashioned light bulbs drain my batteries from 100% down to around 65-70% after being on about 12 hours.  The LED string drains those down to 90-94% for the same period.  I am not running all sorts of meters and things so the numbers are a little variable.

The next is to get a portable power pack.  They come in many sizes, including home size on rollers.  The prices have tumbled so a good one that can keep the lights on for a couple days could be as low as $250.  The larger ones will let you keep the refrigerator running and run the Mrs.Coffee.  I now keep a small one in the truck for those just in case times when you need a little power to recharge the phone or have a light to read instead of running the engine.  At the house I have a larger one that can do more.

I am not talking about the off grid movement, just power for those times it is needed.  Off grid will be my boats.

  3. The old Republican Party is dead. It’s now run by tRUMPsky/Putin.   That. Is. Everything.

If there aren’t any anti-fascists left on the other side of the aisle, if they aren’t brave enough to vote with Dems (for Hakeem Jeffries), our republic is lost.   Congress will be weakened.  SCOTUS has been corrupted.  This is bad.

  4. BB/Craig – There are generators that come with tiny solar panels.  I’ve seen them being advertised on TV; the ads look like they are for end-times preppers.   Patriot power.

My electricity was out for about 7 hours yesterday. Despite being down from the covid-vaccine, I was still incredibly bored. The power surged overnight, too, as my white-noise fan clicked off/on and woke me up. Hmmm, a sentence with white-noise and woke, but having nothing to do with politics.

  5. BiD there are 2 systems out there – batteries and capacitors. The battery ones are larger and heavier and provide power over an extended period – sounds like what BB has. The ones you’re referring to sound like capacitors, which are easier to charge but work for briefer periods.

“Speaker-Nominee Johnson Comes From Known Hate Group Pushing Radical Legal Agenda at Supreme Court”

“Rep. Johnson, perhaps best known for leading an amicus brief in a long shot Texas lawsuit seeking to invalidate electoral college votes from key swing states in the 2020 election, previously served as senior spokesperson for Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) — a Southern Poverty Law Center-designated hate group that has worked to force a radical legal agenda through the courts.”

Johnson is a Christo-fascist. We really need some brave Republicans to vote for Hakeem. Save our democracy!

  7. Ah, now that I see you included the name, I’ve seen the ad for that.  There’s a review of it for your, umm, review.  Sounds like a decent little unit ($3,000, about 60 pounds, Lithium-Iron-Phosphate battery, solar panel included and can be charged either with that panel or with 120 V AC) , but in Texas when the power goes down it sounds like this won’t provide you with a lot of power for a long time, and if you try to power multiple electrical devices it won’t get you far.  It only has 2 AC power outlets.

Here’s a brief rundown from the linked review:

The Patriot Power Generator 2000X offers efficient power output suitable for most small to medium applications. Its ease of setup, simple-to-understand display and “whisper quiet” noise level makes it a great option for non-technical users.
With a constant power output of 2,000 watts (surge up to 4,000 to avoid overloading), the 2000X is a great option for powering all but the most power-hungry devices. Common appliances such as dishwashers, microwaves, small space heaters or refrigerators can be kept running in case of a power outage at home or while on the road.
Where this level of power can fall short is for bigger appliances such as hot water heaters, air conditioning units, and home heating systems, which can require much greater wattages for normal operation. This means that the 2000X should be thought of not as a replacement for a home grid backup generator, but as a portable means to keep personal devices and some appliances running in the short-term.
4Patriots lists some expected runtimes for common devices on the 2000X with a full charge to give you a more practical idea of the capacity of the battery generator:

    Full-sized fridge: 40 hours
    Microwave: 2 hours
    Dishwasher: 54 minutes
    Laptop: 35 hours
    Chest freezer: 32 hours

Boils down to how long you’ll need it and what you want to power.

  8. $3,000, about 60 pounds, Lithium-Iron-Phosphate battery

…one-way ticket out of that godforsaken state for a fraction of the cost

  9. House speaker live updates: Mike Johnson elected – The Washington Post

Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) was elected speaker Wednesday by the full House on a first vote. Johnson, a relatively unknown, staunchly conservative Republican, succeeds Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), whose ouster this month was led by hard-right members of the party. The House GOP previously picked three higher-profile nominees, none of whom could win over Republican holdouts and secure a majority vote. Johnson is an ally of former president Donald Trump and opposed certifying the 2020 election. He is antiabortion, voted against Ukraine aid and supports LGBTQ restrictions.
    […]
With 220 votes, Rep. Mike Johnson, a relatively unknown Republican from Louisiana, has been elected the 56th speaker of the U.S. House.
It took Republicans over three weeks, hours of closed-door negotiations and three other nominees to get to this point.

  10. Image result for rep mike johnson speaker

the guy looks like he could be stephen colbert’s little brother.  colbert could do gigs on SNL as the new speaker.

  11. pogo, irish sweepstakes probably taking bets right now on if and when he’ll be ousted.

i give him until the CR is agreed to to keep the gov’t open at which point (like his predecessor) he’ll get the hook.

  12. Matthew 6:5-6

5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Can’t see the Pharis for the Sees.

  13. Let’s hope this was TRIAL RUN (pun intended), and he gets on his crap plane and goes to Saudi Arabia or Russia next time, and takes the rest of his mob family with him.

Putin will probably be sending SOTH Johnson a welcome gift basket.

  14. https://www.cnn.com/2023/10/25/politics/colorado-trump-14th-amendment/index.html

“A Colorado judge has rejected another attempt by former President Donald Trump to throw out a lawsuit seeking to block him from the 2024 presidential ballot based on the 14th Amendment’s “insurrectionist ban.”

“The ruling Wednesday from Colorado District Judge Sarah Wallace clears the way for an unprecedented trial to begin next week, to determine if Trump is disqualified from returning to the White House because of his role in the January 6, 2021, insurrection.”

  15. So Dumbass was told…You’re not credible, pay $10K, STFU, try me if you think this is a joke.
    Stupid fucker.

  16. He looked like he had more turkey neck today, so he’s trying to get closer to 215# for when he’s actually processed for prison.  Eh, I still think he’s a flight risk.
