    When President Trump touches down in El Paso on Wednesday, Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-Tex.) won’t be there to greet him.

     

    Escobar, whose district includes the El Paso Walmart and shopping center where at least 22 people were killed in one of two mass shootings this weekend, announced Tuesday that she had turned down an invitation from the White House to join Trump during his trip to the border city still reeling from what officials have deemed an act of domestic terrorism.

     

    “I declined the invitation to accompany the President because I refuse to be an accessory to his visit,” the Democratic lawmaker wrote in posts shared to Facebook and Twitter. “I refuse to join without a true dialogue about the pain his racist and hateful words and actions have caused our community and this country.”

    On Tuesday, Escobar, who has repeatedly linked Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric to the El Paso shooting, wrote that she had asked to speak with the president over the phone before his visit to “share what I have now heard from many constituents, including some who are victims of Saturday’s attack.” But the request was not met, the congresswoman said.

     

    “I have publicly said he has a responsibility to acknowledge the power of his words, apologize for them, and take them back because they are still hanging over us,” Escobar wrote. “I asked for a call so I could say this to him over the phone and ask for a dialogue that could lead to healing.”

     

    She continued: “I was told that he is ‘too busy’ to have that conversation.”

    Rep. Veronica Escobar, a Texas Democrat, spoke to MSNBC after visiting a hospital treating victims of the El Paso shooting, many of who were Hispanic. She told All In host Chris Hayes that they gave her a message for Trump ahead of his trip to the city.

     

    “This community is full of hope and resilience and beauty. But the other thing that I heard, totally unsolicited, from victims still in the hospital as they’d grab my arm and tell me, ‘Tell him not to come here,'” Escobar said.

    The White House did not respond immediately to Newsweek‘s request for comment. President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are scheduled to arrive in El Paso at around 1.45 p.m. local time and stay for around 2.5 hours.

    The congresswoman, who has also told President Trump not to visit El Paso, said she also spoke to a Vietnam veteran called Ralph who said: “I am being made to feel like I’m not American.”

    “And so as I said via Twitter, and I’ve said before, words are powerful and words have consequences,” Escobar added.

    “The words that he’s used to dehumanize us, to dehumanize communities like mine, to dehumanize immigrants, they have a consequence, and they provide fuel for people who already are bigoted.

     

  3. Another day, another day of SFB making it all about himself.  He is not normal, he is a low intelligence (100 = average, could he be as low as 80?), narcissist, bigot, white supremacist and, as many say, syphilitic. He needs to be removed and take the idiot (maybe gay) bobble head with him.

    A few minutes later, Bobby Byrd, a retired local publisher, made a suggestion that sparked laughter and clapping. “I think everybody should speak Spanish when he comes here,” he said.

    Another call was made to find a consensus around exactly what kind of demonstration to pursue on Wednesday.

    Garcia noted that a smaller group would work on logistics. He summed up the past hour of discussion. “This is what we have so far,” Garcia said. “First, we want to come together as a proud community in El Paso. Secondly, we want to put out the stories of our families—and, potentially, even the stories of the people that were impacted, if we get their permission. Third, we want to do a powerful, symbolic, but peaceful event,” not civil disobedience at this time. “And finally,” he said, “that we would like to see people from across the border—from Chihuahua and elsewhere—there.” A lawyer mentioned that her clients from across the border would only be able to come if they weren’t worried about being arrested.

    Garcia solicited affirmation from the group on three points. Gun reform: “Yes!” The rejection of xenophobia and racism: “Yes!” And thirdly, he said, “What Trump represents is not welcome in El Paso.” An even louder, “Yes!” Garcia went on, “He won’t be welcome until he repents, asks for forgiveness, learns Spanish. And he ends the strategies violating the rights of our communities.” Garcia continued, “He’s not gonna do it. But because of that, he’s not welcome in El Paso. People can express this silently or yell it. Is that all correct?” Once more, the crowd thundered, “Yes!”

Just watched a few minutes of Faux & Friends for the first time.  In walks Don Jr., Donorrhea Jr. He’s like a Kelly Ann’s mouth, a ducks ass.  He spent most of the time jabbering about a headline in a newspaper! Oh, yeah, the NYT. The rest of the time was about poor him. He mentioned that Castro posted a list of Donnorrhea’s donors in  San Antonio. Hooray Julian!

  11. Watching all those cranked-out westerns, I see that the boomers and their parents to a great degree, came up to adulthood under the cloud of the-good-guy-with-a-gun syndrome. Town’s being run by ruthless and corrupt saloon-owner or rich rancher and his evil minions: the GGWAG comes loping into town and uses his Winchester and Colt 44 to set things at peace again by shooting all the bad eggs while all the helpless towns folk cower behind their curtains. (Those folks who don’t cower usually get shot.)
    Then…..he either settles down there with his new fair maiden friend to be the town Law Enforcer/start his own ranch; or, if she happens to have died during the main shootout, he rides off in a westerly direction drawn on by his eternal wanderlust.   
    Then there are the gangsters, the war flicks, yada yada…….

One morning in the Army-Navy Club in Myrtle Beach (band played midnight to 6 AM) this rounder from Horry County (pronounced O-Ree) comes in, gets drunker’n hell, picks a fight and then starts beating up on people. Big dude. Beat up the bartender, both the bouncers, couple of innocent by-standers, slapped around a waitress, until finally Billy Joe Johnson gets there. Billy Joe was Sock-eye’s second in command. They kinda square off and Billy Joe pulls a little .25 auto out of the pocket of his windbreaker and plugs the guy in the fleshy part of his thigh. So he’s down hollering and Billy Joe tells him, “Now you go on back to O-Ree County and tell them there’s people down here in Myrtle Beach who’re a hell of a lot crazier than y’all are.”
    The band’s orders in times like these are to turn on the house lights and play Johnny B Goode loud and fast till it’s over. 
    There was some tough monkeys up in Horry County, and they would all traipse on down to Myrtle’s gambling palaces to get their itches scratched.  Story is that one time long ago Charleston emptied its prisons by settling them all up there.

  15. Mr Sturgeone, Your tale sort of reminds me of the cleansing of Hot Springs, Arkansas. Over there it was crazy farm boys returning from the war, who chased out the crazy mafia, who’d spent the war at the Springs.

    Former Vice President Joe Biden leads the crowded Democratic field by six points in an Economist/YouGov poll released on Wednesday.

    The poll found Biden as the first choice for 22 percent of those surveyed, followed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) with 16 percent and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) with 13 percent.

     

    Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg rounded out the top five, both with 8 percent, according to the poll.

    The survey, conducted Aug. 3-6 among 1500 U.S. adult citizens, found Biden continuing to maintain stronger numbers among African American voters than the general primary electorate, with 33 percent identifying him as their first choice, followed by 13 percent for Warren and 10 percent for Sanders.

    The poll has an overall margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points and 2.9 percentage points among registered voters.

    Both Warren and Sanders have lost ground from a July 27-30 poll, which also showed Biden in first place at 26 percent and Warren at 18 percent.

    The YouGov poll marks the second survey this week to show Warren in second place, following a Tuesday Quinnipiac poll that showed Biden in the lead with 32 percent support, a two-point drop from the previous survey, and Warren with 21 percent, a five-point gain from last month.

    I think you have to look at a longer period than 2 polls for Economist/YouGov – they put them out frequently.  That latest Economist /YouGov poll is consistent with its prior poll results for Biden (26% in the 7/27-30 poll, 25% in its 7/21-23 poll, and he was in the 22 & 23% range in the first couple weeks of July), Sanders (who has been at 12-13% throughout July) and  Warren, who’s ‘s been in the 16-20% range in E/Y polls throughout  July.  It does bear noting that in that poll Harris has shown a loss of around 7 points since the beginning of July.  RCP.

McCall – LOL.  He’s partially responsible for my screen alias.(Actually, his big song Convoy came out several years after I went off to college, but all that redneckky trucker CB shit was already popular).  Back when I was headed off to college, there being no cell phones and me driving cars that cost less than $1000 and that had certain propensities to unexpectedly stop running (like when the rocker arm fell off the right side head of my 64 bug while I was on I20/59 (in Fairfield headed home for the weekend one Friday evening) my dad insisted that I put a CB radio in my car in case I needed to hail the police or someone in an emergency.  Came in handy that night, BTW.  So I had to have a handle.  And it was, wait for it, Pogo.  I never really talked on the radio but it was a bit of fun listening to the truckers.  Heard some funny conversations, loaded with innuendo and double entendres when the guys were trying to line up a little … relaxation … at the 76 truck stop in Cottondale, AL.

    George Conway, a vocal Trump critic and the husband of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, tweeted a political cartoon Wednesday with one panel showing President Trump encouraging a gunman in the wake of mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, over the weekend.
    One side of the cartoon shows Trump telling a gunman phrases from his campaign and public comments about undocumented immigrants, such as “Build the wall,” “It’s an invasion” and “They’re criminals.” The other side shows the president yelling “You’re mentally ill!” at the gunman with the two surrounded by dead bodies.

    Attorney George Conway, the husband of White House adviser Kellyanne Conway, created an awkward scene on social media Wednesday when he mocked a concern that his wife had been highlighting on her Twitter feed.

    The controversy surfaced after Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, published the names of donors to President Trump in an apparent attempt to intimidate them. The senior Trump aide derided the move in a series of tweets and retweets.

    In one, she promoted a tweet by House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., saying that “lives are at stake” when people target others based on “their political views.”

    Scalise was previously injured and hospitalized after a politically-motivated shooting at a practice for the congressional baseball game in 2017.

    She also retweeted a post about former Democratic National Committee chairwoman and Fox News contributor Donna Brazile saying Castro’s actions were “wrong.”

    Her husband mocked those concerns Wednesday while retweeting an article from The Washington Post that reported on a real estate developer holding a fundraiser for the president.

    “How terrible they are publishing names of donors omg omg,” he tweeted sarcastically. He also knocked concerns about privacy, arguing that donor names were public information.

    “Searching for and retrieving the public information that he tweeted doesn’t take much more than 20 seconds, either,” he said.

    The exchange was just the latest awkward incident for the Conway family as George has continually blasted the president on Twitter. In July, Kellyanne said she “totally disagree[d]” with her husband’s sentiments referring to Trump as racist. He had written an op-ed in which he denounced Trump’s comments about progressive congresswomen.

By the way, SCOTUS be damned, i’m convinced the 2nd amendment doesn’t afford anyone the right to even OWN a gun.  You can “bear” one, meaning you can carry it.  Carrying something does not necessarily imply ownership, and the highly-educated English people that helped write the Constitution understood the existence and meaning of the words “own”, “possess”, “property”, etc..

    while we’re at it nit-picking wise, the strange idea of race seems to me a bit non-sensical.  the bigots would be more correct in targeting differences of ethnicity, tribe, linguistic group, etc  than something that doesn’t scientifically exist.  but then they care less about what science says.
